Soundcard recognized but no sound
by Marc Mouriès
Hi,
With FC I can see in the control panel that my sound card
is well recognized. My soundblaster live is seen as "emu10k1"
but there is not sound.
I tried to raise the volume in the alsa mixer but it did not help.
Any hints ?

3 Upgrade Quibbles
by Andy Choens
I've googled and surfed hunted through the archives here and at Fedora
Forums. I even tried reading through some stuff over at the LDP pages,
all to no avail.
After upgrading, I've got 3 problems. None are show stoppers, they are
simply annoying.
First a little about my system. It's a Toshiba Laptop, running FC2,
with a few extra packages for media and what not. It was upgraded from
FC1. I use XFCE as my primary desktop.
1) For about 2 weeks, OOo would open up and acknowledge XFCE's color
settings and adjust itself accordingly. Now it doesn't. I don't know
why. It works just fine in gnome.
2) When I turn my computer on, my volume is set to mute on most of the
channels. I've tried resetting it with amixer and alsamixer both as a
normal user and root. But, when I reset and check the settings on
alsamixer, they are muted again. On a desktop this wouldn't be a big
deal since it would rarely be reset, but on a laptop this is a bit of a
pain.
3) For any other XFCE users on this list, has anyone noticed an odd
tendency for the provided XFCE themes to look identical to one another,
except for some differences of color? They shouldn't. When I ran XFCE
on FC1, each one was different. I have several other themes installed,
and they all change the widgets according to their theme. Only the XFCE
themes provided by Fedora seem wrong. So, I know it's not in the
compilation of the XFCE-gtk-engine. Are the themes from Fedora hacked
in any way?

FC2 & Nvidia
by Jim Radford
Sorry, I know this has been gone over before, but I can't find the thread
where it was discussed.
I have an Nvidia card and am wishing to do a complete wipe and reinstall (from
FC1 to FC2). What issues are there with the Nvidia drivers and how do I
overcome them?
Rather than repeating eveything, if somebody could point me to a relevant
Subject line I can Google for the answer. (Though giving me the answer here
makes it alot easier for me ;)
Thanks in advance,

How are data DVDs written under FC1 ?
by Kostas Sfakiotakis
Greetings Everybody ,
I wanted to ask how can someone write a data dvd under Fedora Core 1 .
Am familiar with cdrecord and mkisofs as far as writting cds is concerned .
I know that there is a command called dvdrecord which seems to work like
cdrecord . But am rather uncertain on how to create a 4,5 GB ISO image
in order to
feed it to dvdrecord to do the writing . Does anyone have any
hints/examples ?
Thank you in advance for your time
Kind Regards,
Kostas

FC1 for ppc??
by Beartooth
I found a hint somewhere (and bookmarked it) to the effect that there's a
version of Fedora for Apple machines. I'd like a little background before
I pursue it.
My wife has an Apple G3 iBook, which currently has Yellow Dog 3.0 and OSX,
and which I play troubleshooter for. We both detest the Apple interface,
and have only ever used it for a dialup connection at her mother's. (The
ISP there supports Apple but not linux, and I last time I tried, I
couldn't manage to hack a linux connection even when I had the OSX one up
and running.)
I tried, most of a year ago, to upgrade the iBook with yum to 3.0.1, and
got caught behind a learning curve steeper than I had time, moving into a
then new house, to traverse. I've thought of getting 3.0.1, or whatever
may be out by now, on CDs, and just doing a fresh install. But maybe I
don't need to.
Surely someone here has experience, or knows where to look: if I install
Fedora instead (FC1 -- I'm far too sub-technoid to tackle FC2 till FC3
comes out) is it a straightforward install? Do I have to get special CDs?
(I have the ones from both Petreley's and Ball&Duff's books, plus the DVD
from B&D -- dunno if the apple (bought summer 2003 from terrasoft) can
read DVDs, though.)
Does it matter whether I try to preserve either current OS? I'd actually
prefer to wipe OSX, and take my chances with the ISP in the Great Smokies
again.

ypxfr: cant' get master address
In ypserver, hosts files there is master address and ypwhich show me

Any idea?
Thanks in advance

Gpilotd and synaptics touchpad kernel questions
by Mauri Sahlberg
Hello list,
I had working and still have, if I boot to Knoppix or to XP, Synaptics
touchpad but I have not managed to get it work under kernel 2.6.5
Neither Mandrake 10 or FC 2 recognized it's existence during
installation nor does recompilation of kernel with CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2=y
help. The pad remains undetected and non functional. Of course synpatics
driver does not load as it is unable to detect the pad
(CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV is a default for FC-kernel). Do you think that
downloading 2.6.6 kernel source and compiling it would help to get it
work? It takes foreever to compile kernel and the space is very tight.
Another thing that stopped completely working is gpilotd. I can sync
with j-pilot or do backups/restores/install with pilot-xfer but gpilotd
just does not talk to the pilot. Any ideas what I could do to get it
work?
The laptop is Medion MD7409 or (FD2020+++) a model that probably was not
sold anywhere else than in Finland.

Wireless tools FC2
by Jason Parks
When using FC 1 any user was able to use the command iwconfig. I don't
remember having to su root or anything. After installing FC2 for the second
time, everything appears to be working and I can put my wireless card into
monitor mode etc as root. When I log in as a user and try the same commands
I am told iwconfig command not found. When I su root I receive the same
message. Anyone have any ideas?
