[FC8] ssh and CAC card???

From what I understood, the change to openssh listed in: rpm -q --changelog openssh |less as: "* Wed Jun 20 2007 Tomas Mraz <tmraz(a)redhat.com> - 4.5p1-7 - experimental NSS keys support - correctly setup context when empty level requested (#234951) " was supposed to allow the Common Access Card (CAC) to work with the shipped Fedora 8 ssh. This list's search engine not working?

Ever since I stumbled across this list, I seem to have major difficulties searching the archives. Say I want to see my posts to the list (they all have the same footer as below), I believe I could go to http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/ and enter "HaJo" as a search string. Searching in all sections, I get 0 results. Does the search engine ignore me by some reason? BTW -- I've been posting since about June, and when showing the archives sorted by author, I do find my posts. OK, not the most helpful to search for my own posts, but I do have the same issue when searching for given topics. Any other search engine out there indexing this list reliably? SATA optical drives

I'm currently running FC5, will probably upgrade to F7 in a couple of months. Unfortunately my CD/DVD rewriter appears to have died, before it's even seen a dual layer disk :'( SATA hard drives run without problems for me, but now that SATA optical drives are starting to appear in the shops, would it be OK to buy one of these and get rid of another wide ribbon cable? Is anybody already running them with Fedora? Thanks for any advice/experiences. Dave F

Changing date with procmail

Anyone know of a procmail recipe to change the date on incoming messages? If the date is in the future by more than 24 hours - I'd like to just change it to the current date. If the date is in the past by more than two weeks - I'd like to just change it to the current date. I'd like to do it in procmail - if someone knows how. I've done some searching, still have some to do. Found some stuff on extracting the date, but not on modifying it if necessary.

Hi, http://www.sysresccd.org/Download With the SystemRescueCd I backed up the /dev/sda6 partition in /mnt/backup/ naming "diskimage" After backing up operation the file has the automatic extension like "diskimage.000". Is this file ok to restore? If I name it "diskimage.gz" then it is automatically renamed with this extension "diskimage.gz.000" But here below http://www.sysresccd.org/Screenshots the file is name like this: "diskimage.pimg" Do I have to name with the .pimg extension during backup to restore correctly? And how can I restore it?

VPN options

I am planning on running a Virtual Private Network from my Fedora firewall out to a UML virtual colo (running RH9) at another site. That site will be the place I present services to the world; httpd, ssh, sftp, smtp. This is to comply with the "no servers" and dynamic ip restrictions on my Comcast connection to the net; if my firewall always drives an outbound connection to the colocation site, I am not worried about changes of ip address, and I am not opening any inbound ports. There are a number of options for the VPN - the most attractive are cipe ( http://sites.inka.de/sites/bigred/devel/cipe.html ) and FreeSwan ( http://www.freeswan.org/ ), though I am told that one can do all this through an ssh tunnel. I would rather have simple and secure than super-duper; I have plenty of bandwidth, and will send outbound http and smtp from the firewall, so the main bandwidth user will be incoming spam/b/b/b/b mail. Anyone have some experiences to share about setting up VPN? Is there anything about either cipe or FreeSwan that is likely to break with FC1 or FC2? Scriptlet errors during manual installation of Fedora 23

