[FC8] ssh and CAC card???

From what I understood, the change to openssh listed in: rpm -q --changelog openssh |less as: "* Wed Jun 20 2007 Tomas Mraz <tmraz(a)redhat.com> - 4.5p1-7 - experimental NSS keys support - correctly setup context when empty level requested (#234951) " was supposed to allow the Common Access Card (CAC) to work with the shipped Fedora 8 ssh. This list's search engine not working?

Ever since I stumbled across this list, I seem to have major difficulties searching the archives. Say I want to see my posts to the list (they all have the same footer as below), I believe I could go to http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/ and enter "HaJo" as a search string. Searching in all sections, I get 0 results. Does the search engine ignore me by some reason? BTW -- I've been posting since about June, and when showing the archives sorted by author, I do find my posts. OK, not the most helpful to search for my own posts, but I do have the same issue when searching for given topics. Any other search engine out there indexing this list reliably? SATA optical drives

I'm currently running FC5, will probably upgrade to F7 in a couple of months. Unfortunately my CD/DVD rewriter appears to have died, before it's even seen a dual layer disk :'( SATA hard drives run without problems for me, but now that SATA optical drives are starting to appear in the shops, would it be OK to buy one of these and get rid of another wide ribbon cable? Is anybody already running them with Fedora? Thanks for any advice/experiences. Dave F

Changing date with procmail

Anyone know of a procmail recipe to change the date on incoming messages? If the date is in the future by more than 24 hours - I'd like to just change it to the current date. If the date is in the past by more than two weeks - I'd like to just change it to the current date. I'd like to do it in procmail - if someone knows how. I've done some searching, still have some to do. Found some stuff on extracting the date, but not on modifying it if necessary.

Hi, http://www.sysresccd.org/Download With the SystemRescueCd I backed up the /dev/sda6 partition in /mnt/backup/ naming "diskimage" After backing up operation the file has the automatic extension like "diskimage.000". Is this file ok to restore? If I name it "diskimage.gz" then it is automatically renamed with this extension "diskimage.gz.000" But here below http://www.sysresccd.org/Screenshots the file is name like this: "diskimage.pimg" Do I have to name with the .pimg extension during backup to restore correctly? And how can I restore it?

VPN options

I am planning on running a Virtual Private Network from my Fedora firewall out to a UML virtual colo (running RH9) at another site. That site will be the place I present services to the world; httpd, ssh, sftp, smtp. This is to comply with the "no servers" and dynamic ip restrictions on my Comcast connection to the net; if my firewall always drives an outbound connection to the colocation site, I am not worried about changes of ip address, and I am not opening any inbound ports. There are a number of options for the VPN - the most attractive are cipe ( http://sites.inka.de/sites/bigred/devel/cipe.html ) and FreeSwan ( http://www.freeswan.org/ ), though I am told that one can do all this through an ssh tunnel. I would rather have simple and secure than super-duper; I have plenty of bandwidth, and will send outbound http and smtp from the firewall, so the main bandwidth user will be incoming spam/b/b/b/b mail. Anyone have some experiences to share about setting up VPN? Is there anything about either cipe or FreeSwan that is likely to break with FC1 or FC2? nc missing option -z

Hi, I used to use netcat to check if a particular host is up or if I have internet connection before I run a few scripts. I would use the -z option in particular. But now I see that has been removed: $ nc -z imap.gmail.com 993 && sync-my-email.sh ncat: invalid option -- 'z' Here is the excerpt from the old manual page: -z Specifies that nc should just scan for listening daemons, without sending any data to them. It is an error to use this option in conjunction with the -l option. Any ideas what happened to it? What can I use as replacement? Thanks for any ideas. -- Suvayu Open source is the future. Ranter or evangelist?

Why is it that, when I insert an audio disk, I see it as an audio disk on my desktop, but when I click it, GNOME shows the .wav files that are present. No application is suggested, even under "Open", to play the damned music. If I go to Application, sound and video, the first option, "Audio Player", opens XMMS. Great! I click the forward button... I'm presented with a list of the... no, no, no! not the files on the CD, but the files in my home directory!!! Wow, we're really moving forward! I painfully navigate to /media, there's nothing in /media. Let's check mtab, my DVD/CD is on sr0, I believe. Nope, nothing there. Well, if the intend was to scare away Mac and Windows users, I would think that the success rate is 100%. I've been using Linux for 8 years and even "I" am scared! I do understand Fedora is for geeks, but would it make their life that difficult if things kinda worked? Didn't anybody notice that the present set-up makes absolutely no sense? At least, normally, you should go to => System, Preference, File Management, Media to select a default CD and DVD player. Still impossible! No option to change anything. I wrote about this. Nobody replied. Who's responsible for setting things this way? Is anyboby responsible somewhere or is it "We do all this together in a haphazard way" ? If so, never expect any significant market share for Linux. Radio-Canada will continue to use Windows Media because "Linux is too hard for ordinary people" (MSFT trademark). You think I'm a ranter? I've been told this quite often. But, while some people write code, I write to the Quebec Press Council. I explain that a certain so-called journalist is just a Microsoft sycophant. Every time he used Windows Vista, of course, there were a few... almost bugs. but certainly no show stopper. With Linux, the question is more complex. When a new version of Firefox comes out, for instance, instead of waiting for the upgrade, he gets the executable at Mozilla and, then, everything gets really complicated. Of course, the Press Concil understands perfectly what's going on. I made sure my basic complaint was very easy to understand: I explained the journalist NEVER discussed the appropriateness for the State -- television, amongst others -- of using proprietary format and never discussed tied sales. That's it, that's all. Still, after counceiding that the Press organisation lawyers had well understood my POV, the Council judged that the journalist gives a lot of coverage to Linux -- they didn't elabore on the kind of coverage: they can't evaluate, of course -- and, you know, given that Linux hardly has 1% of the market share, they found the coverage was adequate. So, I filed an appeal... and sent a copy to the Professional Federation of Journalists... I got my appeal. But the fight is far from over. The Press Council is heavily subsidized by the employer of said journalist, and Radio-Canada, another member of the Microsoft club. Seeing subsidies vaporize scares the shit out of those learned men: they could lose their precious jobs! So, they'll try every trick in the book to give a very mild tone to their judgement. But I have a few other tricks in my book to set the records straight, though having the support from the Linux community would certainly help. Cause... do you really believe I got any help from local coders for this fight? I got none, absolutely NONE. Why? Cause I'm a ranter. In other words, though I am not a programmer, when I see things that are not done correctly, I say so. They tell me I should fix the bugs. Why is it that there are so many programmers and I can't even set a default application for reading CD and DVDs? While I'm alone to do what I consider my job, why is it that the whole community doesn't get its act together to do such simple things? Sometimes I wished I could proselytize in a more positive way. I'd like to tell Apple users that Linux equals or surpasses OS X in user friendlyness, but it doesn't. It was like this ten years ago, it is still like this now. Countrary to what we could think from the success of Steve Jobs at the helm of Apple, in the Linux world, the only people who count are programmers. They'll fix things... soon. But Linux is not so young anymore. After 18 years, it has 1% market share. I believe there are some organizational bugs that need to be ironed out. For now, from an administrative POV, Linux is a merry-go-round that doesn't make much sense. What do you say, am I a ranter or an evangelist? Is it good for Linux to be ruled by programmers, the alternative not being necessarily the marketing department? :) Red Hat has some clout. How come they don't say "We want a music player that first detects CD files and plays them" and accept to include them on the default CD only on this condition? Etc., etc., etc.

