[FC8] ssh and CAC card???

From what I understood, the change to openssh listed in: rpm -q --changelog openssh |less as: "* Wed Jun 20 2007 Tomas Mraz <tmraz(a)redhat.com> - 4.5p1-7 - experimental NSS keys support - correctly setup context when empty level requested (#234951) " was supposed to allow the Common Access Card (CAC) to work with the shipped Fedora 8 ssh. This list's search engine not working?

Ever since I stumbled across this list, I seem to have major difficulties searching the archives. Say I want to see my posts to the list (they all have the same footer as below), I believe I could go to http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/ and enter "HaJo" as a search string. Searching in all sections, I get 0 results. Does the search engine ignore me by some reason? BTW -- I've been posting since about June, and when showing the archives sorted by author, I do find my posts. OK, not the most helpful to search for my own posts, but I do have the same issue when searching for given topics. Any other search engine out there indexing this list reliably? SATA optical drives

I'm currently running FC5, will probably upgrade to F7 in a couple of months. Unfortunately my CD/DVD rewriter appears to have died, before it's even seen a dual layer disk :'( SATA hard drives run without problems for me, but now that SATA optical drives are starting to appear in the shops, would it be OK to buy one of these and get rid of another wide ribbon cable? Is anybody already running them with Fedora? Thanks for any advice/experiences. Dave F

Changing date with procmail

Anyone know of a procmail recipe to change the date on incoming messages? If the date is in the future by more than 24 hours - I'd like to just change it to the current date. If the date is in the past by more than two weeks - I'd like to just change it to the current date. I'd like to do it in procmail - if someone knows how. I've done some searching, still have some to do. Found some stuff on extracting the date, but not on modifying it if necessary.

Hi, http://www.sysresccd.org/Download With the SystemRescueCd I backed up the /dev/sda6 partition in /mnt/backup/ naming "diskimage" After backing up operation the file has the automatic extension like "diskimage.000". Is this file ok to restore? If I name it "diskimage.gz" then it is automatically renamed with this extension "diskimage.gz.000" But here below http://www.sysresccd.org/Screenshots the file is name like this: "diskimage.pimg" Do I have to name with the .pimg extension during backup to restore correctly? And how can I restore it?

VPN options

I am planning on running a Virtual Private Network from my Fedora firewall out to a UML virtual colo (running RH9) at another site. That site will be the place I present services to the world; httpd, ssh, sftp, smtp. This is to comply with the "no servers" and dynamic ip restrictions on my Comcast connection to the net; if my firewall always drives an outbound connection to the colocation site, I am not worried about changes of ip address, and I am not opening any inbound ports. There are a number of options for the VPN - the most attractive are cipe ( http://sites.inka.de/sites/bigred/devel/cipe.html ) and FreeSwan ( http://www.freeswan.org/ ), though I am told that one can do all this through an ssh tunnel. I would rather have simple and secure than super-duper; I have plenty of bandwidth, and will send outbound http and smtp from the firewall, so the main bandwidth user will be incoming spam/b/b/b/b mail. Anyone have some experiences to share about setting up VPN? Is there anything about either cipe or FreeSwan that is likely to break with FC1 or FC2? nc missing option -z

Hi, I used to use netcat to check if a particular host is up or if I have internet connection before I run a few scripts. I would use the -z option in particular. But now I see that has been removed: $ nc -z imap.gmail.com 993 && sync-my-email.sh ncat: invalid option -- 'z' Here is the excerpt from the old manual page: -z Specifies that nc should just scan for listening daemons, without sending any data to them. It is an error to use this option in conjunction with the -l option. Any ideas what happened to it? What can I use as replacement? Thanks for any ideas. -- Suvayu Open source is the future. Ranter or evangelist?

Why is it that, when I insert an audio disk, I see it as an audio disk on my desktop, but when I click it, GNOME shows the .wav files that are present. No application is suggested, even under "Open", to play the damned music. If I go to Application, sound and video, the first option, "Audio Player", opens XMMS. Great! I click the forward button... I'm presented with a list of the... no, no, no! not the files on the CD, but the files in my home directory!!! Wow, we're really moving forward! I painfully navigate to /media, there's nothing in /media. Let's check mtab, my DVD/CD is on sr0, I believe. Nope, nothing there. Well, if the intend was to scare away Mac and Windows users, I would think that the success rate is 100%. I've been using Linux for 8 years and even "I" am scared! I do understand Fedora is for geeks, but would it make their life that difficult if things kinda worked? Didn't anybody notice that the present set-up makes absolutely no sense? At least, normally, you should go to => System, Preference, File Management, Media to select a default CD and DVD player. Still impossible! No option to change anything. I wrote about this. Nobody replied. Who's responsible for setting things this way? Is anyboby responsible somewhere or is it "We do all this together in a haphazard way" ? If so, never expect any significant market share for Linux. Radio-Canada will continue to use Windows Media because "Linux is too hard for ordinary people" (MSFT trademark). You think I'm a ranter? I've been told this quite often. But, while some people write code, I write to the Quebec Press Council. I explain that a certain so-called journalist is just a Microsoft sycophant. Every time he used Windows Vista, of course, there were a few... almost bugs. but certainly no show stopper. With Linux, the question is more complex. When a new version of Firefox comes out, for instance, instead of waiting for the upgrade, he gets the executable at Mozilla and, then, everything gets really complicated. Of course, the Press Concil understands perfectly what's going on. I made sure my basic complaint was very easy to understand: I explained the journalist NEVER discussed the appropriateness for the State -- television, amongst others -- of using proprietary format and never discussed tied sales. That's it, that's all. Still, after counceiding that the Press organisation lawyers had well understood my POV, the Council judged that the journalist gives a lot of coverage to Linux -- they didn't elabore on the kind of coverage: they can't evaluate, of course -- and, you know, given that Linux hardly has 1% of the market share, they found the coverage was adequate. So, I filed an appeal... and sent a copy to the Professional Federation of Journalists... I got my appeal. But the fight is far from over. The Press Council is heavily subsidized by the employer of said journalist, and Radio-Canada, another member of the Microsoft club. Seeing subsidies vaporize scares the shit out of those learned men: they could lose their precious jobs! So, they'll try every trick in the book to give a very mild tone to their judgement. But I have a few other tricks in my book to set the records straight, though having the support from the Linux community would certainly help. Cause... do you really believe I got any help from local coders for this fight? I got none, absolutely NONE. Why? Cause I'm a ranter. In other words, though I am not a programmer, when I see things that are not done correctly, I say so. They tell me I should fix the bugs. Why is it that there are so many programmers and I can't even set a default application for reading CD and DVDs? While I'm alone to do what I consider my job, why is it that the whole community doesn't get its act together to do such simple things? Sometimes I wished I could proselytize in a more positive way. I'd like to tell Apple users that Linux equals or surpasses OS X in user friendlyness, but it doesn't. It was like this ten years ago, it is still like this now. Countrary to what we could think from the success of Steve Jobs at the helm of Apple, in the Linux world, the only people who count are programmers. They'll fix things... soon. But Linux is not so young anymore. After 18 years, it has 1% market share. I believe there are some organizational bugs that need to be ironed out. For now, from an administrative POV, Linux is a merry-go-round that doesn't make much sense. What do you say, am I a ranter or an evangelist? Is it good for Linux to be ruled by programmers, the alternative not being necessarily the marketing department? :) Red Hat has some clout. How come they don't say "We want a music player that first detects CD files and plays them" and accept to include them on the default CD only on this condition? Etc., etc., etc.

