[SOLVED] "man -k" and "(rpm)"
by Robert P. J. Day
since it piqued my curiosity, i decided to ask on the rpm list about
what means:
$ man -k yelp
yelp (rpm) - A system documentation reader from the Gnome project
^^^^^??
apparently, all it means is that that information is being pulled out
of the "whatis" database, and is effectively the same as what you'd
get from grepping the file /var/cache/man whatis.
quite simply, package names and one-line summaries have been added to
the whatis database for quite some time now in response to this
enhancement request:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=175595
so that's while you'll see normal man output for, say, "strace"
thusly:
$ man strace
STRACE(1) ... blah blah ...
but you'll also see:
$ man -k strace
autrace (8) - a program similar to strace
strace (1) - trace system calls and signals
strace (rpm) - Tracks and displays system calls associated with a running process
it's also why, even when a command like "yelp" has no actual man page,
you're still likely to see that single-line, package-related "(rpm)"
entry for it.
huh. learn something every day.

samba & selinux
by McGuffey, David C.
Have had an interesting time getting samba to serve up files on F7.
After doing a lot of rftm and tinkering, it will share test files in
/mnt/winxp_data for both localhost and remote windowz boxes on the LAN.
However when I remove the test files (created with 'touch') and mount an
ntfs partition, I get an selinux error. From the error I deduce that the
selinux type for winxp_data is fusefs_t, and it needs to be
samba_share_t.
But when I try to change the type (using the guidance in the selinux
error message) I get another error.
Is it the way I'm mounting the ntfs partition? Have read that mounting
ntfs partitions and sharing them with samba is problematic. Some report
success by doing the following in fstab:
/dev/sdb2 /mnt/winxp_data ntfs defaults 1
2
But that doesn't seem to solve the problem...at least in my case.
In the end, I'll be formatting /dev/sdb2 as an ext3 partition, and
copying all of my ntfs data to it from /dev/sdb1, and then sharing out
the data from a linux partition. /dev/sdb1 will remain for dual-boot to
WinXP until my conversion to linux is complete. But for now, I'd like to
get samba to share this ntfs partition. Any tips?
selinux error message:
Summary
SELinux is preventing samba (/usr/sbin/smbd) "getattr" to
/mnt/winxp_data (fusefs_t).
Detailed Description
SELinux denied samba access to /mnt/winxp_data. If you want to share
this directory with samba it has to have a file context label of
samba_share_t.
If you did not intend to use /mnt/winxp_data as a samba repository
it could indicate either a bug or it could signal a intrusion attempt.
Allowing Access
You can alter the file context by executing chcon -R -t
samba_share_t
/mnt/winxp_data
The following command will allow this access:
chcon -R -t samba_share_t /mnt/winxp_data
Additional Information
Source Context system_u:system_r:smbd_t
Target Context system_u:object_r:fusefs_t

slow to open a web page, last too long to 'looking up ...'
by L
Hi,
I experienced a slow web page openning. When I try to open a web page eg
http://home.aapt.com.au, It starts 'looking up home.aapt.com.au, this lasts
more than 40 seconds then to start 'transfer from home.aapt.com.au. VERY
SLOW.
However, if I got the ip adddress of this, eg
http://203.63.89.59
the 'looking up' lasts less than 2 seconds and start trasfer ...
I guess it may relate to the ISP dns, apart from the ISP side, what else I
can improve this?
Thanks

Can't install VMWare Server on F7
by Joe Tseng
I'm trying to install VMWS on an updated fresh install of F7 (kernel 2.6.23) using vmware-any-any-update114.tar.gz. I was able to get this done on one machine but not another... This is the msg I'm getting:
gcc: error trying to exec 'cc1plus': execvp: No such file or directory
make[2]: *** [/tmp/vmware-config0/vmmon-only/common/task.o] Error 1
make[1]: *** [_module_/tmp/vmware-config0/vmmon-only] Error 2

make: *** [vmmon.ko] Error 2
make: Leaving directory `/tmp/vmware-config0/vmmon-only'
Unable to build the vmmon module.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the VMWS RPM file and deleting all the crap the install leaves in /tmp, but nothing seems to help. Any help would be appreciated.

iptables slows down access to httpd server
by Steve Lindemann
This, strictly speaking, isn't a Fedora problem, but I'm hoping someone
out there can help.
system config:
dell poweredge 2950
kernel: 2.6.22.9-61.fc6
apache: 2.2.6
problem summary: when iptables is turned on, web pages (graphics in
particular) served up from the box are *extremely* slow to load,
sometimes timing out. when iptables is turned off, web pages served up
from the box load normally. I've compared my /etc/sysconfig/iptables
file to another (fc6) server and they are effectively the same, *but*
I've never had a problem with page loads from the other box.
I'm assuming (yes, I know 8^) that the problem lies with iptables, but
I'm running out of places to look for answers. Should I be looking
somewhere other than the firewall? Has anyone else seen this? I'd
really appreciate any help anyone out there could give.

...ok I did manually edit the file to add the http rule, but up until
now I've not had any problems doing that sort of thing. Iptables does
drive me just a bit crazy, but I do know enough to to that successfully
(up until now that is). Help! ...and thanks!

nvidia
by Karl Larsen
You might have a nvidia video card on your motherboard. There are
two choices here. Try to use the nvidia or turn it off and plug in your
old known video card. Today I wish I had done the latter because using
nvidia with f7 is a pain.
I really do not see a new Linux user ever getting his/her computer
working with nvidia. You need to go to the nvidia web page and get a
tarball and install it, not a new person's thing, or you can get 4 rpm
files and learn to use --nodeps at the proper time.
Hoping that the updates would by now have some nvidia help, after
getting 236 updates last night on my f7-64 bit system it did not fix the
problem. I used the 4 rpm files from www.atrpms.net which worked but
maybe not well. I heard from Ric Moore that the tarball is the way to
go. I will try that on f8.
A bug I keep forgetting to file is the following. A really bad
problem with nvidia is the missing pointer when X windows boots up. You
can do nothing! This is fixed by edit of the /etc/X11/xrog.conf file
adding you want to use a software pointer.
But this will not work if grub.conf has a kernel directive to use
rhxxx which hides the boot up output. While that standard kernel
directive exists you can not get a pointer period.
This bug makes f7 and I expect f8 useless to a new user with nvidia.

dd command to clear start of harddrive
by Nigel Henry
This is not directly Fedora related.
I connect to the Internet through my Smoothwall, and a serial modem. Recently
the machine that the Smoothwall is running on has been playing up. Harddrive
spinning up and down. I have another older machine (1.33GHz, 64MB RAM, and
6GB harddrive) which had Win 2000 pro on it, and was trying to install a
backup Smoothwall on it. The Smoothwall installs ok, and lilo is installed,
but when I reboot the BIOS does the memory check, and all I get next is half
a screenfull of "40's" printed out. they remain for a few seconds, then I
just get a prompt that I can't do anything with.
I am wondering if something has been left behind on the harddrive from the Win
2000 install, that linux has not been able to remove.
I've seen a few times a dd command that can get rid of stuff at the start of a
drive, but stupidly have not written down the info.
Could someone kindly give the required dd command to make sure that the
harddrive is clear of all data.
The machine won't boot off cd, but using smart boot manager on a floppy, I can
get Finnix booted up on it, and work off the CLI.
Thanks for any help from the list.
Nigel.