Setting up HP laserjets (1012) to work with Fedora 11

Unrelated to topic: I lost quite a bit of messages downloading them from Altern to Thunderbird and not being able to upload afterwards* but I would like to thank Todd Zullinger for reminding me that welcome messages are not just a way for forums owner to be polite :) But somethimes, you have many things to read... * ping smtp.altern.org ping: unknown host smtp.altern.org This used to work, but not anymore, according to lantre.org. So, I'll have to set up a Gmail account. Later. ----------------------------- Setting up HP laserjets (1012) to work I discovered a bug with the setting of my printer, an HP 1012. The configuration seemed really easy as it was identified correctly on a USB Port. A few clicks, and I was done. I didn't even check to see if it worked: I never had a problem setting this printer for years. Then, I tried to print and I had a message saying that the printer wasn't connected. Weird: CUPS was installed, the wire was OK. I went back to configuration and I saw there's an option for using HAL, the Hardware Abstraction Layer. I do believe HAL has always been part of setting my printer. So, I selected it but received the message that the HPIJS driver was not available. (Note that I tried the Gutenprint driver when the printer wasn't set to use HAL: it didn't work.) I installed hpijs, now everything is fine. I don't remember ever being asked to use HAL with another distro: it was always put to contribution, I suppose. So, there must be a way around this. Most newbies will never consider an option that isn't selected by default for a printer. Most probably other printers that use HPIJS have the same problem. Those that use ppd files, probably not.

Did I really install Kmod-Nvidia ?

There are all sorts of instructions as to how to install Kmod-Nvidia on Fedora, but I thought yum would do a better job of guessing my configuration (x86_64, 9400 GT) to get the most up-to-date correct package and getting everything right. So, I just typed: yum install kmod-nvidia Now, /etc/X11/xorg.conf looks like this: # Xorg configuration created by livna-config-display Section "Files" ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia" ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules" EndSection Section "ServerFlags" Option "AIGLX" "on" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Videocard0" Driver "nvidia" Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True" EndSection Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "Enable" EndSection The file is only a few minutes old... So, I suppose it's a new config for the Kmod driver. But the process was so transparent, I can't help but wonder if all those modifications to the kernel that I read about in the doc have been made. If so, why not provide the documentation that all that is needed is to type the yum command? The Nouveau driver worked very well and, since I'm not too sure I'll install 3D, maybe I could have kept it. But my screen kept blanking once in a while for a few seconds. This happened with my previous computer too -- it had an old ATI card, the same monitor and a very standard open source driver for ATI -- but not so often and not for so long: it was just a quick blank. I thought this might fix the problem. Also, I intend to install a TV card and, it anything doesn't work, I'm sure the first suggestion from Nvidia will be to install their driver. As the material I buy is only on a one week money back guarantee, I prefer to make sure everything works in advance. Also, as it often happens when I download new packages, there was a socket error and a long (~ 1-2 min) halt before another server took over. (I forgot to save the console screen before I rebooted, but the name "liberty" was part of it.) After the installation finished, the rx/tx light of the modem began flashing very fast as if there was a download occuring... or maybe an upload if some information on the installation has to be sent back to rpmfusion or nvidia. No indication of what was going on appeared onscreen. Is this anything to be concerned about? Any idea What this transfer was about?

Hi all Fedora users, I have just joined this list. I am running the latest Fedora but I can't get my 3C900Combo networking card to work. I can see that the card is installed but no IP-address is asigned to it and I can't set it. So I think that there is a bug in that driver. Any other user out there who have a solution for this? RAGE XL Framebuffer

Hi all I know that is not a specific question about Fedora, but I can't find answer on the kernel mailing list. Is somebody having server with integrated ATI RAGE XL video card? Is it possible to patch the kernel to support this video card? If I add VGA=791 in my grub.conf, I will have a resolution of 1024x768 which is good, but the display is very slow (especially when the screen is scrolling). If I use I this: "video=aty128fb:1024x768@70" it will not work. I'm using kernel 2.4.22 but I will try 2.6.0-test11 today. If somebody has a patch, a link or anything else that can help me, it will be appreciated. Thanks for your help. I have two similar PC (old Pentium but workin fine) In Pc no.1 I upgraded from RH8 to Fedora and it went fine: Soundblaster is working fine In Pc no.2 I made a fresh installation but in redhat-sound-config Fedora doesn't see any card, that was working on Redhat 9 after soundconfig... Where is the trick?? I assume that my Sounblaster is an old 16...but fine on a router/firewall. Tnx Antonio

I don't need 3D acceleration beyond what's needed to run a typical desktop environment, but I'd like to have lots of RAM, a bit of CPU power (perhaps even a current Core i7) and an SSD with decent read speed.

This is about Fedora 21 which is still not released!!! Please read carefully. And it is only default on Workstation image (that is what I know) There is a new feature introduced in Gnome and NetworkManager which allows 'Captive Portal'[1] services to work. This may be useful feature for some users (that is why it is implemented), but most users won't use it, and it pings fedora servers every '300seconds', it is enabled by NetworkManager and 'NetworkManager-config-connectivity-fedora' << (package/config file) which is default installed in Workstation image only (currently, unless someone explicitly pull it in for other live images), 'gnome-shell' package only depends on it. Because I'm not a security expert, I don't want to say this is security issue, but privacy issue to some level (probably not critical), as I understand it, no more information than request to get a file is being sent (so only your 'IP' is exposed)), It currently uses HTTP to communicate with fedora servers, but it is planed to use HTTPS [2], without that you cannot verify who serves that file? (n00b here). At the moment users aren't aware of this feature, and most users probably never will find it working in the background, but I think it shouldn't be enable by default silently, so I filed a 'fesco' ticket for it [3] (PLEASE DON'T SPAM ON FESCO TICKET!, keep discussion here as much as it is possible) Please don't turn this thread to something which it shouldn't be. There's an init.d file for Dropbox for non-GUI servers. I'd like to use drobpox as a way to understand systemd a little better. In the init.d file, it pulls in a list of users from /etc/sysconfig. I'm trying to figure out how to do something like that with a service file. Google Account in GNOME

Soon after I installed Fedora 20 I used the online accounts config panel to set up my Google account. This worked well for several months. A few weeks ago, I changed my Google account password. Ever since then, GNOME keeps prompting me for my Google account password - but it won't accept either the new password or the old one. I just have to cancel the dialog box. I've tried removing the account and adding it back, but it still won't accept the password. Every time I wake the system from sleep, I get a dialog box asking for my Google account password which I have to cancel. Does anyone have any idea what's going on or how I can fix this? External drive is being mounted as read-only