Setting up HP laserjets (1012) to work with Fedora 11

Unrelated to topic: I lost quite a bit of messages downloading them from Altern to Thunderbird and not being able to upload afterwards* but I would like to thank Todd Zullinger for reminding me that welcome messages are not just a way for forums owner to be polite :) But somethimes, you have many things to read... * ping smtp.altern.org ping: unknown host smtp.altern.org This used to work, but not anymore, according to lantre.org. So, I'll have to set up a Gmail account. Later. ----------------------------- Setting up HP laserjets (1012) to work I discovered a bug with the setting of my printer, an HP 1012. The configuration seemed really easy as it was identified correctly on a USB Port. A few clicks, and I was done. I didn't even check to see if it worked: I never had a problem setting this printer for years. Then, I tried to print and I had a message saying that the printer wasn't connected. Weird: CUPS was installed, the wire was OK. I went back to configuration and I saw there's an option for using HAL, the Hardware Abstraction Layer. I do believe HAL has always been part of setting my printer. So, I selected it but received the message that the HPIJS driver was not available. (Note that I tried the Gutenprint driver when the printer wasn't set to use HAL: it didn't work.) I installed hpijs, now everything is fine. I don't remember ever being asked to use HAL with another distro: it was always put to contribution, I suppose. So, there must be a way around this. Most newbies will never consider an option that isn't selected by default for a printer. Most probably other printers that use HPIJS have the same problem. Those that use ppd files, probably not.

Did I really install Kmod-Nvidia ?

There are all sorts of instructions as to how to install Kmod-Nvidia on Fedora, but I thought yum would do a better job of guessing my configuration (x86_64, 9400 GT) to get the most up-to-date correct package and getting everything right. So, I just typed: yum install kmod-nvidia Now, /etc/X11/xorg.conf looks like this: # Xorg configuration created by livna-config-display Section "Files" ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia" ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules" EndSection Section "ServerFlags" Option "AIGLX" "on" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Videocard0" Driver "nvidia" Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True" EndSection Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "Enable" EndSection The file is only a few minutes old... So, I suppose it's a new config for the Kmod driver. But the process was so transparent, I can't help but wonder if all those modifications to the kernel that I read about in the doc have been made. If so, why not provide the documentation that all that is needed is to type the yum command? The Nouveau driver worked very well and, since I'm not too sure I'll install 3D, maybe I could have kept it. But my screen kept blanking once in a while for a few seconds. This happened with my previous computer too -- it had an old ATI card, the same monitor and a very standard open source driver for ATI -- but not so often and not for so long: it was just a quick blank. I thought this might fix the problem. Also, I intend to install a TV card and, it anything doesn't work, I'm sure the first suggestion from Nvidia will be to install their driver. As the material I buy is only on a one week money back guarantee, I prefer to make sure everything works in advance. Also, as it often happens when I download new packages, there was a socket error and a long (~ 1-2 min) halt before another server took over. (I forgot to save the console screen before I rebooted, but the name "liberty" was part of it.) After the installation finished, the rx/tx light of the modem began flashing very fast as if there was a download occuring... or maybe an upload if some information on the installation has to be sent back to rpmfusion or nvidia. No indication of what was going on appeared onscreen. Is this anything to be concerned about? Any idea What this transfer was about?

Hi all Fedora users, I have just joined this list. I am running the latest Fedora but I can't get my 3C900Combo networking card to work. I can see that the card is installed but no IP-address is asigned to it and I can't set it. So I think that there is a bug in that driver. Any other user out there who have a solution for this? RAGE XL Framebuffer

Hi all I know that is not a specific question about Fedora, but I can't find answer on the kernel mailing list. Is somebody having server with integrated ATI RAGE XL video card? Is it possible to patch the kernel to support this video card? If I add VGA=791 in my grub.conf, I will have a resolution of 1024x768 which is good, but the display is very slow (especially when the screen is scrolling). If I use I this: "video=aty128fb:1024x768@70" it will not work. I'm using kernel 2.4.22 but I will try 2.6.0-test11 today. If somebody has a patch, a link or anything else that can help me, it will be appreciated. Thanks for your help. Soundblaster

I have two similar PC (old Pentium but workin fine) In Pc no.1 I upgraded from RH8 to Fedora and it went fine: Soundblaster is working fine In Pc no.2 I made a fresh installation but in redhat-sound-config Fedora doesn't see any card, that was working on Redhat 9 after soundconfig... Where is the trick?? I assume that my Sounblaster is an old 16...but fine on a router/firewall. Tnx Antonio

WiFi permanently disappeared after booting test kernel

Hi, On my netbook I booted a test kernel 3.8.0-rc4+ I compiled. Now after booting back into my regular Fedora kernel 3.6.11-5.fc17.i686.PAE my wifi network device remains permanently disappeared. No wifi networks displayed in Network Manager gui. Also the Network Manager syslog messages make it look like the device has completely disappeared. Suggestions for restoring wifi welcome. F19 install and custom / RAID partitioning

Hi folks. I'm building a F19 box to replace my dead Bacula server and I'm trying to emulate as close as possible the F17 install I did then. However, this install UI is different and I've got a small probem. I've got 2 x 3TG drives sda and sdb. I've selected both drives (sda defaulted to boot device) Selected Standard Partitioning I'm in manual partitioning have done 1) + Mount point = /biosboot capacity = 1MB got this bit by googling a previous error partition put on sda1 2) + Mount point = /boot capacity = 50GB Device type = RAID /biosboot is moved to sda2 3) + Mount point = SWAP capacity = 6GB Device type = RAID /biosboot is moved to sda3 4) + Mount point = / capacity = 100GB Device type = RAID /biosboot is moved to sda4 5) + Mount point = /var/bacula capacity = blank (default to remaining space) Device type = RAID At this point I press "Update settings" to store the details for the last partition. As soon as I press the button it goes wrong and either removes some of the partitions or all of them and I get the message Storage configuration reset due to unrecoverable error. Click for details On clicking I then get the message Can't have overlapping partitions. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to sort this.

DNF Doesn't Appear to Have --skip-broken

Hi, I have an issue whereby I can't do a sudo dnf upgrade to upgrade the versions of Mysql from Oracle's Mysql repository because one of the other repositories has a package upgrade that won't be applied because it has a dependency on a gdm version that as yet doesn't exist, and, dnf appears to not have support for yum's --skip-broken parameter. Does dnf have support for this functionality so that sudo dnf upgrade will upgrade the packages I want to and ignore the packages with dependency issues? regards, Steve

I see prices are getting better on 4K monitors (samsung has one on sale for $599 at the moment), but I still find it impossible to figure out if any given video card will actually work with one :-(. Is anyone using a 4K monitor on fedora with open source video drivers and actually getting a 60HZ 3840x2160 image of a single desktop? If so, care to share which video card and monitor you use?

Brother HL-5250DN duplex printing: loves me, loves me not, ...

