Gnome Q: Application window save-data for restore when reopened?
by Dan Thurman
I am sorry if this question was asked before,
but I was wondering why is it, that most app-
lication's main window do not restore it's
last save-data the next time it is opened?
What I am talking about is window position
and size data, but not limited to these only.
How many times does an application have to be
repositioned & resized every time it is opened?
We do have a startup session save for apps
that supports session-saves, and restores
saved apps to its last position, size, & workspace
locations. (BTW, as of F13, session-saves do not
work well.) In any case, session-saves are for
applications that will be restored when a new
session is opened. But this is a different application
for a specific purpose.
If I am not being clear, let me try to explain.
Let's take an application such as Totem.
Now if one opens Totem, one notes that this app
positions itself at the top-left corner with a rather
large window size. Annoyed, totem is repositioned,
resized for viewing pleasure. Now, I am done with
totem, I closed it. Later in time, I decided to open
Totem again, and the behaviour is exactly the same
as before, top-left and a large window size. Drat!
If there was window-app save-data, the next time
Totem opened, apps window would obtain the save-
data and reposition and resize the app is exactly as
it was the last time it was opened.
Further, is there a Gnome application design framework,
that includes built-in support for application save-data
which include things as position, size, workspace location
session-save hooks, and any window specific save-data
so that designers will automatically have this code when
developing new windows applications? (Yeah, dream on?)
It would also be nice if this was standardized, so that a
Desktop configuration tool would recognize these apps
and allow for Global & User property changes saved
either in the the global or user's (~/.config "database")
or whatever is appropriate.

Apps Virtualization with OpenSource?
by Manuel Escudero
Hi, I'm going to give you some quick context:
Last week I went to a "Startup Weekend" Event in Guadalajara, Jalisco,
(My county is Mexico) and I live in Mexico City. Usually I use Desktop
machines, in fact, I ONLY own one computer and it's a Desktop (F15 KDE 64
Bits BTW)
And it has never gave me problems before, I can pacefully work at home, at
work, at school with desktop computers as many things I use are on the cloud
and all the machines I use in my diary life have mostly the same setup
(Software,
Configs and other things, such as Fedore as the primary O.S. and Windows
VM's
inside Vbox).
BUT for this event I had to ask for a borrowed laptop as I don't have one.
The thing is
I usually work in Fedora Linux and in Windows VM inside of Fedora Linux
Because
of Dreamweaver CS5, that is my main web development production app, also I
use
Windows VM's to check's IE compatibility, and some Corel and Ulead Programs.
As a Matter of fact, I CAN'T work in a PC where I only have Windows or where
I only
have Linux, (or with dual-boot) I'm used to use both O.S. at the same time,
complementing
one with the other, Linux as the MAIN O.S and Windows in a VM...
The laptop I got only had F14 ans it wasn't powerful enough to create a VM,
Wine
won't run Dreamweaver CS5 or most of the windows tools I need to work
correctly
and I felt "inproductive" in some way at the event.
MY QUESTION IS:
As maybe I can't run a VM in all the computers that I might have access to
and because Wine Can't Emulate some programs correctly, I Know the solution
is using the cloud to carry my apps with me, I was wondering if there is a
Free Service
like XenApp:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpdUDUVMNKM
(Better if it's opensource) to run my Windows apps from the server
in my Linux Machines or if I can mount a server with free/opensource
technologies that give me that option.
I don't intend for a enterprise enviroment, something personal
where I can virtualize at much 5 apps for my personal use
in the cloud...
is it possible? What should I use?
Thanks!

Sam, you are right, I had badly misinterpreted.
Your suggested test convinced me.
I rebooted out of my backupf14 into my mainf14.
backupf14 now shows no /.autofcsk
mainf14 _does_,
completely in accord with what you said.
thanks much

I had already seen this. Nothing in there is consistent with my case.
My reboots look normal, so system should erase ./autofsck, but it doesnt.
There is no fsck activity during the boot at least none I can see.
I used, once, 'touch /forcefsck', which did do the fsck, no errors,
normal reboot.

