Question on shredding a terebyte drive

I have a terebyte sata drive that I need to securely wipe clean. It
originally had 2 partitions. I deleted them using `fdisk', rebooted,
and then as root ran
shred -vz /dev/sdd
The drive is capable of about 60MB/sec, but shred is only "shredding"
about 25MB every 5 seconds according to its output. Since the default
number of passes is 25, this works out to about 5 days.
The `shred' process is running at 100% CPU, presumably computing
the special random patterns for erasure. Since I have 4 CPUs
would creating 4 unformatted partions on the drive and then running
something like:
shred -vz /dev/sdd1
shred -vz /dev/sdd2
shred -vz /dev/sdd3
shred -vz /dev/sdd4
in parallel cut my time? Would be just as secure?

Alpine will not show attachments

Hi,
I am running alpine-2.00-1.fc10.x86_64 on an F10 box. If I get a message with
an html or file attachment and I try to open it, I get an error that
"Firefox can't find the file at /tmp/img--46112.htm" The correct program opens
up but I always get the can't find file errors. If the message contains a URL
then it comes up and displays properly.
Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this problem?

Can't dual-boot Fedora 14 on new MacBook Pro?

Hello,
I'm trying to install Fedora (dual-boot) on a brand-new MacBook Pro.
The live/installer CD runs flawlessly on the machine, which was a nice
surprise. But after the install is completed, I cannot actually boot
into Fedora. Here is what I did:
1. OS X by default ships with an EFI partition (/dev/sda1) and an HFS+
partition (/dev/sda2). I used Boot Camp in OS X to resize the existing
OS X partition and reboot to the live CD.
2. Once the Fedora live CD is booted, I used the disk utility to
delete the "Windows" partition (/dev/sda3) that Boot Camp created.
This leaves the original EFI and OS X partitions plus a chunk (40G) of
empty space at the end of the disk.
3. Run the Fedora Installer, telling it to automatically partition and
install using the free space on the disk. It creates a 500M boot
partition (/dev/sda3) and an LVM partition (/dev/sda4).
4. When the installer gets to the part about the boot loader, I go
with the defaults, which is to install GRUB to the boot sector of the
Fedora boot partition (/dev/sda3).
After the install is complete, I would expect to be able to hold down
the Mac's "Option" key to choose which OS to boot since /dev/sda3 has
a boot sector, but only the OS X disk shows up. (What does Boot Camp
do, then, besides resizing the disk?)
I read somewhere that a boot loader called rEFIt would help, so I
tried that. I installed it using the instructions on the project's
website and rebooted. An option to boot Linux shows up in the rEFIt
boot screen, but when selecting it, I get a black screen with an error
message along the lines of "no operating system found."
Further research suggested that rEFIt had to "resync" in order to find
GRUB, even though I installed rEFIt after Fedora. I did that by going
into the rEFIt "menu" and answering in the affirmative when it told me
that a resync was necessary.
Now, when I select Linux in the rEFIt boot menu, it only shows a
gray-out penguin and nothing else happens. The lack of output makes
the problem difficult to troubleshoot exactly what's going wrong.
Maybe if I knew more about EFI, I could play around in the EFI shell
provided by rEFIt.
Anyway, has anyone here had success dual-booting Fedora 14 on a newer
Mac, and if so, what procedure did you use? I'd like to install Fedora
to the whole disk, but I'm reluctant to try that until I can get a
dual-boot scenario to work. I you could, please CC my email address in

native texlive and yum

Dear Fedora Experts,
bored of the several problems of the texlive 2010 distribution for
fedora (see my previous message about the missed hyphenation and the
1-month old broken dependency on the latex binary) I have decides to
remove it and reinstall it through tlmgr.
That has been a great idea except for a couple of issues on some
*nonrelated" packages. To remove texlive yum forced the remotion of a2ps
and R-core (and few other but these are the most important for me) and I
can't reinstall them without reinstalling texlive (at least in part).
Now I've already installed texlive but not through yum and I'm wondering
why the rpm for these packages not really related to LaTeX and in
any case working also without LaTeX can't check for the bins instead of
the whole package.
Is there a way for forcing their installation without installing
texlive?

Which Linux to use with a Mac?

