agpgart aperture check fails with kernels 2.6.22.4-65.fc7 and 2.6.22.5-71.fc7
by Antti J. Huhtala
Hi list,
I've just filed a bug in
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278721
to report about agpgart aperture check failure after two recent kernel
updates in my AMD Athlon 64 3000+ desktop box with ASUS K8N MB, Nvidia
nForce3 chipset and ATI Radeon 9200 PRO controller.
The problem appears in trying to restart the computer (warm boot). Then
the booting process freezes right after 'Booting the kernel.' appears on
screen. It won't go on from that point.
To be able to use the box at all I must perform a cold boot, i.e. power
the system completely off. A couple of seconds off is sufficient. When
booted after power-off, four lines of agpgart messages including
"No usable aperture found."
"Consider rebooting with iommu=memaper=2 to get a good aperture."
are printed but booting continues past the 'freeze point' and eventually
ends up in usual Gnome login screen. From then on the box runs normally.
agpgart aperture check has worked in this box through all kernels since
FC4 in June, 2005 until 2.6.22.4-65 update on 25th Aug. apgart version
is still the same 1.02 which has worked just fine for at least several
months.
A more detailed description can be read from bugzilla. If anyone on this
list has similar experience and box components, please add your comments
to the above bug. If someone knows a quick remedy, that's welcome, too.
Thank you!

PC bios confused in which harddrive to boot fedora OS: Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media!
by Excalibur Xcalibur
Hi All,
This is a rather unusual situation. I have a server running fedora
linux OS with a 650 Gb Seagate Barracuda Harddrive. Now I wanted to mirror
the server with an identical harddrive. When I plugged my new harddrive in,
I got the message:
"Reboot and select proper *boot* device or *insert boot media"
*It seems that because it's an identical harddrive (with not OS though), the
PC doesn't *see* which one is the correct boot harddrive. Weird! If a plug a
different harddisk than the one with the linux OS, they system boots up.
Any clues on how to fix this problem? *

Recommendation for Fedora server?
by Timothy Murphy
I'm planning on getting a home server,
serving httpd, ssh, mysql, dovecot, etc,
and running Fedora 7.
I'd like something using as little energy as possible,
given that I need 200-300GB in disk-space.
But I don't need a monitor (or graphics card).
Is anyone running such a system?
If so, I'd be interested to hear the hardware details.

Hard Drive data rates
by Karl Larsen
I was lead to mis-understand the data rate of my new SATA hard
drive. It indicated that the data rate was 3 GB/sec. But some checking
with Google said the Hard Drive makers are very free with their units.
To be specific a SATA drive is 3000 MegaBits/second. This boils down to
about 375 MB.
The old standard IDE parallel 40 pin plug is rated for a rate of 112
MB at the fastest to 78 GB at the slowest part of the platter. So in my
case I will not see a huge change moving to my SATA hard drive. I will
stay here on the new IDE much longer.

Why radeontool?
by Doug Wyatt
Yesterday, when I ran 'yum update' on F7 I got two packages
installed for which I can't find a reason (see yum log
excerpt below).
The two new packages are vbetool and radeontool. From
what I can find, both used to be part of pm-utils.
I really don't know about vbetool, maybe it's needed, but
radeontool is described as:
"radeontool is a hack to save some battery on an
ATI Radeon Mobility graphics chip. Radeontool can
turn off and on the backlight and external video
output."
But, my platform is a desktop, not a laptop, with a GeForce
6800 GT video card.
Using yumex, I tried uninstalling radeontool to see what
depended on it; there were nearly 200 of them and pretty
much none of those were optional. They included most of
the OpenOffice pkgs, Control-Center and system-config-*,
for example.
Can anyone explain, or even speculate, why radeontool?
Regards,
Doug Wyatt
