Why is Firefox such a beast??
by Beartooth
I'm running Firefox under F8 and F9 on five different machines,
and it's a pain on every one of them, albeit in slightly different ways;
but the differences differ, too.
The first thing they have in common is that it takes forever to
launch -- when it does launch. The second is that it mostly doesn't. It
will try, and the little blue dots will circle for a while, and the
window list on the panel will show a mark for it -- for a while.
Sometimes one or another window will flash up and disappear, usually too
fast even to identify.
Then it will either all go away, or I'll get a lasting window
telling me it's already running but not responding. Sometimes after that
Firefox will actually launch, sometimes not.
If not, sometimes clicking the launcher again will bring it up;
sometimes it comes up double, or even with two different sessions -- and
shutting either will usually shut both. Other times it helps to do ps ax|
grep firefox, find one or several pids with question marks, kill them,
and start over.
It is consistently worse on some machines than others -- but not,
afaict, on F8 more than F9 or vice versa, nor with Ffx 2 more or less
than the other.
I try to keep it as nearly standardized as I can. The best way is
to add FEBE to any new install of Firefox, and then copy in a FEBE folder
by scp or sneakermail, and run a restore.
But I have one machine (a Dell Poweredge SC 1420, formerly the
server for a private list, and not yet fully wiped) which refuses
adamantly to read media or to do scp; so there are hardly any extensions
on its Ffx -- and it works better.
Are there extensions that Fedora will allow but not get along
with, or that don't get along with Fedora? Do I have too many? (The
latest FEBE restore tab listed 79 items.) Or what?

Updates caused problems...
by Dan Thurman
I have updated two different machines and ran
into the following problems as of yesterday
and today:
1) ASUS P5GC-MX/1333
(a) If booting latest kernel: 2.6.26.3-29.f9.i686:
- No Gui startup after udev
- mkrootdev: could not determine nfs root target
- mount: missing mount point
- setuproot: moving /dev failed (No such file or directory)
: error mounting /proc (No such file or directory)
: error mounting /sys (No such file or directory)
: error mounting /selinux (No such file or directory)
- switchroot: Mount failed
- system hangs
(b) If booting previous kernel 2.6.25.14-108.f9.i686:
+ Worked with updates prior to that of last week or so,
startup/login gui worked fine, however:
- Due to current updates (last few days):
- Startup gui fails to come up just after udev, but login
gui works.
- (yesterday) Startup reported 3 kmod warnings (files
were missing and startup was unable to force kmod builds)
but continued to login
gui.
- (today): yum updated with several new kmods, then rebooted:
+ Startup forced kmod rebuild but kmod-ndiswrapper failed
+ Startup continued and and gui login came up, but after
login:
- firefox has installed *many* language plug-ins (that
I did not choose) and *everytime* you log in, the
extensions dialog pops up - so I disabled all the
language plugins I did not need but could not un-install
them, and the annoyance stopped.
2) Intel DQ35J0
(a) New kernel in 1a worked and did not have any problems,
and it did not hang.
(b) Same as 1b above, but using the same kernel as 1a above.
FWIW,
Dan

phpMyAdmin 2.11.9.1 and 2
by Don Russell
Several days ago I received messages about package updates....
including two for phpMyAdmin:
2008-09-24 12:40:17
Name : phpMyAdmin
Product : Fedora 9
Version : 2.11.9.2
Release : 1.fc9
2008-09-24 12:43:11
Name : phpMyAdmin
Product : Fedora 9
Version : 2.11.9.1
Release : 1.fc9
Note they are three minutes apart, but out of order version-wise.
The 2.11.9.1 version is available via yum-update (and has been for a
couple of days)
The 2.11.9.2 version is not.
Did something get out-of-sync WRT updating mirrors?
I understand mirror synching can take a while, but with them being
released so close together, I'd expect them to get to the mirrors
about the same time too...
Why isn't yum seeing the latest version out there?
Thanks,

