Updated FC4 install disk(s)?
by David Niemi
A few months ago there were some messages about an updated version of
the install CDs or the DVD, is this still available from someone's site
or on bittorent?
The June FC4 CDs/DVD do not have adequate support for my motherboard
(Biostar TForce 6100-939) with the nForce-4 chipset so the on-board
network card (RTL8201BL/RTL8201CL) and other things aren't found. FC5-T1
just keeps rebooting after the install too fast to see what the problem
is and I've tried many of the kernel options.
SUSE 10 works great though but I'd rather run Fedora. I'll probably try
FC5-T2 next week if I can't get FC4 installed.
Agreed, I could download all of the base, updates, and extras with SUSE
then do a local yum update with the hobbled FC4 and see if that works.
Thanks for the information / suggestions.

Fedora Core 4 On mini mac
by Hill, Richard D
(sorry if this is the wrong place to post this)
For days I have been trying to install Fedora core 4 (ppc) on my Mini Mac I have repartitioned destroyed partitions etc and every time it errors with ignore or cancel messages about partition blocks I can press ignore and go on but it generally bombs out when it comes to the actual formatting of the new partitions I've defined and the copy of files part , on one occasion it seemed to actually install but on reboot it failed to load kernel image
There is nothing wrong with the hdd I have no issues at all installing tiger back on the Mini Mac , but do what I will it actively refuses to have anything to do with Fedora.
Has anyone else experienced this problem ?
Richard

Never mind....
EDIT -> PREFERENCES -> BEHAVIOR -> Always open in browser window was
unchecked. I checked it and the sidebar is back.

Having to log in is the default; before upgrading you must have
configured autologin yourself.
See the AutomaticLoginEnable and AutomaticLogin keywords (documented at
http://yippi.hypermall.com/gdm/gdm-documentation/x241.html) in
/etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf to set it up again.

dual head on fedora

I was trying to set up a computer with dual head and install an ATI 9250
AGP card and an ATI 9250 PCI card. When I go to display and select Dual
Head I can setup the card resolution and Color Depth and the monitor,
but even after reboot the second screen still doesn't show anything. It
just stays blank. Is there anything else I should look at.

I was asked why the GNOME panel clock calendar displays weeks that begin with
Monday.
The other questions are. Ccan it be changed to begin with Sunday? And, of
course if possible, how to change it?

Private Mirror/Repository
by Jonathan Allen
Hi there !
A client has a number of machines on their internal LAN, all running FC4.
To keep them all up2date takes quite a lot time and bandwidth because
even at 512M broadband speeds the stuff has to be downloaded for all
the machines on the network. Could I set them up with their firewall
machine holding a mirror of the Fedora Core and Extras repositories and
have all the network machines point to the firewall for repositories ?
Any pointers to doing this and gotchas to beware of would be welcome ...

VDQ : Firefox, Fedora -- and yum?
by Beartooth
I run FC4 on four (sometimes five), and have just had to re-install it on
one I had managed to foul up (another story); so I *think* this is right :
FC4 not only installs Ffx by default, but makes it the default browser;
but to update Ffx you have to go through nine yards of tarballs, and
things to fierce to mention to MS users, most of whom haven't heard of
tarballs and would either fall asleep or climb the walls in panic if you
tried to tell them.
Yet apparently Firefox appeals to MS users.
"yum update firefox" certainly doesn't work, at least not with the default
configurations on a new install. Nor on any install of mine.
Need these things be?
Is there a way I've missed to make "yum update firefox" work? Is there
hope it will in FC5 -- or even FC6?
Or is the trouble something in Firefox itself?
As for me, I use Ffx as little as I conveniently can, just because I can
keep Opera -- which has as many bills & whistles, some of them better --
up to snuff so much more readily. It tells me when a new release is
available, asks if I want it, and if I tell it yes the worst that can
happen is that I have to run an rpm command. And Opera is also
cross-platform ....