Greetings. I've got a brother HL-5250DN printer on my local network, and it is *currently* not doing duplex printing under Fedora 20. I've seen discussions of a similar problem in various places. The responses to the problem seem to fall into several categories: (1) Duplex printing must be *enabled* on the printer before it will print duplex. (2) Some printers are not well-supported under linux. You should check the Open Printing database (or similar). (3) Get the printer driver from Brother. Regarding (1), the duplex option *is* enabled on the printer, and it *does* print in duplex from Windows and Mac systems (and others -- see below). Regarding (2), the printer printed in duplex just fine through various versions of Fedora, up through Fedora 18 (the last version I had installed prior to Fedora 20). Furthermore, it prints duplex just fine from an Ubuntu 14.04 system that I have running in VirtualBox on my Fedora machine. In all cases the duplex printing capability happened without my having to expend any brain power at all on the issue: it "just worked". Regarding (3), I've tried that, but it didn't appear to help. So far as I can tell, my problems are pretty similar to those reported by other people. One possibly novel thing: I noticed, without paying close attention, that some of the recent updates to Fedora 20 have been CUPS-related. That motivated me to roll the dice and try duplex printing again. And shazam! It worked! If that were the end of the story, I wouldn't bother to tell it. The printer once again does *not* print duplex. I'm assuming that the problem must have been fixed by one CUPS-related upgrade and broken again by a later one. yum update took 99.99% of cpu

FC20. I ran yum -y update. After all the files were downloaded, the delta processing started. From there on, all the way through to the end of installation and cleanup, cpu was 99.99% taken up by the update process, and the entire desktop became unresponsive. I was unable to switch display windows, of which I had 6. The update had downloaded a total of 161MB, for a total of about 30 updates, most of them wine related. The machine is a dual core Intel running at 2.4GHz, with 4GB ram.

Dell Inspiron 1545 touchpad suddenly s-l-o-w

The latest updates--pushed yesterday--cause the touchpad on my Dell Inspiron 1545 to run v-e-r-y s-l-o-w. It was so bad, I tried to reinstall Fedora. At first the reinstall restored the swift movement of the touchpad pointer. But as soon as it took the updates, everything slowed down once again. When I run in Setup, the touchpad cursor moves swiftly. But not when Fedora is loaded. What a time for this to happen. I simply cannot use it for any kind of presentation in the shape it's in. What package might I possibly be able to roll back until somebody fixes the problem? Temlakos

f20 bridges not starting on boot

Hi all, f20 fully updated. Not using NetworkManager. There are an assortment of interfaces and bridges defined in my network-scripts/ifcfg files. The interfaces come up but the bridges don't. I have to manually restart networking to bring the bridges up and bind the interfaces to them. This had been working up through f18 (didn't try f19). Any ideas on how to get them to be created on boot or why they don't? Is this a candidate for a bug report? Thanks for any help, Mike Wright

Installed from the add-ons "PDF Download" It reformatted my firefox display so that it creates a right margin at least 4 Inches from the rightmost edge of the firefox window. I uninstalled it, but the malware side effect is still there. I will try to communicate with the author of this piece of unmentionable stuff.

Hi, I was trying to install mysql packages from the yum repository for Fedora 20 provided by Oracle and the fist package dnf tried to install needed to have a key loaded from the key file specified in the repository definition but crashed with the following stack trace. Has anybody else seen this? Gnome3's password entry prompt blocks access to anything else

When gnome3 application (es evolution) ask password of some account that not want to save it to keyring (Seahorse), the access to other application (es. gnome-terminal or keepass, my keyring) or other desktop is disable. I have found only this tread on this problem: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=688434 But the solution proposed at comment #33, works only partially: it is not possible to type some text on other application, only mouse work. It's possible, an how to do, disable this annoying an unintended "feature"? Printer Driver for sending a job to Kinkos

Kinkos has a printer driver for windows which allows one to select to print to a Kinkos nearby location. I was wondering if there is a Linux/Unix "kinkos" driver to add to Cups so that when one is on the road, one can print to nearest Kinkos location. I know I can email the file, or even the web link to the kinkos email address. But that requires that I know the email address of the kinkos location. Thanks for any tips/clues.

Hi, I failed to install a printer (HP deskjet 2510) on my computer that run Fedora 20. I tried to do it in this way: 1. Before I got the driver (following the instruction on the site HPLIP). I was able to complete this task, and now in the my computer exists a directory: /home/my_name/Desktop/hplip-3.14.6 (I think in this directory is istalled the driver). 2. After I tried to “ADD the PRINTER”: I did this opening the “printers dialog”, where I pushed the button “unlock” and after the button “Add New Printer”. A window appeared, and in this windows I found the printer that I would like to install (previously I used the command <# iptables -F> to reach this result - as I red on this forum). The printer that I wound install (as printer in the net) was indicated as HP-2515 on the computer //Nelly N.B. I got the driver for the printer HP DESKJET 2510 ALL-IN-ONE (not 2515). Selecting this printer I pushed the button Add. A dialog appeared where i could selected, before Helwet-Packard, and after: “Deskjet 2510 Series, hpcups 3.14.6”. At confirmation of this selection I got the message “Failed to add new printer.”. Hi, The last round of F20 updates broke mouse acceleration for the ALPS touchpad integrated into my dell latitude E6320. Moving the mouse pointer with the touchpad is super-slow, and changing the acceleration slider in xfce's mouse settings doesn''t change a thing. External USB mice work fine. How should I proceed with a bug report? I know there is some kind of voting system to flag new packages as problematic, but I don't even know which package causes the issue or how I could switch to an earlier revision (does yum allow to "rollback" an update?). LDAP login from console

I have a system that uses LDAP. Originally I set this up as a stand-alone until all my company's security issues were mitigated. The problem is that on the GDM login, it does not display the name. I have this set up on our RHEL servers but not my laptop, so I log in as a local user and ssh to the servers. I can SU (or SUDO) to the LDAP user. I do have a local user set up with the same userid and group, but a separate home directory. slightly OT: incremental backup suggestions

Hi, I have decided to also create an incremental backup on my own and was wondering what you would recommend. I did some DDG'ing around and came up with rdiff-backup. Would you recommend this? (There are some more, but this one appears to have an rpm in the fedora repositories.) Personally, I am a great fan of rsync but I also wanted a setup that would be fast because I would like to run it every hour (say). OK, I know this is OT, but it is slightly so because the system used to backup are updated F20 systems:-) Any suggestions/personal experiences/suggested tweaks/references would be greatly appreciated. Using Mate on FC20, with latest updates. Cntrl-Alt-F keys never worked from the very first login into Mate Desktop. These are the installed mate packages. Am I missing something? It my be worthwhile to note that at the login screen, Cntrl-Alt-F keys DO WORK!! how to keep firmware loaded

Hi, how do I make it so that the firmware for a particular device doesn't get unloaded when the device is no longer in use? Apparently the firmware is unloaded when the device becomes unused. At least it is loaded again when the device is used again; messages in dmesg show that the firmware is loaded again. There are no messages about unloading the firmware, so I don't know whether it is actually unloaded or not. Loading the firmware again (or unloading it) seems to cause problems with the device. So I would like to load the firmware once and keep it loaded, without any more attempts to load it once it has been loaded. -- Fedora release 20 (Heisenbug)

Install Problem with Fedora 20 (No Local Standard Disks)

