Re: What is the language "British"?
by Ian Astley
Good $whatevertimeofthedayitisinyourpartoftheworld, everyone.
Interesting that this topic has produced more responses than all the
Windows rants put together.
Personally, I find that the real problem is not American English or
British English or whatever. I once had the privilege of listening to
a lecture by John Searle (not even in an English-speaking country at
that!) and it was a couple of hours well spent. No trace of, Did he
spell that with a zed or an ess -- or perhaps a zee? The real problem
is rubbish English -- and there's more than enough of that around.
Turning to a slightly more on-topic tack, one of the things which
frustrates me with just about any spell-checker on any platform is
the way in which reactions to Trans-Atlantic differences have
affected the way in which we spell. For example, in contrast to most
"British English" norms, I insist on the -ize ending for verbalizing
nouns because that is the traditional British spelling (and Bill
Bryson, bless his American socks, is only one of the more recent
writers to have his rants on this put into print); but I also prefer
to retain the French etymology of words like colour (even if we only
retain part of that reference!). Webster may have had a political
point in introducing those orthographic changes to American English
when he first brought out his dictionary, just as many peoples on the
planet have a point in spelling English words as they hear them, for
the simple reason that that is how they write their own language
(e.g. Indonesia, which has been mentioned before).
I have done enough mucking about with altering set-ups and am
wondering if there is any sort-of painless way of introducing my
etymological neurosis into the resident spell-checkers on Unix systems?
Yours in anticipation of corrections to every comma in the above,
Ian A

Kickstart and dependencies
by James Evans
I am doing a Kickstart install of Everything yet Anaconda still spends
ages trying to verify dependencies. Is there a way around this?
Also, sometimes I make a Kickstart file and would like to install less
than everything but not verify dependencies. The -ignoredeps options
seems not to work. Is there any way to stop Anadconda from verifying
dependencies?
Thanks!

Yum error - "Error in YUM setup" after updating
by Arch Willingham
The other night, I ran YUMEX like normal (FC6, test2). It did its update like normal and updated about twenty packages. On of the packages it said it updated was "yum.noarch 2.9.5-3". After I rebooted, I tried to rum YUMEX and it immediatly popped up with "Error in YUM setup". Once I quit YUMEX, it gives an "Exception occured" and says this:

how to obtain single-line scroll with wheel mouse? (FC5)
by JJ
Hello All:
I use FC5 on three different desktop computers and on
all of them the scroll wheel on my mouse moves about 8
lines per notch. To me, this is too much and I would
like the mouse to scroll only one or two lines. The
mouse behaves this way in a variety of programs
(python command window, gedit, Lyx, and so on). Does
anyone know how to change the scroll rate of a wheel
mouse? You can not do it through the Mouse
Preferences dialog box. Do you have to change
something in the Fedora code and rebuild the system?
Thanks. John

2 Problems with email clients
by Jon Shorie
This is a strange problem that I have been happening since I upgraded to
Fedora Core 5. The problem has not gone away with updates either.
In Kmail, if I receive an email that is html and has a table that goes onto a
second page, when printing to any printer (or previewing or print to .pdf)
only the text above the table prints on the first page and the table is
crunched onto the second page. This makes the message unreadable.
I have googled for this problem but have not had any success.
I am currently running KMAIL 1.9.4 using KDE 3.5.4.1.fc5 from fedora updates.
The problem started with the version that came with fedora core 5 and has
been in every release of kmail and kde since then.
I access my email through imap so if I leave the message in my inbox, it
should be accessable to any email client that can get an imap connection.
The way I have tried to get around the printing problem is to open up
thunderbird and print the message from there. This works, but a second
problem then happens.
Any email that I click on in thunderbird to look at or print seems to
be "locked" If I then close thunderbird and reopen kmail, any message that I
clicked on or printed from thunderbird only has the message header, it does
not show the text. If I look at several message, then kmail will crash with
the following message:
"KMail got signal 6 (Crashing)"
This is a major problem for me as these html messages are quotes on computer
parts from TigerDirect. It is part of our purchasing controlls here at work
that I print out the quote, make a purchase order, then fax it off.
I understand that this may not be efficient but I cannot change policy, I just
need it to work.
I have been using kmail since 2001 and it has worked well up until FC5.
Please any help would be greatly appreciated.

LAMP Experts needed
by Jack Gates
I am looking for some serious coders that want to make a name for
themselves and/or a lot of money.
I need to talk to any one who is considered an Expert with any of
these:
Linux
Apache
MySQL or PostgreSQL
PHP, Perl, Python
HTML
CSS
XML
XSL
I am going to convince my employer to replace a very expensive package
that they are using right now. This project will take several months
to complete and then will be on going with a monthly maintenance and
service.
If you have any interest at all and want to know the details contact
me. Send what you can and will do for this project to me at
jlgates(a)charter.net. It is going to be a web interface interacting
with a very large database.

Help!!! Help!!!!
by Guy Schlosser
Hey guys, I have a question for anyone who can answer it. I have been
trying to install Fedora Core 3 for two days now, and am totally confused.
The reason I'm using 3 is because it's currently thee latest version that
has the Speakup modified kernel for a talking install. I'm really hoping
there is one when fedora core 6 comes out. What is happening, is that the
installation seems to lock up at the disk testing screen. I will try to
tab/alt+tab between OK and Skip, and get no where. I had some sighted
assistance for a while yesterday, and found out that the problem occurs
whether speakup is loaded or not. When speakup is loaded, it sends my
synthesizer (whether dec-talk express or Braille note) into space, and will
never quit talking until it reaches the OK or skip buttons for the disk
test. Any one have any ideas? I would greatly appreciate any help I can
get with this matter. Here is my system config.
Processor: Pentium IV 2.8 GHZ Hyperthread on an Abit ai7 main board
1 GB RAM
AC97 based sound
Seagate 40 GB IDE hard drive
NVidia Geforce 4 video card.
Again, thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
Thanks,
Guy
