How does the Host command query DNS?
by Robert Moskowitz
Fedora 20 question.
I have noticed that the Host command is always returning first IPv4
addresses, and then IPv6 addresses. So I asked on the BIND list can got
the following:
================================================
>/ Does bind order address class on queries? That is does it, say, group
/>/ IPv4 addresses then IPv6?
/
If the query is for A records the response will contain only IPv4
addresses, if the query is for AAAA records it will be IPv6. Only if the
client performs an ANY query will the response contain both. ANY records
are not generally used by applications, because they only return what's
in the resolver's cache, which may not be all the records associated
with the name; ANY queries are usually only useful when querying
authoritative servers (unless what you're trying to find out is what's
currently in the resolver's cache).
================================================
It seems that if I change the content of my zone file, I get the new
results so it does not appear to be working from cache. Is Host making
separate A then AAAA requests? Is there a way to put priority on IPv6
addresses for all applications?

Fedora 20 shutdown
by Roger
I have just Fedup'd Fedora 19 to F20 on a Dell 1520 laptop and it works
well, took about 4 hours to complete still has the same php error
message about /usr/lib64/pdo-mysql.so but all works well.
There seems to be no way to shut own the system other than going to a
terminal and entering shutdown as root.
I vaguely remember other Fedora versions had the same thing and we had
to install some app to provide the shut down menu.
What is that has to be installed to get a shut down in Fedora 20 please?
Why would a shut down or reboot menu be missing? Some folks do still
switch off for the night or while they are away. Puzzling.
TIA

Help with Fedora build system
by Geoffrey Leach
I have a request to verify a bug fix in the kerneli (id=1082266). I'm pointed to build info (http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=6790858), which lists a number of files associated with the build. I've downloaded the appropriate kernel (via yumex), but it did not install. Here's what I believe is the yumex output:
1969:4132010580f2367cca4c951775250b801c5e6515

1
installed:1969:67897106688dbad67e33538bf6498ef671b2dfc6

mbr: kernel,x86_64,0,3.13.7,100.fc19 70
repo: /kernel-3.13.7-100.fc19.x86_64
ts_state: i
output_state: 30
isDep: False
reason: user
reinstall: True
As is obvious, I'm working blind. I'd appreciate some direction here, either with the specific problem, or perhaps documentation of the process. Not with the yum install process, with which I'm quite comfortable, but with the specifics of installing a test build. Perhaps I'm just missing something that I should have installed as well?
Thanks.

F20 - Critical poweron failure, again
by Robert Moskowitz
System is doing it again, but this time I have something for
/var/log/messages.
What happened:
System was getting unstable; gnome had restarted a few times and other
things seemed to be getting off. I unplugged from my KVM and power to
use the system elsewhere and the system attempted to go into standby or
some such and hung. I physically powered off and powered on. The system
came up and I applied all updates (like 175 of them). And rebooted.
After some bunch of messages going across the screen I see the one about
disk off and sync failure and the system goes off. I tried various <s>,
<ctl-s>, <S>, <ctl-S> keystrokes through a number of boots. At one point
it froze with messages about dismounting the drives and stopping
services. Finally it seemed to not get far enough and gnome started off
and here I am. I then went right to /var/log/messages to find the time
of the last messages from the last failure start up. Perhaps someone can
tell me what is happening and how to fix this so I am not fighting the
system with each power cycle/reboot and to be afraid of rebooting (but I
often go a couple weeks between boots).
I had to trim the messages as there were too many for this list. A lot
of messages can be found at:
http://medon.htt-consult.com/~rgm/help/booterr
I just don't know of how to get them reviewed, other than opening up a
bug report, but what is the bug?

Disable whatever is cleaning /tmp
by Tucker
Hello,
Since installing FC20, I've been struggling to deal with the fact that
something is eating files in /tmp before I'm done with them. (I'm not
talking about reboots.) If I create a file in /tmp, within N minutes, it
is deleted. This is problematic since I have quite a few tools/tasks that
require creating transient files in /tmp that need to exist for the
duration of the process that creates them. I removed tmpwatch, assuming
that was the problem but that did nothing.
After some research I've found tmpfiles.d, which can't be removed because
it is wrapped in the systemd package. I attempted to disable cleaning of
/tmp and /var/tmp by making the following change to
/usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/tmp.conf but no dice:
-----------------------
# This file is part of systemd.

# under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public License as published by

# (at your option) any later version.
# See tmpfiles.d(5) for details
# Clear tmp directories separately, to make them easier to override
#d /tmp 1777 root root 10d
#d /var/tmp 1777 root root 30d
# Exclude namespace mountpoints created with PrivateTmp=yes

Can someone point me to the correct way to fix this problem?