Hello, Fedora 20 KDE Thinkpad T420i laptop has started mounting Transcend StoreJet 25M3 as read-only. I tried remounting with rw but it is still mounted as ro. The system is fully updated. I have recently scrub-ed the external drive to prepare for backup. BIOS boot partition, 4x3TB disks, and raid, problems with anaconda

Hi! I tried to set up a system using four 3TB disks as a raid6. The disks are new, no old partitions laying around. I used a USB stick as install media (Fedora 20 x86_64 Gnome Live). I chose manual partitioning to get everything as I wanted. When this was ready I got the error message that I also needed a BIOS boot partition (I gather that this due to being rather large disks). I tried to create one of those, but it seemed to only be created on one of the discs in the raid array, I wanted it created on all disks, just as the raid partitions. This to be able to boot from any of the disks in the array in case of a failure. As it is now, if the main disk dies, I can not start the system at all. Actually I ended up having three BIOS boot partition on the first disk, being 2, 1, and 1 MB large. Which is quite annoying. But that's another problem... Before submitting a bug report/RFE on this. Is there anyone out there that have done this, from anaconda? I.e. creating raid partitions and BIOS boot partitions on ALL disks? If so, how did you do it? Lars -- Lars E. Problems with screen to serial usb on F17

I have an old F17 Asus Eee700 and trying to hook it to a USB TTL UART as a serial console to some armv7 systems using screen: screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200 I am getting garbage characters. Not all the time, but particularly at the beginning. I don't see this on either of my two F20 systems: Lenovo x120e and Asus Eee900. I can't easily upgrade this Eee700 and I would be happy just using F17 screen. But is this likely to be OS or hardware?

bootstrapping from a USB stick

I have an oldish PC that only understands booting from 512-byte sectors and then only with MBR disks. I want to install large new disks on it, and no old disks. These don't even pretend to do 512-byte sectors: 4k all the way (3T and 4T sizes aren't good for MBR either). I was thinking that I should be able to use a USB flash memory stick as the boot device, loading GRUB from there, and then having it boot the OS from a big GPT hard disk. The stick would be permanently plugged in. Is there any reason that this might not work? Is there a better way? Are there special GRUB modules that I need to convince GRUB's installer to put on the USB stick? What filesystem type is best for the USB stick? My guess: ext4 is fine.

Cannot unlock screen after prolonged period of time

Greetings everybody! I'm a new convert to Fedora. I finally got it installed (hurray!) but ran into this issue: If I lock the screen using mod-L and immediately enter my password to unlock, the screen unlocks. But if I leave my computer be for an hour and unlock, Fedora doesn't accept my password. Some peculiarities of my setup: * I am using full disk encrypting using an LVM volume. Fedora setup set up my partitions for me. * I'm using a recent Macbook. I have all the latest updates installed for Fedora 20. My architecture is AMD64, and I'm using the standard (GNOME) spin. Secure Transactions

Hi all! I have been using Windows monitored by Norton used almost exclusively to do on line transactions and banking. The strategy is simply that I do not use it otherwise. Transactions only. But then the W8 laptop Norton would not update or scan!! First attempts at fix failed and refresh and reload – well – simply have not worked out so far (long long story). Then the crazy windows update problems this month have made me a bit shy to use the W7 installs I have. So I made up some Fedora 20 flash drives to more or less imitate the basic “used exclusively for transactions” function I was using Windows/Norton for. So far so good! Indeed I find banking using FireFox on Fedora simply easier to use (better fonts, colors, I think). I am simply seeking thoughts on the basic approach, alternatives, other things to do to make a secure transaction environment. Thanks all!! Tod

su - Authentication failure - reinstall fedora ?

Hi, after that I installed fedora 20, I am not able to get the login as su. When I try to sign me as super user, I always get the answer "Authentication failure". I don't think that I really type wrong the password that I set at install time:* I typed it twice*. Rather I think that they are some funny characters inside it. So I lost the hope to try to guess the password and I think to re install Fedora.., but I have a problem. My computer is dual boot with Windows XP and I am not sure how uninstall Grub (how to manage the MBR when to the computer start) before to uninstall Fedora... Some time ago I tried to fix this problem using Windows in recovery mode (command fixboot) and, at last, I had to reinstall also Windows XP (further that Fedora).. Can I have an advice how to arrange the dual boot on my computer, before to uninstall Fedora?? Thank you regards Angelo

F20 + Old but unused hardware continually core dumps

People, I have been trying to build a usable PC out of old - but previously unused hardware (motherboards, CPUs, RAM, 80GB Seagate disks, power supplies) - but whatever combination I use I continually get core dumps - I have reinstalled on numerous occasions and sometimes the PC works for hours without a problem and then fails - but quite frequently it fails on bootup! /boot/efi in a dual boot system

As I type this, I'm installing Fedora 20 on a UEFI system which already has CentOS 7 (and nothing else). Should the two systems share /boot/efi? As I understand it, the answer is yes: /boot/efi is universal on a machine. It is where the firmware goes to load things. Not just OS bootloader: manufacturer-supplied EFI utilities can live there too. But Fedora, by default, wants to create a new /boot/efi. What is the right thing to do? What will work? In the current installation, I've forced Fedora to use the existing /boot/efi. I guess I'll see how that turns out. I could not see any guidance in the Fedora 20 installation guide. <https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/20/html/Installation_Guide/s1-d…> In fact, the appendix on disk partitions didn't deal with EFI/UEFI/GPT, something I could have used. (After 20 years of living with MBR, I kind of got the hang of it.)

Fedora 20 and Dell Latitude e6400

Hello all, I was recently gifted an old Dell Latitude E6400 laptop and, given its age and what I've read, I thought getting Fedora 20 going on it would be smooth. And, to some extent, it was. I was primarily concerned with the wireless, but that seems to have been fixed for some time. Sadly, it wasn't without issues. I'm currently having issues getting my trackpad and my webcam going. I've done some looking around with no luck. For the touchpad, I get basic functionality. I can "tap to click" and use the pointer, but I can't use the scroll areas on the side/bottom for scrolling. Clicking both physical buttons don't perform a middle-click, and tapping with 2-fingers don't give me a "right" click. Going under "mouse & touchpad" in Settings only gives me very basic options. Running "xinput list" shows it being seen as a "PS/2 ALPS DualPoint TouchPad". Searching for Fedora and this don't yield much/anything. I'm running Fedora 20 updated as of today. Kernel is 3.15.10-200.fc20.x86_64. I also would like to get the webcam going. When I try to run Cheese, I get a "no device found" error. Running lsusb doesn't show a camera attached. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Brian

