PolicyKit - Authorizations - VNC - Add/Remove - Non-Root User
by Ron Gonzalez
I have a problem where a non root user
logging in on a VNC Server Session cannot access Add/Remove Software.
Sure, I can run yum to do what I need to do, and I've already searched
the forum threads and found the following
1. you must login to the actual console, using a non-root user to modify authorizations.
2. You must modify the perms for PackageKit
I'm having a bit of difficulty understanding what the actual steps are
and what is actually preventing me from running Add/Remove. I have
attempted to set a lot of settings in Authorizations.
For instance, I have set for
Update Packages ->>
Anyone Yes
Console Yes
Active Console Yes
The exact error message is as follows:
Package installer is running when the session is not active
These applications should be run only when on active console.
This normally indicates a bug with your remote desktop implementation.
I have also added my non-root user under Explicit Authorizations with no restrictions.
Still, when i log in to a VNC session after modifying these settings, and I still get the same error.
I also have a question related to how the authorizations take effect.
Do they take effect immediately?, OR
Do I need to restart Vncserver service OR
Do I need to restart the X server? OR something else?
Thanks again.
Ron
Im at my wits end with this thing and I have found another thread Called F10 Headless Servers with no real solution at the end. Reference : http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=197339
/* RANT ON
I can't help but think that all of this policy junk on a default
install of the Linux Operating System is akin to microsoft's
implementation of the standard unix operating philosophy of operating
as a non-root user. If we want to tighten up our security, then we
should have tools such as Policy Kit to do this, and I am assuming that
this is PolicyKit that is preventing me from running this and not some
other bug. But its ridiculous to try the linux community in the same
fashion that Microsoft treats the average household user.

How to delete a printer if cups server is down?
by Paulo Cavalcanti
Hi,
how can I delete a printer if its cups server is down?
This is specially annoying with laptops, which may
have several printers visible in system-config-printer,
but none of them will be ever used again.
I tried deleting /var/cache/cups/remote.cache,
but it is always created again, with all the unusable printers in there.
This is a Fedora 10.
Thanks.

I may have spoken too soon. Interesting issue though. By installing the
correct i386 library I was able to run the Citrix client via my web browser
- I am unable though to run the client by itself. If I run
/usr/lib/ICAClient/wfcmgr - I get this error:
*/usr/lib/ICAClient/wfcmgr: error while loading shared libraries:
libXm.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory*
So after some poking around, I found that OpenMotif is supposed to have
libXm.so.3 library. I install both i386 and x86_64 packages from
ftp://ftp.ics.com/openmotif/2.3/2.3.1/, which I got that link directly from
http://www.motifzone.net/.
I tried to run it after that and got the same error. So; I uninstalled then
reinstalled the Citrix client, but I'm still getting the same issue. I've
tried 4 different version of openmotif and I'm still getting the same error.
*openmotif-2.2.3-2.i386.rpm
openmotif-devel-2.2.3-2.i386.rpm
openmotif-2.2.4-0.1.i386.rpm
openmotif-devel-2.2.4-0.1.i386.rpm
openmotif-2.3.1-1.fc9.i386.rpm
openmotif-devel-2.3.1-1.fc9.i386.rpm
openmotif-2.3.1-1.fc9.x86_64.rpm
openmotif-devel-2.3.1-1.fc9.x86_64.rpm*
Please help me understand this library issue. Thanks.

OT: Can Reformatting A Hard Drive To ext3 Destroy All the Data On It?
by Robert L Cochran
I have a hard drive that I need to destroy the data on. What is the most
dependable way to do this? Can reformatting the drive as ext3 or ext4 or
some other filesystem effectively destroy the existing data?
Is there free software that can write zeroes or some form of nonsense to
every storage location?
Thanks

EeePC - Fedora or Ubuntu?
by Timothy Murphy
I've got rather annoyed with the Xandros on my EeePC-4G,
and am thinking of installing a different OS.
I would like to install Fedora,
as I am running Fedora or CentOS on all my other machines,
but I'm attracted by the fact that there is
a version of Ubuntu (eeebuntu)
apparently specifically for the EeePC.
I suppose there isn't an eeeFedora?
Does anyone have an argument for installing Fedora
on this very small machine?

Kernel update broke my system.
by Wendell Nichols
While I was conducting a web meeting with a number of people yesterday
my keyboard stopped working. Thats the second time its happened and I
was forced to reboot! Imagine my acute frustration that because of a
kernel update the boot loader failed and I was left with a blinking
cursor! While 10 people patiently waited on the phone I had to boot the
installer and go through the "change boot loader" part of an os
upgrade. Luckly that worked and I was back in business in about 15 minutes.
I suspect that all my raving about the stability of linux over windows
is now the source of some humor in my company and the 3 other companies
represented on the call....
The kernel update that "got me" was: kernel-2.6.27.19-170.2.35.fc10.x86_64