Everyone, I purchased a used (refurbished) Dell Optiplex 755 that came with Windows 7 installed. I am trying to install Fedora 20, but when I get to the "Installation Destination" screen the fedora installer is not finding any "Local Standard Discs", which means I have been unable to start any installation. The system boots to Windows without any problem. I was planning on overwriting the disc and getting rid of the windows product entirely. I have checked sum the installation disc, and have even created a second Fedora 20 installation disc and have the same problem. Sure would appreciate some guidance from someone on the list that has solved a similar or same problem. Thanks, Greg Ennis

f20 - audio problem

Hi all, Exploring f20 and have a self inflicted wound. While trying to get flash to play on vlc I found a conflict between libvpx and some other libraries so the resident genius yum removed it, and all of the other packages dependent upon it, thinking they'd be easy to reinstall. Not the best idea. Now I've got all sorts of video but not a peep of audio. I yum installed alsa* and pulseaudio*. The ALSA mixer I have now looks nothing like the one here before. Pulseaudio volume control->Playback says "ALSA plug-in [plugin-container (deleted)]: ALSA Playback" but yum list reports alsa-plugins-pulseaudio-x86_64 as an installed package. I couldn't find an Audio Group. Does anybody know how to reinstall the standard f20 audio packages or where I can find a list of packages installed into a fresh f20 system (from the live xfce spin)? Netcat anomaly

I have a Fedora 20 machine which is receiving UDP broadcast packets at regular intervals on a strange high port. No program is presently listening for these packets. If I run, "tcpdump -i eth0 port 29531", I see each of the packets arriving just as I expect. Note, the packets are not empty and contain mostly ASCII characters. But if I then run, "nc -lu 29531", I don't see anything! Why not? What obvious thing am I missing? This same operation works better (but still not as I expect) on Fedora 14. NC shows one packet arriving but then doesn't show any more. Running NC under strace on both machines, I see F14 NC seems to use poll(2). It outputs one packet then hangs on poll. F20 NC seems to use select(2). It hangs on the first call. SELinux and the firewall are disabled on both machines. -- Dave Close

Installing fedora on an arm chromebook (the old one)

I had in the past followed the instructions in https://www.berrange.com/posts/2013/03/31/automated-install-of-fedora-18-ar… But I wanted to try to install fedora 20 and have a a simpler partition layout. In the process I found out a bit on how the system works. I first upgraded chrome os to get a new kernel (3.8.11) and copied the kernel partition, /lib/modules and /lib/firmware. I then got a f19 ssd image and booted from that. The usb boot being enable flag is stored in the internal flash. The flags listed in vboot_reference/firmware/lib/vboot_nvstorage.c are storred in the first 16 bytes of the disk. To clear chromeos and keep the machine booting from USB I did $ dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/mmcblk0 Create a nvram.txt file with 7000000001000000000000000000003f The 1 in the middle is the usb boot flag. $ xxd -r -p nvram.txt nvram $ dd if=nvram of=/dev/mmcblk0 I then created 2 partitions, one for the kernel and one for the root. To get the kernel to boot, I checked firmware/lib/cgptlib/include/cgptlib_internal.h and noticed that what was needed was: Correct type: sgdisk -t1:7f00 /dev/mmcblk0 Setting attribute bits 48 and 56: sgdisk -A1:set:48 /dev/mmcblk0; sgdisk -A1:set:56 /dev/mmcblk0 Repack the kernel with vbutil_kernel and point it to the new root partition. I then got the fedora20 root image, extracted the files for / and replaced /lib/modules and /lib/firmware. I tried to get X running with both the armsoc and fbdev drivers, but so far no success, which is fine for me since I use the machine as an arm devboard. Cheers, Rafael

I am at the WiFi Alliance meeting and all the room projectors have miracast as the perfered projecting method. So I go looking for miracast and fedora via google and got a few hits, mostly looking for support! one project saying that Fedora 20 is 'too old'. So is there any work for miracast support?

I don't know exactly when this happened, but today when I tried to use K3B, I get the following error: [paul@paul Desktop]$ k3b k3b: error while loading shared libraries: libproj.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory A search for libproj.so.0: reveals that it is on the system. [paul@paul Desktop]$ whereis libproj.so.0 libproj.so: /usr/lib/libproj.so.0 [paul@paul Desktop]$ Any ideas how I can fix this? I have tried reinstalling K3B and the problem persists. Many applications give unhelpful error messages, but I've never met any quite as useless as the invariable message from BackupPC: "Unable to read 4 bytes" If only it could sometimes say "Unable to read 3 bytes" or even "Hooray, was able to read 1 byte". Changing boot options through kickstart

Documentation tells me that kickstart allows an --append switch to the bootloader command to add additional text to the GRUB2 boot line. I haven't experimented with this and it is unclear to me if the change goes only into /boot/grub2/grub.cfg or if it is also put into /etc/default/grub. But adding things is not my objective. I want to delete "rhgb" and "quiet" on the boot line, preferably in both places. Is there any way to do that through kickstart or do I have to use a post-install step? -- Dave Close

Hi, According to FedEx, my new machine is on a truck speeding to my local distribution center for delivery tomorrow. So hopefully it will be here tomorrow. I had two questions: 1) It comes with Windoze 7 (with an upgrade option/disc for W8). Not sure if I want to wipe it off (ideally, I would have liked to have not paid for it) but I was wondering if I wanted to do a dual boot, is there a set of instructions somewhere that I could follow? I have had no problems with earlier windoze xp unProfessional dual installs, but not with W7 or W8 (have not even seen a machine with this one). I do wonder about keeping an OS I am likely to only use when I am talking to some technical support for some service. Somehow the ones that require contacting technical support always want you to use IE. I bluff my way through on these ones. 2) This laptop has touchscreen abilities. While I could in general care less about this feature, again I did not have an option to get rid of it. So, I wonder if it is possible to use the touchscreen features with Fedora 20? Am I better off trying CentOS on this machine because of the two questions above? I would however like to stick to Fedora. Hi, I'm trying to use SFLPhone as IAX softphone on my FC20 laptop and with my Logitech Clearchat USB headset. The output is fine and perfect, but the input is terrible (glitches, really can't hear anything. In the same environment Skype is perfect... The only difference I can see in the configs Skype using pulseaudi, but SFLPhone config looks like this: Sound manager: PulseAudio Input: alsa_input.usb_Logitech.... do you have any idea what should I change to make it work? numeric keypad craziness

Hi all, I have a bunch of Xen VMs running an assortment of Fedora versions and I connect to each of them via VNC. Each occupies an individual workspace in Domain-0. Everybody shares the keyboard and mouse. Works great. However, on one VM the 10-key part of the keyboard, when NumLock is on, doesn't work correctly. The behavior is different depending upon whether it is in single keypress mode or whether it has gone into auto-repeat mode, where it behaves correctly. The craziness starts in single key press mode where there are various behaviors depending on whether it is typing into a console, an xterm, or a GUI window, such as this Thunderbird, and whether it is an arrow key or one of the named keys (Ins, Del, Home, End, PgUp, PgDn). In all cases the named keys perform their non-NumLock action. In GUI apps and the consoles the arrow keys perform their arrow action but in an xterm the arrow keys type a letter: 8->A, 2->B, 6->C, 4->D. This survives reboots (the whole system) and restarts (just this VM). For the record, each VM keyboard is set to Generic 105 key international layout and the NumLock key is on. I know almost nothing about how the keyboard subsystem works. Anybody have any idea where to go from here? Thanks, Mike Wright

I had to remove a few ancient lines in my .profile (I am a user of the old ksh) for changing a couple of keys using a xmodmap. To wit: # xmodmap -e "keycode 22 = BackSpace" # xmodmap -e "keycode 107 = Delete" # xmodmap ~/.xmodmap As you can see I commented out those lines and I regained the funcitonality I wanted. Those keycodes were for an external keyboard that died recently, and so keymaps of the internal KB of the DELL laptop were probably getting clobbered in an unexpected way. The xmodmap codes have been obviated by the settings of the gnome-terminal's Edit -> Profile settings. Thanx to all who tried to help.

Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card for Dell Inspiron 1545: How to Drive It!

Everyone: I have a three-year-old Dell Inspiron 1545. It came with the Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card. The current output of lspci -k |grep -iA5 wire gives "Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card" as a subsystem. The relevant kernel module is "ssb." Currently this card will not connect. Nor can I force it to connect by directly editing the network interface. I've tried several times, but I can't get to a MAC address for it. What driver(s) or other kernel module(s) should I install, and where can I get them? Broadcom has a 32-bit and a 64-bit tarball for what they say is a driver for this card. Should I install that on my system? Please advise. It seems a shame to operate any laptop without wireless connectivity. Temlakos

I doubt I still have both before and after grub.cfg I have no proof at all that grub2-mkconfig after each kernel update is needed. I got this from an old thread [including you Chris Murphy] [And specifically the combo command from Gilboa Davarra] I could easily have misinterpreted it. F20 kickstart can't select a disk

Trying to install Fedora 20 via kickstart on a x86_64 server. This has worked previously on several other identical servers. On this one, installation stops at the first screen with the error, "no disks selected". Watching more carefully, the message is first, "failed to save storage configuration", changing to "no disks selected" after a moment or two. Examining the anaconda logs (via the alternate consoles) did not reveal any smoking gun (or I don't know what to look for). Manually selecting the disk item from the menu, choosing the /only/ disk on the machine, and selecting "continue" just repeats the error. Doing that again, this time choosing to manually partition the disk but accepting all the defaults anyway, the kickstart continues and appears to finish successfully. However, the installed system is missing something, or several somethings. The network does not start. Several other start-up steps fail. Manually starting the network makes it appear that the machine is mostly normal. Repeating the kickstart yields the same result. Ideas? Solutions? I see that there are several complaints of this problem back on F18 but I haven't found recent comments. -- Dave Close

SMB Browser Election Thread (Was: Case for an occasional system refresh or clean install)

To Tim in Australia: That must be it. The machine I was retiring (see the other thread) was indeed the Master Browser. The replacement machine and the laptop both accepted it in that role. And after I retired the machine, neither of the other machines could browse. After awhile, they would see the Windows machine. Which does not run all the time, by the way, but I will address that in another thread. Anyway: after several hours of running the replacement machine and the laptop, and correcting the configuration file and service-start instructions on both, they seem to have settled on a regular Master Browser. Hosts come up very quickly, without delay. With that said: you mentioned installing Network File System in a Windows environment. (Mine's Windows 8.1.) I'd like to know how to get NFS to run between two Linux boxes. That would be a start. Then I could think about installing an NFS service and configurator on the Windows machine. Temlakos

To produce the latter, I replaced the existing optical drive with a Blu-Ray burner from LG. (I forget the model number just now. It's rated at 14-spin.) Hauppauge Computer Works is the clear winner for video capture devices. And they are the only company that builds a capture device for American high-definition television (1920 x 1080, interlaced). Level of satisfaction: fair. Every now and again, a captured video will not transcode. It will hang at a certain scene--always the same scene if I try to abort and restart, so nothing will serve except to capture it all over again. (Which is why I always capture a DVR recording, or at least have a DVR running to back me up in case the live capture fails.) I have found that nothing less than two hours of total down time (physical power-off shutdown) will suffice to cool down the processor before I can make another capture. (If I try to "just be patient" and let the authoring tool complete the transcode, it will transcode all right--but the optical disk it produces will be unplayable--a "coaster.") And even then--well, just now I am waiting to try for the third time to capture a recording. And I have enough coasters to set a table for an IT banquet. Now anyone here can jump in to tell me whether the MythTV project has anything going with the Hauppauge HD-PVR2. And how soon Linux will be able to "just play" a Blu-Ray disk, either commercial or one of my home-burn jobs. Temlakos

Why won't smbd and nmbd start automatically on system start?

Everyone: I have two computers, one desktop and one laptop. I did clean installs on both. In the process, I retired a third computer that had been running samba without incident for years. Today I can get samba running on both machines. But: I have to execute two commands: $ sudo /sbin/smbd -D $ sudo /sbin/nmbd -D by hand, in a terminal (Konsole), every time I start or restart either computer. The system-config-services app fails to note that smbd or nmbd are even available for starting. How do I get those two daemons to start automatically, so that I don't have to type those two commands every time? Because until I do, I have no file-sharing capability. (I have yet another computer on my network: a dedicated Windows box that I use for video capturing. I've said on other threads I am not satisfied with the video-capture and DVD authoring support Linux provides, and note that Linux does not support Blu-ray, in playback or especially in burning. So samba is a must for me.) Temlakos

Case for an occasional system refresh or clean install

Everyone: No complaints here. Just some insights from some recent experiences. Bottom line: everyone who administers a Fedora system, should do a "clean install" or an effective system refresh (reinstalling the OS and all apps on a system having a separate /home partition) at least, I would say, once for every three new versions of Fedora. The "fedup" app lets too many minor faults accumulate in a system over time. Result: you are cheating yourself and your users of a good user experience. Long ago I did a yum upgrade from F14 to F17. At first everything went swimmingly. And then I got the problem some of you might remember my complaining about: after two hours of operation, or maybe four or five or six hours if I were especially blessed (or as quickly as five minutes if I were under a special curse), new windows and dialog boxes would open as an unrelieved black. (Some KDE pop-up menus and notifications would pop up as a transparent outline.) I filed bug after bug after bug with Bugzilla. I re-filed with every new upgrade, which I accomplished with fedup. From F17->F18, F18->F19, and F19->F20, the problem persisted. Frankly I'm surprised the PTB's didn't CLOSE the bug as WONTFIX. Two weeks ago I acquired a new, replacement machine for one of the two mini-towers on myh network. At the same time, the mouse on my F20 machine went wild, opening and closing windows and pushing buttons without my conscious input, so I couldn't stop it. Finally the mouse just quit. I figured out what happened: the mouse cable had frayed. Happily, with the new shipment, I got a USB mouse and a USB keyboard that I now can keep as spares. But I decided to put F20 on another machine I had intended to replace. (It was a video-capture machine, and I needed a faster processor with more memory to do it properly.) I figured, why not go from a Pentium Dual-Core with 3 GB RAM and a 500-GB HDD to an Intel Core 2 Quattro with 8 MB RAM and a 1TB HDD? This involved downloading and burning an F20 KDE live spin, inserting it into the intended replacement machine, and doing a complete system format--reclaim the drive space, put in the new automatic partition (50 GB for /, 8 GB of swap, 500-MB physical boot partition, and all the rest, 790 GB, for /home), install F20 from the Internet, and painstakingly replicate my old environment--or at least those parts of it I wanted. Fresh install of samba, Firefox, Thunderbird, gnucash, and any other application I used regularly. I learned later that the old machine had been providing a crutch for samba connectivity to other machines on the network. When I retired the old machine, I lost that. Temporarily. I had to relearn everything I'd learned and forgotten about configuring samba by directly editing the smb.conf file. But now I have two machines--a desktop and a laptop--that can establish samba connectivity independently. But that black rectangle problem I complained about? That is now solved! And something else: dialog buttons have a new, "more modern" look. This should have come with the F19->F20 fedup upgrade. But it did not. It came with a clean install on a brand-new physical box, to which I have migrated all my "stuff." I can only conclude that the yum upgrade introduced the first of several cumulative errors. Every upgrade since then, introduced another one, and another, and another. These errors pile up. They won't cause a catastrophic failure, but they will create several annoying problems you might never solve. To the development team that gave us fedup, listen up! Your application is not taking care of all these little things. With /home partitioned off separately (as an LVM partition), I assume I can install F21 "cleanly" in the / partition without risking losing the contents of /home or my access to them. But I still have to write down every modification I made to a configuration file--or else keep copies of those files in /home. They would include, I also assume, things like the files holding the UIDs, GIDs, and passwords for Users and Groups. That's the only reason I don't plan to do a clean install every time. But I wouldn't mind doing it every other time, or every third time. To make sure these cumulative errors don't build up again. Again, I offer this to provide some insight into problems that we "amateur system administrators" sometimes have. Temlakos

