Unmounting Filesystem problems after removing USB drive
by Dan Kovacik
Dear Sirs-
I have two Maxtor USB drives that I use for backups. I swap the drives
in rotation. Today I did not umount the drive before pulling the power
and yanking the USB cable.
The new USB drive can still be mounted and written to ... but ... df
is showing the drive to have 0 bits available (100% used), and the
best part ... taking down the machine hangs with the last line
reading:
"Unmounting Filesystem [OK]"
which I'm beginning to think is not OK.
This problems has persisted through at least 2 power cycles, and the
other drive has been locked in a safe until next year. How can I get
df to realize that I have a new USB drive?
Thanks,
Stan

Fedora Core 3: /media/cdrecorder keeps dissappearing
by Steven P. Ulrick
Hello, Everyone
I am running Fedora Core 3, full installation (not an upgrade), all updates
installed. I have been having this annoying problem with my USB2 external
CD-RW drive. The first time it dissappeared, I ended up rebooting and when
the system was done rebooting, I had my CD-RW drive back. This morning, I
checked to see if it was still there (this has happened a couple of times,
with no discernable cause.) It was gone! The last time I used the drive was
last night. I went to bed, slept for a few hours, woke up and checked for
the drive and it was gone. I do not have YUM set up to run automatically, so
there is no possible issue with updates causing this. In fact, this has
happened multiple times over a period of a few weeks, and up until now I
thought that possibly something was causing it to dissappear on it's own.
Now, at the very lease, it sure looks like it (my CD-RW drive) is
dissappearing with no human cause.
Since it just silently dissappears, I have no idea where to start diagnosing
this. Your help is greatly appreciated. Since eliminating Windows from our
home system, I have developed a love for not rebooting, so rebooting to get
my CD-RW drive back is undesired :)
Thanks in advance for your help,

ip masquerade
by naxis
hello every body,
I'm naxis a newbie.
Trying to make ip masquerade run on my fedora core 2 two saw how to on
this mailing list I tried everything writen but still I cannot make it
run.this is what I've done until now.
I want to make pc in my local network get access to the internet
eth0 get dynamic ip address from the isp
eth1 FC2 local dhcp server (IP:192.168.1.1 GW:192.168.1.1)
I run
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -s 192.168.1.0/24 -j MASQUERADE
I edited /etc/sysctl.conf setting
net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1
and run "sysctl -p"(advices I saw on this mailing list)
"iptables -L -n -t nat" shows this for the POSTROUTING:
Chain POSTROUTING (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination
MASQUERADE all -- 192.168.1.0/24 0.0.0.0/0
But local network cannot have the internet.
Is there anything I'm missing to do?
Is there any way to that without iptables?
I need your help

HTML Editor / Bluefish
by Maciej
Hello out there,
I was searching for a HTML editor and found 'Bluefish'. I cannot found a
RPM package for my FC3 (my arch is 64 bit but 32 bit package is ok too).
Can anyone help or recommend another HTML editor (maybe one that one can
install with yum)?
P.S. I am asking myself all the time: why there is nothing like yum for
hardware drivers?

Mine is a "Compaq Presario 1277" laptop, How can i determine if this
requires a ACPI or APM to have the fan running ?
Thanks.

To keep things exciting, it depends on the laptop. Generally, though, the
problem here is that some laptops require ACPI to make the fan go, so if
you
turn on APM, no ACPI, and therefore no fan.
Mine (a Sony Vaio U101) requires ACPI to make the fan work _properly_, but
luckily it's "fail on" -- without ACPI, it runs at full blast all of the
time, which is at least less dangerous that the alternative.

OpenSSH and Chroot Support
by Ow Mun Heng
I saw a project (patches) on the net that has chroot capability for
SSH. I have a gentoo system which has this capability (I've not tested
it, but it's a few lines of patch)
I'm wondering if this is available for Fedora? I would like my Fc2
server to have this capability. That way, public_html is all that the
logged in user can get to.
And I wonder if it would have the same affect to sftp:///, which would
be a very good alternative to ftp.

xprint and firefox
by John Francis Lee
Hello,
I have FC3 installed and have downloaded and installed
xprint-2004-07-07-release_009_001-0.9.001.i386.rpm
My object is to get firefox to print Thai webpages correctly.
When I try to print to my ricoh 1600 using ricoh@:33 firefox takes more
than a minute to format the page, the printer blinks and processes the
results, but no paper comes out of the printer and it returns to state
"ready". Thai or English.
If I print to file and examine the results with ggv I can see the page
more or less correctly rendered. For some reason the navigation buttons
from the top of the page are one this fist page by themselves and the
rest of the page is on succeeding pages. If I try to print the page from
ggv I get the same result as with firefox itself.
If I use the default PostScript/ricoh printer, Thai characters are
rendered as little boxes.
I have no trouble printing from evolution, openoffice, gedit, or other
programs, in THai or in English.
Does anyone understand what's wrong?
How else might I print Thai webpages if xprint cannot be made to work on
redhat?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Email-Auto-Responder+Web Gateway
by Ow Mun Heng
Hi All,
As most of you know (or should, as I've rant'ed about it often enough)
I don't have any I-net access at work, and sometimes, when ppl point me
to links, I can't access it. I've been living with a Email-to-Web
Gateway since someone told me about it (FYI: it's a service where you
send an email with the URL to the address and it will re-send you the
page)
Since I just have Fc3 set-up at home as a email-home-server, I was
wondering if anyone knows of any scripts which can be used for this
purpose.
FYI: Postfix + cyrus IMAP (partially working, still bugs to be ironed
out)
Thanks
