quicker updates - use presto
by Valent Turkovic
Hi,
how many of you use presto plugin for yum that does deltarpms
downloads and now whole rpms while updating?
How do you find it? I find it excellent! I have a fast internet
connection and I still find it really helpful - I can't imagine how is
it to update on a slow internet connections without presto.
If you look at the link:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/FeaturePresto
you can see that it will be on by default on Fedora 9 - nice :)
Valent.

Fedora 8 doesn't use my external monitor
by Gordon Hay
Laptop attached to docking station, and through that to an external
display.
Booting F8, external display behaves normally at first, but when
graphical stuff starts, it does some flickering (like a TV in need of
horizontal hold adjustment) then goes blank and stays blank. Laptop
display continues to work normally.
I'm only trying to display the same desktop simultaneously on both
displays. No split desktops or double desktops, or anything fancy.
It all worked properly with FC5, and subsequent upgrades to FC6 and then
F7. Problem appeared only on upgrade to F8. All F8 updates applied.
Everything still works normally if I boot Windows XP instead of F8.
Config is: Compaq Evo N1020v laptop with Radeon IGP 340M graphics.
External display is just an old Gateway EV500 15" CRT. Both displays
are 1024*768.
/etc/X11/xorg.conf reads:

keyspan usb serial and fc6 help
by matt pieklik
I had my keyspan USB serial adapter 19HS working with FC5, but now
that I have upgraded to FC6 it is no longer fully functional. It is
detected, and I get one way communication through it when I use
minicom. I am able to send but not receive, I determined this by
connecting two machine via serial.
Is this a problem with the USB serial adapter, or do I not have the
associated serial port configured correctly?
Here is the output from the startup:

/tmp running out of space
by Anne Wilson
/tmp is filling up rapidly. I'm guessing that it would be safe enough to
delete everything dated previous to the last bootup. Am I right?

journal commit i/o errors
by Mike Iglesias
My desktop system is a MSI K8T Master2-FAR w/2 Opteron CPUs. This system has
been running various releases of i386 Fedora (not x86_64 due to various 32 vs
64 bit issues), starting at Fedora Core 2, upgrading to FC3, FC4, FC5, FC6.
It had no real issues with any of those releases of Fedora.
During the Christmas break I did a fresh install of Fedora 8 with all the
current patches. The system ran fine for a couple of weeks on kernel
2.6.23.9-85.fc8. It then started to get this error
Message from syslogd@draco at Jan 9 08:43:51 ...
kernel: journal commit I/O error
The errors don't have any kind of pattern - the system may run for less than
24 hours or for several days before the error happens.
Figuring the hard drive may be going, I replaced it and moved the Lite-on DVD
drive to the other IDE bus, using new IDE cables for both drives. The
problems continued to happen, so I tried disconnecting the DVD drive in case
it might be causing some kind of issue that was causing the journal commit
errors. I still got the errors, so I went back to the kernel that was
installed by the F8 install, 2.6.23.1-42.fc8. The system ran for a week with
no problems with that kernel.
I've also tried the latest F8 kernel, 2.6.23.14-107.fc8, and got a journal
commit error there too (in less that 24 hours), so I'm back on the
2.6.23.1-42.fc8 kernel for now.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can track this issue down? From what I
can tell, it's either a motherboard problem or a kernel bug/issue, but there
may be something I'm overlooking that might be causing this.
Thanks,

NFS
by Raven Brooke
Hello,
I am having some difficulty getting NFS to work on my Core 7
(2.6.22.1-33.fc7) box, wondering if I have missed something obvious. I
have edited the /etc/exports file, and when I attempt to restart the nfs
demon I get the following:
[root@scully etc]# vi exports
[root@scully etc]# service nfs reload
[root@scully etc]# service nfs status
rpc.mountd is stopped
nfsd is stopped
rpc.rquotad is stopped
[root@scully etc]# service nfs start
Starting NFS services: [ OK ]
Starting NFS quotas: Cannot register service: RPC: Unable to receive;
errno = Connection refused
rpc.rquotad: unable to register (RQUOTAPROG, RQUOTAVERS, udp).
[FAILED]
Starting NFS daemon:
at which point it hangs and I have to kill the command from a new shell.
I have seen conflicting references online regarding this error, stating
that portmap must be started first, and also that portmap is deprecated in
fc7. What else should I look at?
