tuxtype2 doesn't launch
by Ed Landaveri
I have installed tuxtype2 for my daughters to learn typing but every time I launch it the screen goes black as though it will work but not, it returns to the desktop. If I try to launch it from the terminal It gives me a message:
Load settings: Settings file doesn't exists! Settings not loaded!
Load settings: Settings file doesn't exists! Settings not loaded!
Please can anyone tell me how to fix this? Thanks a lot

Rsync
by Paul Ward
Hi Peeps,
Does anyone know if it is possible to use rsync to back up an ftp site
that uses a password.
I am aware of rsync://[USER@]HOST[:PORT]/SRC [DEST] but how do I
handle the password?
If this is not possible does it mean I have to use sftp?
Thanks in advance

Can scp be used to update a directory?
by Anne Wilson
The scp man page is not very verbose ;-) I want to copy a directory,
recursively, over the lan, but only those files that are new or updated.
MS-DOS could do this back in ...Ummm.... so I can't believe it can't be done
in scp, but I can't see how to do it.

New FC6 Installation DVD released
by Lyvim Xaphir
Latest FC6 Respin installation DVD was released on 2007-01-19. Lots of
known FC6 bugs fixed and it uses the latest updated packages as of Jan
11th. If you have had install problems with Core 6 before, you are
encouraged to try installation with this new FC6 Respin DVD.
http://fedoraunity.org/news-archives/core-6-re-spin-20070111/
"The Fedora Unity Project is proud to announce the release of new ISO
Re-Spins of Fedora Core 6. These Re-Spin ISOs are based on Fedora Core 6
and all updates released as of January 11th, 2007. The ISO images are
available for i386 and x86_64 architectures via BitTorrent starting
Thursday, January 18th, 2007. PPC images will follow within the next 5
days, but will have had only limited testing.
This release was delayed while waiting for fixes to known issues with
Fedora Core 6[1] as well as the creation of a new tool for composing
Re-Spins. Previous releases were built with a homebrew script. This
release was built with the new tool called Pungi[2], developed by Jesse
Keating, a leading community member and Fedora Release Engineer, with
community input. This tool will be used in future official Fedora
releases and for Fedora Unity Re-Spins. We have joined in this effort to
bring a full featured tool to the Fedora community, enabling anyone to
build Re-Spins and Live-Spins now and in the future."

Forgot to mention 2 things:
1) "exit 0" is not good since the file is included in another script
(I think), so you end up skipping the rest of its parent (where dhcp
is started).
You should add something like
if WPA ....
fi
around all the settings via "iwconfig"
2) I had to disable ipv6 completely, otherwise my interfaces (both
wireless and cable) were not able to go up and down. They were up once
and then if-down hanged.

Mounting SD card with specific encoding
by Dotan Cohen
How can I mount an SD card (via USB card reader) to have a specific
filename encoding? My Fedora box is UTF-8, but the SD card in my Nokia
6288 seems to be CP1255 or ISO-8859-8. What mount command should I
use? I read man mount and I see no mention of encodings.
Thanks in advance.

Where do you put all your HTML stuff on a home Linux server?
by Chris G
I've been changing my mind and messing about with this for years and
*still* haven't really come to a sensible final conclusion. It's not
even that it matters all that much but I wish there was an obvious
answer.
There are two basic alternatives, each with advantages and
disadvantages:-
1 - In your home directory
Permissions are easy to deal with, no need to become root to edit
web pages.
But it means that, if the outside world has access, you have to be
*very* careful with apache set up if you want to be sure only the
right bits are visible to the outside world.
You either have to use ~<user> in the URL or you have to add
symbolic links from apache's DocumentRoot.
If there's more than one user (not in my case) using /home makes more
sense.
Backing up is easy as the HTML gets backed up with your home
directory (though there might be bits in DocumentRoot you want to
back up as well).
2 - In apache's DocumentRoot (/var/www/html in my case)
Messier with permissions if you want to edit HTML without becoming
root all the time. Also not so convenient for editing even with
permissions set up OK as it's not in your home directory.
Easier to make sure that any outside access can only see what you
want to be seen.
Cleaner/easier URLs without the need for symbolic links.
Not really practical for multi-user but this doesn't apply for me.
Need to back up separately from /home (though I suppose you could
make /var/html a link across to the /home partition)
I keep a lot of quite dynamic (i.e. frequently changing) files as
HTML, or at least their content is web browsable, so the above issues
are important for me.
Does anyone have any comments, ideas, solutions?

Getting bcm4318 wifi card to work with Fedora 6 & 8
by Rick Bilonick
Several weeks ago I posted that my Broadcom bcm4318 mini pci wifi card
stopped working with Fedora 6 kernels after 2.6.20-1.2962.fc6 in a Dell
Inspiron 2200. I had used ndiswrapper and the error messages I was
getting seemed to indicate that I needed new firmware. Apparently, this
was coming from the newer native bcm43xx driver built into the newer
kernels - not from ndiswrapper. No one seemed to have any clue what was
wrong. I inadvertently discovered that the reason was that ndiswrapper
needed the b43 driver blacklisted (in addition to blacklisting the
bcm43xx driver) for the newer kernels. I found a mention of blacklisting
the b43 driver in someone's posting on the Internet.
I discovered this when I temporarily switched a hard drive from a
different laptop (a Toshiba Satellite A15-S129) that had Fedora 8
installed without ndiswrapper. When I put the F8 drive in the Dell with
the 4318 mini pci wifi card, I still could not get the 4318 to work with
the native drivers (it seemed so close - but would ALWAYS end up causing
the system to freeze while networkmanager was trying to connect). IMO,
the native bcm43xx drivers just will not work with the 4318 in the Dell
Inspiron 2200 under F8. (Maybe someone has it working and can prove me
wrong.) Once I blacklisted the b43 and used ndiswrapper with bcmwl5.inf,
the 4318 worked under F8 (and it works very well as it did before under
F6, and blacklisting b43 under F6 also works with the newer F6 kernels).
So at least I know when I install F8 on the Dell's own hard drive I will
be able to use the 4318.
