Fedora hangs driving me nuts, in Windows it works without problems!
by Valent Turkovic
My work Fedora 17 64bit box gangs without reason, and I can't track
down issue causing it! When I reboot into Windows 7 32bit it works for
days without any hangs.
This is a company PC so IT installed Windows 7, but I don't use it,
that is why I installed Fedora and use it as my primary desktop.
I'm not some guru sysadmin, but I'm not a newbie, as I have been using
Linux over 10 years as my primary desktop and have few private servers
that I maintain, I have troubleshooted and fixed numerous issues with
mine and friends machines.
My desktop works perfectly for hours, sometime for days, but after
some time (usually 1-2 days) it just freezes. It doesn't matter how
many free memory I have, which apps I'm runnig or which desktop I'm
using. I tried leaving just desktop running with no apps, still
freezes, changed desktops, kde - hangs, gnome 3 - hangs, mate - gangs,
tried leaving multiple apps doing something, still hangs. I ran memory
test utils, memory is working ok. These gangs are driving me nuts!
Is anybody having unexplained hangs with Fedora 16 and 17 64bit? Could
it be some 64bit issue because Windows is 32bit and it works?
How can I troubleshoot what is causing hangs of my machine?
Thanks.

KMail trash folder?
by Alan Evans
In KMail (F17), where is the "Trash" folder? If I select a message and then
click the "Move to Trash" button, where is the message moved to? How do I
recover accidentally deleted messages?
On the sidebar, there is only "inbox," "outbox," and "sent-mail" listed
under Local Folders.

Can't get rpmbuild to work with gpg-agent
by Guido Winkelmann
Hi,
I'm trying to package some software with rpmbuild and signing the packages at
the same time. I'm following the guide found here:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/library/l-rpm3/
It mostly works - I do get properly signed RPMs at the end - however, despite
running gpg-agent, rpmbuild keeps asking for my (lengthy) GPG-passphrase every
single time it is finished with a spec-file. This can be particularly annoying
when building very large packages, because, instead of asking again, rpmbuild
will abort the entire process if I mistype the passphrase even once. If I run
rpmbuild again after that, it will build the whole package over again...
I have started gpg-agent (as a normal user) with
gpg-agent --daemon --enable-ssh-support \
--write-env-file "${HOME}/.gpg-agent-info"
I have put the following lines
if [ -f "${HOME}/.gpg-agent-info" ]; then
. "${HOME}/.gpg-agent-info"
export GPG_AGENT_INFO
export SSH_AUTH_SOCK
export SSH_AGENT_PID
fi
GPG_TTY=$(tty)
export GPG_TTY
at the end of my .bashrc, and also manually run them in my current shell. The
env command tells me it knows of the variables GPG_AGENT_INFO, SSH_AGENT_PID,
SSH_AUTH_SOCK, and GPG_TTY, with plausible looking values in all cases. When I
just run gpg-agent in my current shell with no parameters, it tells me "gpg-
agent: gpg-agent running and available". I'm running rpmbuild like this:
rpmbuild -ba --sign rpmbuild/SPECS/<specfile>
What am I still missing?

annotate pdf files - best options for use with F17?
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I am required to annotate a pdf file for proof-reading and I was
wondering what users would recommend for easy use with Fedora 17. I
looked online some and came up with xournal, PDFescape, Crocodoc: the
last two are some online resource. I tried xournal but was not
impressed.
Any suggestions?
Many thanks and best wishes,
Rannan

Disabling NetworkManager
by Alex
Hi,
How do I properly disable NetworkManager so applications don't think
my wired network is offline? I'm using a network bridge for kvm, and
it's always been easier to use the old style networking. I've run the
following commands to disable it and enable regular network services:
systemctl stop NetworkManager.service
systemctl disable NetworkManager.service
systemctl enable network.service
systemctl start network.service
My network is then functional, but Evolution and sometimes Firefox
complain the network is stopped yet still enabled. If I disable it
with systemctl entirely, Xorg crashes with the following:
Nov 28 15:14:08 sage dbus[772]: [system] Activation via systemd failed
for unit 'dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service':
Unit dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service failed to load: No
such file or directory. See system logs and 'systemctl st
atus dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service' for details.
It then produces hundreds of directories with crash info in /var/spool/abrt/.
Any ideas of how to properly disable NetworkManager so applications
don't stop working?
Thanks,
Alex

