Kickstart Installation using Existing LVM Logical Volume
by S P Arif Sahari Wibowo
Hi!
I am working on a Fedora 8 kickstart installation that should
use existing LVM logical volume as home partition. However, it
keep failing with an error like this:
> Could not allocate requested partitions:
>
> Adding this partition would not leave enough disk space
> for already allocated logical volumes in 2008AF_data..
>
> Press 'OK' to exit the installer.
* 2008AF_data is the name of volume group
The kickstart code dealing with partition is quoted below:
clearpart --all --drives=sda
part /boot --fstype ext3 --size=128
part pv.1 --size=1536 --grow --ondisk=sda
volgroup 2008A6_work pv.1
logvol swap --fstype swap --name=2008A6_swap --vgname=2008A6_work --size=512
logvol /var --fstype ext3 --name=2008A6_var --vgname=2008A6_work --size=512
logvol / --fstype ext3 --name=2008A6_root --vgname=2008A6_work --size=3904
part pv.2 --noformat --onpart sdb1
volgroup 2008AF_data pv.2 --noformat --useexisting
logvol /home --noformat --useexisting --name=2008AF_home --vgname=2008AF_data --fstype ext3
* 2008AF_home is the name of logical volume to be reused
I already tried without --useexisting, with estimated size (not
accurate, but I added --grow), without --fstype, etc. same
error.
Any idea what's wrong?
Thanks!

Rsync
by Paul Ward
Hi Peeps,
Does anyone know if it is possible to use rsync to back up an ftp site
that uses a password.
I am aware of rsync://[USER@]HOST[:PORT]/SRC [DEST] but how do I
handle the password?
If this is not possible does it mean I have to use sftp?
Thanks in advance

installing f8/hang at 'loading ata_piix'
by John Minson
Trying to install f8 on intel core 2 duo/sata hdd/dvd writer/shuttle xpc .
The problem with the install 'hanging' at the 'loading ata_piix driver'
seems to be commonly reported but has several variants . My situation is
of the form
1) install 'stalls' at 'loading ata_piix driver' for a few minutes
2) install eventually asks from whence you want to install
3) seems the dvd drive we booted from is now 'lost'
Is there any info about what is causing this ? Is a bug or a feature ?
Will it be addressed (perhaps it has been)?
I have seen some posts about various boot options helping the situation
but nothing has worked for me yet.
My next move is to boot from usb dvd and try installing .
After that I come to installing from the network.
Any help would be appreciated

Can scp be used to update a directory?
by Anne Wilson
The scp man page is not very verbose ;-) I want to copy a directory,
recursively, over the lan, but only those files that are new or updated.
MS-DOS could do this back in ...Ummm.... so I can't believe it can't be done
in scp, but I can't see how to do it.

New FC6 Installation DVD released
by Lyvim Xaphir
Latest FC6 Respin installation DVD was released on 2007-01-19. Lots of
known FC6 bugs fixed and it uses the latest updated packages as of Jan
11th. If you have had install problems with Core 6 before, you are
encouraged to try installation with this new FC6 Respin DVD.
http://fedoraunity.org/news-archives/core-6-re-spin-20070111/
"The Fedora Unity Project is proud to announce the release of new ISO
Re-Spins of Fedora Core 6. These Re-Spin ISOs are based on Fedora Core 6
and all updates released as of January 11th, 2007. The ISO images are
available for i386 and x86_64 architectures via BitTorrent starting
Thursday, January 18th, 2007. PPC images will follow within the next 5
days, but will have had only limited testing.
This release was delayed while waiting for fixes to known issues with
Fedora Core 6[1] as well as the creation of a new tool for composing
Re-Spins. Previous releases were built with a homebrew script. This
release was built with the new tool called Pungi[2], developed by Jesse
Keating, a leading community member and Fedora Release Engineer, with
community input. This tool will be used in future official Fedora
releases and for Fedora Unity Re-Spins. We have joined in this effort to
bring a full featured tool to the Fedora community, enabling anyone to
build Re-Spins and Live-Spins now and in the future."

New kernel killed my wireless
by Mick M.
Hi List;
I finally got my wireless working
Thank you list.
That is under kernel 2.6.23.9-85.fc8.
When I did a 'yum upgrade' I got 2.6.23.14-107.fc8.
If I boot into this I lose my wireless connection.
I use network manager.
When I click the icon it sees the newtwork.
The bullet is checked and the router name 'Fedora' highlighted.
So it can see the name of the wireless router.
It asks me for the keyring password.
Then the network icon spins.
Pops up 'Fauled'
will not let me connect.
I tell it wep 128 hex and it fails.
When I reboot and change kernel I enter the keyring passsword and ir
just connects.
I don't know what would be different from kernel to kernel except the
modules.
I did an 'lsmod> file.txt' when working and when failed.

Flash card reader not working after upgrade F7 -> F8
by Przemyslaw Gawronski
Hi, after upgrading via yum from F7 to F8 my flash card stopped working.
I don't see /dev/sd[c-f] at startup and nothing after plugging in SD
card :( The led turns green after plugging so the reader itself seems to
work.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Forgot to mention 2 things:
1) "exit 0" is not good since the file is included in another script
(I think), so you end up skipping the rest of its parent (where dhcp
is started).
You should add something like
if WPA ....
fi
around all the settings via "iwconfig"
2) I had to disable ipv6 completely, otherwise my interfaces (both
wireless and cable) were not able to go up and down. They were up once
and then if-down hanged.

Good bye
by Karl Larsen
I did a temporary setup of Ubuntu and started playing with it. I
signed up for their technical list and have talked with some very smart
people. Right now I am getting my little tv camera working with Skype. I
just talked to another Ham in GA on PSK31.
These guys are not IT people for a company, they are Ubuntu users.
We get along just fine. I think the entire Fedora setup is bad. You must
like to fix your operating system to fit in. Change is the name of the
game.
Well Ubuntu has arrived. It works in ways Fedora will never
understand. Good Bye.