Partitioning in anaconda
by Frode Petersen
Hi. I've searched release notes, bugzilla and news archives for an
answer to this, but haven't found one. I have found one other query on
fedoraforum, but no solution. (
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/archive/index.php/t-259666.html )
I started installing f14 on a machine (P4, 2GB ram, 30GB free on 75GB
HD, 1st partition is WinXP). I use manual setup of partitions, as I have
always done, planning to use the following approximate scheme:
sda1 - primary - ntfs - 45 GB - winXP
sda2 - primary - ext2 - 200 MB - /boot
sda5 - extended - ext4 - 7 GB - /home
sda6 - extended - swap - 2 GB - [swap]
sda7 - extended - ext4 - 20 GB - /
It seems that anaconda overrides my choice of not ticking the 'create
primary partition' box in the 'add partition' dialog, making all three
first partitions created primary. This means that both /boot and either
/home or / would be primary partitions.
Questions:
- 'Olde' knowledge says that only one primary partition can be visible
to the system at one time. Is this not longer true?
- If still true, the system wouldn't be able to see the home or root
partition, would it?
- If the behaviour is by design, what is the reasoning behind it? Is
it better than letting the admin decide?
I haven't yet tried partitioning with fdisk first, but will try to do
that tomorrow. Hopefully it will be a usable workaround.
Have a nice weekend,

/.autofsck continually updated every reboot
by Jackson Byers
[byers@f14 ~]$ uname -r
2.6.35.13-92.fc14.i686.PAE
[Background:
Re: backup copy of F14 boots, but can't login.
endless recycle of login screen: fixed by 'touch /.autorelabel, reboot'.
Still was unable to make id:3:initdefault: take effect.
Ctrl-Alt-F2 does get me to text login screen.
Also can get to runlevel 3 by appending '3' to kernel line]
Since then, I noticed I was getting a newly updated /.autofsck
every time I rebooted.
Thinking this was indicating I needed to run fsck,
I did touch /forcefcsk, rebooted, and the system did the fsck,
no errors, needed no response from me.
Still getting a newly updated /.autofsck on every reboot.
Still no effect id:3:initdefault in inittab.
Any advice re /.autofsck?
Does its continual reappearance indicate a problem?
thanks

Kicad question
by Vinny Onelli
Hi,
I just installed Kicad and I have a couple question for some one
familiar with "PCB design" I generated a new part and saved in my
user directory, but the program does not give me the option to
access any other directory other the default. The second question,
can PCB design show a picture of the part highlighted?
Thank you in advance. Vinny

My eyes! My eyes!
by Christopher Svanefalk
Dear all,
I just wanted to ask if someone has any advice to themes for Gnome2 (I
am running F14) that are reputed to be gentle on the eyes? I work very
much on the computer, and it does wear my eyes down after a while with
the standard color settings. Friend of mine is using green background
and stuff and says it helps, but I would rather find a full-blown theme
if possible.
Any tips?
Thanks in advance!

Fedora Security and the Uverse 3800HGV-B router
by JD
I am writing this message with the hope that someone on this
list has this uverse router.'
When I use Firefox to browse to this router (192.168.1.254),
it displays the "Home" machines connected to the network.
For each machine it displays:
a tv icon, it's name, and a link named "Access FIles"
and another link named "Device Details".
If I click on any machine's "Acess FIles" link, it
displays my Fedora's / directory completely.
I have no ftp daemon running.
I have no apache running.
In fact I do not have ANY internet server running.
So how in blazes is the router able to display my
entire system's files?
If I aim my browser at my own IP address,
I get
Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 192.168.1.201.
So how is the router doing it?
This is a very disconcerting security hole and I have not been
able to nail it down to any daemon running on my Fedora.
Thanks for your insights.