NFS4 problems -
by Bob Goodwin
I have a problem writing to one nfs4 server from this F-17/64
computer, /etc/fstab is as follows:
[bobg@box7 ~]$ cat /etc/fstab

192.168.1.48:/SRVR1 /mnt/BOX48 nfs4

Everything I can think of on the server is set "rw" Obviously I have
missed something but I can't find it, get "Read-only file system."
[root@box7 HOME1]# cp -r /mnt/BOX48/digicam/* /mnt/HOME1/digicam/

[root@box7 HOME1]# chmod 777 *
chmod: changing permissions of `bobg': Read-only file system
chmod: changing permissions of `digicam': Read-only file system
chmod: changing permissions of `lost+found': Read-only file system
I can ssh into the server, mkdir [digicam] and "touch" a test file
[footest].
$ ll /mnt/HOME1/digicam

-rw-rw-r--. 1 500 500 0 Nov 30 07:50 footest
It appears the problem is in nfs but I don't know where else to
look, I've set all the exported files to "777." Obviously I have
missed something. The other server, box48 works, it's o/s was
installed from the same flash drive
Also it will not connect server box8 at boot, I have to mount it
manually, the other one, box48, works normally, both are different
hardware but box 8 worked until I re-installed SL-6.2. I even
re-installed everything and updated again yesterday morning to no avail.
Any ideas?

[F17 KDE] Sound cutting out
by Benjamin Smith
So I have pithos installed (an excellent Pandora client that skips all
that nasty flash stuff http://kevinmehall.net/p/pithos/) and Skype.
Whenever Skype makes a sound, it cuts out all other system sounds, plays
the sound, and then the rest of the system sounds resume.
I didn't have this problem with Fedora 16 doing the same thing with the
same programs (though I'm using an updated Skype client)
Skype is set to use PulseAudio server (local) and there's no option to
change to anything else.
Pithos appears to use gstreamer though I'm not sure how that relates to
PulseAudio.
Any ideas where to go from here?
Thanks,
Benjamin Smith

dynamic ip ok for NFS/LDAP servers? Network Gurus?
by Jack Craig
Hi Folks,
The following strikes me as wrong, but i am Not guru,
so i thought to ask this forum where the wizards Do Live! :)
Pls consider a configuration with a single host providing NFS4
/home directories for other hosts in a 6 host cluster. Further,
openldap is on the same host to provide for authentication
on all 6.
the architect says its ok to configure all hosts w/DHCP,
but i see the ip changing every day or 2 (many reboots due setup).
I am a huge fan of static ip for servers, but what do i know?! :(
So, Question, is DHCP ok for the 6 hosts in this config, or go static.
More, static on server only maybe?
TIA, jackc...

Bash - an odd problem using sed or awk or for
by John Horne
Hello,
I have a bash script in which a variable is set to one or more lines of
text. What I want is to remove any lines up to and including a blank
line (or alternatively to echo all the lines after the last blank line).
There may be zero or more blank lines, and the blank lines need not be
consecutive. If there is no blank line, then all the lines should be
shown. If the last line is blank, then nothing should be shown. So for
example the variable may contain:
============ (the '=' are not part of the variable)
abc def
hijk
xyz
============
So in this case what is wanted is:
============
hijk
xyz
============
to be shown.
I tried something like:
echo "$XX" | sed -e '/./,/^$/d'
but this didn't display anything. (Where XX is the variable.)
I also tried using a 'for' loop but again this displayed nothing:
opt=""
IFS=$'\n'
for n in $XX; do test -z "$n" && opt="" || opt="$opt $n"; done
(Echoing $opt after this shows that it contains nothing.) I'm not sure
why but even using a for loop just to show it had seen a blank line
didn't work either (using something like 'test -z "$n" && echo found').
My understanding was that by setting IFS to a newline, then the 'for'
loop should see the blank line and just set '$n' to the null string. We
should then be able to test on that.
Ideally what I am looking for is a snappy one line 'sed' or 'awk'
command to handle this :-) Unfortunately at the moment I seem to be
getting nowhere though, even with the 'for' loop.
Thanks,
John.
