Nautilus and .dat file type
by Norman Gaywood
This is probably an upstream problem/feature, but anyway here goes.
Nautilus thinks that files that have an extension of .dat are mpeg
videos. That has got to be wrong.
Surely, nautilus should do more that use a file extension to determine
file type?
Is there a way I can change this behaviour for all users of the system?
I came across this problem during a class on the R statistical package.
They were all using gnome login sessions and no one could edit their
data files from nautilus because it thought they were MPEG videos!

yummir, manage mirror servers in /etc/yum.conf
by Sean Reifschneider
I've been working on a program to manage the lists of repositories, and
the associated mirror servers in /etc/yum.conf. I call it yummir. It
polls a server for information on repositories and their mirrors, and
then uses that information to place into /etc/yum.conf.
For example, to update yum.conf with the latest set of mirrors:
yummir update
Or, to add the macromedia flash repository do:
yummir add macromedia
Currently, I'm only publishing repository information for Fedora. I'm
managing the list manually, and will shortly be working on tools that
automatically find out if a mirror is up to date and publishes new lists
based on that. Only a Fedora ix86 repository list is available, but it
should be easy to publish more information.
Please check it out and let me know what you think.
It's available at:
http://www.tummy.com/Software/yummir/
ftp://ftp.tummy.com/pub/tummy/yummir/
Thanks,
Sean

HD Noise
by Carter J. Castor
I have a Dell Inspirion Laptop. The hard drive is very quite all day;
however, when I leave it idle at night, it starts spinning like crazy.
I would turn it off; however, I use KAlarm as my alarm clock so it sits
by my bed on my desk all night. I was wondering what would cause it to
suddenly make so much noise and how I could fix it.

please recommend a video capture card
by Mick M.
Hello list;
I am running Fedora Core 1 on an older Athlon K7 650/256MB Nvidia
gforce2 mx 400 box. (very nice btw)
My daughter is in the USAf stationed in Japan, she haa an athlon XP
3200/512 MB with ATI video and Viewsonic 15" lcd monitor.
She runs XP pro.
She has a very limited personal storage space and does not have
physical room for a TV set.
What I want to do is buy her a decent video capture card and a VCR.
Then she can watch TV/Video tapes on her computer.
As well as run her video camera into it (VHS) - no firewire or usb on
the camera.
She already has a DVD drive and CDRW on her system.
I do not run XP and want to test the hardware and maybe duplicate it on
my system before I ship it to her.
What video capture card would you recommend?
thanks
Mick M.

clearing out /tmp safely
by Matt Hansen
Hi guys
I would like to clean out my /tmp partition as per the tip at
http://fedoranews.org/krishnan/tips/tip014.shtml. However, just one small
query. Is there any folders/files in the /tmp directory that shouldn't be
deleted? My /tmp currently contains directories such as gconfd-root,
kde-root, ksocket-root, lost+found, mcop-root, a number of ssh-*, and
files such as crxmlqWMLkc, a number of libGL.la-*, sockets such as
mapping-root,..etc.
Will all these entries safely be recreated when needed? Just a
precautionary measure; I realise it is after all a "temporary" directory!

Compaq Armada m700 - XFree86 Problems.
by GianPiero Puccioni
Hi,
I am trying ti install FC1 on a Compaq and I am having troubles with the
setup of XFree86. What happens is that when it switches to graphics the
three keyboards light flash several times (not always the same, from 4 to
15 times) than X starts, dmesg reports the same amount of "keyboard timed
out[1]". It doesn't matter if X starts from inittab, startx or switching
from a text console through Alt-F7, it does the same. The XFconfig is
the standard one generated by the installation and the keyboard section
is the default, I tried changing something here and there but nothing
different happens. Plugging in an external keyboard doesn't change
anything. In the log file there is nothing about the keyboard beside the
usual (the usual being the log of another machine where it works).
The same machine did run a previous version of XFree without problems.
After this delay everything seem to work but it can be really annoying
(it can be up to 40-50 secs) as the owner of this machine frequently
uses text consoles.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
GianPiero

libxml2mod.so : undefined symbol
by Murali Potla
I have problem with redhat-config-packages and yum on my FC1. it looks
like it is a problem with the python and libxml2.
I have upgraded my box from Red Hat linux 9 to Fedora Core 1.
I am getting the following error whenever i launch yum or
redhat-config-pcakages
import libxml2mod
ImportError: /usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/libxml2mod.so: undefined
symbol: xmlTextReaderIsValid
I am unable to use these tools. command line rpm works fine though.
Are there any issues reported while upgrading from RHL to fedora ?

viruses from mailinglist
by Joolz
Since a week or so I keep getting lots of email from the list with 29K
zip attachments. AFAIK these are viruses (Mydoom?).
They don't hurt my system, procmail handles them. But wouldn't it be
better to filter these out before they get sent to the mailinglist?
Thanks!

fd0 problems with fedora
by John Meagher
Hello all,
I have just started with Fedora and my first installation attempt
crashed when I tried to create a boot disk. So the second time I said
no to that option and did a mkbootdisk /dev/fd0 after the system came
up. Crash again. Rebooted, tried fdformat, crash again. mdir works
fine but mcopy crashes the system.
If I try to mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy, it tells me fd0 is not a valid
block device. ditto if I do it with the gui tool. When the system
boots, "Floppy drive(s): fd0 is 1.44M" gets written in the log.
There's a bug in bugzilla # 102565 which is the first thing you see when
you google on fedora fdformat, but it's dated last Aug 18 and there's
been no action on it since assignment. There also haven't been any
other complaints on this list as far as I can see, so it must be rare.
How can I go about troubleshooting this? The captured strace follows.
Thanks,
John
