Gimp Gap?
by Dan Thurman
[OFF TOPIC]: Gimp
I was reading Gimp on Gimp's website and
discovered that there was something called
Gap. It was not clear to me if this was
already built in, is a plugin, or a separate
application to be downloaded and installed.
If Gap is already built-in, how does one
invoke it?
Thanks!

Can pf be used on F9?
Would there be any advantage or disadvantage in doing so?
Thanks.

Setting gnome-terminal default size
by Jonathan Ryshpan
Is there any way to make gnome-terminal have a default size of (say)
90 wide x 30 high, rather than the system default of 80x24? I am
getting tired of setting the size every time I start the system.
Thanks - jon

grub install failed with latest F10 update
by LPM
I have Googled this problem and tried everything I can think of to fix it,
but no luck. I hope someone can help.
I have a Nvidia based motherboard, two SATA drives running with NVRaid 1.
I upgraded to F10 from F8 and used the scsi_mod.scan=sync kernel option to
get around the RAID problem, then did the mkinitrd update, then updates
including kernel 2.6.27.9-159. All was well, and I have been using and
updating since Jan 12 until today.
With today's update, I finished the updates and rebooted and got the GRUB
prompt. OK, no problem, I booted from the F10 DVD, entered rescue mode,
and ran:
chroot /mnt/sysimage
grub
grub> find /grub/grub.conf
(hd0,2)
(hd1,2) [note that it is NVRaid1, so found both drives]
grub> root (hd0,2)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
grub> setup (hd0)
checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no
checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... yes
checking if "/grub/stage2" exists... yes
checking if "/grub/e2fs_stage1_5"exists... yes
running "embed /grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)... 23 sectors are embedded
succeeded
running "install /grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+23 p (hd0,2)/grub/stage2 /grub/grub.conf"... failed
error 22t: no such partition
OK, I also tried (hd1,2), and got the same exact messages except for the substitution of (hd1)
I exited grub shell and tried grub-install /dev/sda
got: /dev/sda does not have any corresponding BIOS drive
my device.map file is:
(hd0) /dev/mapper/nvidia_adgbjghc
The device.map file is the same as it has always been, no change.
This is a Linux only machine, no dual boot. Partitions are:
/dev/mapper/nvidia_adgbjghcp1 vfat
/dev/mapper/nvidia_adgbjghcp2 ext3
/dev/mapper/nvidia_adgbjghcp3 ext3 /boot
/dev/mapper/nvidia_adgbjghcp4 extended
/dev/mapper/nvidia_adgbjghcp5 ext3 /
/dev/mapper/nvidia_adgbjghcp6 swap
I also tried booting the rescue with and without the scsi_mod.scan=sync
with no difference in the outcome. I have done this grub reinsall on
many different systems and never had this problem. Although they were not
RAID systems of any kind. I have never had to do a grub install on this
system until today. I don't know if it is related to NVRaid, RAID in
general, or something else.
Any suggestions would be appreciated, other than telling me to use Linux
software RAID. I want to get this configuration running.
Thank you in advance,
Lloyd

has K3B been abandoned?
by Fred Silsbee
K3b is a piece of work...
I have 2 CD/DVD burner drives
Plextor $120+
Sony $50
Fedora doesn't like the Plextor...I guess
after downloading F10 for 9.5 hours, I tried to burn a ISO-DVD.
The simplest operation?
I wasted 4 blanks making 3 final copies that haved been checked to be good!.
The Plextor would get an error and then hang K3B
I'd kill it with kill -9 and then the drive would be locked up and even hung the eject command.
I had to reboot to open the drive. Sometimes I have to reboot to do a second operation!
and even once the "bring things back" facility had the #$%& thing running again.
OH YES! an old error reported forever
When making an ISO DVD, the verify write facility still doesn't work
even on the Sony drive. It says "couldn't find a DVD to verify.
Make things easy: if there is an error:
(1) release the drive announcing ithat the DVD is no longer blank!
(2) eject the DVD
(3) terminate all processes and subprocesses that stay running(i.e. die and go away)
(4) work on the program some more.

I use 'docker'[1]. This tool has been the sole reason i switched back to using WindowMaker after having to compromise on using Gnome with all it's bells and whistles, for a long time.
After starting docker (and docking the app), you can start off any of the gnome-panel applets and they will appear in docker.
I prefer starting off:
pidgin -n
gnome-power-manager
network-manager
If you are a regular user of WindowMaker, you might already know about the file ~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/autostart, where you can start up network-manager on login.
(note, i am not on my laptop right now, so can't confirm the exact commandline, if you have trouble, please let me know and I'll send you my configs when I can)
HTH

Fedora 10 and UK keyboard layout
by Marcelo Garcia
Hi
During the installation of Fedora 10 I choose UK for the keyboard
layout, but I when I log in gnome is using American layout.
If I add the UK in System->Preferences->Hardware->Keyboard it seems to
not make difference. I make it the default, but again, the layout is
american.
Thanks

X with neither KDE nor Gnome
by Dave Feustel
I am experimenting with various niche window managers. I have removed
all KDE software and XFCE still runs ok. Can I also delete all of gnome
software without impacting XFCE? Usually I run only Xterm and Firefox.
Thanks.
