BRLTTY
by Chris Norman
Hi people,
Does anyone know how to get brltty to talk all the time using festival? I'm
running FC4, and have brltty and festival installed, however, the command:
brltty -b bn -s fv
doesn't do anything.
Cheers,
Chris Norman

Disk Problems
by Wojciech Komornicki
I rebooted my FC4 installation only to find that it hung after loading
all the packages. I went into rescue mode and running fsck on
/dev/sys
I am told that I have a bad boot sector or that the file system is not
an ext2 file system. Since I can mount the disk under /mnt/sysimage am
I running fsck on the wrong file system?

System Crash Troubleshooting
by Tim Alberts
I have a problem with system crash/lockups. I've been running Linux for several years and have seen this problem time and time again. The system log messages at the end of this mail show what I am asking about. I have several times in the past had a box running and after some time of stable operation, the system will start locking up. Rebooting usually gets the thing running for a couple hours. However, the problem never goes away, I have to re-install the OS. I have never been able to diagnose the problem. The only thing that seems consistent is the system messages below. Unfortunately, these messages can run for weeks before the system actually becomes unstable and starts locking up so I never thought much of these messages.
My general question is, do the messages below indicate a problem that can be the cause of my system crash/lockups. If so, how do I start troubleshooting this?
Also, as shown in the logs below, the process crond was opening and closing sessions. However, it appears something happened with init and/or xinetd that caused crond to stop logging sessions for user root. I don't get the sessions for root anymore (I do still get the sessions for postgres), what could have happened?
Note that I am not running PostgreSQL server so I don't know what could possibly have permission/access to open a session for it?
My guess is that my system has been hacked/infected and this is a virus of some kind.

SMART error and K3B issues
by Jean-Rene Cormier
Hi,
I have 2 things here that are bugging me a little bit, first one is I'm
starting to get some SMART errors in my logs. Just a bunch of these:
Device: /dev/hda, 1 Offline uncorrectable sectors
Should I be worried that my HD is gonna die soon?
Also second issue I have is with K3B, whenever it finishes to burn a DVD
I get an error saying that growisofs didn't finish cleanly and the log
don't say that anything is wrong.
Here's what the k3b log looks like:

And also when burning Video DVDs it doesn't use the -dvd-video option
and the DVD is then unreadable as a video DVD, I can read the data off
of it but it's not being recognized as a video DVD. Anybody ever had any
issues like these?
TIA

Learning Bash Questions: the MV command
by Dotan Cohen
I am trying to learn as I go with bash on a FC4 install. I need to do
two things that are confounding me:
1) I need to move all the photos from a huge, complex tree to one big
directory. Easy:
$ find . -name "*.jpg" -exec mv '{}' /home/dotancohen/big_directory \;
However, there are a few photos that have duplicate file names in
different directories. In this case, it overwrites. That is bad! I
tried adding the -i flag to prompt me, but it takes the next 'mv' as a
response to the prompt, and the next 'mv' fails. Is there a way to
have it not fail the next mv, yet not overwrite? Or better yet, in the
case of duplicate file names, to append something to the end of the
file name, so that it will not be duplicate? Of course, if _that_ file
name is taken, it should append something else, etc. Is this too
complex for Bash?
2) I will then be left with a huge tree with mostly empty directories.
I need to remove the empty directories, but leave those in place that
do contain files. Is there a way to check if a directory is populated
before 'rm'ing it? If the directory contains another directory that
_is_ empty, then of course they should both be deleted. Er, is this
possible?
Thank you in advance.

find and convert ogg to mp3
by Mick M.
Hello list;
I recently burned an audio CD with mp3 files.
My portable player played the first few tracks then barfed.
I *know* that all the files are mp3 so was surprised.
Upon investigation it turns out that soem of them were .ogg instead.
I used konqueror to convert them and chose .mp3 but got .ogg
[root@localhost ive_been_thinking_about_you]# ls -l *.mp3
-rw-rw-r-- 1 mick mick 6145448 Feb 7 15:34 def_12_mix.mp3

-rw-rw-r-- 1 mick mick 5216619 Feb 7 15:36 vocal_dub.mp3
When I run 'file' I get:
[root@localhost ive_been_thinking_about_you]# file *.mp3
def_12_mix.mp3: Ogg data, Vorbis audio, stereo, 44100 Hz, ~128000

[root@localhost ive_been_thinking_about_you]#
I have a lot of directories that *should* be .mp3.
How do I get 'file' to pickout the .ogg files?
Also how to convert them to .mp3?
Is this a bug in konqueror?

[FC4] System locks up when booting installation DVD
by Carsten Gaebler
Hi,
when I boot FC4 from the installation DVD, the boot messages read
Loading vmlinuz
Loading initrd.img
Ready
Then the screen becomes blank with a blinking cursor and the system is
locked up. The only thing I can do is reset the machine through the reset
button.
Any hints?

Fedora Core 3 questions
by Lawrence R. Stumpf
Hello, I have Fedora Core 3 kernel 2.6.9-1.667, HPG55 printer,
hpG55.ppd, hpijs-1.6, and CUPS-1.1.22. Question #1-My BIOS asks if my
operating system is a plug-and-play one. Yes or no? Question #2-My BIOS
says If your operating system is OS/2 and main memory size over 64 MB
select OS2, otherwise select Non-OS2. Which should I select? Question
#3-In my BIOS I have selected the ECP mode for the Onboard Parallel
Port. The ECP mode asks which Direct Memory Access channel, 3 or 1.
Which should I select? Question #4-My HPG55 printer works fine in
parallel hookup but does not print in usb hookup. lpinfo -v recognizes
the printer as direct usb. lsusb shows Bus 002 Device 002:ID 03f0:0011
Hewlett-Packard. However /dev/usb/ file shows lp0 with 0 bytes and -rw-
rw--- instead of crw-rw=== 1 lp sys 180. I think Fedora Core 3 is
creating a regular lp0 file instead of a device node. What should I do
now? Thanks for your help. Larry

How to convert ext2 -> ext3
by Reg Clemens
How do I convert an ext2 file system to ext3?
I know Ive done this before, but cant remember the command,
and my searching hasnt turned up anything...
And while Im at it...
WHY is it that sometimes when you install FC4 you get
the option to build ext3 file systems and other times you DONT?
The current conversion is due to the latter fact.
I just put a new disk in a PII machine, and when I got to the
disk stuff, I could only make an ext2 file system.