All:
I am looking at installing Linux on a very old piece of hardware. I've
tried FC12/13/14 but the screen is 'messed up' and it only has 384MB of
RAM. Also, I now have a brand new, shiny MacBookPro. Any ideas on what
to install on it as far as Linux. I'm trying to stay away from the
Linux distribution that starts and ends with U as my first experience
was not pleasant. I would like to stay with the RH family, if possible.

Installation Impressions

Hello,
I'm a long term Debian and Ubuntu user and just tried to install Fedora
14. I want to share a couple of impressions:
I don't have a CD writer at hand, so I downloaded the netinstall image.
Following the instructions in the installation guide, I copied vmlinuz
and initrd.img from the .iso and bootet into it using my existing grub2
setup.
The first surprise came when the installer asked me where to install
from. I downloaded the network image, so I thought it'd be obvious that
I wanted to install from the network.
Lacking any URL or NFS server address, I figured that maybe the
installer is asking for the netinstall image itself? That'd be weird,
but seemed the most reasonable explanation.
Unfortunately, I am not able to use the downloaded disk image because
at this point the installer doesn't have LVM support. Brr.
Rebooted, copied the network image into NFS share, booted into the
installer again.
Now the installer reports that it can't mount the share. This is
obviously wrong, because if I try to specify the filename of the
netimage rather than just the directory, the installer complains that
this isn't the right file.
Grmbl. Reboot, read the documentation again. Ok, apparently I should be
able to manually enter the URL of a Fedora mirror. So I grab I piece of
paper and write down
http://mirror.cc.columbia.edu/pub/linux/fedora/releases/14/Fedora/x86_86/os/
Reboot, back into the installer. I am wondering why the hell I have to
enter this. The installer knows what I'm trying to install, and it should be
able to figure out where the closest mirror is.
Crash. I forgot that I downloaded the netboot image for i386. Why isn't
the installer warning me that install.img that it downloaded doesn't
work with the booted kernel?
Reboot, typed the correct address. Now I'm in a graphical mode that
knows LVM.
I'm warned about the installer not being able to update my existing
installation, but there is no existing Fedora installation. Well,
whatever.
Now the installer asks for the password of my LUKS encrypted swap
partition. Unfortunately the password is chosen at random on every boot.
It gives a really scary error message that it will not be able to use
this storage device which doesn't seem appropriate to me.
I chose manual partitioning. The installer asks me for the LUKS password
again and gives a scary error again. Now I'm trying to use the swap
partition for Fedora as well. I double click on it, and select "format
as swap", "encrypted". Doesn't seem to have any effect, there is no
indication that Fedora will actually use the device, and when I'm
reopening the dialog then my settings are gone.
Alright, so I'll do without swap for now. Next thing the installer
complains that I cannot put my root partition into LVM2. This works just
fine with Grub2, and isn't Fedora supposed to be cutting edge? Anyway,
so I try to create a primary /boot partition instead.
There is 128 MB of free space. I tell the installer to use all the space
that's available. It claims that there is not enough space left.
At this point I just got too annoyed. Am I just extremely unlucky or is
a Fedora installation always that painful?

I have a problem with my Sony Vaio VPCF12M1E: the internal microphone and
the external via jack doesn't work.
The volume manager, PulseAudio Contrl Panel, arecord -l .... all view the
device, but it don't work.
Must I to wait Fedora 15 with kernel 2.6.36?

Qn about rsnapshot/rsync directory filter rules

Hi everyone,
I am trying to setup my backups using rsnapshot. I have a rather large
and frequently changing /home/<user>/ that I want to backup. I don't
want to backup the frequently changing directories (e.g. my downalods
directory or temporary work directory). In other words I wanted to
rsnapshot to backup _only_ the directories/files explicitly specified
and skip everythign else.
So I created a file ~/.rsync-filter with include rules like these,
include_/.config/**
include_/dir1/**
include_/.gitconfig
include_/.gitignore
include_/.gitk
include_/dir2/**
Now say I have other files and direcotries like,
~/.oldconfig/
~/dir2_i_dont_want/
~/dir3_i_dont_want/
Calling rsync with -F works but it also backs up the other unwanted
directory and files. How do I exclude them? The problem is I can't write
explicit exclude rules as that would need to be updated every time
something new is created (as I want rsnapshot to _not_ backup anything
by default).
I tried exclude_/* at the end of the filter rules, that made rsnapshot
skip the explicitly mentioned includes like,
include_/dir1/**
include_/dir2/**
The hidden files were backed up just fine though. Any ways of doing what
I want?
