Pirut listing output prepends digit :
by vs
Hi list,
When looking at the output of pirut in the GUI, I see packages listed as 1:x11-rest-of-name or 30:bind-rest-of-name. What does the digit that precedes the name of the package mean?
Thanks,
-vs

desktop-effects start/stop command
by Hiisi
Dear All!
Is there a way to start and stop desktop-effects using some command?
I'm pretty happy running desktop-effects all the time except when I
want to use Blender. With desktop-effects enabled Blender 3D-window is
half-transparent and there's other artefact on panels. I run Blender
using 'LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 blender'. It's the only way to use it.
I would like to create an alias for 'blender' with something like
desktop-effects --stop | LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 blender'. Or even
write a small script that would disable effects when Blender starts
and enable them after it exits.
Suggestions?
Thanks for attention!

re: CF and Swap
by Marco Devillers
Ok, cool, last mail, thanks for all support.
I'll need a solid state replacement 1.8inch, at most 5mm high, PATA, ZIF
connector, if anandtech is right. Cheapest I found so far is 32GB, around
1000 USD. Any referal to any good reseller in Germany/the Netherlands would
be appreciated. I might go SSD.
I'll reinstall Fedora Life 11 over the trashed drive and see if I can make
it work without swap, or memory mounted swap. The smartctl monitor gives
failures everywhere, so I am pretty sure the thing is trashed.
Does CF give decent read/write speeds? I don't care a lot because otherwise
I'll just use it as a portable X-terminal at home and configure another
machine as development server.
Thanks, will let you know if it worked or the MacBook turned into flames.

version GLIBC_2.0 not defined issue
by Yu Lex
Run a personal program "Track", and get error messages like "symbol errno,
version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference".
Does anybody know to deal with this issue in Fedora 11? The
LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1 trick seems not work for me.
[root@localhost ~]# Track
Track: relocation error: Track: symbol errno, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined
in file libc.so.6 with link time reference
[root@localhost ~]# export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1
[root@localhost ~]# Track
Track: error while loading shared libraries: libdl.so.2: cannot open shared
object file: No such file or directory

NFS causing slooooow boot
by Valent Turkovic
Hi,
I'm building custom Fedora remix with some packages from RPMFusion and
updated Fedora packages. Last Live USB image I created booted really
slow (over 5 minutes). I tracked down the issue to nfs service. Even
when this ISO image is used for installing Fedora to HDD the same
issue is present.
After stopping nfs service boot time was around 30 seconds!
Did anybody else experience this issue?
Cheers.

reorganizing /home's
by Michael Hennebry
I'm dual booting F9 and F11.
There is a partition that mounts on F9:/home and on F11:/home.
I suspect that my ~/.* directories are stepping on each other.
I want to reorganize so that the to-be-former home partition
mounts on F9:/homes and on F11:/homes.
F9:/home would be a symbolic link to /homes/F9.
F11:/home would be a symbolic link to /homes/F11.
User fred would have home directories with canonical names
/homes/F9/fred and /homes/F11/fred .
Each would have a symbolic link to /homes/fred,
his old home directory.
Once upon a time, I would boot from a live CD,
reorganize the directories, and edit the fstabs.
IIRC fstabs now get rewritten at boot time.
Mere hand editing won't do the trick.
What will do the trick?
Also, is there a way to use labels instead of those awful UUIDs?
I concede their usefullness if one has
a lot of disks or a lot of turnover.
I have four disks.

xine mplayer fc11 x64
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
Trying to install mplayer I get the conflicting package:
rpm -Uvh /tmp/faad2-libs-2.7-1.fc11.x86_64.rpm
warning: /tmp/faad2-libs-2.7-1.fc11.x86_64.rpm: Header V3 RSA/SHA256

rpm -qf /usr/lib64/libfaad.so.2.0.0
libfaad2-2.7-16.fc11.x86_64
It seems that libfaad.so.2 be delivered by 2 different pacakges !
Are they the same ?
Should I just use --nodeps ?
Thank.

Grsync
by Antonio M
In F11 when I start Grsync I get
grsync
(grsync:9034): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_combo_box_append_text: assertion
`GTK_IS_LIST_STORE (combo_box->priv->model)' failed
My box is a fully updated F11 system.
In the meantime I will file also a bug: I think that Grsync is very
important for backups, so when an update is pushed out, it should be
tested: this is F11 and not rawhide ;-)
