Specifying tmp for tar
by Dotan Cohen
I have a 2 GB bz2 archive that unzips to over 10 GB (wikipedia dump).
Although I have over 50 GB free in /home, / has only about 8 GB free.
Thus, as tar uses /tmp, the / filesystem fills up and I cannot
continue. How can I specify a tmp directory for tar in my home
directory? Note that man tar makes no mention of a tmp option.
Thanks in advance.

Where is the root password?
by potat0
I am trying to install Fedora on a pentium 5 using (F-7-i386-DVD.iso).
All works OK, but I seem to have missed the part where I get to set
the root password. My installation seems to have worked OK. I can log
on with a user I created during the installation, however, with no
root permissions. Is there a default root password that comes with
the install?
Thanks in advance.

thunderbird 2.0
by Martin Marques
I installed a month ago Fedora 7 on my new Compaq Notebook, and when
using Thunderbird found out that the search component (small box that
lets you filter mail in the selected mailbox by sender, to or cc, body
content, etc.) is missing and I can't find anywhere to enable it (if
it's still part of thunderbird).
Do I have to install it as an extension, because I search for it on
thenderbirds addons with no luck.

Re: Re-doing F7
by Robert McBroom
You can do the brute force method. The Everything DVD respin with updates requres a dul layer DVD. I don't see any duplicates in the file. Haven't picked up on how to cut things down although I don't use PAE, XEN, and such. Figuring out a package list that corresponds to some vision has probably put the unity project in a spin.

Intel 82566DC-2 problem
by Michael Semcheski
Hi everyone! I've got a computer I'm trying to install Fedora 7 on.
It has an Intel 82566DC-2 Gigabit NIC.
It is the only NIC on the computer. But, its not showing up as eth0
(or anything else, for that matter.)
I did an lscpci, and I see the NIC (that's how I know its an 82566DC-2).
# lspci | grep Gigabit
Intel 82566DC-2 Gigabit... (typing from memory)
# modprobe e1000
# lsmod | grep e1000
e1000 1117633 0 (typing from memory, the second number is 0)
# dmesg | grep e1000
# dmesg | grep eth0
Nothing in dmesg about it. I understand the situation, it see the PCI
device but e1000 doesn't think it should deal with it.
What should I do? I'm kind of stumped here.

Re: LVM or FS:EXT3?
by ke5c@hot.rr.com
> > I'm just about to install F7 onto one of my machines. I have FC6
installed and happy on one of my boxes and Mandriva on another. I'm
more used to managing FS:EXT3 or EXT2 partitions than FC6's LVM. If I
set up the new box with FS:EXT3 at the partition stage will F7 have
any problems? I have a 40Gb chunk of IDE and a 250Gb of SATA to play
with.
> I ignored LVM and went for the traditional EXT3 partitions with FC7.
Didn't have any problems with that. I've, previously, had plenty of
problems with LVM, and I need to be able to *EASILY* put drives in and
out of different boxes, in different combinations, so I don't like LVM.
I need a dual boot DOS and Linux box. Before LVM, I just installed a
Linux distro (Ubuntu or Fedora), then gparted the ext down to make
room for FreeDOS. Well, I tried that with Fe 7, and learned a lot
(but not enough) about LVM. Unless I missed something, it is very,
very hard to downsize a physical partition associated with LVM. I did
a resize2fs to shrink the filesystem. Then I did a lvreduce to reduce
the logical volume, and I ended up with the planned 3G unallocated
within the physical partition after that, but try as I might, I could
not get the physical partition to shrink. When I tried pvresize, even
though I was supposed to have 3G unallocated within the physical
partition, I kept getting an error and it refused to do the
operation. I found this "pvresize will refuse to shrink
PhysicalVolume if it has allocated extents after where its new end
would be", but as I said I supposed had unallocated extents. Finally
I just reinstalled Fe 7 with without LVM.
I had an unusual application, and I can see where LVM might be great
if you want to grow a (logical) volume to span hard drives. I can
also see for the casual user who would never rezise his/her volumes,
LVM is very transparent. Good luck!