Hi, Because Anaconda doesn't support my usual partitioning scheme (root on Btrfs in LVM in LUKS in LVM in GPT, /boot on Btrfs, etc.), I created the entire layout manually and tried to install Fedora using dnf. The same layout works perfectly fine in ArchLinux. I basically followed this howto, with adjustments for s/yum/dnf/ and for EFI/GPT: http://dustymabe.com/2014/05/29/manual-linux-installs-with-funky-storage-co… The initial filesystem installation (dnf install -y --releasever=23 --installroot=/mnt/sysimage filesystem) already got a few glitches of this form: Non-fatal POSTIN scriptlet failure in rpm package filesystem This^^^ happened to roughly half of the installed packages. I tried to proceed with the rest (i.e., to install @core @standard kernel grub2 grub2-efi sihm grub2-tools), but it failed with scriptlet errors that prevented a few key packages from getting installed at all: error: %prein(selinux-policy-targeted-3.13.1-157.fc23.noarch) scriptlet failed, exit status 126 Error in PREIN scriptlet in rpm package selinux-policy-targeted Packages with those errors are reported as failed after the verify step. What I tried next: * setenforce 0 * upgrading the installation environment and/or the sysimage with dnf and rpm from rawhide * --releasever=22 instead of 23 * ...and checking for a few other common points with this bug: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1270663 * a plain sysimage directory with no predefined Btrfs subvolumes in it * unmounting, remounting, checking that everything has seclabel on, no weirdness in dmesg, etc. Well, nothing of the above helped; the error is still the same. How can I diagnose this? Where can I dig out the exact reason why the scriptlets are failing? Provided that Anaconda actually does some steps that I'm missing and can carry out the installation correctly, is there a way to *force* it to just accept whatever is mounted into /mnt/sysimage at the moment, without trying to make sense of it? I'm pretty sure dracut can handle my partition layout just fine, so the entire issue here is about getting the basic installation done somehow. Theoretically I could create a simple-and-stupid layout that Anaconda can handle, proceed with the installation and reshuffle the partitions afterwards, but that's sooo cumbersome that I thought I'd first ask whether someone knows a workaround to the scriptlet problems. Hi, my computer boot only in emergency mode ... Looking the journalctl (command journalctl -xb), I found (in thejournalctl ) these lines in red color : ATA2:00: link is slow to respond.... (and after..) ATA200: SRST failed (erro 16) That seem indicate that it is a problem to access the HDs.. I found a possible solution to the problem in this post: http://codeverge.com/opensuse.org.help.install/-solved-ata1-srst-failed-err… There is wrote that :...the problem can depend by the physic set up of the HD (as "master", "slave", "single drive", ...): this set up can be done by changing the position of a jumper on the HD... I know that, in the past time, the HDs had to be set physically in this way.., but recently I never heart anymore that the modern HD need this operation.. So actually I don't care anymore of the configuration of the HDs (my HD is Toshiba 1 TB that I bought few mounts ago). nc missing option -z

Hi, I used to use netcat to check if a particular host is up or if I have internet connection before I run a few scripts. I would use the -z option in particular. But now I see that has been removed: $ nc -z imap.gmail.com 993 && sync-my-email.sh ncat: invalid option -- 'z' Here is the excerpt from the old manual page: -z Specifies that nc should just scan for listening daemons, without sending any data to them. It is an error to use this option in conjunction with the -l option. Any ideas what happened to it? What can I use as replacement? Thanks for any ideas. -- Suvayu Open source is the future. F21: Thunderbird insists on calling Fedora list messages junk!

Good afternoon, Most messages received from this fedora list are labelled junk by Thunderbird. This is even though I whitelisted "From" = "users-request(a)lists.fedoraproject.org". Actually, I have this problem both in my Fedora-21 and my windows-7 systems. Any ideas? Surely messages from this list are not junk! thanks, Bill.

how to set 24-hour clock (military time) on Fedora 20 in KDE?

I modified it to above and removed ExtData1 reference and it worked. I tried to set the xtics manually and change them according to Marco's reference, but the graph did not refect all the games so I modified the data file and added the date and the opponent and then modified the range to prohibit the line going below and keep everything in quadrant I. If anyone has a nicer way to make the graph look better, or format it using something else please help. I would like for our athletes to see what we need to work on the Goal Differential and not allow too many goals against us. Issues with install F23 MATE desktop

I have a brand-new Dell Precision workstation, on which I'm trying to install Fedora 23 (with my preferred desktop environment, MATE), which is turning into the most frustrating Linux install I've experienced in a long time (and I've been using Linux since before Red Hat existed). I started with Fedora-Workstation-netinst-x86_64-23 on a thumb drive. I booted, selected automatic partitioning and MATE, and it started downloading RPMs. When it finished downloading, it rebooted. Apparently, there's a conflict between release and updates on who owns /etc/xdg/menus/mate-preferences-categoris.menu, and anaconda just crashes and reboots (not even a traceback) on an install transaction failure. After a few passes through that before I figured out anaconda was not going to install MATE (with frustrating waits for downloads each time), I gave up and did a minimal install. Then I did a dnf groupinstall MATE, and that downloaded all the RPMs, then gave me the error about the file conflict. I tried to exclude one of the choices, use --best, etc., and nothing would solve it. Also, when "dnf groupinstall foo" is run, even if it fails, dnf then thinks the group is installed (and so a repeated groupinstall does nothing). I had to do a groupremove first. I just manually installed the RPMs from the dnf cache to get around the MATE brokenness, and then got systemd to do a graphical boot. Now, when I get to the graphical login, my USB is dead. I can boot single-user mode and the keyboard works fine; as soon as the graphical login loads, USB appears dead (keyabord is like it is powered off, no Numlock, Capslock, etc.). Tried unplugging keyboard, moving it to different USB ports (directly on the computer instead of hub), etc. with no result. The fact that the keyboard works in single-user mode shows there's no hardware problem, Linux USB issue, etc. At this point, I guess I'll roll back and try Fedora 22. If I ever get a working desktop, I'll try to file some bugs I guess. I found a BZ about anaconda that appears to match my problem (1287841). That doesn't explain the MATE conflicts in the repos, dnf groupinstall fail, or disappearing USB though. -- Chris Adams <linux(a)cmadams.net>