Fedora on MacBook Pro: need to disable graphical boot screen

Hello everyone! I'm attempting to switch to Linux from Mac OS on a Macbook Pro model number MacBookPro10,1 with the latest BIOS and firmware. I need to have full-disk encryption for work, so I allowed the fedora installer to set up an encrypted LVM volume alongside my Mac partition (I'm dual-booting). But alas! Upon booting for the first time, I get this error message: (In yellow) [3.226029] pci 0000:00:01.0: ASPM: Could not configure common clock [4.258867] i915 0000:00:02.0: Invalid ROM contents The boot then hangs...and nothing happens. i915 refers to the graphics chipset on my laptop. I had previously tried Ubuntu (which didn't end up being what I was looking for) and found that when I installed the server version, without the graphical boot, Ubuntu booted, but when I installed the desktop version, with a graphical boot, it did not. So I currently wish to disable graphical boot in Fedora. I'd also be happy to do a new installation to get rid of the graphical boot if that's what it takes. Any kind advice? Daniel

Chrome not exiting

Is it just me? After closing Chrome, ps -ef |grep chrome shows a chrome process running for each tab I had open. I have unchecked the option to allow background processes to run after closing chrome. killall chrome does not kill them. -- -- Steve

recovering lost files

greetings, i have 3 drives i need to recover that have damaged boot tracks. on the 3rd drive are boot track back ups that i need to recover. within the past year, a poster was needing to recover a file. a replier suggested a boot iso that recovered files and labeled them with a file label of file's size, instead of an arbitrary number. if the poster/replier, or anyone else recognizes iso i am inquiring about, i greatly appreciate their replying. i searched archives, did not find post. i have never found a good way to search archives. is there a page to make searching easier than opening individual archives? Up to Fedora 21, releases have occurred at roughly 6 month intervals. Fedora 21 is scheduled to be released about 11 months after Fedora 20. Is the intention to schedule future releases at roughly 12 month intervals, or is the long interval for Fedora 21 only (or whatever)? Will Fedora 20 be supported till Fedora 22 is released, or for about 13 months after it was released, i.e. about January 2015 (or whatever)? Sorry if this has already been discussed; I haven't been following the list carefully.

My flash card slot in the laptop is (per lspci): 03:01.2 SD Host controller: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C822 SD/SDIO/MMC/MS/MSPro Host Adapter (rev 21) I insert into it a SanDisk 16GB Extreme SD card. This card is not marked as a secure card. At least, it does not say so on the card. High CPU usage, load average and system temperature

Hello, My system temperature seems to be very high these days along with CPU usage and load average. Chrome, Eclipse, etc. seems to be misbehaving but I am not able to pin point the problem. Chrome usage skyrockets whenever I am browsing multimedia rich websites even like Google+ (those gifs). VLC seems also to cause a lot of these problems. I am posting a bunch of screenshots of top. ext4 error messages

I have an external esata HD (the WD20NPVX) connected to the laptop via an esata cable to the esata port of the laptop. I am getting ext4 errors for that device (/dev/sdb3 which is only mounted partition on that drive), and even getting ext4 errors on /dev/sda3 which is the root partition. systemd never starts ntpd.service even though it is enabled

For some reason, ntpd.service never starts when one of my laptop boots. systemctl status ntpd.service says: ntpd.service - Network Time Service Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/ntpd.service; enabled) Active: inactive (dead) It's enabled. It should start, or at least attempt to start and fail for some reason. It doesn't even start. After the laptop finishes booting, I can manually execute systemctl start ntpd.service, and ntpd comes up just fine. journalctl /usr/sbin/ntpd doesn't report anything, except when I manually start ntpd after boot. ntpd.service is unmodified, and identical to my other laptop, and all my servers, all of which have no issues starting ntpd during boot. Stumped on this one.

Blueman on F20?

I'm running F20 XFCE and the bluetooth app leaves a lot to be desired. I've been using Blueman before upgrading and it was great. Currently I'm using the KDE systray app (bluedevil?) There's no obvious way to install blueman; yum just says it was deprecated by bluez -- which is not true (it only is in the sense that the older blueman version is not compatible with bluez5) Does anyone know how to get blueman running (hopefully without having to compile it)? Thanks

mate goof?

On my #2 machine (which has been running Gnome3 for a few days; I can do it now, but still don't like it much), I looked around, but couldn't seem to lay my cursor on the proper way to install mate. So I tried "yum install mate," and got nothing. Then I tried "yum install mate*" and got bushels whizzing by. So many and so fast that I begin to suspect I shouldn't've.... Is there something else I should now? "yum install *mate" or "yum install mate-*" or the like? F20 is fubar

As far as I am concerned the full system dvd is really not the way to install F20. I was unable to choose extra packages after choosing a de without wiping my chosen de. After the install, while it did recognize my ASUS N18 wireless usb nic, and load the right driver, it would only load 1 internet page or do only 1 yum install without a reboot. It is good that the networking comes up on boot, however it would be nice, when the system encountered a nfs mount in the fstab, it would mount them before completing the boot process. After installing firefox, which took 2 attempts, it took 4 reboots to install 4 addons. The webserver, while it does start on boot up leaves a lot to be desired for speed of loading even after being woke up. First thing I did was disable selinux and firewalld. I find that they are more pita than they are worth for a server that does not connect to the internet that often. I tested the system with the kde spin and it worked as expected. 4 USB TTL uarts on a USB hub - keeping them straight

Well, if I had a hub with more ports, I would have more of these, as I have more systems to interface with the serial console.... Anyway it seems that the dev assignment changes. They are /dev/ttyUSB[0-3] But at different times they are a different number which makes it hard to consistantly connect to the desired system. Is there someway to identify the units and assign them permenant device names. Much like is done with ethernet?

HD Video editing

Which video editing software is capable of editing HD video? I understand that there are complications wrt. patents, so I know I'll probably have to build it myself. That's not a big deal, but I'd rather not have to try out several different packages, before finding somethuing that's suitable. WiFi permanently disappeared after booting test kernel

Hi, On my netbook I booted a test kernel 3.8.0-rc4+ I compiled. Now after booting back into my regular Fedora kernel 3.6.11-5.fc17.i686.PAE my wifi network device remains permanently disappeared. No wifi networks displayed in Network Manager gui. Also the Network Manager syslog messages make it look like the device has completely disappeared. Suggestions for restoring wifi welcome. USB monitor refresh

Hi All; I bought a usb powered portable monitor (AOC e1649Fwu) for when I travel... If I plug in the usb connections before I boot my laptop it works (Fedora 20, Lenovo W540) however the refresh rate is slow (I'm guessing) as it doesnt refresh the screen until I pass the mouse cursor over that area. It is usable but sortof a pain... thoughts on how to debug/fix this? Thanks in advance

creating 70-persistent-net.rules

This is on a f20 arm system, but it should be like any F20 system. Yeah, famous last words. So I want a 70-persistent-net.rules so I can specify the MAC address to the device name. Then in the ifcfg-xxxx I can change the MACADDR to what I want. I got this working on my Redsleeve arm system, but now I need it on my F20 arm system. So I have done a little searching on creating 70-persistent-net.rules, and I come up with two commands: udevadm trigger udevadm trigger --action=add I have run both and no 70-persistent-net.rules help please...

