xen virtualization: xen-4.1 rpm?
by Mike Wright
Hi all,
I found about the new version here:
http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/HostConfiguration/Networking
If I understand correctly this means we will define our networks on our
host machines using standard networking tools/scripts and that from that
point on our virtuals will be able to attach their virtual interfaces to
our host's bridges and that the new xl tools are the new way forward?
If this is accurate I can't wait. ooooh ooooh ooooh
Does anybody know when we might get our hands on the new xen-4.1 rpms?
(in 1 month I have only seen 4 or 5 people on fedora's xen list so I
posted here).
Thank you

Keyboard layouts madness
by Hiisi
Hi list!
On a fresh install of F14 (x86_64) the default keyboard was "USA
international (with dead keys)". I added another two layers from
gnome-keyboard-preferences menu: one is russian and the other is USA
and then removed "USA international (with dead keys)" layer. Whenever
I logout/login again the USA international (with dead keys) is there
again and selected by default (see screenshot). How to get rid of this
dead zombie?
TIA

Problems after upgrading to F14
by JD
I upgraded from F13 to F13 using the installation DVD
downloaded from
http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/releases/14/Fedora/i386/iso/Fedora-14-i3...
The checksum was good.
I burned and booted with the DVD I burned, and I let Anaconda perform
integrity check. All went well.
I selected to upgrasde from the anaconda menu.
Upgrade went without a hitch (although, it took almost 14 hours!! to
finish).
Upon reboot (into single user mode),
I brought up the network - no problems there.
I then ran
yum -y update
And yum falls on it's face because it is unable to properly
handle dependencies.
For example it funds updates for some particular dependency,
but it is unable to resolve the problem of some other package
depending on the dependency which it is trying to upgrade to a higher
version.
So, yum gets stuck in a loop.
I have the output file saved.
I would like to attach that file, but in the past,
the listserv has dumped my message because of
an attachment.
Any suggestions?

External HDD auto-mounted as root
by Suvayu Ali
Hi everyone,
I just bought a 1TB WD Passport. It came formatted as NTFS, on plugging
it in, it auto-mounted as the regular user. But after I formatted it to
use ext4 (with gparted), it keeps getting auto-mounted as root both on
F13 and F14. Any ideas what I could do about this?

rename flash drive auto mount point
by Howard
> Is the name of your usb drive _body>< /
not quite , it's:
"_body>//
<_ht"
...with the newline.
It looks like it's been snipped from the end of an html file except for
the underscores.
I am surprised that the programmers allow this kind of naming.
I think allowing spaces in file names is wrong too.
Apparently they feel the need to "keep up with the Joneses.
I found a semi solution using mtools which I left a in a page here:
http://how0909.freeshell.org/linux/rename_flash_automount.txt
But I'm still looking for others.
I think that there is probably a udev rule or something to find and edit
which would be the right way to fix this (I guess).
Thanks for the interest.

Mounting a LUKS encrypted LVM partition manually
by Karol Babioch
Hi,
I'm new to Fedora and basically got it up and running. However I
couldn't find a solution for mounting my LUKS encrypted LVM partition
manually.
I've got a SSD and another hard drive for the storage of some media
files. The system is running on the SSD, which is an LUKS encrypted LVM
volume. This works great.
However I now want to mount another LUKS encrypted LVM (the hard drive)
automatically during the boot. This doesn't work out for me, because
basically during the boot up the following must be handled:
* Ask for the pass phrase for the SSD
* Unlock the SSD
* Run some kind of LVM hook to get the LVs active
* Mount the unlocked and activated LVs
* Read /etc/crypttab
* Mount the second hard drive
* Run the lvm hook once again
* Mount all unlocked and activated LVs according to /etc/fstab
So, can this be done with Fedora? It worked great on Arch (by running
the lvm hook twice), but I couldn't find anything similar in Fedora?
Do I have to change the initscripts, or can this be done more elegantly?
Is this something that should be considered a bug? Because right now,
when I haven't missed something, its not possible to mount a LUKS
encrypted LVM partition automatically?
Btw: Where can I find some information about the boot process in Fedora?
Couldn't find any specific to Fedora, furthermore mkinitrd seems to have
no man page?
Thanks in advance!
Best regards,
Karol Babioch

Problems with Some MP3s in Rhythmbox
by Dave Cross
I'm using Fedora 14 and I think I have the correct RPMs installed in
order for Rhythmbox to play MP3s.
$ rpm -q rhythmbox
rhythmbox-0.13.3-1.fc14.i686
$ rpm -q gstreamer-plugins-ugly
gstreamer-plugins-ugly-0.10.16-2.fc14.i686
This set up works fine for the vast majority of MP3s that I have. But
I've recently bought some MP3s from a download site which Rhythmbox
doesn't recognise. There seems to be a difference in format which the
'file' command recognises.
Here's an example of a file that works.
$ file Loose\ Change/01\ -\ The\ A\ Team.mp3
Loose Change/01 - The A Team.mp3: Audio file with ID3 version 2.3.0,
contains: MPEG ADTS, layer III, v1, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz, JntStereo
And here's an example of one that doesn't.
$ file Songs\ I\ Wrote\ With\ Amy/Songs-I-wrote-with-Amy-2010_Cold-Coffee.mp3
Songs I Wrote With Amy/Songs-I-wrote-with-Amy-2010_Cold-Coffee.mp3:
Audio file with ID3 version 2.4.0, contains:
Annoyingly the MP3s work fine on my Android phone and on a Mac. It
only seems to be the GStreamer plugin that doesn't play them. And that
means that it's unlikely that the download site will listen to any
complaints. I should also point out that some MP3s from this site work
just fine.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Are there any other
tests I can carry out to work out what the differences are?
Cheers,
Dave...

Can't get networking working in Fedora14
by Reg Clemens
I am just now bringing up Fedora14 (Ive been running Fedora11).
Something has changed, since the way I have always done things to
bring up networking just doen't work.
I can setup
/etc/sysconfig/network
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
either by hand or using the system-config-network script, and everything
LOOKS ok, but I can not ping this machine from the outside, nor can I ping
from it to another machine on the same network.
The hardware is fine, since I have Knoppix running on the machine at the
moment (to verify that the machine and its cables were ok) and its
networking came up just fine.
So, what's changed between Fedora11 and Fedora14, other than setting
up the above files (or using system-config-network) what do I need to do???
Thanks in advance.
