Smart Boot Manager problem.
by David Hodge
Working with a PC/CD-ROM drive that works but cannot be used as a boot
device. Trying SBM
Downloaded the SMB sbootmgr.dsk (floppy image)
Used rawwritewin to copy the image to floppy disk
Loaded floppy disk into my Fedora Core 1 server
Loaded the Fedora Core 2 boot CD into the drive
from a console prompt issued a reboot (shutdown -r now)
When system reboots grub screen comes up (for 5 seconds)
The OS listed on the screen is "Fedora core (2.4.22-1.2115.nptl)
The screen gives me 5 seconds to select one of three options before it
says it will begin booting from the selected OS which on the screen is
Fedora core (2.4.22-1.2115.nptl)
In 5 seconds my Fedora Core 1 installation boot up. It doesn't matter
if I have the FC2 boot cd or the FC2 disk 1 cd in the drive.
(these are image cd's that have tested out ok)
any ideas?

RE: FC2 authentication with Active Directory
by Jim Parker
I thought I was following all the very different procedures, but no luck
on log in. I could query LDAP if I supply a user name/password when
prompted. Also, I can authenticate with Kerberos and join a domain, but
it doesn't retain a Kerberos ticket.
The reason I'm asking about all this is so that I can use a single log
on for all the different systems (UNIX, Solaris, Windows, and of course
FC2 workstations) we have.
Again, all the help you can provide is very much appreciated.
Jim

I'd love to see a "How-to" as well. All of the documentation that
I've read states that there are problems with Samba 3.x and Windows
2003 (works fine with Win2K). The most recent article I've read was
about v3.0, so I don't know if the Samba developers have fixed those
outstanding issues with Win2K3 in more recent versions or not.

FTP Server Configuration
by mlists
I'm looking for a little advice on ftp configurations for a public ftp
server I need to setup, basically I want to set it up so that each user
has there own login and can look into there home directory and some
shared areas but not into each others home areas or even see that they
exist.
Is this possible ?
Thanks in advance

RE: controling FC2 with VNC
by Rafiq_Maniar@Dell.com
You need to modify the xorg.conf file:
In Section "Module" add:
Load "vnc"
And in Section "Screen" add:
Option "passwordFile" "/root/.vnc/passwd"
See http://www.realvnc.com/v4/x0.html for more information.

Subject: controling FC2 with VNC
I want to control my Linux PC from my XP machine - mainly because I have
no space for another VGA terminal. I installed VNC. At the moment, I can
start a new X session on the FC2 and thats great - but this is not the
main X session that is active in the FC2, so whenever I shut down the XP
(the conreoling computer) - all the processes that I created in the FC2
(the controlled computer) are being killed.
My target is to work from the XP on the FC2 directly - and not to open a
new X session.
How can I do that?
Thanks

FC2 not shutting down or rebooting
by James McKenzie
All:
My FC2 installation on a Thinkpad A22p is not shutting down nor is it
rebooting. It is getting to INIT: No more processes left for this
runlevel. I can leave it overnight. I did change the grub.conf file to
remove rhgb and quiet to see what is hanging the shutdown process.

Two 3Com ethernet NIC : don't work
by Alex
In my home pc (a P-III 933 MHz) is installed since 1
year an ethernet card 3C905C Tornado and it works fine
with Windows XP and Fedora Core 2.
Now I need (for some simple network experiment) to
install a second nic, a 3C905B Cyclone.
With Windows XP no problem: this OS configure these
two nic without any error.
But with FC2 (kernel 2.6.5) I can't use the second nic
(eth1).
The 3c59x driver (compiled as module or compiled
static in kernel) detects right two nic:
----snip----
3c59x: Donald Becker and others.
www.scyld.com/network/vortex.html
0000:02:0b.0: 3Com PCI 3c905B Cyclone 10/100/BNC at
0x2800. Vers LK1.1.19
0000:02:0d.0: 3Com PCI 3c905C Tornado at 0x2c00. Vers
LK1.1.19
------------
I can use only eth0 device and always is the 3C905C
Tornado.
Any access to eth1 (simple "ifconfig" or else as
"ifup" and "ifdown" after set
/etc/sysconfig/network-script/ifcfg-eth1) says:
----------
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth1: unknown interface: No such device
eth1: unknown interface: No such device
----------
The same message with driver compiled as module or
static.
If I remove from PC the 3C905C , the new 3C905B is
detected and is configured correctly as eth0 and it
works fine.
I've added in "/etc/modprobe.conf" the line "alias
eth1
3c59x" without success.
I've also physical swapped in PCI bus the cards
without success.
I've removed these nic and I've installed (thanks to
my friend) two Intel nic: they works correctly without
any problem. Kernel detect and use eth0 and eth1
without any problem.
So, what's wrong with my two 3C905B/C ?
Someone can help me ?
Thanks in advance.

Fedora Core 2 as CD-ROM bootable Firewall - is it possible?
by Daniel Paul
Hello,
our company has currently 2 linux servers, equipped with Fedora Core 2.
Additionally we have a very old firewall, which will be replaced by a new
one. Now I would like to have it running under Fedora Core 2 too, but also
would like to boot it from CD-ROM for security reasons. Needed
applications would be Squid webcache and (of course) iptables netfilter.
Is it possible to run Fedora in such a configuration?
If yes, what are the needed software to create the cd-rom image and which
steps do I have to take (for example on one of our existing servers)
Any help would be appreciated,
Bye