Cannot access my phone storage from fc22

Developer option set. usb debugging enabled. yet, when I plug my phone to usb on laptop, laptop does not mount anything, nor does any icon appear on the panel as a result of plugging in. Also, the phone does not pop up a screen asking me to enable USB in data mode or any other mode. Any ideas?

XFCE power manager no longer turns off the monitor

At some point recently, my monitor stopped getting turned off after the prescribed period of inactivity. I'm using the XFCE power manager, and its settings remain untouched. Manually executing "xset dpms force off" turns the monitor off normally. "xset q" shows that everything appears to be in order: DPMS (Energy Star): Standby: 300 Suspend: 360 Off: 420 DPMS is Enabled Monitor is On So, what else can I check?

Looking for a printer

How to change id and group to the user

Dear Experts, as you probably know (from another thread) I've just installed Fedora 23 on my dell m6800 and I have a new problem. I have let the installer create my user and it has given it uid 1000 and gid 1000. This is the standard behavior and I'm used to change it by manually edit /etc/group and /etc/passwd but this time this behavior has broken my user. I can't enter at the kde login (before in the splash screen it was asking for the password of my user than asking for a password but no user was specified and I got a login erro when I use my passowrd). Also removing the user with userdel and readd it with useradd didn't solve the issue. The only fix I found was to reinstall the whole system. Scroll Bars not Working Properly in F22 Applications in KDE

I have an issue certain applications not displaying the scroll bars properly. I am using the upstream Nightly version of Firefox and the upstream Daily version of Thunderbird. Both of these display the vertical scroll bar permanently, but neither of them display the top and bottom arrows. Another application I have looked at is Gedit which only displays the vertical scroll bar when you mouse over it, but it doesn't display the top and bottom arrows either. I get these issues irrespective of what KDE theme I use. Looking at the KDE Settings App it displays the scroll bars with top and bottom arrows fine. The Kwin script to force window decorations on GTK+ apps is active. Does anyone have any ideas why the above mentioned applications don't show the arrows but the KDE Settings Application does show the arrows, and whether or not there is anyway to rectify it? From memory I did not have this issue in F21 and F22 was installed from scratch from the live DVD because the F21->F22 upgrade process does not work on my system (the upgrade process wants to run the install from the Grub menu and on my system my wireless network is not active at that point and cannot be made active because of required drivers). regards, Steve

Hi, I ran journalctl -b to see what is causing bumblebee to fail. I see the log is huge. There are thousands of line and the file is as big as 5.1 mb. I see a sendmail line over and over. I don't think I use sendmail or what installed it. F23 on Raspberry Pi 2

Hi, I was looking at how to get Fedora on an Rpi 2, but then I realised the latest Pidora version is an F20 based RC from 2014. Is this all we have? Maybe someone knows a way to install from the latest ARM images. The official ARM installer does not seem to support Rpi. gnome won't start

On my F22 system I typically use mate as my desktop environment. Occasionally I log out and try to login using gnome. It quickly comes up with a screen saying "Opps, something has gone wrong". If I try "gnome classic" instead, it takes a little longer and I get a flash of an new desktop before the "Opps" screen. After the failed login, I went debugging by logging into a tty terminal. Looking at ~/.xsessionerrors there are 4 lines of "stty: standard input: Inappropriate ioctl for device" and nothing else. I don't notice any errors in /var/log/Xorg.0.log*. If I try it logging in as a new user with gnome it starts up fine. If I remove ~/.gnome* and ~/.gconf* the problem still occurs. Any hints where to look? Jon -- Jon H. LaBadie jonfu(a)jgcomp.com

Fedora 23 KDE spin -- no desktop cube?