But I have another computer that uses a regular Ethernet interface. The result, except for a different interface name, is the same. As a result, Samba suddenly won't work for me anymore. The only difference is, I permanently retired an old computer from my home network. That computer had been running Fedora 20, and I had made updates since Fedora 12. Now, with that computer no longer part of the network, neither of the two Linux boxes can see the other. But either of them can see a Windows physical box, so long as that box is turned on. Temlakos

How to create a single 4GB large ramdisk?

Hi, I need a single ramdisk which is a real block device (unlike tmpfs), so I found the ramdisk_size kernel boot parameter. However, after invoking "MAKEDEV ram" I get hundreds of 16mb large ramdisks, instead of a single 4GB large: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ram0 bs=1024k count=2048 dd: error writing ‘/dev/ram0’: No space left on device 17+0 records in 16+0 records out 16777216 bytes (17 MB) copied, 0.032487 s, 516 MB/s Any idea how to get a single ramdisk instead, I am using Fedora20 on x86_64 btw. Error while updating system

Then I left my machine alone for a few days, and came back to it figuring that I should run another update, so I did, and I received the same error. Does this indicate that anything worrisome is wrong? And, regardless, is there anything I could do to rectify the issue so that I don't keep having to run yum update commands with the --skip-broken option? Thanks

problems with a high res display

I have a Dell M4800 with a 3200x1800 display, an nVidia Quadro 2100M, and Fedora 20. It was working very well. But after installing updates today, the gnome display manager cannot start. Anyone know of a fix?

Wifi connection issues with Intel?

I looked though the last update and nothing jumped out at me... Tried journalctl --this-boot and paged through it, nothing jumped out at me. I've also tried all 3 installed kernels with the same result: Flakey wireless When I bring up the connection details (which takes to many clicks/menus) I see connection speeds of 1, 18, 24, or 54Mbit but this is a n device and has connected reliably at 108Mbit before now and the AP is less than 20 feet away. Sometimes connections get stuck at "resolving host" and other times it works. Anyone seeing the same issue? Thanks, Richard

Firefox 30 and NTLM auth

After last firefox update the NTLM auth do not work anymore. I have download the previous version of FF from Fedora old repo (firefox-29.0.1-1.fc20.x86_64.rpm) and install it: NTLM auth work. "Is it possible to force DNF to get the latest metadata on dnf upgrade?" Running KDE and the notifications in the systray showed there are 12 updates available. Figured I give dnf a try, which I've done from time to time, but it showed no packages to update. Volume too low on F20 (32bit)

Hello, After a fresh install of Fedora 20, 32bit, and adding enough packages to watch YouTube videos, I have sound (for both the YouTube videos and for Clanbomber), but the volume is way too low, almost inaudible. I have a volume setting widget on the lower panel and I set volume to maximum. I also set the volume to maximum in alsamixer and pavucontrol, even after setting VolumeOverdrive to true in kmixrc. I have kmix running. I removed and installed back pulseaudio to see if it makes a difference, and it seems it does not. When I start kmixctrl in a terminal, it finishes without anything happening. Hi, It seems running google-chrome on Fedora with selinux enforcing is not an easy job :) Most of the things are working, however certain plugins / apps like flash and offline gmail crashes... Kernel 3.14.5-200.fc20.x86_64 won't boot: module problem

On trying to boot the above kernel, I get a "Failed to start Load Kernel Modules" error. This appears to be caused by missing vboxdrv modules (from VirtualBox). Booting an earlier kernel works fine. Two comments: 1) I thought DKMS was supposed to rebuild the VBox modules for each new kernel automatically. This has happened in the past but seems to have failed now. Why would this be and how can I fix it? 2) The error message was unhelpful as it didn't identify which modules failed. It took some searching to find what the problem was. Surely this could be done better. (In fact I'd argue that failing to load these modules shouldn't result in a failed boot, but I realize that's maybe harder to deal with). poc

SSH question

Hi all! I feel dumb having to ask this, I feel I should know the answer, but can't dredge it up. I've recently installed F20 on my old eeepc, where it seems to run fine, btw, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to connect to it from another system with ssh. I've made sure that sshd is installed, and "systemctl list-unit-files" shows it as enabled. As far as I can figure out how to use the relatively new firewall app (and I have to admit some hesitance there since I'm not sure I really DO understand it...) the necessary ports are open. however when I attempt to connect to it with ssh from another box I get I get an instantaneous "ssh: connect to host 192.168.2.117 port 22: connection refused". And when I attempt to connect back to itself: "ssh -X fredex@localhost" I get the same thing. bash/shell script question??

Hi. Trying to run multiple copies of a test as a background process. I can easily cut/copy/paste the test cmd in the shell, and a check of the procTBL shows the instances are all running. However, if I do the same thing, and put it in a test shell script, when I run it, I don't get any of the instances running... Plymouth Uses Wrong Boot-up Theme

Hi, I have just configured Plymouth is install a graphical theme into the initrd. I specified that I wanted the 'Solar Flares' theme to be used, which correctly gets used at shutdown, but at start up the 'Solar Flares' theme is not used, instead the 'Hotdog' theme is used. Is this a bug in Plymouth or is this normal functionality? regards, Steve

Adding drivers to initrd using kickstart & dracut

I have a working kickstart for building a Fedora 20 guest. But I want to add Xen drivers to the guest's initrd. So far I'm doing: %post pushd /etc/dracut.conf.d echo 'add_drivers+="xen-blkfront xen-netfront"' > xen-drivers.conf popd dracut %end However although this creates the /etc/dracut.conf.d/xen-drivers.conf file in the guest, it doesn't add the Xen drivers to the initramfs. (I also tried running dracut --add-drivers ... but that does nothing). Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Desktop Sharing from Windows 8.1

