Missing /etc/clamav.conf from RPM?
by Dan Thurman
Folks,
I have yum installed clamav and was getting prepared to
configure it and I notice that missing is the /etc/clamav.conf
or /etc/clamd.conf depemding on what the installation manual
says.
I note that there is a /etc/clamd.d directory with two files:
amavisd.conf milter.conf but I don't think these replace the
above missing files?
Please let me know if there is something I am doing wrong and
while you're at it. perhaps point me to the link where I can
install the ClamAV on FC5?
Thanks!

one more time: integrating another printer driver into FC5
by Frank-Michael Fischer
After successfully installing FC5 I realized my Canon iP4100 printer is
not supported under Fedora. Canon, however, provides Linux drivers as
RPMs. These install nicely. After installing the driver, I can add a
printer using CUPS but not when using the printer admin tool coming with
FC5, because the new driver is still not listed; CUPS however lists ONLY
the new driver. Something is strange here, any idea how I could fix this?

Sharing Thunderbird Mails Between Linux and Windows
by Manish Kathuria
In order to make the same set of emails accessible on both Windows XP
Home and Fedora Core on my dual boot laptop, I have created a separate
FAT32 partition which I use just for storing the Thunderbird mail files
and directories. While working on Linux I mount this partition through
an appropriate entry in /etc/fstab and have configured the Thunderbird
profile in Linux in such a manner that it points to the files and
directories on this mounted FAT32 filesystem for accessing mails for
different accounts. I also make sure that I am using the same version of
Thunderbird on Windows and Linux.
Things had been working perfectly fine except for some small hitches but
recently after I compacted the mail folders and deleted trash while
working on Linux, the whole partition got corrupted and a number of
mails were lost. Though I was able to repair the FAT32 mail partition
and recover most of the files, its created some doubts in my mind
regarding this whole arrangement and robustness of FAT32 filesystem
under Linux.
Has anyone tried something similar ? Its important for me to have the
mails accessible in Windows as well as Linux but not at the cost of data
corruption and loss. What all can be done to make this arrangement more
stable and robust and prevent any data corruption ?
I would really appreciate some suggestions or pointers in this regard.
Thanks,
Manish

FC5 and Dell 2005FPW display
by SternData
Configured FC5 to use my Dell 2005FPW display at 1680x1050. I wind up
with the monitor acting like a window on a much larger screen. Moving
the mouse to the edges displays everything, but I'm not seeing
everything at once.
Has anyone got a working xorg.conf for this monitor?

Found, a new rootkit
by Gene Heskett
Greetings folks;
In doing some checking of a web server, we found an irc port open on
31377, one of the black hatters favorites. A port that portsentry was
supposed to be rejecting but wasn't.
We stumbled over several items over the last few days, but the most
obvious one was a directory called .sk, located in /usr/share/misc.
Its payload seemed fairly simple, to make an underground irc chat server
out of the box.
It does this with a shell script that echos several kilobytes of octal
strings to gzip in the unpack mode > to a file in the local directory
called .sk, and it contains a login replacement also. We did not find
that login was the one installed however. Which may be a clue that
theres even more smoke in this camp than what we've found yet.
The execution installs it by cp .sk /usr/bin/apmd, but puts it
in /usr/bin as opposed to the real apmd's location of /usr/sbin, and
adds a starter line so its enabled on boot to something we haven't
found yet. It also appears to start a third instance of portsentry
somehow.
We've cut our bandwidth use in half by getting rid of that. We also
checked the logs and added several dozen more addresses
to /etc/hosts.deny, including many script based password guess attempts
that didn't get in. And put portsentry in its most paranoid anal mode
with a few additions yet.
Just thought everybody would like to know about this bit of black hat
tomfoolery.

People having trouble with vz bouncing email to me should add the word
'online' between the 'verizon', and the dot which bypasses vz's
stupid bounce rules. I do use spamassassin too. :-)

Evolution: Why are images not displayed?
by Dan Thurman
Folks,
I guess it did not occur to me until now since I am starting
to use Evolution's Email system... is that when I receive unsolicited
email that are html formed, I noticed that *all* of the images are shown
with the "X" images instead of the picture they are supposed to be.
Is that normal?
One thing I like about M$ desktops over linux (fedora) is that
"all of this mundane stuff" is mostly already installed so you
wouldn't notice... images and most things are there and is taken
for granted. That is the way things should be IMHO.
Due to the various reasons of legality (blah, blah, blah) - it
seems that linux makes it as easy as doing a root canal when
you have to figure out just exactly what needs to be done to
install the various "necessary packages" in order to complete
the "missing picture" be it the web-browser, (html aware) the
email applications and so on. This is a major gripe at least
for me.
Can anyone tell me what needs to be done for evolution?
I know that there are other sites to try to make things easy
such as http://www.stanton-finley.net but come on... shouldn't
these things eclipse M$ or at least get on-par with M$ who goes
out of their way to make things easier for their customers for
the express purpose of customer retention?
Kind regards,
Dan

k3b - unsupported format
by gary
howdy - I ripped a cd to an mp3 file using sound-juicer. Now I am
attempting to burn the file to a cd using k3b. Unfortunately I keep
getting this message = Unable to handle the following files due to an
unsupported format: I have reinstalled both k3b and k3b-mp3 with no
change. I have been using k3b since fc1 was released, with few problems.

Yes, I checked sha1sum on all of the images and they
checked out. I also ran the "disk-checks" at the start
of the FC disc #1 where it asks and it checked out as
well.

Are RWs a problem?
by Anne Wilson
I haven't used RW disks for ages, but since I wanted to experiment a bit, it
seemed sensible. I put a CD-RW into k3b (FC4) and it erased it happily, but
I can't get it to burn to the disk at all. I'm just getting messages like
Error trying to open /dev/hdd exclusively ... retrying in 1 second.
/usr/bin/cdrecord: Device or resource busy. Cannot open '/dev/hdd'. Cannot
open SCSI driver.
I did the same batch of files onto a CD-R without any problem at all.
Is this a known problem?