Good TV/VHS card for Fedora Core?
by dondi_2006
Hello,
I have a microatx PC with on board graphics more than adequate
for my needs. The only thing I want to add now is a TV capture card to encode and copy on DVD my home videos from a VHS VCR.
I *might*, some time in the future, use the same box for
recording analog and satellite TV shows, but that is quite
unlikely, so it's not required. Right now, all I need is a
card that gives no trouble with Fedora, has coax or SCART
input and HW (PAL) video encoding to copy my movies faster.
I have already made a bit of research. The three models below seems the easiest to buy around here, and OK with Linux,
but I'd really appreciate your opinion (quality, ease of use,
best Fedora driver support, anything) or suggestions for other
models of course:
Hauppage Win-TV PVR 250
Sapphire Theatrix 550 pro
Sapphire Theatrix 300
Thanks in advance for any feedback,
Webber

OT(?) FC2 Very slow printing to HP DeskJet 870Cse
by Mike McCarty
Off topic due to age of FC2?
Anyway, have installed an HP DeskJet 870Cse, and it prints
unbearably slowly, like 30 minutes per page.
I have used Google, but no joy. Many hits, but none
seems to look just like this one.
Printer is direct connect, no other computers on a LAN etc.
Printer is connected to parallel port.
I am using an IEEE compliant bi-directional cable purchased
just two days ago (just in case the old cable might contribute
to the problem, no change).
No other printer installed.
As an example of print speed (if that is the correct word)
$ ls -l test.txt
-rw-rw-r-- 1 jmccarty jmccarty 16 Jan 17 00:44 test.txt
$ cat test.txt
This is a test.
$ lpr test.txt
Here are the elapsed times to significant events...
0:00 hit return on command
0:06 printer data light flashing, loaded sheet of paper
0:38 printer actually printed something, not all...
at approximately 10 second intervals, printer moved
the print head, data light flashing continually
1:58 sheet ejected, with one line on it printed
So, two minutes to print "This is a test." I have to believe
that, since the data transfer light was flashing the whole
time, something is translating this into a giant
postscript program, or into a pure bit map, or something,
and transferring a huge amount of data. There must
be something wrong in my setup for this printer.
Here is what (Red Hat Symbol)->System Settings->Printing
gives for the printer.
Queue Type
Queue Type: locally connected
Queue Options
At start: no banner
At end: no banner
Top margin: 36 right margin: 36
left margin:36 bottom: 36
cpi 12
lpi 7
page-bottom 86
page-left 57
page-right 57
scaling 100
wrap true
Printer Driver
DeskJet 870C hpijs
Driver Options
send FF no
send EOT no
assume unknown is text no
prerender postscript no
convert text to ps yes
effective filter locale C
res,qual,ink,media 300 dpi,Color,Black+Color Cart
page size letter
model HP DeskJet 870C
printout mode normal
I have another queue for that printer which does two-up printing,
but I haven't checked it for speed. I just know that this queue
is unbearably slow, and I must have set up something wrong.
I tried changing the option "convert text to postscript" to
no, but that made no change.
I would like some direction on how to proceed with this.
Thank you for your time in reading this message.
Mike

how to remove packages from yum upgrade
by Ken Schutte
After doing a fresh "everything" install of FC4, I tried a 'yum
upgrade', and got these errors,
---> Package kernel.i686 0:2.6.14-1.1653_FC4 set to be installed
--> Running transaction check
Error: Unable to satisfy dependencies
Error: Package dlm-kernel needs /lib/modules/2.6.14-1.1653_FC4, this is
not available.
Error: Package cman-kernel needs /lib/modules/2.6.14-1.1653_FC4, this is
not available.
Error: Package GFS-kernel needs /lib/modules/2.6.14-1.1653_FC4, this is
not available.
Error: Package gnbd-kernel needs /lib/modules/2.6.14-1.1653_FC4, this is
not available.
This exact problem has been addressed here,
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2006-January/msg01530.html
and another long thread here,
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2005-October/msg03542.html
and, as it suggested, I just removed those packages - which I don't
think I need,
# yum remove dlm-kernel cman-kernel GFS-kernel gnbd-kernel
However, the upgrade didn't seem to finish because I still have a
2.6.11-1.1369_FC4 kernel, and I thought it was upgrading me to
0:2.6.14-1.1653_FC4, but stopped when these errors showed up. If I try
'yum upgrade' again after removing those, it eventually gets to these
same errors. (I also tried 'yum clean all' after the 'yum remove').
Do I need more than 'yum remove' to have it completely ignore these
packages next time I try to upgrade?
thanks,
Ken
