Yum on x86_64
by Gareth Bult
Hi,
I seem to have (finally :) ) acquired a complete(ish) / working x86_64
system .. but I'm still having trouble with a few bits, not least "yum".
I get;
Server: Fedora Core 1 - i386 - Base
Server: Fedora Core 1 - i386 - Released Updates
Server: Fedora Core 1 - i386 - Unreleased Updates
Finding updated packages
Traceback (most recent call last):

File "clientStuff.py", line 363, in getupdatedhdrlist
File "clientStuff.py", line 409, in bestversion

[root@squizzey oddjob]#
(This is a modified system [2.6.0-test11] however it seems to run well)
Pointing it at mozilla's channel for SeaMonkey seems to work if I
disable the default channels, however...
Anyone any ideas ?
(I was sort of expecting to see it say "no x86_64 updates supported yet"
as opposed to a complete crash)
Also, can yum pull SRPMS and rebuild them ?

Gareth.

RocketRAID 1740 driver for Fedora 7
by Ranbir
Hello Everyone,
I have a rocketraid 1740 controller that I want to use in a soon to be
installed Fedora 7 system. Highpoint's website doesn't have any Fedora
7 drivers, but they do provide a package that will let end users build
the rr1740x module for any 2.4 or 2.6 series kernel.
How would one build the rr1740x module for Fedora 7 if one doesn't have
a Fedora 7 system to build the driver on? Can I install the
kernel-devel package from Fedora 7 on a Fedora 6 host, and build the
module that way? Should I use a Fedora 7 virtual machine (e.g. vmware,
xen, etc.)?
Regards,
Ranbir

Subject: sandisk sansa m240
I bought a sansa mdisk 240
I can not figure out how to get a playlist on it.
I can get music on it and play the music I get onto it - but not a
playlist.
I use a shell script to copy files to it - since my mp3's sometimes have
very long file names. When they are copied to the sansa they have names
001.MP3 002.MP3 etc.
It does not play them by file name alphabetical order, I can't figure
out what it does to figure out default play order.
I tried copying a very basic .m3u playlist to it -
001.MP3
002.MP3
003.MP3
I can see the playlist in the sansa but it reports no files when I
select a playlist.
USB settings are set to MSC
Has anyone figured out how to get a playlist onto a sansa m240?
I'm almost wondering if it is something silly like wanting the playlist
to have DOS line breaks - but before I play around too much, I thought
I'd ask if anyone else has done it.
my iPod mini broke :(
That was easy to use in Linux (gtkpod) - but I don't want to buy another
iPod until they make one with a user serviceable battery.
I have the e280 and I've been struggling with this myself.
The playlist format is a specially-formatted UTF-16LE text file. I don't like that either.
I mount mine as a plain USB disk and then use a couple of Python scripts I hand-rolled to create playlists. I actually started writing a little GUI for myself using Qt, but I didn't finish it. Maybe this weekend...

Thunderbird and Snapshot
by Paul Lemmons
I am almost certain I have done this before but I am getting old and may
be imagining things. I have opened up a new message in Thunderbird
(latest and greatest). I have verified that the format is "Rich Text
(HTML)". I go to KSnapShot and snap a section of the screen and click on
the "Copy to Clipboard" button. I then try to paste it into the note and
it simply does nothing.
Am I missing something? I would like to paste an image into a note to
send as documentation to someone.

OT Need to find a really good Linux introductory site ??
by Bill Case
Hi;
This question is good for one day only.
I am giving a talk tonight to about 20 people about Linux. All of them
will be Windows users and all will be very non-tech.
I just thought of asking here this morning.
I have prepared a handout with most of the common Linux sites including
sites for various distributions (Fedora is at the top of the list).
Googled *Linux* to find a start site to recommend. Found lots of sites,
but, you know, there wasn't one really exciting, sales oriented
(motivational) site that says "I really got to find out about or try
this operating system".
Do you know of a site I could recommend as a starting place for this
type of Windows audience that I could I could use in my little sales
pitch tonight?

Notes 8 Client on F7 (or F8)
by Christopher A. Williams
Has anyone found the set of magic incantations that will enable you to
install Lotus Notes 8.0 on F7 (or F8T3)?
I've had nothing but nightmarish troubles getting any of it to work. All
of my on-line searches of archives have also turned up nothing.
Cheers,
Chris

sensors applet
by Bill Davidsen
Still not working for me with the 2.6.22 kernel. I believe it's
2.6.22.1-33.fc7 and the similar latest in fc6.
It works with the 2.6.2[01] kernels... just looking for feedback, the
sendors command works after rerunning sensors-find.

Fedora May Be Killing Your Laptop's Hard Drive?
by Timothy Murphy
There has been a recent scare posting on SlashDot,
(quoting <https://launchpad.net/bug59695.html>)
"Ubuntu May Be Killing Your Laptop's Hard Drive",
suggesting that Ubuntu
"may be dramatically shortening the life of your laptop's
hard drive due to an aggressive power-saving feature".
It wasn't clear to me if the action described
is actually restricted to Ubuntu,
or is common to all Linux distributions.
Does it in fact affect Fedora?

Emacs / KDE bug?
by Dean S. Messing
I just finished installing KDE on an up-to-date x86_64 F7 machine
on which I had originally excluded KDE.
M-x version w/in Emacs returns 22.1.1
I am seeing a window maximisation bug with Emacs running on the KDE
desktop and am wondering if anyone else sees it.
I'm not sure if this is Emacs or KDE. When I maximise Emacs (say)
vertically with a middle mouse click on the middle top-right
"maximise" button in the Emacs title bar, the window maximises
vertically just fine. But another click doesn't restore it's size.
Same for horizontal and full maximisation.
There's no such problem when I maximise the Konsole window.
In Gnome the Emacs maximise button doesn't seem to understand
vertical and horizontal maximisation but full max (left mouse click)
works properly.
Thus my confusion.