I have a small home network, with two machines on it. One runs Windows 8.1. The other runs Fedora 20. I recently figured out how to open a Samba share on the F20 machine, and set up a trusted firewall zone. Now I keep getting notices like this: "Desktop Sharing: refused uninvited connection attempt from..." followed by an IP address and port number. The IP address is that of the Windows 8.1 machine, which seems to be trying a different port each time. I've looked at every administrative tool on both machines, and I can't figure out what that "desktop sharing" is all about, whether it would benefit me to have those two machines connect in this way, or how to make it happen if I wanted to. I need the help of someone more familiar with Windows 8.1 than myself--for I suspect this is some new Windows feature that the Samba server and client software is not designed to recognize, much less emulate. This is the only anomaly. The two machines are perfectly capable of sharing files with one another, at least when I connect as one user with the comparable user account on the other machine. Which is all I was really after. I'm going through all this because I want to replicate my F20 setup on another, more powerful machine. And I'm going to do it with a "clean install." Temlakos

Yum Update Cache out of Space Error

Hi, Can anyone tell me what the following errors are and why they are being shown when /var is in my root partition which has 695GB free space? There is insufficient space on the device. Free some space on the system disk to perform this operation. Wireless connect fails on laptop wake

Dear Fedorians, I am using F20 gnome on my laptop, and have great suspend/resume as I wander from meeting to meeting in different rooms. Except for the wireless. Maybe 1 time in 3 or 50-50 the wireless fails to connect on resume - it just loops. It is easily fixed: I disable the wireless either in software or hardware and re-enable and it works 100%. So it seems something is not optimal in the wireless recovery. I compare /var/log/mesages from good and bad sessions, and I find for a resume session: NetworkManager[1801]: <info> (wlp2s0): supplicant interface state: disconnected -> inactive NetworkManager[1801]: <info> (wlp2s0): supplicant interface state: inactive -> scanning wlp2s0: authenticate with XXX.YY.... wlp2s0: direct probe to XXX.YY.. (try 1/3) This then goes into an authenticate -> disconnect loop while for a good session where I switch off wireless in NM and on again: NetworkManager[1801]: <info> (wlp2s0): supplicant interface state: inactive -> scanning wlp2s0: authenticate with XXX.YY.... wlp2s0: send auth to to XXX.YY.. (try 1/3) this goes on to connect just fine. Any ideas what is wrong with my suspended session? It would be nice to be able to open my laptop and have it just work.... Thanks for your ideas! f18 keyboard and panel volume controls

Hi all, I put f18 onto a system three days ago and am having a lot of trouble making some basic things work. The old way of setting up keyboard shortcuts is gone and the mapping between the keyboard and XF86, such as Volume Mute <=> XF86Mute are gone. They now map to Pragha. We'll have to chalk that one up to sheer brilliance on somebody's part. The standard Volume Control on the top panel is also gone and I haven't been able to find a replacement for it either. Having to open Audio Mixer and/or Pulseaudio Volume Control (whose title bar makes no mention of Pulseaudio) is absurd to the extreme. Side note: there is now so much bloat that the only way to get VLC to play video and audio in sync is to run it --high-priority. That's a first for me. If anybody knows how to bring back keyboard control of volume and muting, and how to put a volume control back on the top panel I'd be most appreciative. losing WiFi Access - prompted for password

F18... Over the last few days, I'm getting prompted to re-enter my password for my WiFi network. It's not the router because no other device on the network seems to be having problems. Trying to install Fedora 20 32-bit version on a multiboot system (Windows 8.1 + PCLOS 32 + PCLOS 64) into a standard partition. Got up past setting passwords for root and user. Then it crashed with the following message: *********************************** The following error occurred whil installing. This is a fatal error and installation will be aborted. error population transaction: failure: Packages/s/systemd-python-208-9.fe20.:686.rpm from anaconda: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try. ************************************* Machine is desktop 64-bit Intel processor with 8GB ram, connected to Internet, Nvidia graphics. Uses BIOS, not UEFI. I want to install Fedora in order to run Linux version of DraftSight cad program, which has a Fedora rpm available and which does not run on PCLOS, for unknown reasons. So I have Skype on a f20 i686 system and actually USED it for a business call. I then quited Skype. But later I was looking into some things on the system and found that Skype still had a process running. I could not find it on the Gnome desktop anywhere, so I just killed the process. But I should be able to do this 'more normally'? thanks

Hello, I already filed a bugzilla issue with this [1] but I'd like to know if anybody else has troubles with VMs' network after suspend. And if others are able to do a "systemctl restart network" successfully. I mean, am I an isolated case because of some unknown configuration I have or is this common? What I do is: launch VM suspend laptop wake up laptop after awhile (1 hour maybe) network of VM loses default route systemctl restart network # fails on both fedora 20 - guest and host I'll appreciate if somebody else with same experience comments in the bugzilla issue directly. Joining the modern era: Xinerama to XRandR

Got RandR setup in place here with a 3 monitor setup, but have hit a sticky wicket relative to previous Xinerama setup (which I have reverted to until I find a suitable workaround). With Xinerama we can stich together separate X screens under a single large display. This allows me to use my monitor calibration/screen inversion application *xcalib*, on a per screen basis. For example, by default all screens are inverted (i.e. black background) but sometimes I need to see a website I'm working on as it really looks against a white background. With Xinerma I can toggle background color on a single monitor. With RandR all 3 screens invert at once, which is jarring on the eyes. Is there way to get RandR to simulate Xinerma multiple pseudo separate X screens? Barring that, another calibration/inversion program that allows one to change state on a per physical monitor basis? *xcalib* only works with screen x/display :x and RandR only has a single screen, thus the all-at-once jarring state change. Fedora 20 minimal install: default user directory oddity

Hey all. I fedup'd from F18 to 20 a couple of weeks ago (suprisingly smooth process) but decided to blow it all away in favor of a F20 minimal install as I am "fed up" with Gnome ;-) So, here we are on a minimal install with no DM or DE, just i3wm with agetty --auto-login as a quick & dirty autologin solution. Overall everything works swimmingly, quite pleased with the setup. One issue has me puzzled, however. When I open up a terminal (or even from a tty) by default I am placed in slash root vs. my user directory. The workaround I'm using is to stick a "cd $HOME" in the last line of my .bashrc What is causing this? Does one need to login via a DM in order to get placed in user home directory? If so, why does a tty session default to slash root? Thanks for an explanation if you've got one.

background - "stopped" how to kill!

Hi. I know this isn't really a fed issue, but I'm curious to how to handle it. I have a basic test php app foo.php I run it from the cmdline - it sleeps, it dies, life is good. The pID is removed from the procTBL as expected. However, if I change the running to be -- foo.php & so the test runs as a background process, the process gets listed as "Stopped" "T" in the status of the procTBL. My question, is how the heck can I implement something within the test foo.php to have it die/be removed from the procTBL when it dies.. I've implemented the kill_posix within the app, and I've searched alla over trying to resolve this.. So, what the heck am I missing. And I know I could have an external app kill it, but that's the same as killing the foo.php test from the cmdline.. Thoughts/comments.. thanks

How I got Firefox 29 to not be slow.

