Lost anti-aliasing
by Matthias Bauw
hi there,
I am using Fedora 5 for quite a while now, I have always used gnome but
recently I started playing around with
KDE and XFCE. But when I logged in in Gnome again I lost anti-aliasing on
the desktop of the user with wich I have logged in in both
other systems. On all the other users nothing is wrong.
I have added some screenshots for you to see, maybe someone knows a solution
for this?
Thanks a lot
Matt.

Firefox upgrade
by Henk Altena
Recently I upgraded the default installed firefox (FC5_64)
firefox-1.5.0.1-9 to version 1.5.0.6-2
Suddenly I can not access any https site. Firefox gives an error: no
PERSONAL SECURITY MANAGER installed.
In the 'old' version in prefences-advanced-security devices is a lot of
information BUT in the upgraded version the same page is EMPTY.
How can I solve this problem ?
Henk

skype
by François Patte
Bonjour,
I encounter some audio problem with skype.
First, I could receive the sound from my correspondant but I could not
reply: he did not hear me. This was solved using
artsdsp -m /usr/bin/skype
Now the problems are:
1- if another audio device is working (xmms for instance), the ring tone
of an incoming call is not mixed with the music displayed.
2- if I receive a call and answer, I can no more use xmms without loging
off skype, skype doe not liberate the dsp device.
Is there a solution to these problems?
I am running FC4 with last kernel. I do not have KDE, only a few
packages (arts, k3b,...)
Thank you.

Checking internet connection without a winbox
by Dotan Cohen
I find that my internet connection is very slow. I speed test my
conection and it comes out at ~170 kilo bytes per second, which sits
well with a 1.5 MBS line. When I ping google, I have about 80% packet
loss, and the packets take 200-300 ms.
My ISP says that the infrastuture company is to blame. The
infrastructure says that there is no problem with them, and that my
router or computer is to blame. They have a windows tool to check it,
but I've no winbox here right now. Until I run their tool and
eliminated my machine as the source of the problem, they won't help me
pinpoint the problem.
What can I do to pinpoint the problem, or at least discount my machine
and my router as problematic? Thanks.

kudzu and modems.
by akonstam@trinity.edu
I can't understand the behavior of kudzu in respect to my serial
modem. After initial installation it detects the modem but after that
it is ignored. What I mean is I can remove the modem and kudzu ignores
the change, or I can remove the modem from the kudzu database and
kudzu ignores the change. I can run: kudzu --class MODEM and kudzu
will remove all my hardware from its database except the MOUSE but it
still ignores the modem.
How can I get kudzu to notice that I have changed, removed or added
the modem?

bonobo-activation-server hangs occasionally in FC5...
by Patrick Doyle
Has anybody else seen this? Every once in a while, I'll click the
"Email" icon, the load shoots up to 1 and nothing happens. If I kill
the instance of bonobo-activation-server that is sitting at the top of
my "top" list, Evolution pops up. I have also seen this when trying
to start a new shell window.
There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to this. It just
happens occasionally, although, I have seen it happen more regularly
when the processor is under a high load. (which makes things tough,
when the reason I wanted to open a new shell window was to kill off
the process that was hogging the CPU :-)

Laptop freezes with FC5
by awrobinson-ml@nc.rr.com
I have recently installed FC5 along side of FC4 on my emachines laptop.
When booted into FC5, after running for a period of time, the laptop
suffers a hard freeze. No keys work. The mouse does not work. I cannot
ping the laptop from other PCs on my network. The only way to regain
control is to hold down the power button until the laptop powers off.
I strongly suspect this a heat issue. The friend I got the laptop from
originally bought it at a deep discount because it would freeze up on
several prior potential customers. He realized the fan was not running
after the laptop booted and concluded that the WinXP home edition
installed did not have a driver for the fan. He loaded Ubuntu and it
worked like a charm. I have been running FC4 for 4 or 5 months without
problem as well. The problem has apparently returned with FC5.
Anyone know what I need to do to get FC5 to run the fan on my laptop?
This is an area I am very ignorant in.
Thanks!
