dell e6500 lost fn-f8 key with 2.6.32 kernels
by Brian Millett
In the 2.6.32 kernels, I've seemed to have lost the ability to use the
fn-f8 key to togle external displays. Using xev I see that
KeyPress event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x5800001,
root 0x15a, subw 0x5800002, time 869383, (55,45), root:(93,132),
state 0x50, keycode 33 (keysym 0x70, p), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (70) "p"
XmbLookupString gives 1 bytes: (70) "p"
XFilterEvent returns: False
KeyRelease event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x5800001,
root 0x15a, subw 0x5800002, time 869531, (55,45), root:(93,132),
state 0x50, keycode 33 (keysym 0x70, p), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (70) "p"
XFilterEvent returns: False
This works just fine with the 2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.x86_64, but not
with any of the 2.6.32 kernels.
Any hints?
Thanks.

Window Management under Compiz
by Aaron Konstam
How do you get the window to be chosen when you move the cursor to it
under compiz?

There are three ways to get something done: (1) Do it yourself. (2) Hire
someone to do it for you. (3) Forbid your kids to do it.

Running Blender 2.56 on Fedora 13 and 14
by Valent Turkovic
Hi galls and guys,
I saw that there are no up to date instuctions for getting Blender
2.56 running on Fedora, not even on Blender wiki so I wrote up this
blog post:
http://bit.ly/gLQgFS or long version:
http://kernelreloaded.blog385.com/index.php/archives/blender-2-56-on-fedo...
I would like to ask you to try out these instructions and post any
feedback that you have, especially if there are some errors in
instructions.
Also if there are some Blender artists in Fedora design team please
test if all Blender functions work correctly.
I saw some Blender 2.56 packages in Koji for F15, does anybody know if
Blender 2.56 will ship with Fedora 15?
I talked with few Blender artists that I know and asked them which
version of Blender they used. They all replied that they used 2.56 and
not 2.49. They all claim that Blender 2.56 is rock solid on both OSX
and Windows, I don't know Blender artists that use Linux :(
So if Blender 2.56 turns out to be stable could it be made to replace
aging 2.45 in Fedora 14 and 15?
Cheers,
Valent.

Skype - No sound from microphone
by Kostas Sfakiotakis
I have an issue with Skype .
Although am able to hear sounds ( in a call i can hear the caller ) the
caller
can´t hear me . System wide i have sounds.
The version of Skype am using is :
skype-2.1.0.81-fc10.i586
Now the odd thing is that if i go to PulseAudio Volume Control under
Multimedia
under the Recording devices i can "see" the microphone and the system
can hear
me speaking since the volume increases and decreases accordingly .
Theoretically
at least that should mean that the microphone is actually being detected
and the
proper modules have been loaded. One last thing that might be relevant
is that i
don´t actually own a seperate microphone but it´s build in my Logitech
Web Camera.
The thing is that Skype actually knows about the Web Camera since if i
test it under
the video controls i can see my face . If i make the sound tests i can
hear the sound
if i make the test call i can hear the test person speaking but i can´t
hear my voice
. I have looked in the net but i don´t want to mess anything else ,
since everywhere
else the sound is working ( admitted it´s the playback sound and not the
recording thing
that am hearing ) . I would be glad to try even any other application
that speaks
the Skype protocol if that thing would make things easier without
messing up anything .

Strange Copy/Paste behavior in KMail 1.13.5/Kontact 4.4.8
by Steven P. Ulrick
Hello Everyone,
I am using KMail 1.13.5 from within Kontact 4.4.8. Also, I am running Fedora 13
and KDE 4.5.4. All of this is fully updated.
I don't know when this problem started, but when I copy something like this from
any email in KMail:
No. Why do you need the "full-install" DVD?
and paste it into any text editor, it comes out like this:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "DTD/xhtml1-
strict.dtd">
<body>No. Why do you need the "full-install" DVD?</body>
If I want to copy and paste a tracking number for an item that I purchased
online, it looks like this when I paste it:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "DTD/xhtml1-
strict.dtd">
<body>9101128882300487354725</body>
In the above example, this is the procedure I followed:
1. Using my mouse, I select "9101128882300487354725" in the desired email.
2. Right click the mouse, and then select "Copy"
3. Then, I either do "Ctrl V" or "Right Click | Paste"
4. The result is always the same. I get the text that I selected, plus a whole
lot HTML markup...
I have KMail set to compose and send emails in text only.
In my experiments so far, this only occurs when I copy FROM KMail. If I copy
from any other application, and paste INTO KMail, it pastes correctly. Also,
when I select and then copy "9101128882300487354725" FROM KMAIL, and then check
my clipboard, it shows up in the undesired format:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "DTD/xhtml1-
strict.dtd">
<body>9101128882300487354725</body>
As far as I know, I didn't change anything to cause this problem to occur. I do
know that up until a few weeks ago, on this same system, if (from within KMail)
I selected and copied something like "9101128882300487354725" and then pasted
the result into any application, I would get this:
"9101128882300487354725"
That is how it has always worked for me, and that is NOT how it's working for me
now :(
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Is there a better Alternative to Thunderbird ?
by Mickey
Fedora 14 / KDE
Today my Thunderbird-3.1.7 crashed and sent all my 1500 emails to the
Trash Can. Thunderbird was taking so long to compact and other
things it had to do and locking up my desktop and Web Browser.
In Fedora is there a better email Browser ?
I tried Evolution but it just does not seem to work very good in Fedora 14.

how to change nautilus' default browser?
by Mike Wright
Hi all,
Subject says it all.
I've gone through every option I could find, right clicked everything,
grepped through .nautilus and .gnome2* and haven't the slighted idea why
nautilus insists on opening Chrome when the system default is set to
Firefox.
(IMO Chrome isn't ready for prime time: the Firebug extension for it is
a joke, its UI is tedious; it may be faster at some things but its
shortcomings *way* overwhelm any of its benefits.)
Any takers?
TIA,
Mike Wright

Fedora 14: Shutdown problem
by Terry Barnaby
Hi,
About 1 in 4 times Fedora 14 hangs during shutdown on at least 4 of my systems.
Looking at the shutdown messages (ESC in the splash screen) and adding some
debug statements to /etc/rc.d/rc0.d/S01halt, it hangs after the messages:
"Unmounting file systems"
"init: Re-executing /sbin/init"
with the message:
"mount: you must specify the file system type."
Adding some debug, this appears after the following command is executed:
"fstab-decode mount -n -o ro,remount /dev/sda1 /"
The file system is ext4 on all of the systems and that command looks ok.
Any ideas ?
