DVD problem in FC5
by William Murray
Hello there,
I have a problem with FC5, must have started within the last
month, but I don't know which update.
My dvd drive (TSSTcorp CDRW/DVD TSL462C; device /dev/scd0) no longer
automounts CD/DVDs when inserted. Now I can get root and mount manually,
but it is annoying.
Actually I have two options:
-> No boot-time kernel option
This gives correct auto-mounting, but no DMA--> DVDs unwatchable
-> hdc=noprobe
This gives no auto-mount, but I can watch DVDs
I used to get both at once.
Any clues anyone?
Thanks,
Bill
[Ps 2.6.28 kernel seems just the same]

Suggestions for e-mail client:
by R. G. Newbury
I have been using thunderbird but unfortunately it saves all the
messages in one large globular file. I cannot merge e-mails which have
been retrieved/sent from different computers into one source.
I like the way thunderbird works, otherwise.
I need an e-mail client which keeps messages as single items (files) and
which can rebuild its indexes of the messages in each folder without
painful interventions, so that I can merely rsync the appropriate folder
structure into one place for a full backup of all computers.
(I have had these features for years using pmmail in OS/2 but I have
made the switch and will not go back..but I do miss some things.)
Suggestions please.

fedora core 4: no fd0u1680?
by fedoralist@subtropolix.org
I've been using core 4 for quite some time now and this is the first
time i've had to think about device nodes. I'd like to mount a floppy
that's formatted to 1680 density but can't figure out how the device
nodes work. Googling has gotten me nowhere (except a lot of Japanese
pages--apparently this format is popular there).
For starters, there's no fd0u1680. And what are /dev/fd/[0,1,2,3] for?
Does this have something to do with Udev? I tried and failed to
understand how that works (or, really, what it is).
I have another box i can use in the mean time, but any pointers would be
very much appreciated.

How to recover Fedora Core 5?
by Vinicius
Hello,
I have installed a Windows XP on another partition than my FC5. The system boot
on Windows. I'm unable to do a dual-boot FC5 and XP.
The steps followed are below:
1. Boot from DVD, then on the prompt: linux rescue;
2. from the rescue mode prompt: chroot /mnt/sysimage;
3. then: /sbin/grub-install /dev/hda.
So, occurs an error about stage1 incomplete or something like that.
Any ideas, please?
TIA,
Vinicius.

Checking internet connection without a winbox
by Dotan Cohen
I find that my internet connection is very slow. I speed test my
conection and it comes out at ~170 kilo bytes per second, which sits
well with a 1.5 MBS line. When I ping google, I have about 80% packet
loss, and the packets take 200-300 ms.
My ISP says that the infrastuture company is to blame. The
infrastructure says that there is no problem with them, and that my
router or computer is to blame. They have a windows tool to check it,
but I've no winbox here right now. Until I run their tool and
eliminated my machine as the source of the problem, they won't help me
pinpoint the problem.
What can I do to pinpoint the problem, or at least discount my machine
and my router as problematic? Thanks.

Swap space question
by nicolas angel
Hi, i would to ask something about swap space:
i quote from the book "How Linux Works—What Every Super-User Should Know"
"Reserve two to five times as much disk space as you have real memory for
swap. It doesn't make sense to go any lower, because you may actually risk
running out of memory. If you go higher and actually intend to use all of
this swap space, you will likely suffer serious performance problems because
the system will spend all of its time swapping (a condition known as
thrashing). "
i can't understand why if create a really big swap partition i will have a
performance decrease????It seems to me
that in the worst case scenario, i will be throwing disk space [because the
system will never use the swap partition if it doesn't need it......why this
would have a negative impact on the system......]
thanks in advance,
Nicolas Ang
