ecryptfs and password

Hi, I'm new to Fedora - been using Ubuntu for years. I just installed Fedora 14 to my laptop and selected to encrypt /home. When I boot, I have to enter the password for the encrypted directory. Did I set it up wrong? I didn't expect to have to enter the password at boot but instead thought the login password would be enough. Thanks! Phil

fed 15 beta + gnome 3 works nice, but ...

I posted the following mail to gnome-list(a)gnome.org. The person who replied suggested that some of my items where 'theming' issues and as such the responsibility of the distro. Can somebody 'in the know' at Fedora comment. Exploring Gnome 3 under Fedora 15 beta. So far: very nice to work with, great usability, but it could do with some more configurability options. (I am making the following remarks under the proviso that I do not know if the standard (upstream) Gnome 3 is included in Fedora 15 beta and wat Fedora has contributed to the mix). Are there any plans to increase desktop configurability in Gnome 3. For example: - I would like to be able to change the color of the top bar The lid of my laptop is a shiny black and the addition of the black colored top bar gives the desktop an even more funereal appearance (and makes the bar hard to see/read). - I would like to be able to REMOVE icons from applications overviews under 'Applications' in the 'Activities overview'. First I would like to remove ALL icons from the 'All' category. * This overview is not really necessary because the same icons are included under the other categories 'System Tools', 'Accessories', 'Graphics', etc. * Furthermore given the absurd and unhandy 16:9 laptop screens you have to scroll to see them all so having all icons available does not really save time/work. * Finding a particular icon among this plethora of icons is hardly easy. * Given the large size and the sometimes brash colors and non-uniform design of the icons makes this desktop full of large blobs not very aesthetically pleasing. Second I would like to 'prune' the icons listed under the categories retaining only the icons of the apps I use regularly (possibly putting some of these 'pruned' icons in some 'Other' category). - I would like to change the 'top bar' to an 'under bar' and have the notifications pop up at the top (and why do pop ups and notifications need to have a black background). Personally I find these 'wishes' very reasonable and not detracting from the design and usability of Gnome 3. PS Who designs/creates the icons/icon themes. I find the icons (too) big, brash, glaring and sometimes downright ugly with no consideration for the overall effect. (for example the 'Games' icons). It would be much nicer if they were created with an overall effect in mind using compatible colors and forms (say a sleek blue/silver theme, uniformly applied). PS If configuration options as specified above or comparable are planned for updates or Gnome 3.1 then I would be even more happy with Gnome 3. If not, is it possible to put forward things like the above as 'suggestions' for the design team and what is the best possible place for this. NB I can not and do not code myself. Alexander

Hi all, Anyone know of any projects / methods to install Fedora on a tablet like the iPad or an android tablet? I have an iPad and I run into things I wish I could do with it every day. I don't think it's a "distro related" issue, so i'm posting it here too: http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/11289/how-to-install-fedoraubuntu-w… what am i missing? why doesn't GRUB offer the 2 distros@boot, why is it only offering only 1?? why doesn't it sees the other one?? Wallet mysteries

Is there a one-page explanation of wallet (actually I am using KDE Wallet) anywhere? On one laptop I have to give my wallet password everytime I go to my news account at news.eternal-september.org ; on my other laptop I am not asked for this. What is the explanation? And how can I stop this request being made?

anyone running android sdk to talk to a real phone on fedora 14?

I can't figure out if this is a kernel problem or what (though I lean towards kernel since it works one way immediately after powering up the system and a different way after that). No matter how many times I plug in in after that, I'll see the same thing. On the other hand, an ancient crappy system I have with only usb 1 ports seems to work fine. It detects a communications device and creates a /dev/ttyACM0 (or something like that) as well as a storage device for the SD card. Does this sound like something I should report as a kernel bug?

Having had trouble with F15 media, I told preupgrade on an expendable (heavily backed up) pc to go to F15 beta. It did, eventually, after taking an amazingly long time -- and looks worse, so far, than I had feared. I logged in, and it put me onto what has always been my workspace #1. But there are no panels, let alone a workspace switcher; and right- clicking does nothing anywhere. I have it doing yum update at present, also going through an amazing lot of stuff. Will that enable me to orient myself? Or is this release a total loss already for all but Alpha Plus Technoids? -- Beartooth Staffwright, Neo-Redneck Not Quite Clueless Power User I have precious (very precious!) little idea where up is.

F14 scanner no longer recognised!

Until a few months ago my scanner attached to the usb port on my machine was working fine under F14. It needed a simple: Add two lines to /lib/udev/rules.d/65-libsane.rules under the Samsung Lines: # Samsung SCX-4500W ATTRS{idVendor}=="04e8", ATTRS{idProduct}=="342b", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes" and then firing up the Gimp I could scan immediately - however I have not used the scanner for a few months and today when I needed it there it is not recognised. I tried (as root): sane-find-scanner - and it gives: "found USB scanner (vendor=0x04e8 [Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.], product=0x342b [SCX-4500W Series]) at libusb:001:002" but yet: "[root@home1 ~]# scanimage -L No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different, check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages)." My original config is still as it was (I checked) - and also the /etc/sane.d/dll.conf still contains the "xerox_mfp" entry at the bottom that used to be needed. I also made selinux permissive in case that was the issue - and it was the same - Does anyone know if something has changed in F14 recently that may have been the cause of this change to scanner recognition - or a way to work around this?
