Fedora helps with taxes :-).
by Tom Horsley
My tax software has endless lists of financial institutions
it can import data from, and none of them are ever any of
my financial institutions :-).
So over the years, I've developed the habit of downloading
the PDF tax forms so I can at least cut & paste the correct
numbers with no transcription errors.
Lo and Behold, this year everyone seems to have discovered
the wonders of protected PDF files locked against cut & paste.
Sigh... :-(.
Enter the pdf2ps and ps2pdf tools on fedora! Convert the stoopid
protected pdf to postscript then the postscript back
to pdf and the furshlugginer protected flags are gone!
Now I can cut & paste again...

Steam on Fedora
by Patrick O'Callaghan
I'm not a gamer but I thought I'd check out the Steam engine on F20.
This is on the RPMfusion nonfree repo and installed with no problems.
However when running it I get a popup error saying:
OpenGL GLX context is not using direct rendering, which may cause performance problems.
For more information visit https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9938-EYZB-7457.
A glance at the above URL reveals that the problem is probably due to
Steam being a 32-bit binary and I only have 64-bit libraries. I'm using
a GT630 video card with the NVidia proprietary driver (also from
RPMfusion).
Is this solvable without jumping through many hoops?

How do I select which monitor kdm will display login on?
by Robin Laing
Hello,
I have a dual monitor, well, one monitor and one projector that I have
configured for presentations. System is using F20.
Presently when I start the computer, kdm's login prompt is on the
projector instead of the monitor. There are no settings in the system
settings configuration to select the monitor.
The monitor order is selected for ease of use while doing the
presentations. When dragging applications to the presentation, you drag
towards the projector screen.
Even with the projector powered off, the kdm screen is on the projector.
I have played with the /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc with no success.
If I don't get this changed, some will force a move to MS Windows.
Thank you.

video shimmer
by Claude Jones
I changed KVMs today, a more modern version of my IOGear USB switch. The
three Windows machines on it look perfect. My Fedora machine has
shimmering or vibrating effects around the edges of windows, fonts, and
icons. The screen is viewable but really annoying. I'm running an NVidia
9500 card and it had been using the Nouveau driver - I tried switching
to the NVidia driver from RPMFusion but there's no improvement. My
resolution is 1920X1200 I'm using a Hanns-G monitor and it's being
correctly detected. Can anyone offer a suggestion as to other
trouble-shooting methods?

death key combo
by Mike Wright
Hi all,
f18
Just had an inexplicable (to me) event occur.
Accidentally typed "ctrl-alt-l" which caused a logout from my runlevel
5, but did NOT shut down the running processes.
I was left with 6 running VMs, a host (not a pun) of other processes and
a login prompt. Once authenticated the only thing that changed was that
the login box disappeared. (beginning to hate that blue background,
reminds of somebody else's bsod)
I can ssh in from a remote but am hosed from the local console. No
tty's available. No where to go, move along Lookie Lou.
I always wondered how to log out and leave everything running awaiting
with bated breath my eventual return. Now I know. But just how do I
get back in?
New one for me. Anybody out there that has found their way to the
center of the earth and managed to get out???
Please, insight, magic key codes, valium...

kernel-3.13.7-200.fc20.x86_64 update: wifi "No buffer space available" error.
by Rob
Hi,
My F20 PC currently has two kernels installed:
kernel-3.13.6-200.fc20.x86_64 and kernel-3.13.7-200.fc20.x86_64.
With the latest kernel my wifi connection constantly breaks, while the NetworkManager still indicates a connected wifi; this happens with two different USB wifi gadgets.
While pinging I suddenly get:
ping: sendmsg: No buffer space available.
This does not occur when I boot with kernel kernel-3.13.6-200.fc20.x86_64; wifi is then stable.
I'm afraid some bad wifi or network stuff came with the new kernel update!
(I don't know whether the cable connections are also affected; I haven't checked that).
One of the wifi's is: ID 0846:9041 NetGear, Inc. WNA1000M 802.11bgn [Realtek RTL8188CUS]
Regards,
R.L.

Linux-compatible (micro) SD card
by Geoffrey Leach
I need to acquire a micro-SD card. Having been burned by compatibility problems once already, I thought I'd ask. Is there anywhere a list of SD specs that are supported by the current kernel?
Thanks.

fedup f19->f20 not working
by Martín Marqués
I was trying out the new fedup on my workstation at home.
I did this:
1) fedup --network 20 # No errors
2) reboot
3) select System Upgrade (fedup) from grub
4) I boots f19
:(
Strange thing, on tty2 I have a prompt that says "system-upgrade:/ "
at the prompt.
I tried rebooting several times, even getting rid of grub options like quiet.
Thoughts?

Chrome keeps going crazy
by John Aldrich
I keep a half dozen tabs open in Chrome at most times, and sometimes when I
open another tab, it seems like Chrome goes crazy and the system almost hangs.
Usually I'm able to get to a console prompt and kill all Chrome sessions and
things calm down for awhile. Any idea what's going on? I'm running Fedora 20
64-bit, XFCE/KDE. I've got 4 Gigs of RAM (I know, not a whole lot, but it's
all that will fit on this motherboard.) The CPU is an Athlon X2 and I've got a
GigE to my switch and a 100 Meg link to the router.

mouse wheel doesn't scroll
by John Aldrich
I've had this problem under previous versions of Fedora and the trick then was
always to edit the XF86config file, but now that we're not USING that, how do I
get my scroll wheel back?