I just bought me a new laptop (HP envy) and installed Fedora 23 dual boot with Win 8.1. Everything works great, but there are a couple of things about the KDE installation that cause me a bit of a disappointment. 1) There's no desktop cube animation option. Is that a design/deployment decision, or is it an installation problem? Obviously, losing a bit of eye-candy is not the end of the world, but I'm a bit dissapointed. The other is an Activity thing that I'll ask about in a second post, so as not to mix topics. Thanks for any information -- a Google search didn't supply anything. billo

Firefox and gmail troubles

Fedora 23, Firefox 43.0, and 43.0.3. In the last couple of weeks I started to get this message often while in Gmail: Oops… the system encountered a problem (#007) - Retrying in 1s… Often this takes a lot more than 1s to recover. It always happens when sending emails, and the first attempt for an email always fails, clicking send again always succeeds. This happens in safe mode, and with a new test user login account (a whole new login environment), and it happens with multiple gmail accounts. If I reboot to OS X, and use Firefox 43, it never happens. So the network and hardware are identical, the only factor seems to be something unique to Fedora. There are no messages logged in the journal at this time. I've tried disabling firewalld, connecting to another network via openvpn+private tunnel, and disabling ipv6. No change. Any suggestions? In the meantime, I'm going to see if I can reproduce in vmm/kvm booting Fedora 23 live. This is really super annoying. -- Chris Murphy

Hi everyone, I'm trying to set up a private mirror with Fedora's mirrormanager. It seem I could successfully check in with the report_mirror script as mirromanager's web interface says Last Checked In: 2015-12-31 03:42:47.866562 for the site I'm interested in. I've got 87.159.31.184/32 and FedoraMirror.mooo.com (which resolves to that exact address) listed in site-local netblocks and the categories carried show a bunch of Fedora 23 stuff (complete list here: https://paste.fedoraproject.org/306101/ if anyone is interested). What I'd expect is https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/metalink?repo=updates-released-f23&arch=x… to list my mirror somewhere but unfortunately I only get the unsual public suspects. What am I missing? I just installed the Fedora23 KDE spin in a new laptop (HP envy). It has gone great except for a couple of small glitches. This glitch has to do with Activies. When I create a Widget in an activity, it sometimes disappears when I move it, and ends up in a different Activity. boot problem

I'm trying to get Fedora 23 to boot on a a system which will eventually have no monitor attached (will use a serial console). The system does have a graphics card in it (and was used for the initial install) the system now starts booting properly but fails almost immediately after re-sizing the screen from 80x24 to ??? to make matters even more complicated I am building the system on one machine and then plan on moving the disks to another system which will have a different video card (built in but not connected to a monitor) See below for the serial console output. I disabled the 'nomodeset' from the kernel command line and just before the GDM loads the OS and it will lock up and you can hear the fan blowing as if all the resources are being consumed. The only way around this is to power down the box, if I don't touch the kernel command line and let it boot, it will get to the GDM; however, each time I try to login it will come right back to the login screen, but I can go to another virtual console. Hi all, I'm running f23 with gnome3 desktop env. Having a weird problem if connecting with nxclient-3.5.0-7 to some remote linux server (for example scientific linux) running nxserver-3.5.0 or freenx-0.7.3-9.4.el6: My problem: if configuring the nxclient when accessing the remote machine (remote: gnome, but not gnome3, and, this is important, full screen), then the upper part of the remote display (menu bar: unusable,...) is not usable (remains insensitive) . It seems the local gnome 3 bar (at the screen's top) inhibits the use of this remote area of the screen). I think it's a gnome3 problem, because if running lxde as local desktop, then the described problem disappears. So my question: anybody has similar problem and has a solution? Hi, I have a fedora22 system with munin-2.0.25 and have a few modules that I just can't get to work. They all respond with some form of "permission denied". I have another virtually identically fc22 munin-2.0.25 system with the same config files and it's not having a problem. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Here is where it is stuck; I am using the Fedora 23 x86_64 workstation; are there any kernel argument that I can use to fix this so that I am able to boot and eventually install Fedora 23? People, I have an old netbook that I have just installed F23 i386 XFCE Workstation on that I want to use (as lightly loaded as possible) as a remote webcam. Since I need to be able to reboot it and have the network come back up with wlan0 working, it appears I have to use the old "network" system instead of Network Manager (NM requires a login to activate wlan0?). So I am doing this: systemctl stop NetworkManager systemctl disable NetworkManage systemctl enable network systemctl start network but network doesn't start and doing: systemctl status network gives lots of lines like this: . . . RTNETLINK answers: File exists Googling finds this problem all over the place - especially with old versions of Fedora - but I can't find a fix for my particular situation. Strange sendmail behaviour

