Yum trying to update OpenOffice 2.4 with older 2.3 version on F8
by KC8LDO
I installed OpenOffice version 2.4.1 on a Fedora 8 system. The package
installed OK. The problem is now when I do a "yum update" at the command
line as root yum tries to update the installed OpenOffice packages with the
older 2.3 versions. I did the typical "yum clean all" and the other options
to dump the metadata etc. files. I also did an rpm rebuild database too. Yum
still tries to overwrite the newer version with the older distro specific
ones.
I also updated an old Fedora Core 3 system too and it doesn't seem to have
this problem. When I do a "yum update" it doesn't try to install the old
OpenOffice files. I know this version of the distro is way out of date
however I thought that it would have performed the same as the F8 system in
regards to the rpm's.
The only difference I can see is the FC3 system isn't being updated anymore.
One interesting point I noticed is the GUI "Add/Remove Software" utility in
F8 shows that OpenOffice 2.3 is installed after I installed the 2.4.1
version. Seems like something doesn't notice the difference in the installed
rpm files or some list in a file is way out of date.
Anybody know how to fix this permanently without having to stick in any
"exclude=openoffice*" lines in the repo files or the "yum.conf" file? It
works but why do I need to do it?

cifs WinXP problem
by Michael D. Berger
Sorry to trouble you with what may be a Microsoft problem.
On my LAN, I replaced one of my Win2k boxes with a new
WinXP box. I use cifs to connect with MS boxes from an
FC7 box. Here is the main part of the start script in
init.d :
case $1 in
start)
mount -t cifs -o user=administrator%
xxx,noauto,suid,dir_mode=0700,file_mode=0700 //abcd30/base /mnt/base30
mount -t cifs -o user=administrator%
xxx,noauto,suid,dir_mode=0700,file_mode=0700 //abcd10/mike_local /mnt/
mike_local_10
abcd30 is a Win2k box.
abcd10 is the new WinXP box; mike_local is a share name on a directory.
abcd30 connects correctly; for abcd10 I get:
# smb start
mount error 5 = Input/output error
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)
The man page says little of errors. I note that: ping works fine;
the new box and its shared directory are visible from other Win
boxes; the real passwords are the same on both boxes and have no
inappropriate characters. I tried shutting down iptables and
ZoneAlarm (with WAN disconnected, of course).
Thanks for your help.
Mike.

hal-0.5.10-3.fc8 won't run
by Nataraj
After the latest updates to hal-0.5.10-3.fc8 and hal-info-20080607-2.fc8
hald won't start. I get errors shown below when I try to start it. This
is on a Fujitsu lifebook A6110 T5550 laptop.
Where can I download older updates between the release and the current
update? The update repository only has the latest update.
