FC3 -> FC4 Fresh install, keeping /home
by David Niemi
Finally going to bite the bullet and update my main machine, one
question though.
How will I have to handle existing user directories and information on
the /home partition if I do a fresh install of FC4? What will happen
when during the first run I have to create a user and this user's
directories etc already exists? I am going to back up all the
information to DVD anyway as well as leaving copies on other partitions.
Also, will my raid0 drive (data drive) cause / be a problem?

Serious Problem
by Colleen Beamer
Hi All,
I'm having to send this from Windows hell, but I can't do anything in
my Linux environment.
I can log in, but every time I issue a command, I get told that it's
not found. For instance, when I ran startx, it couldn't find the
command. When I ran ls, it couldn't find the command. I even tried
entering a path to the command, like /usr/bin/ls and /bin/ls, but to
no avail.
Yesterday, I did a couple of things on the computer and don't know if
that had anything to do with my problem.
First, I wanted to install my krecipes program which I retrieved via
svn. When I tried to do that, I got told that for the present kde
used unsermake instead of the gnu make utility. So, I installed
unsermake and then did the "export PATH" thing to be able to use
unsermake from where it was insalled. No perceivable problems after
doing this.
Then, I did a yum update which installed a number of new KDE packages
from the updates-released repository.
Today, I added a program which I installed via tarball and edited my
.bash profile to make the permanent addition to my path. Then, I
rebooted and now, no commands will work.
Any ideas what is going on here and what I have to do to fix it?

Colleen

Losing context menu and default screen background
by Paul Michael Reilly
I have seen this strange behavior on both FC3 and FC4 whereby on
restarting a session the default screen background does not get
painted and the context menu is no longer available. It is as if the
session has not fully initialized. I am looking for some explanation
or some clues on how to chase down the problem.
Thanks,

There are more than one way to skin a cat. Hence, there are most certainly
more than one way to promote FLOSS. (Free and Libre Open Source Software).
This is the what, why and how.
Plamo Linux
This is a Japanised version of Linux that was created to fill a niche by

Gnome Power Manager
We all know that power management in Linux isn't all that it's cracked up to be.
This is changing nearly on a day to day basis as more and more developers are

FC3 snapshot/updated ISOs?
by Gaspar Bakos
Hi,
I am trying to figure out the optimal way of installing FC3 (NOT FC4),
which is now ~7months old, and there have been plenty of upgrades.
Is there any more efficient way than:
1. installing FC3 with the _original_ ISO images
2. doing a massive update?
I am trying to eliminate step #2..
I wonder, for example, are there ISO images which contain all the
upgrades and bug fixes for the past 7 months?
Any pointer to such ISOs would be helpful.
Or, alternatively... how hard it is to create them for myself from the
CD sources?
One possible answer to the problem would be; why not install FC4?
I am hesitant, as i have a couple of other computers with FC3
/up-to-date/, and would like to maintain full consistency between them.
Also, i guess FC4 does not only contain all the updates & bug fixes
from FC3, but also implements many new things, some potentially
instable.
Cheers

Sound : Line-in seems broken in all kernels but 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4
by Ron Hawkins
Hi all,
I have a Gateway P4/1.8GHz with a Audigy / Firewire card. I have sound
for all but mic
and Line-in and I have recompiled every kernel since 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4
in an attempt
to get Line-in to work with no releif. (No TV sound) Has anyone else
run into this? With the first Kernel
I had to turn off the digital jack and then put analog mixer at full
volume and master volume
on full then TVtime controlled line-in and all worked. Now TVtime
comes on with Line-in
at Full volume but no sound no matter what I set.
TIA,
Ron

Re: Serious Problem
by Colleen Beamer
Hi Guys,
First, thanks for the assistance. I had "hosed" my .bash_profile file
as Jeremy Gladdis so eloquently put it! :-) I forgot the $.

This helped. Of course, I had to put a couple of other 'bin''s in
there, like /usr/sbin and /bin to get vi to work so that I could edit
the .bash_profile file. However, I'm back up and running again.
Thanks again! :-)

Need help with ndiswrapper
by Patrick McCarthy
Hi,
I'm new to Linux and need a little help installing ndiswrapper. I've
installed FC4 on my desktop and downloaded updates with Up2date. I have
been unable to get my linksys WMP54Gv.4 wireless card recognized by the
network wizard. I have downloaded ndiswrapper in order to install the
windows xp driver for the card, but am having trouble following all the
install instructions on the ndiswrapper
website-http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/mediawiki/index.php/Installation
I used the
ln -s /usr/src/linux-<kernel-version> /lib/modules/VERSION/build command
to build a link to the source, inserting '2.6.11-1.1396_FC4' as the
version.
The next step went o.k.-'make distclean' in the ndiswrapper-1.2
directory, but the 'make' command produced a 'no link' error. Sure
enough, upon clicking the /lib/modules/2.6.11-1.1369_FC4/build and
source files it said there was no link.
How do I find out if I have the source. If not, how do I get it?
What is 'the source'. Why wouldn't it have been installed with FC4?
Thanks,
Patrick
