Proposed changes for fedora
by Antonio Olivares
Dear all,
When visiting Distrowatch.com, I found the following
information about Fedora
http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20061127
Far-reaching changes affecting the Fedora distribution
are looming on the horizon. Discussed by the project's
core developers during the recently concluded Fedora
Summit, a number of new ideas are currently being
submitted for approval by Red Hat. If they are
accepted, the "Core" and "Extras" parts of Fedora will
merge into what is tentatively called Fedora
"Complete", with two separate products, named "Fedora
Desktop" and "Fedora Server", emerging from the huge
software list. Extending the current support period of
about 9 months to around 13 months is another
important proposal that will please many Fedora users.
Those who enjoy remastering the distribution for their
own purposes will be excited to learn about "pungi"
and "pilgrim", two tools that will allow building
custom distributions and live CDs/DVDs. Pilgrim is
also expected to help with delivering an official
Fedora live CD/DVD. There is a lot more - please visit
the Proposed Changes to the Release Process and Live
CD Roadmap pages on FedoraProject.org for more details
about these and other changes affecting the popular
distribution.
Is there any way for the community to have some input
on these issues?
Is there also another way to find out that these
changes are being proposed? Many community members
are uninformed and object to some changes when they
are made, but since they had no voice they could not
do anything about it.
Some of these changes like "Fedora Total" seem very
logical. We'll still have to wait and see what
happens.
Regards,
Antonio

I've recently installed FC5. If I browse to a directory of .jpg images with
konqueror I don't see the thumbnail images. Any ideas how to fix this?

What's a good lock box ??
by Bill Case
Hi;
Need suggestions for a good lockbox -- a specialized application or an
appropriate technique for locking away sensitive personal information.
I am not normally a paranoid security freak. I keep my single user (most
of the time) desktop and Internet system fairly open and loose.
However, I would like to create one secure file or folder in which I can
record as text things like a long list of user names and passwords for
web sites -- to range from minor not often used sites, to Bank Accounts,
paypal, some personal data with serial numbers etc.
Is there a special program that exists for creating and locking up such
a file without interfering with my generally open way of doing things?
Any recommendations graciously received.

Font paths
by Anne Wilson
Following the instructions in
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Font-FAQ I am trying to add fonts to
be globally available. I have created a folder and put my new fonts there.
It then says I should create a text file
called /usr/share/X11/fonts/local.conf, with the new folder added in the
format
<dir> /usr/share/X11/fonts/NewFonts </dir>
However, when I run 'fc-cache /usr/share/X11/fonts/NewFonts' I get the error
Fontconfig error: "local.conf", line 2: junk after document element
I have checked that there is no space or newline character after the line.
What is wrong, please?

geda update problem
by Gene Heskett
Greetings;
Tryng to update geda on my FC5 lappy tonight, and it fails repeatedly with:
Missing dependency: libgeda.so.26 is needed by package geda-gsymcheck
And I've not found that although I do have libgeda also checked to be
updated. Ditto for the -devel and docs packages.
So it looks as if its a genuine dependency problem. Whats next?

using sudo
by David Berg
I'm in the process of switching from ubuntu to Fedora and am so far
impressed. The first thing I want to change is how administration is
handled. I like ubuntu's decision to remove the root password and only
allow root access through sudo.
So I gave myself full sudo access, disabled root logins, and eliminated
the root password. Works great on the command line.
The problem is this: How can I get the gui's to switch from wanting to
use an su interface (and asking for a non-existant root password) to
using sudo?
Is there setting or link I can change to have everything switch over?

Can't get GRUB installed.
by Ted Gervais
I am having trouble booting up core6. I installed it earlier today and
after trying to find a way to get Grub to work I formatted the drive and
started over.
Now I am back at the same prompt with no core6 running. Grub does not
appear and the result is - Windows comes up rather than linux.
I am totally lost now. There is no sign at all that there is even Linux
installed on this computer, and yet I just took off centos which was
working fine and it used grub as its windows manager.
I have two harddrives (hda and hdb).
HDA is for Windows and HDB for Linux.
That is how it was with centos and previous versions of linux such as
core5. It always worked fine.
Now I get nothing when I reboot the machine other than windows..
What am I overlooking? And is there a way that I can bring up this
installed version of Fedora (core6) using the rescue disk? If this is
possible what would be the boot line to get things running?

I am totally puzzled - what have I done apart from editing the
modprobe.conf that is different to you?