Suddenly my laptop when rebooted doesn't start in the usual way After six months of hard work) but it stops when bootib with this message drm:cpt-serr_int_handler ERROR PCH transcoder a FIFO underrun and the appears some lines with request for password for maintenance mode or CTRL-D option... If I open journalctl -xb I see some errors in particular saying that fsck failed with error code 4 on dev/mapper/fedora and suggestint to use fsck. How do I revover from this situation?? Hi, I am using Fedora 20 on two computers and I have also one computer that use Windows 8. I wont realize a local network with these computers, but I am a little confused about the way to arrange my (client server) network configuration . I understood that DHCP is the core to do the network configuration, but I have some doubts about how I have to arrange it. Reading the documentation, I got the opinion that nothing need to do in the computers that have the role of Clients on the net; instead on the computer with the role of Server it need to write the file /etc/dhcpd.conf. That is exact ? What other important operation need to do to do becouse my local network works correctly? It exists a good PRACTICAL tutorial to accomplish this task? Thank you regards Angelo

Get rid of F20G3 screen locker??

I'm giving Gnome 3 another try, and still find it very annoying to have to keep re-entering my password. (The machine I have it on is one of four on a KVM switch.) I tried removing Gnome's own screensaver and installing xscreensaver, but that hasn't worked -- yet at least. (I've been too busy configuring this and another machine to find time yet for a log out and back in, much less a reboot.) Hi I have a Corsair Flash Voyager GTX USB3 memory stick which is advertised as supporting TRIM. More on my compressing images from SDcards. I only need the boot info and 1st partition, so I remove the other partitions, but of course there is still 1s out there so it will not compress efficiently. I remember reading somewhere, what replaced it but can't find the reference :( udev USE to have: /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules But as I recall, with systemd, things have changed. I need it to see what MAC addr is set for and interface name.

F20 XFCE: no right click

Newly installed F20 on an Acer Aspire. XFCE. The trackpad has no right click. In addition, I can't move or resize windows. The paw or double arrow appears, but nothing happens when I try to move it. And, I can't "paint" text to copy it. Installing firmware for intel 7260

I'm setting up a laptop with Fedora 19 up-to-date. The wireless chip is an Intel 7260.HMW, and I've confirmed that it works (under windows). The chip was not recognized by the install, so I did a yum install of iwl7260.firmware.noarch. That did not install the module, and insmod refuses to install either of the two ucode files. So, presumably they're not modules ("firmware" might be a clue?) So, how should I proceed at this point? Thanks.

I've just installed F20 on on an Acer Asprire, A8-7100, R5 Kaveri graphics. startx runs, then exits the server. My errors show /dev/dri/card0 no such file. Is this because the kernel isn't loading the radeon module? digikam problem

I wrote to the digikam list about this a few days ago, but haven't gotten any response, so I thought I'd check here before filing a bug. On a fully updated Fedora 20, I've had the following problems importing images from a Canon EOS SL1 since the update from digikam 3.5 to 4.0 (which I got July 26): - The digikam camera window doesn't show thumbnails or previews, just icons for RAW and/or JPEG. I can't seem to preview the images to select the ones to import. Digikam does recognize the camera, it just won't show thumbnails or previews of the images on the camera. - Digikam gets the date from JPEGs to do renaming as I have specified, but it seems to think that all of the RAW files were created on 1969-12-31 at 19:00:00, at least from the filenames it's generating. Once the files are imported (I just import all of them without doing any selection), the "File properties" shows the correct date. (Well, up to time zone issues: my camera is set to Eastern Daylight Time, and Digikam seems to be interpreting that as Universal Time and then correcting for my computer's time zone, so things are off by 4 hours--but this was true before the update, too. Is this a configuration problem on my part?) - I have digikam set to create a new sub-album with the date; so I have <root album>/<year>/<month>/<date>. I'm importing into the <month>. JPEGs are correctly put in a sub-album with the date, but RAW images are put into the <month>, not into a sub-album. I assume this is connected to not being able to correctly get the date for the RAW images during the import. All of this (except for the time zone stuff) worked fine with 3.5. I tried downloading the bodhi builds of digikam 4.2 for Fedora 20, but I'm seeing the same issues as with 4.0. I looked through the digikam mailing list archives and saw that some other people had problems with previewing images from the camera with Canon cameras on 4.0, but the only response was a claim that digikam was using gphoto2, with no details or follow-up. (I can download the images from the gphoto2 command line, too. The problem is not seeing thumbnails in the camera window to decide what to download, or getting the dates on RAW images.) Shotwell seems to be able to generate thumbnails of images in the camera before downloading and gets the correct dates on RAW images. I only started using digikam in early July, so it may well be that this is pilot error, but I haven't been able to figure it out from the documentation. I don't think I changed any digikam settings with the upgrade from 3.5 to 4.0, and nothing about the camera changed at that time. Thanks for any help. HP officejet 7500A loose wireless connection with f19 & f20

Hello, I have used this printer for about a year with f19 early release, no problem, but I am not sure if I ever used with F20, then for while now I can't no longer print. A couple time I was able to print after going through the printer setup and re-installing the printer on computer, but only last for one or two print. The desktop is a Dell dimension 8300 dual boot F19 and Win XP, Laptop HP Envy dv7 with F20 they both doing the same. while I can't print with F20 I can print with Win XP. I will appreciate very much some help, HP support don't even talk to me after mention Linux.

NVIDIA X Server Settings thinks I'm not running NVIDIA driver, but I do.

Hello, I installed the nvidia driver via yum from RPMFusion and lsmod confirms that nvidia is loaded and nouveau is not. But when I run the NVIDIA X Server Settings (KDE on F20), it claims I do not appear to be running the NVIDIA driver and should configure it by running nvidia-xconfig as root and restarting the X server. nvidia-xconfig creates an new /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (see below). Previously, no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file existed. Then, when I try to re-start X, it will not start saying no screens found, until I remove the xorg.conf file and then everything is back to normal, including NVIDIA X Server Settings saying that I do not appear to be running the NVIDIA driver. Did some googling and followed some advice to set the BusID in xorg.conf, but did not help. Any ideas? Thanks! Where can I find SELinux knowledge

The setup is armv7 (Allwinner A20 based Cubieboard) F19 remix kernel Redsleeve EL6 SELinux is coming up disabled, and I can't figure out what is needed. And no help on the Redsleeve list, as its heritage is armv5 and the kernels for them do not seem to have SElinux support, so no experience with enabling it. Of course there is the 'age' mismatch of F19 kernel and EL6, don't know if that is an issue. Centos7 for arm is aways off, so for now production is RSEL. And F21 is also aways off and F20 is a remix; I AM working with it for some cases.

