F8 resists to be installed
by Paul Smith
Dear All,
I am trying to install F8 in a 500GB hard disk, but when transferring
the installation packages to the disk, during the installation, no
package is transferred and therefore the installation process does not
proceed. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

Fedora vs Ububtu
by Aaron Konstam
It gets sort of tiring to make unfaltering (to Fedora) comparisons to
Ubunbtu get rather tiring. There are advantages and disadvantages to
both systems. The fact that apt and synaptic are available in Fedora
makes the pup vs update manager debate sort of silly.
One gaping hole in the Ubuntu is how to do the equivalent of adding a
repository. How for example would you add the equivalent of the Dell
repository to Ubuntu. It is not at all clear, at least to me.
I am willing to learn if someone is willing to explain. In Ubuntu two
conflicting procedures are presented.
But the real truth is that the two systems are relatively equivalent. In
general Ubuntu uses versions that are generally behind those in Fedora.
It often is pointed out that the update version feature of Ubuntu works
better than the update process in Fedora. But I suspect that is because
the programs available for installation are a much more a closed set.

FC6 to F7 yum update
by Graeme Hilton
Hi,
I'm attempting an upgrade to F7 from FC6.
I have updated the yum repo files to refer to the new repositories, but
issuing the following command produces the output shown:
# yum update yum
Loading "allowdowngrade" plugin
Loading "kmdl" plugin
Loading "downloadonly" plugin
Setting up repositories
... <snip lots out output>
--> Running transaction check
Error: Missing Dependency: python(abi) = 2.4 is needed by package
authconfig
Error: Unable to satisfy dependencies
Error: Package gnome-menus needs python-abi = 2.4, this is not available.
Error: Package subversion needs python(abi) = 2.4, this is not available.
Error: Package gnome-menus needs python(abi) = 2.4, this is not available.
Error: Package authconfig needs python(abi) = 2.4, this is not available.
Error: Package rpm-libs needs rpm = 4.4.2.1-2.fc6, this is not available.
As I understand it, F7 has python 2.5. Is there any particular reason
why these listed packages aren't being upgraded along with python?
Other things I've done: I've disabled the updates repository and that
makes things worse (more unavailable packages).
What are my options for solving this?

F8 Sound problems
by Steve Blackwell
At first, I thought I had no sound at all but If I turn the volume all the way up, I can hear muffled noises.
I found these lines in the messages file:
Nov 29 21:16:50 localhost pulseaudio[2958]: alsa-util.c: Device hw:1 doesn't support 44100 Hz, changed to 48000 Hz.
Nov 29 21:16:50 localhost pulseaudio[2958]: alsa-util.c: Cannot find mixer control "Master".
Nov 29 21:16:50 localhost pulseaudio[2958]: alsa-util.c: Cannot find mixer control "Capture".
lspci shows this:
# lspci | grep udio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 03)
01:0a.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Audigy (rev 03)
PulseAudio Volume Control shows 2 output devices at 100% volume.
Anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this?
Thanks,
Steve
PS I tried a suggestion I have seen on this list of deleting the alsa-pulsaudio-plugin package but nothing changed.

F8 vs fan on lappy Q
by Gene Heskett
I killed pcscd, but no effect. Re-installing htop first, pcscd wasn't hogging
any cpu, in fact nothing seems to be. But the fan is sure cycling like mad.
Also, I have about 25-50 copies of the console-kit-daemon running. For what
effect please?
Thanks.

sensors applet
by Bill Davidsen
Still not working for me with the 2.6.22 kernel. I believe it's
2.6.22.1-33.fc7 and the similar latest in fc6.
It works with the 2.6.2[01] kernels... just looking for feedback, the
sendors command works after rerunning sensors-find.

Evolution uses very small Fonts in F8
by Jonathan Ryshpan
I've just installed Fedora 8, and the fonts used in Evolution and some
other applications have become very small, about 8 pts. In the past
these fonts were controlled by gnome-font-properties, but this
application does not seem to exist in F8. I've tried
gnome-control-center->Appearance->Fonts, but changing a font here
doesn't seem to change anything, now even the fonts used by
gnome-control-center itself, which appear to be the same 8-point fonts
used in evolution. gnome-settings-daemon is running,
(/usr/libexec/gnome-settings-daemon to be exact), so this should be in
order. gconf-editor says that that Evolution uses 13 pt fonts, which it
doesn't.
Should an additional daemon be running? Or are some needed fonts
missing? I'm running KDE as my desktop, so its font control system may
have started to conflict with Gnome's.
Thanks - jon

streaming video metrics
by Mark Haney
We have a couple of our customers (we're a non-profit ISP) that are
looking to start offering streaming/flash video from their websites.
One of their questions has been about metrics of those videos. Are
there any tools that track that specifically, or possibly any tricks to
doing it?
I'm not a streaming video newbie, but metrics are a new thing for me.
