Why should I keep mozilla?
by Gustavo Seabra
I'm using Firefox for browsing, and Thunderbird for mail. However, I
still seem to have mozilla installed. I wonder, is there any reason I
should keep mozilla around? (Does any program depends specifically on
the existence of mozilla installed?)
Thanks,

Linksys WMP11 with Fedora Core 2
by Dave Andreasen
Hello all!
I have a Linksys WMP11 wireless PCI card that I am
trying to get to work with Fedora Core 2. What steps
do I need to take to get this card to work? I have
searched this list and found some hints, but no
definitive answers as to if this card can work or not.
I have found that Fedora "sees" the card because it
appears in /etc/sysconfig/hwconfig.
Please keep in mind that I am a total Linux newbie. I
have used other Unix flavors in the past (Solaris
mostly).
Thank you for any help you can give and Happy New
Year!

low audio volume
by Claude Jones
I have a fresh install of FC3 on a 1.5 Ghz desktop. All is generally
well, but, my audio volume is extremely low. Even with amplified
speakers turned up all the way, and the volume control on my media
player turned up all the way, the sound is fairly soft. It can be heard,
but it can't be made loud. Is there a setting somewhere that I'm
missing? The sound card is built in to the MB which is an MSI, I
believe. All works well in Windows, so I don't think it's a hardware
problem.

RPMs and custom kernels (Newbie)
by Nicholas Comino
Hi all,
This is a real newbie question about FC3.
I spent the last few days learning (mostly by trial and error) how to recompile my kernel (Fedora 3 to kernel 2.6.10) and finally installed the drivers (Ali 1689 chipset) needed to get the ethernet connection working - so I finally have internet. (It was a very happy moment!). But this morning, Red Hat Network Alert... is telling me that I haven'te installed in RPM format and slaps me on the wrist.
"You are running kernel-2.6.10 but it is not installed in RPM format. It is highly recommended... By running a custom kernel, you will miss out on any security fixes and functionality enhancements provided by Red Hat Linux, and your config is unsupported".
The question I have is what to do now? The original kernel did not support either of two possible networking options. I doubt they will be supported officially. Can I get the "security fixes and functionality enhancements" while keeping my existing drivers?
Thanks,
~Nick.

Was advised to check /etc/modprobe.conf. The line (alias eth0 natsemi) is there. When configuring network in KDE or GNOME the card is detected as
DP83815 but unable to activate it. Says card could not be found.
Thanks again

Firestarter Notes
by Charles Curley
These are some notes that may help folks using firestarter
(http://www.fs-security.com) on Fedora Core 3.
The FC3 installation is an upgrade from FC2, with all updates to FC3
since applied. firestarter is firestarter-1.0.1-1, installed from the
RPM on the firestarter web site.
Setup: I have a firewall which I usually run decapitated. It is, of
course, dual homed (i.e. two NICs). Eth0 is the external interface,
eth1 the internal. Both have their IP addresses assigned by DHCP, so
firestarter runs when an IP address is assigned. Because I run it
decapitated, I must be able to use SSH to log in.
Problem 1: Boot sequencing. I had problems booting in that even with
the firewall set up correctly, I had no NATting. Conjecture: The first
IF is initialized, including DHCP. This includes the firewall
script. However, since eth1 is not yet initialized, the firewall is
broken. Result: no NATting. Then eth1 is initialized.
Apparently, DHCP does not run for eth1, or at least the file
/etc/dhclient-exit-hooks is not used.
If I manually run /etc/firestarter/firestarter.sh, everything works
correctly.
Workaround one: rejigger PCI cards, and their attendant boot
configurations files in /etc/sysconfig so that eth1 is the external
interface. I have not tried this. I'm lazy.
Workaround two: add a line, "/etc/firestarter/firestarter.sh start",
to /etc/rc.d/rc.local. That's easy, and it works for all cases.
Problem 2: Out of the box, the firewall did not allow me to SSH into
the firewall machine. I had to shut the firewall off at the
(temporary) console, log in over SSH, and restart the firewall. Not an
acceptable solution.
Solution: add a policy to allow connections from the appropriate
internal host(s). That works. This is a change from previous behavior,
and as far as I can tell is not documented!