Hi, First of all thanks for Fedora, I am a (most-time) happy user since Fedora 2 and it is really great to see how all the improvements accumulated over time. Especially with the accelerated release cycle of Mesa, it would be great if Fedora could keep up in the same manner as it does with the kernel. Mesa 10.1 is effectively dead with 10.2 beeing considered "old, stable and boring" now. So the descision is not between shipping stable/proven versions vs. bleeding edge, but rather shipping outdated stuff vs maintained stable versions ;) Thanks & best regards, Clemens

ibus-daemon & gnome-shell: high cpu usage...

Hi all, Gnome (for some reason) takes all my cpu power under fedora 20 64 bit. And if I kill ibus-deamon, the session still runs. But I cannot kill gnome-shell. When ever I start a computation, gnome-shell kicks in, and takes *all* cpu. A tool for Ext? partitions.

Need a tool that can scan an entire drive (which has no partition table - as it got accidentally clobbered by dd'ing 512 bytes into it), and determine start and end of ext(2/3/4) partitions. I need this so that I can restore each ext? partition to a separate HD. So far I have found a windows based tool from EaseUS.com , but is not open source and is not free. Thanx, JD

--mke2fs pre-computes the ratio of number of inodes to total number of available block in the chosen partition are you implying/saying that there can only be a single inode count for a given patition size?? in my case, I'm going to have a large number of small files (2-5K) and I might have millions in my test. stock f20 bootloader not signed

Hi all, I just did a fresh f20 install in UEFI mode (no CSM) with secure boot enabled and while it booted the USB stick fine after the initial reboot I get an error about the bootloader not being signed and have to disable secure boot in order to boot the machine. I did a search on Bugzilla for the error message and didn't find anything. Has anyone encountered this error before? The machine is a HP Zbook 17 with the latest firmware (BIOS) update installed. Hi guys/list. Looking into installing centos/fedora and I'd like to increase the inodes on the partitions. So I'm trying to find a step by step process to accomplish this. As far as I can tell, the GUI/Anaconda doesn't have any place for me to insert the increased inode count. Comments would be appreciated. ps. I know I can take a partition offline, reformat it, and increase the nodes, but I don't see how one can do this with the primary/root portion of the drive on the same system.. thanks

Hello Patrick, Actually, I have a dual laptop which has Windows 8 and Kali, and a Macbook with OS X and Fedora, I can confirm that Kali didn't work with Secure Boot enabled! I wasn't aware that fedora actually supports Secure Boot until I checked fedora docs about UEFI[1]. However, it is still not as simple as paying Microsoft to include their keys and also I do not think that the system is flawless, as I still hear many fedora users with their complaints on Secure Boot. It's just a feature that is used to verify the signature on Windows Bootloader! Secure Boot is not meant to verify signature of Linux bootloader (GRUB) and I'm not sure if it comes with any! So, it's a Windows 8/8.1 only feature and you will have to disable it if you want to run fedora or some other OS! Please, don't go by its name. Command line for creating partitions

I am working now more on handcrafting my SD cards for arm testing. Gparted did not do a good job, allowing me to make parititions not on 'cylinder boundaries'. And the labels it created were not recognized when I mounted the drive. I had to use the disk utility to fix the labels. Anyway, to script it and to put this up on some wikis, I really need to do this by command line. So I have looked at both fdisk and parted. Neither are for 'simple' command lines. Fdisk takes me back to my DOS days (wonder where MS got it from?). So first I want a command that will delete all partitions on /dev/sdb then create a partition as ext3, then one as linux-swap, and finally ext4. Of course, I understand how many MB I want each, but I am suppose to (or so from the warnings that 'fdisk -l' provided) maintain boundaries. thanks for any pointers to the best tool(s) for this. So far my search foo has only gone to old fdisk pages.

bind-chroot?

I am trying to adapt all the config from an ancient (fedora 13) system where the disk died to the new disk I figured I might as well go ahead and update to centos 7. Is there anything magical I need to do to get bind and bind-chroot working? It looks sort of like the bind-chroot-setup service will automagically copy the config files into the chroot. What about additional zone files? Do I put them directly in the chroot directory, or do they get copied too? Is there any doc somewhere on the web for bind under systemd? (A quick google search didn't seem to turn up anything obvious). I also seem to remember a recent thread here about how to make things really wait for the network to be "up" and services like named not starting properly all the time. Any conclusions about the best way to fix that?

This might be OT - install from live CD to SSD

Trying to install Fedora 20 to a replacement Kingston SSDNOW300V 120 GB SSD, from the live CD (Mate DE spin). The previous similar SSD died after 4 months excellent use. My hardware is a bundle consisting of:- Motherboard - Asrock FM2A75 Pro 4+ with CPU an AMD trinity A4 5300, and 2x2GB DDR3 RAM What's happening:- On starting the bios (UEFI) can see the SSD (even displays the S/N); within UEFI is the only time I can see the SSD. Fedora 20 live CD boots up ok (bar can't see the SSD), and following the option to install to hard drive it can't see any hard drive. (I tried with Linux Mint 16, and the same problem). A friend has successfully connected to the drive via an external SSD reader (connected by USB 3), and used a program "Partition wizard 8" to format it, and copy and read some files successfully (he was running Windows 7). Any ideas what I could try ? Thanks, Joe

If I want to 'reset' SSHD to have all new keys do I stop it, delete the files: /etc/ssh/ssh_h* and restart it? This seems to be working... And does the server keep client sigs anywhere? I can't find any file that looks like it would be housing such... thanks for your help!

Error with xz

First I dd an SD card: sudo dd if=/dev/sdb of=/home/rgm/arm/rsel-minimal.img bs=4096 conv=notrunc,noerror Then I ran xz which produced an error: xz -k rsel-minimal.img xz: rsel-minimal.img.xz: Cannot set the file group: Operation not permitted Is this because the sudo made the owner of .img root? Do I ignore the error or go back and change the owner of .img? I will want to make this .img available to others to download and build their own SDcards for booting on Cubieboards.

gdm failed to auto mount ecryptfs

Suddenly keeps asking for Wifi key

Hello, For months or years, I was able to connect to my home Wifi without re-entering the key. Until some updates two days ago, which, I think, included NetworkManager. Now, whenever I boot first time during the day, it asks me for the Wifi key. I should mention that months ago, there was this KWallet thing which asked me for a password every time I wanted to connect, which was an enormous pain, and I somehow managed to disable it, and I was fine since, until now. I absolutely want to be able to connect to my Wifi without entering a password or network key every time. Thanks! cloned sd card is not booting

This is a Fedora arm problem, but probably more experience with dd and sd cards here... SO I boot my Cubieboard2 from microSD. I grabbed 8 16GB cards from the bin at the MicroCenter checkout counter. They work fine for building F21 arm boots, but I am getting far enough into the process that if I do something wrong, I don't want to go all the way back to the beginning. how to disable tmpfs