Hi people. I realize this isn't a Fedora issue per se but I thought that being a number of people running Fedora use FF, I'd share my experience here. I use FF as my main browser. My apologies to the Konqueror developers. I do a lot of online research and it isn't uncommon for me to have 10 FF instances running with over 50 webpages (tabs) open in total. Lately FF has been very slow. Probably since FF27, though at first I didn't pay much attention. Lately its been a huge annoyance. I tried everything to speed it up. Disabling disk caching, selectively disabling various flash options, changing the graphics backends, etc. All to no avail. Today I happened to stumble upon the solution to the problem. Out of frustration I installed Chrome and began to use it. In doing so I completely closed all the FF instances I had open. I've done this before, but for whatever reason, this time was different. I was using Chrome, doing some light browsing when I accidentally started a FF instance. When I did, I received a message stating that there was already a FF instance running. I aborted the startup. I ran a "ps aux | grep firefox" only to find a ghost firefox instance still running. I killed it. I then restarted FF, only to find that it is now peppy once again. I hope this helps someone.

Insert -> Envelope -> Format tab -> Size #6 3/4 (Personal) Envelope -> Insert File -> Print preview shows a Size #8 (Monarch) Envelope format, which is the menu selection just above #6 3/4 (Personal) Envelope in the Format tab list. Then I have to just power cycle and start the inflationary cycle all over again. I'm ready to ditch gnome, ditch kde, ditch plasma, or whatever just to get a system that will stably stay up for more than a week or so. Hi, I have just installed Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.5.5 on Fedora 20 from the rpm provided by Adobe but it won't run. Can anyone tell me what the following warning it produces when run from a shell? (acroread:4395): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "ia_ora" After producing this warning acrobat produces a "File read error" dialog and doesn't run. I am running kde and the "ia_ora" component of the above message I assume is because I am using the "ia_ora_smooth" gtk widget set, and, I have the /usr/lib64 theme engine path that all the kde themes are installed into in the path list in path list in the widget path configuration. Just as a slight side issue to this does anyone have any experience with Eclipse 4.3.2 and windowbuilder, I have an issue at the moment that when I click on a widget I want to add to the gui design, or try and select a property on an existing widget in the design, I get a dialog complaining of an acrobat read error displayed twice. The issue only occurs the first time I try this in an eclipse session. I was getting this issue with acrobat 9.5.1 and uninstalling that version and installing 9.5.5 does not rectify the issue. Any help on these issues would be much appreciated. regards, Steve

Hello, I was wondering if their is a way to have multiple desktop environment on a system without one messing with other. Anytime you have multiple desktop environment on a system they will start writing each others configuration files messing up with themes. Not to mention populated application menus. Fedora-like Linux for 1.99GB RAM?

Hello, I need a new OS for an old computer, an about 10 years old x86. I upgraded RAM from 500MB to 2GB, though Windows XP reports 1.99 GB. I would have installed Fedora, but they say the requirements are at least 4GB RAM. Is there any Linux distro similar to Fedora that works for 1.99 GB RAM? I'd love to use KDE, although if it really doesn't work, I could also settle for Xfce. Thanks! A word to the wise regarding failed fedup upgrades

Hi all, Just a quick piece of advice. If you try to fedup and the fedup doesn't work (completed but kernel panic on boot) don't try to 'yum erase' the duplicate RPM's. I goes through the uninstall process and removes all the GLIBC files and leaves you with a totally stuiffed server

Hi out there, I'm trying to torify Mozilla Firefox (I know that there's the modified version of Firefox made by them; but I like to use the official release of Firefox, and I don't to deal with update out of the updates provide by fedora). I installed privoxy, and it works, firefox access all the web pages through the proxy; so I setup tor using vidalia, I introduce the proxy address and then I check it out if firefox is torify using this page: https://check.torproject.org/ and it says "Sorry. You are not using Tor.". What am I missing? -Isaac C.

no minimized icons

I am running fc14. gnome 2.32.0 recently desktop behaviour changed in that when I minimize firefox or openoffice, no icon appears in the toll bar at the bottom of the screen. the programs are sleeping. I can restart firefox with alt+tab, but this has no effect on openoffice. any ideas? TIA rfjones

Has anyone successfully got this working between two Fedora 20 machines? The app says that the default port -- 24800 -- is not available. I don't know why, I can't see anything taking it in the firewall or anything, but anyway, changing to different ports doesn't seem to help... the client and server never connect. Can anyone give me any pointers as to how to start to troubleshoot this? On Fedora 20 x86_64. According to "man ping", ping should work from a subinterface specifying either the interface name or its address: > -I interface > interface is either an address, or an interface name. Adding minimal X windows

I built a Fedora 20 system as a server, without a desktop. It turns out, no X server is installed at all in that case. I'd like to add a minimal X server without adding a complete desktop environment, so I can log in remotely and run system configuration tools. The documentation I've found suggests yum groupinstall "Basic X Window System" or yum groupinstall "X Window System" but neither of those groups exist. There is a Basic Desktop group, but it installs a bunch of unnecessary desktop tools. What's the best way to get just a basic X server in Fedora 20? Samsung ML-2165W printer help

Hi all, Just bought the Samsung ML-2165W/XAC printer because it advertised Linux support. Downloaded and installed the driver (it claims installation successful). The user manual seems to be flat out wrong. The Linux install directions seem to be for Windows. "-------------------- When the Administrator Login window appears, type "root" in the Login field and enter the system password. You must log in as a super user (root) to install the machine software. If you are not a super user, ask your system administrator. From the Samsung website, download the Unified Linux Driver package to your computer. Right-click the Unified Linux Driver package and extract the package. Double click cdroot > autorun. "-------------------- Note: there is no such named package and their is neither a file named "cdroot" nor one named "autorun". At any rate, when I attempt to print a page the printer's activity light flashes for a long time then stops. CUPS reports "completed". This occurs regardless of whether there is paper loaded or not. Cups isn't being very helpful here either. Almost anything administrator related tells me "Forbidden", but nowhere can I find a way to "Login" to it. Part of me says the driver doesn't work and part of me says the printer is DOA. Has anybody else had any success with this particular printer model? Thanks for any help or tips, Mike Wright

Live USB: Persistent Overlay full so system won't boot. Snapshot Invalid

I accidentally managed to fill up the live-rw overlay and now my system won't boot. It falls to the dracut emergency shell complaining that it cannot mount the root partition. Logs say: EXT-4-fs (dm-0): unable to read superblock SQUASHFS error: squashfs read data failed to read block 0x0 unable to read squashfs_super_block Can't mount root file system I've been trying to fix this following instructions at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/LiveOS_image#Merge_overlay_into_new_image The key step is: # echo $'\x01' | dd of=/path/to/overlay-file bs=1 count=1 seek=4 conv=notrunc But I'm stuck because I'm not sure what /path/to/overlay-file is for me. Neither of the mentioned files seem present, at least in the dracut emergency shell. # dmsetup status does show "live-rw: 0 8388608 snapshot Invalid" Is this the right way to fix this? Where do I find the right overlay file to flip the Invalid bit at? Would love to get any advice on this. Right now I'm stuck with a non-booting system and no way to recover any data I had on it.

Caching nameserver for home network

I'm trying to set up a caching name server on a server on my home network. All the instructions I've been able to find online refer to the caching-nameserver RPM, but that doesn't seem to be available in Fedora 20. So my questions are: * What happened to caching-nameserver? * What (if anything) has replaced it? * Are there any good, easy *current* instructions for doing this?
