Installing F12 on Mactel
by Leon Stringer
Hi,
I've tried to install F12 on my Core 2 Duo iMac. The installation seemed
to go okay but there's no sign of Fedora when I boot. I hold down the
<Option> key and just get the MacOS partition. Is there a trick to this?
Thanks in advance,
Leon...

Critical temperature reached, shutting down
by Steve Malenfant
I have an ECS board which triggers these Critical temperature alarm and them
my system shuts down. This happens only in "yum update" but doesn't on video
playback for hours.
Jan 14 14:06:19 localhost kernel: Critical temperature reached (127 C),
shutting down.
Jan 14 14:06:19 localhost kernel: Critical temperature reached (127 C),
shutting down.
The problem I have is that the CPU temp stays about 40C when this happens
(using sensors) and can't find any temperature that goes higher in the
sensors data.
Seems like a ACPI problem but the kernel log message has no details on which
sensors is at 127 C.
Is there a way to tell the kernel to be a bit more verbose on these?
Thanks.

kernel module
by Luca
Hi all,
I created a kernel module which can be passed some command line arguments
(I tried that with insmod and it works).
Now I would like, when I start the kernel with grub, to have this module
loaded at boot time so I can pass, at boot time, a kernel boot option to it.
I mean having something like
kernel vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 initrd=linuxrc mymodule.param1="myparamvalue"
initrd ....
is it possible?
Thanks,
Luca

Where is 2.6.32?
by Konstantin Svist
How come Fedora is still on 2.6.31? Is .32 held back on purpose or are
there issues merging it?
It took less than a week for .31.9 to be pushed through... but I don't
see .32 in updates-testing and it's been almost a whole month...

Between F11 and F12, which would you choose?
by Reg Clemens
I have a half dozen machines updated to F11, and one to F12.
Im wondering if I should update the F11s to F12 or leave well enough alone.
I realize that the F11 distribution has reached a 'stable' status, and
the F12 distribution will probably take a couple more months to reach
that status, but would be interested in hearing what other users have
to say about the pair.

SMS server/gateway
by Jamie Bohr
I am looking for a SMS server software for RHEL.
The phones we use can receive email but it does not always get to the phone
in a timely manner and sometimes I get "connected refused" when trying to
send messages via email. I've looked at smstools and Googled around but
would like the forums opinion on what they have used and experiences.
Thank you for your time,

I'll try these suggestions later today. Note that I was able to disable
interrupt throttling on the on-board 82574L NICs without seeing any
rx_missed_errors.

We run "mpstat -P 5 ALL" continuously; is this sufficient resolution? I've
attached the mpstat output from the 09:30-10:30 yesterday, which is one of the
busiest hours of the day for multicast traffic.
Also, here is the top of the output from powertop. Are you running with C-STATE
enabled? It is somewhat troubling that more than half of the time is spent in
the most power-saving state (C3), but I think this is averaged across all CPUs.
PowerTOP version 1.11 (C) 2007 Intel Corporation
Cn Avg residency P-states (frequencies)
C0 (cpu running) (15.2%)

Local cache / 'repo' of updates and added RPM's
by JayLinux
I had to re-install Fedora 10 on a home desktop PC. In regard to this:
Is it possible to have a local cache/ "repository" of all
1) Updates (Critical, Security, Bug-fixes), and
2) Additional installed rpm's (that were installed through PackageKit), e.g.
Opera, Adobe Reader, etc.
so that I do not have to download all those again (800 MB + D/L)
This would be similar to the 'aptonCD' package in Ubuntu (
http://aptoncd.sourceforge.net/)
APTonCD is a tool with a graphical interface which allows you to create one

changing GDM background image on F12
by Fred Smith
Hi!
I've looked thru the forums and done some googling but I don't see an
answer THAT WORKS for this question:
How to change the default GDM background/wallpaper to some other image?
I've tried all the things listed in the forums and none of them works,
including (but not limited to) copying the image I want into
/usr/share/backgrounds/images then running this command:
gconftool-2 --direct --config-source=xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults --set --type string "/desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename" "/usr/share/backgrounds/images/Fistmaster.FullHD.0190.jpg"
having done that either log off or reboot and voila! no change at all! :(
Thanks in advance.

KDE menus slow to appear when using VNC, but OK local
by Lets Go Canes
Hi all.
I am having a problem on a laptop where the KDE "kickoff application launcher" takes several seconds to appear after it is clicked - 30 to 40 seconds would be typical. The same problem exists with the "lock screen" and "shutdown/logout" widgets that I have added to the taskbar. The problem only occurs over VNC - it does not occur when logged-in to the laptop directly.
The problem would seem to be similar to the one discussed at http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=234227 , with the following differences:
o problem occurs on a VNC display, but not on the laptop's LCD
o system uses the radeon driver, not nvidia
o system has xorg-x11-server-Xorg.i686 and xorg-x11-server-common.i686 1.7.4-1.fc12 installed (I tried 1.7.4-4, but it didn't fix the problem, and "broke" the laptop display)
Has anyone else seen anything similar, or have any suggestions?