While lurking on the list, I learned in a thread "Cannot make a copy of video DVD with k3b" that the way fedora is configured, tmpfs will consume 50% of my RAM and mount itself in /tmp. If you have gobs of RAM I suppose you'd never miss it unless you are doing serious video editing or something like that. My system has only 3GB of RAM and it does appear that 1.5GB is now a tmpfs. I really don't have that to spare. I do have a 5GB /tmp partition on a physical HDD that I thought I had been using for years. Only now did I learn that I'm not. Rick Stevens suggested "systemctl mask tmp.mount" as a fix. I tried that and then I couldn't log in. It turns out, that command will make my / partition read only. I googled it and discovered that someone else had the same problem. There was no answer to that thread. You can fix this by "mount -o remount,rw /" and then issuing "systemctl unmask tmp.mount" and rebooting again. I tried editing the entry in /etc/fstab from UUID=996d5f64-0745-4af7-9260-559d5c66c7bd / ext4 defaults 1 1 to UUID=996d5f64-0745-4af7-9260-559d5c66c7bd / ext4 defaults,rw 1 1 but that still didn't mount / rw. So, how do I turn off fedora's tmpfs forever so I can use my physical /tmp partition and not consume all my valuable RAM? Or stated otherwise, how do I disable tmpfs AND keep / read-write? Thanks,

running a specified binary across reboots

Hello, Fedora users, I want to run a binary of some Fedora application I wrote immediately after reboot. I know that as a workaround I can wrap it as a systemd daemon, but I prefer not to. In previous fedora distros, making it run across reboots was enabled by adding an entry in /etc/rc.local. What is a good practice to achieve it in Fedora 20 ? there is no /etc/rc.local in my fedora 20, and trying to add an entry in /etc/rc.local does not cause it be be run across boots. regards, Kevin

seg fault - how to track down cause!

Hey guys.. Running a test parent php app that's a long running app. It spins out test child apps via the "system" call periodically. On an intermittent basis, the parent php app dies, and I get a segmentation fault error. Any thoughts/pointers on what I can setup from an OS perspective to allow me to track down exactly what's causing this to happen.. Thanks

inconsistent wifi at boot time, is it a kernel bug or NWM bug?

I filed the nitty gritty details as this bug against NetworkManager even though I don't know that it's a Network Manager problem. I don't see any kernel messages at all that indicate the kernel is mad or confused. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1127022 The gist is that if WiFi comes up at boot time, it works fine for the entirety of that boot "session". If I reboot, maybe it works again or maybe it doesn't (non-deterministic); and if it doesn't work, I can't get it to work it's a total fail. By fail, not only does it not connect to my network, it doesn't see any networks at all. Turning the WiFi radio off then on doesn't fix it. b43 wifi has been flakey since maybe kernel 3.11 for me, so it may very well just be time to give up on that and go with the proprietary driver *sigh* in particular because I only get 802.11g with b43. No wireless-N. So if there are opinions on being sane and just giving up, I'd accept that also. If you've got strong wifi knowledge, probably best to reply in the bug if I can enhance the quality of the bug reporting. If it's throwing spaghetti at a wall advice, I'll go for that too, but probably best to keep it on the list until there's something useful to report in the bug. Chris Murphy

Sendmail problem

Initially I thought this was a name server problem, but even after adding entries to /etc/hosts for localhost.localdomain.homeip.net (to point to 127.0.0.1) my sent emails keep queueing up and not being sent out. But I can now flush them manually. Any ideas what is wrong? And why is localhost.localdomain being prepended to my local domain name in the mqueue? I'm fairly sure this is my problem. What happened on July 30th? My yum logs show that no updates were applied between July 28 @ 22:46 and August 2 @ 00:50, but my outgoing emails started hanging up on July 29 or 30th.... I have resorted to adding a crontab entry to flush my mailq every 5 minutes in the meantime. -- Kevin J. Fedora power management

I have some laptops running F20/KDE which, among other purposes, are acting as gateways to a private network. Most of the time these laptops are unattended -- no one is logged into the console -- but the gateway function must continue to run so that remote users can reach the private network. So I need to prevent these laptops from going to sleep. It appears that KDE's power management function applies to the user logged into the console. If a user is logged in, I can easily prevent sleep. But if the user logs out or the laptop is booted by a remote user, no power management seems to be active and they eventually go to sleep. Is there a way to keep the power management function active even when no one is logged into the console? -- Dave Close

F19 install and custom / RAID partitioning

Hi folks. I'm building a F19 box to replace my dead Bacula server and I'm trying to emulate as close as possible the F17 install I did then. However, this install UI is different and I've got a small probem. I've got 2 x 3TG drives sda and sdb. I've selected both drives (sda defaulted to boot device) Selected Standard Partitioning I'm in manual partitioning have done 1) + Mount point = /biosboot capacity = 1MB got this bit by googling a previous error partition put on sda1 2) + Mount point = /boot capacity = 50GB Device type = RAID /biosboot is moved to sda2 3) + Mount point = SWAP capacity = 6GB Device type = RAID /biosboot is moved to sda3 4) + Mount point = / capacity = 100GB Device type = RAID /biosboot is moved to sda4 5) + Mount point = /var/bacula capacity = blank (default to remaining space) Device type = RAID At this point I press "Update settings" to store the details for the last partition. As soon as I press the button it goes wrong and either removes some of the partitions or all of them and I get the message Storage configuration reset due to unrecoverable error. Click for details On clicking I then get the message Can't have overlapping partitions. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to sort this.

Realtek chipsets are like D-Link chipsets. And it is hard to find the correct one. The page at wireless.kernel.org does not list the RTL8188SU chipset. I found (somehow) some time ago that the proper driver is the r8712u chipset. If you have it installed (which may take a download and copy to /lib/firmware etc. then the ASUS-N10 is recognized and the module loaded on insertion. Works like a charm, including when I tested at a friend's place where he has an N speed router. The only place which seems to list and cross-reference all of the Realtek chipset variants is here: https://wiki.debian.org/rtl819x which is based on, but extends the wireless.kernel.org page. I apologize if this is not Fedora-specific, but I've got a desktop question. When I want to save some text, I'll highlight it and hit ctl-c or to copy it or ctl-v to paste it. Is there anything analogous to "named registers" in vim that will allow me to copy into different buffers (or, in vim, registers) so I can grab and paste from multiple instances? If it makes a difference, I'm running Fedora 20 with KDE 4. billo

Affordable 802.11n USB dongle that IS supported in Fedora

I spent 30 min going through all the 'clearance' open boxes at MicroCenter today with my notebook, trying to see if any came up as supported. None did. I went to the section with the unopen items and found the Asus claiming Linux support. So much for that; looks like you have to build it yourself and hope for the best. So is there a USB 11n dongle that IS supported and can be had for < $20? Actually an external antenna is a plus as it will be on a server that at times will be a client and times an AP.

