FC3: kernel panic with latest kernel and updates
by Globe Trotter
Hi,
I updated the kernel to the latest official FC3 release using yum. After that,
yum also informed me that several versions of netpbm needed to be updated which
I did. However, on rebooting the machine results in kernel panic.
The exact words are as follows:
......
Uncompressing Linux....OK, done.
Audit (1117587386.484:0) initialized.
Redhat nash version 4.1.18 starting.
Enforcing mode requested but no policy loaded.
Halting now.
Kernel-panic -not starting:
Attempted to hide unit.
What exactly does all this mean, and how do I fix this?
Many thanks and best wishes!
(Using Windoze after a long time to send e-mail to the store in Ams.

Re: keyboard stops working
by Issac Newton
Use a live linux to replace the files concerning the keyboard (Forgot
where they are). You can also try updating the system concerning the
keyboard via up2date or whatever you would rather use. Use the onscreen
keyboard for the password promt.

Re: Reinstalling windows on a dual boot system

I discovered that to late, I use the floppy boot disk to boot linux
from now on. Try finding a GRUB install disk you can burn that will
update grub after you re-install Windows.

sshd:cipher_encrypt: bad plaintext length 337 [Failed}: ( second time post)
by Ankush Grover
hey friends,
I have again have to post my problem on the list as so far i haven't
been able to solve the problem.I even mailed to the OpenSSh list but
so far not response from their side.
The SSH service on my FC3 server is having some problem.
Let me explain why this happened:
I was trying to authenticate with the public keys to my CVS server
through Wincvs on Windows XP Sp2.I have installed cygwin and openssh
for cygwin on windows.I configured my CVS server for SSH
authentication with password but later on when I tried to make it run
with key based access the problem with SSH started.
Now everytime I try to start the SSH service
service sshd start it gives the error:
sshd:cipher_encrypt: bad plaintext length 337 [Failed}:
Alexandar responded to my mail earlier and asked me run few commands
and post the result of the commands over here
1) $ egrep -v '^$|^#' /etc/ssh/sshd_config
the output of this egrep is below
ListenAddress 0.0.0.0
SyslogFacility AUTHPRIV
LogLevel INFO
PasswordAuthentication yes
ChallengeResponseAuthentication no
GSSAPIAuthentication yes
GSSAPICleanupCredentials yes
UsePAM yes
X11Forwarding yes
Subsystem sftp /usr/libexec/openssh/sftp-server
2) I ran dos2unix command on sshd_config ,but nothing changed.
3) The output of strace -x /etc/init.d/sshd start
I have only posted the output which was in "Red Color".
write(1, "FAILED", 6FAILED) = 6
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, NULL, [], 8) = 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, [], NULL, 8) = 0
write(1, "\33[0;39m", 7) = 7
4) the output of bash -x /etc/init.d/sshd start
I have only posted the output which was in "Red Color".
+ echo -n FAILED
FAILED+ '[' color = color ']'
+ echo -en '\033[0;39m'
I search on google for this error there was something on it that
sometimes there are some $ in the sshd_config .I removed all the extra
$ signs but still the problem is persisting.
Can anybody tell me the solution for this.Failing to get any solution
will force me to start the telnet service as sometimes i need to
login into my server from home .Starting telnet service is like
opening a door for thiefs.
Thanks & Regards

Building redundancy
by Ashley M. Kirchner
First, the question: How to build redundancy on a "users" server?
What's behind it: When our main users server goes down, no one can
log in to check their e-mail. So the problem as it was presented this
morning was to research some way to make it so that if that server goes
down, users still have a way of getting to their e-mail or login to
their accounts for that matter. Now, the setup we have is a bit
different from most people I'm sure. Incoming e-mail flows as follows:
Internet -> MX server -> spool server (NIS+ slave)
Our "users" server - also our NIS+ master - (which is a totally
different machine) does an NFS mount of the spool server on /var/mail/
and voila, e-mail. When our users use imap/pop to check/get/send
e-mail, they log in to that "users" server to do so. No one
communicates directly with the spool server. So when the "users" server
goes down, no one can get to their e-mail. The question: what kind of
redundancy can I build so that if that server were to go down, that
users can still log in (to -something-) and still access everything they
need. Presumably this would be a separate machine and that the fall
back would be transparent to them. I just don't know how or what.

Are you able to get other Anaconda loads to recognize, and work with
the partitions? Also, check to make sure the drive is working correctly
without errors and is hooked up to the motherboard correctly (forgot
specifics) so that the computer will not reroute to the wrong port.
Anything else, I don't have the necessary expeirence.

Start system-logviewer maximized
by Esteban Xandri
Under Gnome, system-logviewer starts with a small unmaximized window
which is quite annoying. I maximized it and tried to save this size
using gnome-session-save, but then, a Warning appears with the message :
"These windows do not support save current setup and will have to be
restarted manually next time you log in"
Title System Logs
Class System-logviewer
I read the man page of system-logviewer and explains width and height
parameters, but they only adjust window's size.
Any suggestion on how to make logviewer starts maximized?
Thanks in advance

Re: [Fedora] Re: Building redundancy
by Issac Newton
The server needs a bypass switch if the main server goes down. You will
have to have the bypass directly connected with the mail server, and
switch when the main goes off, then they have to log into their mail to
retrieve it on the server. You could also try having a miniature
version of the main server's setup on the mail server, and any other
servers, that allow them to connect to them independently.
