resolving rpm conflicts
by SternData
When I try to install the latest clamav and clamav-milter rpms from the
crash-hat repository, rpm reports that they conflict with logwatch. If I try
to update logwatch from Dag's, it reports a conflict with the two clams. Is
there any easy way to force these things to work or tweak things so they work
and play well together?
What I have been doing is
rpm -e logwatch
up2date clamav clamav-milter
then downloading the latest logwatch from Dag or logwatch and installing with
rpm -i --force logwatch
This seems "unclean" to me. There's got to be a better way.

system bell volume goes up when I turn up the speakers
by Clint Harshaw
When I turn up the volume on my external speakers, the system bell
volume goes up -- which can be really startling!! On my FC1 box, the
system bell comes out the internal case-integrated speaker.
Is there a slider that I can adjust that will "unlink" the pcspkr volume
from the volume on my external speakers? Or is there some other sound
adjustment I can do to remedy this? Is it happening to anyone else?
Thanks,
Clint

ftp and passive mode
by Doug Maurer
I've asked this question before, but nothing has helped
I'm trying to ftp out, I can log into a remote system (another FC2
system, mine, configured with vsftpd and NAT running.)
on the local side I get
227 Entering Passive Mode (x,x,x,x,80,76)
ftp: connect: No route to host
I can log into another system like ftp.linux.ncsu.edu just fine.
only thing is, its only this box, on the remote box I can ftp out to
another fc2/fc1, etc.. with no problem.
the local box was just reloaded from scratch. with basic iptables
running.. with no local nat. and still get the error.
does anyone have any idea, what might be causing this?

verifying ipv6 is turned off
by Ben Vitale
Hi,
How do I verify that IPv6 is in fact turned off? I have the lines
alias net-pf-10 off
alias ipv6 off
in my /etc/modprobe.conf, but my DNS queries are still hanging quite
often, even after a restart.

Sendmail Starting
by Jake McHenry
Hi everyone,
In my /etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail file, this is what there was originally
start() {
# Start daemons.
echo -n $"Starting $prog: "
/usr/bin/newaliases > /dev/null 2>&1
if test -x /usr/bin/make -a -f /etc/mail/Makefile ; then
make all -C /etc/mail -s
else
for i in virtusertable access domaintable mailertable ; do
if [ -f /etc/mail/$i ] ; then
makemap hash /etc/mail/$i < /etc/mail/$i
fi
done
fi
daemon /usr/sbin/sendmail $([ "x$DAEMON" = xyes ] && echo -bd) $([ -n "$QUEUE" ] && echo -q$QUEUE)
RETVAL=$?
echo
[ $RETVAL -eq 0 ] && touch /var/lock/subsys/sendmail
if ! test -f /var/run/sm-client.pid ; then
echo -n $"Starting sm-client: "
touch /var/run/sm-client.pid
chown smmsp:smmsp /var/run/sm-client.pid
daemon --check sm-client /usr/sbin/sendmail -L sm-msp-queue -Ac -q $SMQUEUE
RETVAL=$?
echo
[ $RETVAL -eq 0 ] && touch /var/lock/subsys/sm-client
fi
return $RETVAL
}
I added the following line because the sm-client.pid file was being created and it's always empty, so when I shut sendmail down or restart it, it would fail, and I would have to kill manually. I added this right after the daemon sm-client line.
ps waux | grep '^smmsp' | cut -d ' ' -f 5 > /var/run/sm-client.pid
This worked, but could someone show me what your files contain. The way I did it probably isn't the best way to fix this.
Thanks,
Jake McHenry

Hack attempts
by Edwin Dicker
The last two days i got bugged by someone from korea and someone from japan.
his is what i find in my LogWatch :
--------------------- SSHD Begin ------------------------
Failed logins from these:
guest/password from ::ffff:211.119.136.170: 1 Time(s)
test/password from ::ffff:211.119.136.170: 1 Time(s)
Illegal users from these:
guest/none from ::ffff:211.119.136.170: 1 Time(s)
guest/password from ::ffff:211.119.136.170: 1 Time(s)
test/none from ::ffff:211.119.136.170: 1 Time(s)
test/password from ::ffff:211.119.136.170: 1 Time(s)
is this a known hack attempt by some sort of program ? because for both
tries the same usernames have been tried to use : guest and test
cheers