Hi I need to go inside a directory named <notebook-source>; but I am not able to do it. Using the command cd /.../notebook-source I get the output : "no such file or directory" ----------- I tried to go around to the problem using the command ls : if I use the command : <ls notebook* > (using the wildchar *) then I get the correct output: "notebook-source". but if I use the command : <ls notebook-source > then I get (again) the message " no such file or directory" Why this happen ? ===== Seem that the problem is connected with the use of the character "-" inside the name of the directory.... ; but I didn't know the character "-" is forbidden to form nane of the files or directories.. What is my problem? It is some thing that I dont know about the rules to form name of files and directories ? Regards thank you Angelo

Serviio 1.4.1.2: Some id3 tags don't display

Hello, Everyone I initially posted this question on the Serviio forum. But I did not get any responses, and I still am having the problem. The following email is re-constructed from my postings to the Serviio forum: Part 1: I am running Serviio 1.4.1.2 on a system with Fedora 20 Linux installed. My issue is that the id3 tags from SOME mp3 files don't display on my TV. Here is a step by step description of how Serviio behaves when the id3 tags load, and when they don't: Behavior when ID3 tags DON'T display: 1. Select mp3 file to play. 2. Wait a fairly long time for song to start playing. 3. Song starts playing, but... 4. No id3 tags display on the TV. Behavior when ID3 tags DO display: 1. Select mp3 file to play. 2. Song starts playing immediately. 3. id3 tags display on TV as they are supposed to. I don't have any issues with MP3's that I get from ripped CD's that I own. The only issue is with SOME mp3's that I purchase from AmazonMP3. I have discovered a workaround: 1. Remove offending MP3 files from media server. 2. Force Serviio to refresh itself. 3. Check log files to make sure that Serviio removed the offending files from it's database. 4. Remove ALL id3 tags from MP3 files. 5. Rename the files using the new id3 tags. 6. Put back on media server and let Serviio refresh itself. 7. Result? id3 tags display perfectly on TV. First I rename the files I removed from the media server to include all of the id3 tags that I delete. Then I fill the id3 tag fields from the file names, then rename according to my preferred style of renaming. The two id3 tag editors that I use on Fedora Linux 20 are Easytag 2.2.1 & Puddletag 1.0.4. The id3 tag libraries that Easytag and Puddletag use are as follows on my system: python-mutagen-1.20-6.fc20.noarch libid3tag-0.15.1b-17.fc20.x86_64 id3lib-3.8.3-31.fc20.x86_64 taglib-1.9.1-5.fc20.x86_64 Part 2: I just opened up, in a hex editor, two mp3 files that I purchased from AmazonMP3. Both files do not display the id3 tags on my TV. They start out like this: ID3.....PIPRIV.. and ID3.......PRIV.. Here is the first line of a MP3 that I purchased from AmazonMP3 where the id3 tag used to NOT display on my TV. I have since fixed the issue with this file using the method detailed in my original post on this subject: ID3......vTiT2.. Here is the first line in a hex editor, of an MP3 that I purchased from AmazonMP3 that has worked PERFECTLY from the moment that I put it on my media server: ID3......&TALB So far, the id3 tags that do NOT display properly in Serviio seem to have "PRIV" or "PiPRIV" on the first line when I open the offending MP3 files in a hex editor. Also, the first tag on the mp3's that I checked in a hex editor appears almost at the very top. So far with perfect consistency, the first tag on an offending MP3 file from AmazonMP3 starts at approximately line offset "0000:2020" Next time I purchase MP3's from Amazon, I will check them in a hex editor before I play them with Serviio, to see if I can predict if an MP3 will have it's id3 tags displayed correctly on Serviio. Part 3: I am still having this problem. I thought that I had fixed it the following way: 1. Scan all my MP3's using a command line program called "eyeD3": eyeD3 * | grep PRIV 2. If the above command showed any MP3's with the offending "PRIV" tag field, I would run the following in the appropriate directory: eyeD3 --remove-frame PRIV *.mp3 3. Sync my MP3's from their main location to my media server. 4. Voila! The tags were back! Until tonight. So, I checked the new offending files, and they had no PRIV tag frame. I then thought that maybe Serviio didn't see the changes because the time stamp did not change. So, I ran "touch" on all the offending MP3's that I discovered tonight. Synced them to the media server, made sure that Serviio updated the files appropriately, with the result that those files STILL have no tags... So, I am stumped. file system compatibility...

Hi , I need to use an USB Hard Disk as repository; that is a "subversion repository" that is used in a local network. This means (for me) that the data wrote inside the HD can be used, in case of emergency, bot on OS Linux both on OS Windows .... Actually in this Hard Disk (that have ntfs file system) are stored data writed from OS Windows XP; and I am not able to read (easily) this data in OS Fedora. Actually I can read only some directories there... : - $RECYCLED BIN - RECYCLER - System Volume Information As well it is not the best..., it is not very important for me to lose the data actually wrote in this Hard Disk, But I would be sure that IN THE FUTURE SHALL BE COMPOTIBILITY of usage between Fedora and Windows.. i.e. *I could indifferently use the Hard Disk with Fedora and with Windos..* *I think this if possible, using some File System that allow this possibility, by the creation of a special partition on the HD.* What I think is rigth ? Using wodim - get error opening /dev/sr0

I'm trying to use wodim to write or blank a cdrom. When I execute $ sudo wodim dev=/dev/sr0 blank=all I get the following error: Error trying to open /dev/sr0 exclusively (Device or resource busy)... retrying The same thing happens when I use K3B. It says it cannot get exclusive control over the device. I can't find any process which is using /dev/sr0. fuser returns nothing. Just would like to chime in that you can use the exfat filesystem which is supported by Windows and Linux. The Exfat filesystem addresses some of the limitations of the vfat filesystem. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExFAT

Broadcasts and netmask

I have a Fedora 20 machine which is receiving UDP broadcast packets at regular intervals on a high port. No program is presently listening for these packets. If I run, "tcpdump -iany port 29531", I see each of the packets arriving just as I expect. But if I then use Ncat as a surrogate for an application, "nc -lup 29531", I sometimes don't see anything! Why not? (More details below.) What obvious thing am I missing? The machine has ten Ethernet ports, two Broadcom BCM5716 and eight Intel 82576. The Broadcom ports are using the bnx2 driver, the Intel ports use the igb driver. Connecting the cable from the broadcast sender to any one of the ports, I get the exactly same behavior. Without assigning the port an address, tcpdump shows that the UDP broadcast packets are received but they are not forwarded to an application. But I don't understand why the drivers treat the broadcast differently based on the netmask. Of course, this behavior might not be unique to Fedora but that's the environment I'm using. RoR, apache, passenger deployment problems

I'm trying to deploy a sample ruby on rails application on Fedora 20. The application runs locally using WEBrick. I have the mod_passenger-4.0.18-4.fc20.x86_64 package and the associated ruby gems installed. I'm very new to this so I'm sure I'll be asking some stupid questions. The first thing I notice is complaints in /var/log/httpd/error_log when restarting apache with passenger setup. I've attached the relevant error_log content. I googled, but couldn't find a clear answer. Can someone help me out? Pete
