how to remove Gnome and leave or install KDE?
by Gary Kline
last week I tried to install the ubuntu 12.0.1-Server. I was tried
of having the new bootloader mess up my loading fedora. The CD
asked me some questions that my F-17 CD did not ask, then it said
to reboot. I did and without any load errors, it booted into
what appeared to be Ubuntu. After loading the new files and being
directed to reboot again, it loaded at fedora 17. Since then I've
had no problems with the UEFI loader.
I *did* have to get port 22 working to ssh into my desktop, and
other odds and end. Unlike ubuntu, I couldn't play a DVD movie
without adding some disallowed packages. Etc.... But for my last
trick, I want to get rid of gnome and install the kde desktop.
I have konsole installed because I hate that flashing cursor in
"terminal"... so I have several KDE libraries. What is the safe
command to remove gnome? [there are a bunch of gnome utilities I
use, but for the most part, I prefer the other desktop.
thanks for some clues!

NFS4 permissions problem -
by Bob Goodwin
On the server:
[bobg@box8 ~]$ ll /nfs4exports/data
total 12
drwxrwxrwx. 2 root root 4096 Nov 27 12:56 notecase
drwxrwxr-x. 2 1000 1000 4096 Nov 27 12:52 oocalc
drwxrwxrwx. 2 root root 4096 Nov 27 11:27 rem
The same directory from box7:
[root@box7 ~]# ll /mnt/SRVR1/notecase/
total 1032
-rwxr--r--. 1 root root 297 Nov 27 12:56 notecase.key
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 1052610 Nov 27 12:56 stuff.ncd
As a result [?] I can't write to the server
[root@box7 ~]# cp -r /home/bobg/BkU/notecase/stuff.ncd
/mnt/SRVR1/notecase/
cp: overwrite `/mnt/SRVR1/notecase/stuff.ncd'? y
cp: cannot create regular file `/mnt/SRVR1/notecase/stuff.ncd':
Permission denied
From box7 /etc/fstab - Two servers, BOX48 on the second line works,
192.168.1.8 is read only:
192.168.1.8:/nfs4exports/data/ /mnt/SRVR1 nfs4
defaults,rw,user 0 0
192.168.1.48:/SRVR1 /mnt/BOX48 nfs4
defaults,rw,user 0 0
I set up both of these recently, the first one just worked, I've
been pulling my hair out on this one!
Any suggestions welcome,
Bob

trying to add dom0_mem=512M,max:512M into /etc/grub2.cfg
by Jerome Yanga
Hi!
I would like to add "dom0_mem=512M,max:512M" into /etc/grub2.cfg.
However, I know that /etc/grub2.cfg is automatically generated via the
templates from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub. I need
to make the entry similar to below. Please guide me on how to go
about this.
title Xen 4.1.0 / pv_ops dom0 kernel 2.6.32.36
root (hd0,0)
kernel /xen-4.0.gz dom0_mem=512M,max:512M loglvl=all guest_loglvl=all
module /vmlinuz-2.6.32.36 ro root=/dev/sda2 console=hvc0
earlyprintk=xen nomodeset
module /initrd-2.6.32.36.img
Thank you in advance.

NFS4 mount problem -
by Bob Goodwin
I can't mount this nfs server:
[root@box7 ~]# mount 192.168.1.8:/home/bobg/NFSdata /mnt/SRVR1
mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting
192.168.1.8:/home/bobg/NFSdata
What are the likely problems? It's not a firewall. I've changed a few
permissions to no avail. Run out of ideas.

Is this normal for the kswapd to consume 50% of cpu?
And why would it do that?

Locate/find -
by Bob Goodwin
Is there a way/command that will find all instances of files such as
"*.ncd" on the external hard drive:
/run/media/bobg/Simple/Box8BkU/
updatedb and locate with it mounted do not find anything? Often
times it would be convenient to do but locate seems only to want to
work on the internal drives [for me].

I've never really gotten my head clear around the concept of a

get into this?
