Excessive network traffic -
by Bob Goodwin
My ISP limits my usage to 17 gB per 30 days and updates this number
continuously, the exact manner by which this is computed is n unknown to
me and possibly to them too? But I have been fighting this problem for
a number of weeks now having been warned once that I had exceeded the
80% point [13.6 gB]. We have used the system pretty much without
concern for usage for more than a year so this is new.
I have four computers connected to the LAN with internet access. This
F7 box, an Apple Mac, and two MS XP computers.
One of the XP boxes is my teen aged [15 yrs, twins] grandson's. In the
process of trying to get usage under control I had physically removed
their access device [Linksys WET11]. After getting our usage reduced to
about 6 gB from 15+ not long ago I gave them back the internet device
and enabled access to iTunes this last weekend since one boy wanted to
download some music. I left the Netgear [WGR614v6] router unblocked for
about an hour and they collected what ever it was they wanted and I
restored it to blocked again.
What else they did with the computer, what sites they visited, I don't
know but they are limited by what I've blocked in the router and some
parental control software I also subscribe to.
However once they were allowed back on line it appears that our usage
score per the [Wildblue indications] has begun to skyrocket again, about
800 megs in the day following their system reconnection. It looks to me
like most iTunes downloads are on the order of 5 mB, 800 mB at the speed
we have would take more than an hour. Most of the time their computer
has been turned off. I have VNC installed and if I see it on and not in
use [I check the Netgear router] I shut their computer off.
My question is is it possible that some site they have visited triggers
something that is driving our usage up even though all the computers are
powered down leaving only mine and the Netgear router running. Even
then when I am not using the internet I usually "deactivate" it via
"system control network."
Gkrellm seems to keep an accurate reading of what I am using in this
computer, both upload and download so I don't think I am causing the
problem and it seems to have restarted since I re-enabled the kids XP box.
Any suggestions as to what to look for will be appreciated.

Power management on intel i945 video chipset
by Marcelo Magno T. Sales
People,
I have a Centrino notebook with intel i945 video chipset and power
management has been a little of a problem lately.
If I use the xorg i810 driver, I can control LCD brightness correctly
and I can suspend to RAM, but I can't resume after a suspend. The LCD
will not turn on again. I had this problem in FC6 and corrected it
altering the suspend and resume scripts to save the state of LCD
brightness to a file when suspending and reading it back when
resuming. In FC6, this information was in /proc/acpi/asus/brn and the
functions for suspending and resuming were
in /etc/pm/functions-intel.
In F7, I have the same problem with i810 driver (can't resume after
suspending, LCD does not turn on), but there's no /proc/acpi/asus/brn
and I couldn't find the suspend/resume functions.
So I tried the new intel driver. After booting, it allows me to adjust
LCD brightness as I wish, and it turns on the LCD correctly after
suspending/resuming. However, once I've done a suspend/resume, the
LCD brightness is set to maximum and I can't adjust it anymore,
unless I reboot.
Anyone has this working 100% on a intel i945 video chipset? How did
you do it?
Thanks,
Marcelo

Hard Drive Speed
by Todd Simi
Hi,
I know this may be a silly question since it probably a hardware limitation,
but I'm running F7 and would like to know what I can do to increase the hard
drive seek time, if anything.
I have a pretty new SATA drive at 3GB/sec and it seems to have to seek longer
than I'd expect.
It's running with DMA4, AHCI, etc.
The rest is an ASUS MB with a Core 2 Duo 6400 @ 2.4 Mhz & 2GB Ram @ 800Mhz.
Are there any setting from the standard that by help?
here's the hdparm output

Excessive bounces on this list
by Simon Slater
G'day all,
Just a quick email question. For the second time my subscription to
this list has been suspended due to excessive bounces. When it happened
last year I thought I had it fixed by making sure Evolution removed the
emails from the server.
But it happened again this week. I checked the mail from the ISP web
site and no mail stored there, not even as marked for deletion. I have
mailed the list administrator, but thought someone here may have
suggestions in the meantime.
Is there some more check boxes in Evolution to be checked? What couses
bouncing, excessive or not? Has Tigger got into my system somewhere?

