F10: new kernel breaks audio (snd-hda-intel)
by Alfredo Ferrari
Hi
I have a Dell D830, with F10 fully up-to-date. The kernel update of two
days ago (2.6.27.9-159.fc10) has broken audio on this machine.
If I reboot on the previous kernel, 2.6.27.7-134.fc10, audio works like a
charm. With the new kernel everything works with no error message, however
no sound is output, like the volume is muted or set to very low values.
I have checked all volume sliders, both for pulseaudio and alsa and all of
them are at maximum and unmuted. I am using the PAE kernel if that
matters.
The audio driver is snd-hda-intel, and the output of lspci -v reads:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)
Subsystem: Dell Device 01fe
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 21
Memory at f6ffc000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [60] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit+ Count=1/1 Enable-
Capabilities: [70] Express Root Complex Integrated Endpoint, MSI 00
Capabilities: [100] Virtual Channel <?>
Capabilities: [130] Root Complex Link <?>
Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel
Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel
Is anybody else having the same problem?
Thanks
Alfredo Ferrari

RAID5 gets a bad rap
by Philip Prindeville
I was going back over the archives and saw a lot of people complaining
about how slow RAID5 was, and did some quick research into this.
Yes, it's true that it can be slowed down if you're rewriting
fragmentary data in place, since this takes a read-modify-write operation.
But that's true of most filesystems.
If you're *not* a database weenie, and you're doing usual manly things
with your filesystem (like lots of compiles, for instance), you're
typically not going to be modifying files in place at all.
You're going to either be writing out new files, or else opening
existing files for writing, doing a truncate(fd, (off_t) 0) on them, and
then writing them out, etc.
Or else you're going to be opening lots and lots of files for reading...
Both of which RAID5 does as well as the next thing (which would be RAID0).
Why? Because if you're writing out files, you don't need to
read-modify-write, you can just write (and write the stripe parity data
at the same time).
"Ok, sure, you say, but what about the 16K (or whatever) stripe size
versus writing data out in smaller chunks?"
Yes? What about it? You might be writing blocks out via stdio
buffering in 4K chunks or whatever, but unless you're doing a sync()
after every single write (buffer flush), the filesystem (ext3 or
whatever) is free to accumulate consecutive blocks into handy (read:
more efficient) chunks (such as multiples of the stripe size) and write
them out all at once... again eliminating the need to do a
read-modify-write (since you only need to do a read-modify-write if
you're writing incomplete blocks).
So is it just the database-heads that are maligning RAID5, or are there
other performance issues I don't know about?
Because my empirical experience has always been that when writing large
files, RAID5 performs on par with RAID0.
Ditto with reading lots of files.

Network changing from eth0 to eth1
by Jim
FC8, KDE
What is changing the Network settings from eth0 to eth1 ?
Even if you go into /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and setup
as eth0, and reboot box,it will change settings to eth1.
And it is causing a unstable network.
This box only has one ethernet card in it.

fedora 10: best video card
by Don Raikes
Hi everyone,
The video card on my gateway desktop has failed, so as I shop for a new one, I am wondering what cards are best with fedora 10.
I work mostly at run leve l 3 (console), with occassions when I go into the gnome desktop.
I ddo not play any games, and as yet have not had a reason to watch any movies on my fedora system, but that may change.

iprint iphone app and F10/cups

Has anyone been able to get a decent photo print from the HP iPhone App
"iPrint"? I've got bonjour enabled for my printer and the app sees it,
but the photo doesn't fit on the page -- only a small portion of it prints.

Fedora 10 and cups remote printing failures
by Gregory P. Ennis
Everyone,
I have had an FC10 install on my personal desktop replacing an FC7
system on the same 64x computer.
Cups printing with 3 separate networks worked perfectly with Fc7, but I
am unable to print to one of the remote networks.
I have cups managing the print functions for three separate networks. My
Desktop is behind the network described below as Local. Local printing
and printing to Remote B works perfectly. I am unable to print to
Remote A although lpstat -a produces the following data :
Local lpt0 accepting requests since Tue 23 Dec
Remote A lpt10(a)DeGw.Domain.com accepting requests since Tue 23
Remote A lpt1(a)DeGw.Domain.com accepting requests since Tue 23
Remote A lpt2(a)DeGw.Domain.com accepting requests since Tue 23
Remote B lpt3 accepting requests since Tue 23 Dec
Remote A lpt4(a)DeGw.Domain.com accepting requests since Tue 23
Remote A lpt5(a)DeGw.Domain.com accepting requests since Tue 23
Remote B lpt6 accepting requests since Tue 23
Remote A lpt8(a)DeGw.Domain.com accepting requests since Tue 23
Remote A lpt9(a)DeGw.Domain.com accepting requests since Tue 23
The local network is served by a Centos 5.2 os and cups 1.2.4
Remote A network is served by a Centos 5.2 os and cups 1.2.4
Remote B network is served by a Fedora 5 os and cups 1.2.8
My Desktop Fc10 uses cups 1.3.9 and i have the /etc/cups/client.conf
file pointing to my local print server with :
ServerName Mail.Local.net
The cups servers have not changed, and worked with Fc7. now it appears
when the printer name is appeneded with the name of the cups server my
desktop Fc10 unit identifies the printer but I can not print anything to
it. In particular evolution lists all of the above printers but when
one with the @DeGw.Domain.com is picked the print tab is not
highlighted and therefore I can not print. If one of the other printers
is used either Remote B or Local it works fine.
All updates on all print servers are in place. Obviously there is
nothing to update with the FC5 unit, but it is working with Fc10. All
updates are in place on the Fc10 unit.
Any ideas?

Catch-22 : wide monitor
by Beartooth
Last time a monitor bit the dust on me, the local shops were
already carrying wide ones all but exclusively, blast them -- such
dimensions were mythical beasts when even the newest of my machines were
built.
After much tedious labor and more bitter cursing, I got Fedora
*and* the monitor (HP w2207h) to agree to a compromise. Fedora treats it
as a 1680x1050 flat panel LCD, but with a choice to *use* it in 1280x1024
mode.
And all the machines in the house but two are cheerfully running
F10 that way -- all but two, my wife's and my main one. Those are the
ones I always upgrade last -- hers because she's writing whole books on
it, and I do elaborate multiple backups before any big change; and mine
because it has a second hard drive with XP installed. (I have yet to
manage to get any of my GPSs to talk with any of my proprietary topo map
software under wine or CXO.)
Today I decided to tackle my main machine. Anaconda launches --
but before it starts asking about language, keyboard, etc, I get the
dread "signal out of range; set to 1680x1050". But it has never ever yet
let me get to the normal means of resetting the display. All I can do is
hit the reset button, and start over.
I know there is some slick trick for getting around this, which
always seems adequate when I recall or reconstruct it; but I don't recall
now.
Clue, please, someone??

fedora 10 can't get past boot menu
by Don Raikes
Hello,
I have had fedora 10 running fine for several weeks.
Over the weekend, I noticed that there was an error message displayed on the console something about a general protection error.
Everything was locked up, so I performed a hard reboot of the system. Now The system gets to the grub boot menu, but at that point, I can't do anything. The keyboard does not respond at all.
The system is configured to boot to level 3 (console) because I am a blind user and prefer to use command-line as much as possible.
System configuration:
Gateway 7200X
4 gb ram
250 gb harddrive
ati radeon 9200 video card
usb keyboard
marvel gigabit network controller.
I would prefer not ot have to re-install if possible, but so far I have no way to get logged into the system.
