Suddenly I can't play audio CDs in F11.
by Aaron Konstam
I can mount data CDs and play DVDs when inserted but when I insert an
audio CD no icon appears on the Desktop and no audio playing occurs.
I checked the previous messages on this problem and the last one said:
Dumb question, you did check the state of the option to play audio CDs
when inserted, right? Under preferences?
Well I can find no such option under System->Preferences.
Where is it or is there some other resolution of the problem. This used
to work.

F11 XKB troubles
by Beartooth
One one machine, I keep getting half a dozen popups that all
say :
Error activating XKB configuration.
It can happen under various circumstances:
- a bug in libxklavier library
- a bug in X server (xkbcomp, xmodmap utilities)
- X server with incompatible libxkbfile implementation
X server version data:
The X.Org Foundation
10601901
If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
- The result of xprop -root | grep XKB
- The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd
It doesn't say *where* to send a bug report. So I ran those
commands, and got :
[btth@Hbsk ~]$ xprop -root | grep XKB
_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = "evdev", "evdev", "us", "",
"terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "evdev", "pc105+inet", "us", "",
"terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"
[btth@Hbsk ~]$ gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd
layouts = []
options = []
model =
[btth@Hbsk ~]$ gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd
layouts = []
options = []
model =
[btth@Hbsk ~]$
None of that means anything to me.
I tried yum remove xkb, meaning to follow it with yum install
xkb, but yum didn't find it.
I tried googling, and I tried yum whatprovides. That got me to /
usr/share/X11/xkb -- but everything in the readmes is Geek to me.
When I was working, all of us in my section had lots of what we
then called macros such as type Ctrl-b, and the machine would put
"Includes bibliographical references" into the proper field. What little
I can follow seems to say that such tricks are what XKB does; but I don't
use them now, and haven't since I retired.
Should I just remove XKB? If so, how? If not that, what?

F11: I keep losing audio
by Colin Brace
Hi all,
Since upgrading from F10 to F11 several weeks ago, I have been having
recurring problems with audio, and I am having difficulty figuring out what
is going on.
To start with, when Gnome starts up, sounds works fine in all apps.
Then it dies. Not while I am using the system; during inactivity, so I don't
get any leads. The volume sliderbar, ie, Sound Preferences applet still
"sees" the audio device (in earlier times, when sound died, the Sound
Preferences no long recognized the audio device).
I try to restarting nasd, no luck.
I logout, login again, Gnome restarts, sounds works now.
Wild guess: something to do with Flash. From dmesg:
$ dmesg | grep npviewer
npviewer.bin[12200]: segfault at b6fa7030 ip 007c6ccd sp bf9cb688 error 4 in
libpthread-2.10.1.so[7bf000+16000]
npviewer.bin[20778] general protection ip:130a31c sp:bff88450 error:0 in
libflashplayer.so[f9c000+96d000]
npviewer.bin[11448] general protection ip:116b31c sp:bfc9bdf0 error:0 in
libflashplayer.so[dfd000+96d000]
Is npviewer "taking down" the audio when it segfaults?
I also see this line in dmesg, but it scarcely seems important:
hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #0. Suggest a bigger
bdl_pos_adj.
Can someone give me some ideas on how to figure out what is happening here?
Thanks.

Volume buttons on Lenovo X61S is not working in text mode
by Lars Bjørndal
Hello!
On the Lenovo X61S laptop, the volume buttons are not doing anything
useful in text mode. Could it be possible to get acpi events to adjust the
volume? How should I set up such a feature, if possible at all?

RAID 1 error question - boot problem.
by Robin Laing
Hello,
I am trying to help someone get a system to reboot after a system issue.
He is not the builder of the system and the person that knows the
system is away for a few weeks. Great timing. :)
It is Fedora 10.
Two drives, two partitions each drive which one is a mirror.
/dev/sda is partitioned as /boot and / which is mirror 1.
/dev/sdb is partitioned as swap and /
The system wouldn't restart on the reboot and came up with an error
after creating the raid arrays and then saying that it cannot find
/dev/md0. I don't have the exact error message right now.
Using an Ubuntu disk (persons personal preference) the system was booted
into a live system and using gparted the partitions were shown to be as
above with as I see it, one error.
/dev/sda1 ext3 boot
/dev/sda2 ext3 / raid
/dev/sdb1 Swap
/dev/sdb2 Unknown / raid
Running mdadm /dev/sdb2 --examine shows that the partition superblock is
showing RAID 1 and that it is clean.
As this is a critical system, it is a priority and is being used as a
virtual server.
With only the second drive installed, we tried to run fsck.ext3 on the
/dev/sda2 (normally b2) with no success. We also tried /dev/md0 as
Ubuntu has created the /dev/md0 from the single drive.
The user has not tried to boot with only the one drive in yet. He is
making a copy of the drive on a different system.
Now, the question. On booting from a mirror 1 array, if there is a
problem with the raid system, how does the boot process read the
mdadm.conf file when it is on the RAID array that needs to be created?
Is there some data that is stored in the /boot or someplace else that
has the necessary info to tell the system how to build the array?
Is it part of the /boot/grub/device.map or /boot/System.map* ?
Any suggestions to where to start?
Thank you.

The ideal mail client?
by mike cloaked
Does anybody have knowledge of an mail client has the most ideal
functionality for Fedora?
I am currently using Thunderbird as its user interface is comfortable for
me, and it has plugins to handle gpg encryption, can sync to caldav
calendars (like Yahoo) - but one big downside is that its local storage is
in mbox format which is really awful for large collections of mail.
I have used Kmail in the past which did have support for maildir format as a
big plus, and did support gpg encryption, but it never supported html mail
properly which was a big downside - and I don't know if it will sync to
caldav calendars?
Is there a single mail client that has a nice UI, can support both html mail
and maildir format, as well as syncing caldav calendars and support gog
encryption? Of course supporting multiple email accounts including imap is
essential.
Email clients have been a slight irritation for me since I never found one
that supports everything that I need in a single application.

e2fsck -y wipe all my data
by Yordanis Tornes Medina
Hi
I have a HD connected as USB device and cause for electrical problems in my home, my disk go off unexpectedly more than one time some weeks ago, a few days ago I can't mount neither of my linux partitions on that disk.
Always I get this error: org.freedesktop.DeviceKit.Disks.Error.Failed: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 32: mount: Stale NFS file handle
I run an e2fsck -y /dev/sdb6 (one of the partition) and after the command finished I mount the partition and... the partition is like a new linux partition, all my data is lost. Under Nautilus/Properties filesystem type is shown as ext3/ext4 and under Gparted filesystem is shown as ext2.
Any idea why is this? Or how can I restore all the data pre existing in that partition?
Greetings

Lost Desktop Icons in F11
by Steven F. LeBrun
When upgrading from Fedora 10 to Fedora 11 failed, I did a clean install
of Fedora 11 and restored my personal home directory including the
subdirectory .gconf from Fedora 10. I use Gnome for my desktop environment.
Everytime I reboot/login, all my desktop icons are missing. To get them
back for that session, I run gtweakui-nautilus. Deselecting the "Use
nautilus to draw desktop" and then selecting it restores my desktop icons.
Deleting (by renaming) my ~/.gconf subdirectory and rebooting results in
no changes, the desktop icons are still missing.
Is there some setting that changed between Fedora 10 and 11 that I am
not setting correctly to get my desktop to display my icons?
How do I get my desktop to display the icons without manual intervention?
