Compiling Programs for F10
by Rick Bilonick
I'm trying to compile v4l-dvb for Fedora 10. Besides gcc, make, and
kernel headers, what needs to be installed? I've compiled this for
Fedora 8 and Ubuntu 8.10 without any problems. But I'm getting errors
when I try to compile for F10.

best video card for fedora 10
by Don Raikes
Hi everyone,
I have been watching this list for a while.
The ati radeon video card on my gateway desktop has failed, so I am starting to look for a new video card, and am wondering which is the best for fedora 10.
I will do most of my workin console mode ( run level 3), and some work in the gnome desktop.
I am not a gamer of any sort, and do not plan on watching many (if any dvd's) on it. I just need basic video capabilities, and don't want ot spend a ton of money.
Any suggestions appreciated.

f9 without pulseaudio.
by Reg Clemens
I keep reading comments on this list that one can remove pulseaudio
from f9 and it will run like a normal alsa system.
I have removed
alsa-plugins-pulseaudio
and libflashsupport
from my f9 system, rebooted.
Sound in Flash in Firefox works just fine, but aplay doesn't.
If aplay doesn't work I wonder about mplayer, totem, and the other sound
producing programs that I havent tested.
So, is there anything else I should be removing to get back to
'just alsa' ????
I would really like to understand what is going on here.

etc. etc. etc.
They start on Oct 12, which coincides with the last update I did (a
groupupdate of KDE from updates-testing-newkey). This is F9 on a x86_64.
I can't do far pin the segfault down to a specific page or media type. I
did a "mozilla-plugin-config -i" a couple of hours back and it hasn't
happened since, but I thought I'd mention it in case anyone else had
seen this.
I'll post a followup if it happens again.

OT: Web design applications
by Anne Wilson
I thought that a good introduction to using php would be to follow a tutorial.
However, it's designed for use with Nvu. I know that Nvu changed its name
some time ago, but can't remember its new name.
For a first attempt it would be easiest to use an interface that is closest to
what the tutorial describes. I'd expect to be able to do the same thing again
later using any other web editor, but not this first time. Can anyone point
me to either the renamed nvu or to whichever editor is closest to its
interface?
Thanks
Anne

f10: kpackagekit; authentication failed
by g
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
with new installation of f10 and get an auto notice that updates are available.
when i select 'update', 'kpackagekit' pops up showing selection for updates.
when i select 'update' again, i get a notice of 'authentication failed'.
so just what authentication is failing and how do i authenticate?
also, i would use 'yum update', but there are too many for limited disk space.
or would i be better off updating in an alphabetical order?
searching last 2 months of emails show no similar error.
suggestions? pointers? links?
tia.
peace out.

Lost audio on headphones (F9)
by Andre Costa
Hi,
my desktop computer has one of those front headphones connectors, and it
always worked (always = since Fedora8), playing the same audio that goes to
the front speakers. I tried it today and it doesn't work anymore, my guess
is that some of the recent updates might have changed something on audio
config (I know hardware is ok because system is dual-boot, and headphones
work on XP). Front speakers are working as expected.
I tried playing around with PulseAudio settings, but didn't get anywhere
I know this is a lame call for help, but I don't even know what kind of info
I should provide. Here's something that might help:
# cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xa3220000 irq 22
System is running Fedora 9 with latest updates.
Any help will be appreciated. Let me know what kind of additional info I
should provide.
Regards,
Andre

Virtualizing XP with dual boot FC10/XP
by Hal Meyer
I have FC10 and Windows dual booted on my PC and would like to
virtualize XP with KVM.
I want to be able to both boot to XP and also virtualize it in FC10
(obviously not at the same time).
When I try to install a new virtual machine the process wants to install
XP from the CD. Is there a way to just point to the XP partition on the
disk?
Vmware workstation claims to be able to do this but there seem to be
other issues with vmware and FC10.
Thanks,
Hal