samba installed from scratch on fc9 doesn't work for me
by Massimo Maiurana
hi all, I've just joined this list :)
I'm facing a problem with a brand new installation on fedora 9.
I did a system update right after the installation, so the samba
packages are of the latest available version (3.2.0-17.fc9).
at the first run, all the tree of tdb files were created under
/var/lib/samba.
now I try to create a new user:
[root@barbara Scrivania]# smbpasswd -a barbara
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
Added user barbara.
looks like the user was created, but in the log I can see a bunch of
lines like this:
lib/account_pol.c: account_policy_get(324) account_policy_get:
tdb_fetch_uint32 failed for field $n....
...where $n is a number between 1 and 10, so basically I get ten of
those lines.
every attempt to change user's password ends with this:
[barbara@barbara ~]$ smbpasswd
Old SMB password:
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
cli_pipe_validate_current_pdu: RPC fault code
DCERPC_FAULT_OP_RNG_ERROR received from remote machine 127.0.0.1
pipe \samr fnum 0x7672!
machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the password change: Error was : NT code
0x1c010002.
Failed to change password for barbara
also, if I try to connect to the server locally from the same
machine this is what I get:
[barbara@barbara ~]$ smbclient \\\\barbara\\Ufficio -U barbara
Enter barbara's password:
Domain=[BARBARA] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.2.0-17.fc9]
tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME
it would look like the requested share is non-existent, but
unfortunately it isn't so:
[barbara@barbara ~]$ smbclient -L barbara
Enter barbara's password:
Domain=[BARBARA] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.2.0-17.fc9]
Sharename Type Comment
--------- ---- -------
Ufficio Disk Ufficio
IPC$ IPC IPC Service (Samba Server Version
3.2.0-17.fc9)
SCX-4x16_Series Printer Samsung SCX-4x16 Series
Domain=[BARBARA] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.2.0-17.fc9]
Server Comment
--------- -------
Workgroup Master
--------- -------
GRECOELEVATORI BARBARA
and indeed the shared directory exists:
[barbara@barbara ~]$ ls -l /home/barbara/Documenti
totale 4
drwxr-xr-x 28 barbara barbara 4096 1 ago 10:19 Ufficio
in the same lan there is also a win98 client, and neither it is able
to access to the public share. using "map to guest = Bad User" I'm
able at least to access the printer but not the share.
here is my smb.conf stripped from commented and empty lines:
[global]
workgroup = grecoelevatori
server string = Samba Server Version %v
lanman auth = yes
client lanman auth = yes
ntlm auth = no
client ntlmv2 auth = no
map to guest = Bad User
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
max log size = 50
security = user
passdb backend = tdbsam
load printers = yes
cups options = raw
[printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /var/spool/samba
browseable = no
guest ok = yes
writable = no
printable = yes
[Ufficio]
comment = Ufficio
path = /home/barbara/Documenti/Ufficio
public = yes
writable = yes
printable = no
browseable = yes
and here is what I see in the log when trying to access the public
share, either from localhost and from the win98 client:
[2008/08/20 15:56:44, 0] smbd/service.c:make_connection_snum(1152)
'/home/barbara/Documenti/Ufficio' does not exist or permission
denied when connecting to [Ufficio] Error was Permission denied
bug in the fedora package? in this version of samba? in me :)?
again, this does happens on an installation from scratch, do not
really know if all is fine when there are a previous installation
and an existing /var/lib/samba.
thanks in advance, and sorry for my english.

Fedora 9 update causes NetworkManager not to work wireless
by Luis Orlindo Tedeschi
I am having problems with NetworkManager and wireless network. When I
installed Fedora 9 NetworkManager was working fine and able to connect
to wireless networks. However, after I did the first update suggested by
the OS, NetworkManager stopped being able to recognize wireless
networks. I formatted and installed Fedora 9 twice to confirm the
problem. I could not however identify which update is causing this
problem. Anybody having the same problem? Thanks.

Suddenly (maybew after the latest updates) rhgb does not cause the gui
representation of boot progress. Instead I get the the individuual all
of them OK.
What could cause this to happen? This is f9.

Mailing-list Gudelines. Yes or No
by Frank Murphy
Though a newbie,
Have grown to love Fedora because of it's willing to lead with new
"technology".
Have contacted you as the User-list owners. (cc the list)
But like any organisation public\private wahtever, some guidelines are
necessary otherwise nothing gets done. In this case
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate/MailingListGuidelines
Coming from windows I understand some of the *workflow habits*
But learned.
You are possible going to lose a number of seasoned user
troubleshooters, if mailing list guidelines continue to be pushed back
in peoples faces, for attempting to do the correct thing.
Maybe once and for all decide does the list need guidelines, Yes or No?
Frank