Simon

Sandisk Sansa c250
by Steven P. Ulrick
Hello, Everyone
I just purchased a Sandisk Sansa c250. The only problem is that it is
real picky about id3 tags. All of my mp3's were recently re-tagged
using Easytag. The c250 proceeds to lump them all as "Unknown Artist"
and "Unknown Album." I then figured out that if I remove all the tags,
and just tag the album and the artist thusly:
id3tag -2 --album="Dancing In Jerusalem" --artist="Lamb" *.mp3
that such mp3's are accessible by the Album or the Artist. Since I
know VERY little about regular expressions and shell scripts, I am
rather unwilling to tag the track names and track numbers with id3tag.
Hence the other problem, using the above referenced mp3's as an example:
The above mp3's sort under "Lamb" as the artist and "Dancing In
Jerusalem" as the album. But, since I have not set the track numbers,
the mp3's appear to be listed in random order :( I will set the track
numbers for the above example just for fun to see what happens... The
result was not good. The files still sort in random order.
If any of you have had the same issue with this exact same model, or
one made by the same company, I would like to hear your successes and
your failures.
Also, if any of you are using any kind of mp3 player that does not make
you jump through hoops like this just to get your mp3's sorted
correctly, I would like to know that as well.
Thank you,
Steven P. Ulrick

Belkin Wireless G USB
by John Pierce
Hello!
I posted this to the linux wireless list and have received not
response. I thought maybe someone on the fedora list might have had
some success.
I just purchased a belkin wireless g usb adapter and am not having any
luck getting it to work.
The following is the output from various commands, if more info is
needed then I will post it back.
Distro: Fedora 7
Kernel: 2.6.22.4-65.fc7
I have created a ifcfg-wlan0 file in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
with the following:
GATEWAY=192.168.1.1
TYPE=Wireless
DEVICE=wlan0
BOOTPROTO=static
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
IPADDR=192.168.1.60
ONBOOT=yes
USERCTL=yes
IPV6INIT=no
PEERDNS=yes
ESSID=thedungeon
CHANNEL=11
MODE=Managed
RATE=Auto
SECURITYMODE=open
I have a keys-wlan0 file in that same directory with the wep key for my router.
I set up a file named zd1211 in the /etc/modprobe.d/ directory with
the following in it.
alias wlan0 zd1211rw_mac80211
This is the output of dmesg immediately after inserting the usb adapter.
usb 2-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 7
usb 2-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
usb 2-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 7
wmaster0: Failed to select rate control algorithm
wmaster0: Failed to initialize rate control algorithm
usb 2-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 7
zd1211rw_mac80211: probe of 2-2:1.0 failed with error -2
usbcore: registered new interface driver zd1211rw_mac80211
This is the output of lsusb after inserting the adapter.
Bus 002 Device 007: ID 050d:705c Belkin Components
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 15d9:0a33
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
When I try the run ifup wlan0 this is the output.
zd1211rw_mac80211 device wlan0 does not seem to be present, delaying
initialization.
Every thing I have read indicates that this device is supported in
linux, including the vendor and device id.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Asus p4p800 deluxe BROKEN INSTALL on FC5- FC6-FC7
by Randy Ramsdell
Ok nice to be right back in the EXACT same position I was in several
years ago regarding this motherboard and installing FC. I think it was
FC3 that this first became an issue, but I was able to work around it
and install FC. So now, I tried to install FC6/7 and I yet to find a way
to get it installed.
So now it has been a year or so without being able to run Fedora/CentOS.
Please help as I really don't want to use Ubunto and especially not Suse.
Anyone have an issue installing on the Asus board?
Trying to install causes a seg fault when dealing with the hard drives
either in BIOS setting compatibility mode or SATA mode. Anaconda shows
the hard drives as "/dev/mapper" or something like that, but as you
know, they should appear as /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. All I ever see is a
single "/dev/mapper" which suggests that Anaconda sees a raid array even
after I fdisk the drives. Of coarse this also rendered the system
unusable after the seg fault resulted in a reboot.
