F13 No Sound, No CDROM, K3B broken
by John Wendel
Just installed F13 X86-64 from the KDE live CD, had a few problems.
[1] No sound - Pulse mixer shows no sound hardware. Fixed by changing
permissions on /dev/snd/*. I thought console-kit was supposed to handle
this.
[2] No cdrom - Same problem, permissions on /dev/sr0.
[3] K3B doesn't see the CD-DVD drive, wants to use HAL to detect the
CD-DVD drive. I thought HAL was gone.
Any clues would be appreciated.
Thanks,
John Wendel

qemu-kvm Trying to "Write" to a cdrom/sr0 ?? , Why?
by Jim
FC13
Selinux is in "permissive" mode
Why would qemu-kvm try to "Write" to a cdrom, instead of "Read" ?
Summary:
SELinux is preventing /usr/bin/qemu-kvm "write" access on sr0.
Detailed Description:
SELinux denied access requested by qemu-kvm. It is not expected that
this access
is required by qemu-kvm and this access may signal an intrusion attempt.
It is
also possible that the specific version or configuration of the
application is
causing it to require additional access.
Allowing Access:
You can generate a local policy module to allow this access - see FAQ
(http://docs.fedoraproject.org/selinux-faq-fc5/#id2961385) Please file a bug
report.

preupgrade isn't efficient
by Martín Marqués
I'm doing a preupgrade from F12 to F13. yesterday I stopped preupgrade
and started it again today. For my surprise preupgrade restarted
downloading the installation images, which, with my slow connection,
makes me loose more then 1/2 an hour only downloading the images.
The question is, why does it download the installation images each
time I start preupgrade again?

Help with InstallMedia repo (it just refuses to go away)
by JD
$ sudo yum -y install parted
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository:
InstallMedia. Please verify its path and try again
I edited:
sudo vi /etc/yum.repos.d/packagekit-media.repo
and set
enabled-0
It worked fine for one update session.
Next update, problem comes back again.
Why is it being clobbered with a new packagekit-media.repo ?
Is there a conf file I can edit to permanently disable this repo?

ati catalyst workaround for fedora13
by nux@li.nux.ro
Hello there,
Does anyone know if there is a workaround for running the ati fglrx
drivers on fedora 13 or how difficult it would be to port fedora 12's
xorg to f13?
For fedora 12 there is this:
http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22884
And it works (thanks Steffen Seeger for the effort!), but I'm now on
fedora 13 and laptop gets too hot with the experimental mesa drivers
(altough performance wise they are decentish).
Thanks!

F-13 printing problems -
by Bob Goodwin
I have been struggling with an attempt to print a crossword
puzzle for about an hour now.
I click on print and 20 seconds later the printer activity lamp
begins to blink, 40 seconds later it produces a copy. And that
is an improvement, up until a few minutes ago it simply refused
to print at all!
Everything happens in slow motion.
In desperation I booted as root in order to get cups to allow me
to do anything, I have never booted this computer as root
before, doing anything in cups is also very slow.
All of this worked before in F-12. The printers are network
printers on our LAN.
Another F-12 computer next to this one works normally. I just
switched that computer on and once booted I was able to print 2
copies each of 2 pages in a minutes time so the rest of the
system is working normally. The problem is peculiar to the F-13
computer.
I have gone through the troubleshooting process that pops up
numerous times over the last couple of days to no avail.
I think that in this case it might be simpler to wipe out
everything to do with printing and start over configuring with cups?
Am I the only one with this problem? Suggestions welcome?
Bob

nscd cacher problem
by JD
I am running nscd-2.12-2.i686 on F13.
my /etc/resolv.conf contains:
nameserver 127.0.0.1
followed by other nameservers from my provider.
I am using the default nscd.conf file
My email client is Thunderbird.
Every time i check for email, or send a message,
thunderbird takes it many seconds to find the ip address
of pop.gmail.com
Similarly, firefox takes it sometimes almost 60 seconds to resolve
web site ip addresses.
Mu machine is not loaded at all. I have other
machines (windows) on same subnet and are mostly quiet,
but they do not have this problem.
What do I need to do as far as configuration to make nscd a better cacher?