I am trying to change my sendmail configuration to deliver all "user unknown" emails to a specific account (baduser). I added the DL definition to sendmail.mc and generated test.cf. Then I tested this new config using: echo who | sendmail -v -Ctest.cf noone and the email was correctly delivered to the defined account. I then renamed test.cf to sendmail.cf (in /etc/mail) and retested with: echo what | sendmail -Csendmail.cf noone and again the email was delivered to the baduser account. Happy with this, I then restarted sendmail (via systemctl) and sent yet another email to an invalid account. Instead of the email being delivered to baduser, I received a 550 5.1.1 user unknown reject email. What have I missed here. Windows 7 to Windows 10 in a KVM success!

I've been running a Windows 7 KVM virtual machine for a while with a Fedora 22 host, and I found lots of conflicting info on the web about the possibility of installing the Windows 10 upgrade in a KVM. After taking great care to preserve the original Windows 7 image file, I gave the upgrade a whirl and it seems to have worked OK for me. People, I am interested to see if it is possible to boot on an existing disk - say /dev/sda ("A") - and then manually create everything required on a second disk - /dev/sdb ("B") eg: - create the partition table and partitions on B - dd the existing boot track(s) from A to a file and then dd that to B - or create it from scratch somehow? - rsync the the first level directories into the appropriate places on the new drive and partitions (maybe by temporarily booting on a Live USB so we are not copying from a running system?) If this is possible, what else would need to be done on B so that when drive A is removed, the remaining B (the new "A") drive will be able to boot and run normally? Thanks! Dear Fedora Experts, I' ve recently bought a new Dell Precision m6800 and today I was trying to install Fedora 23 in dual boot with windows 7 (this was the OS originally on the machine). I' ve run the installer from the live CD and after a couple of wrong attempts I successfully finished the installation process without errors or at least apparently without errors. recent apache timeout changes?

Anyone know if the default values for timing out recently changed in some httpd update on fedora? I used to be able to "stream" recordings to MX Player on my tablet by just providing the video files as http links. Sometime in the last few weeks though, MX Player started cutting off the recording after about 10 minutes (as though it believed it hit the end). I have just found every apache directive with timeout and keep alive in the name and changed them all to huge values, and MX Player is no longer having a problem, so one of them must have changed default values. Just wondering if anyone knows which one (out of nothing more than idle curiosity).

alt + above_tab changes work-spaces, how to disable?

Hi all, With Fedora 23 using the "Power Alt+Tab" extension, <alt> + <~> and <super> + <~> (~ == 'above_tab'), gnome cycles through the work spaces instead of the other windows in the active application. This wasn't the case in Fedora 22. Does anyone know how to disable the workspace cycling? I tried looking in dconf-editor -> org > gnome > desktop > wm > keybindings without luck. I am not sure how to look into how extensions work, and I realize this might be an issue with the extension instead of gnome itself. If that is the case, any pointer on how to look into extensions would be much appreciated, too. Thanks for any help! Using Virtualbox in an updated F23 I've installed VM's for Fedora, Centos, and Scientific Linux. Fedora 21 xfce live because I happened to have it handy, the others from the DVD iso's. Fedora21 boots and runs as expected. the others boot and run with a text screen but startx reports "command not found" and a ping to other than localhost, reports network unreachable. Fedora 23 and 4K monitors?

Does anyone have Fedora 23 working with a 4K monitor? Last week I got an Asus PB287Q monitor, but got bit by the "hardware loses signal when monitor goes into sleep" issue. I'm returning that monitor and would like to get another one, but am hoping to find a good success story. I'm running Fedora 23 with a GeForce 750 Ti card using the NVidia drivers. Does anyone have a working 4K setup with this or similar hardware? Thanks, -jdm

I noticed mlocate updatedb is not running. I believe there should be mlocate.cron installed into /etc/cron.daily repoquery reports no such file. How do I get fedora's version of mlocate package to run updatedb daily? Why isn't it installed this way?

command line ogg123 in Fedora 23 does not exist

Dear folks, I installed Fedora 23 and copied some old ogg vorbis files I had around. I wanted to play them(without a gui), amorok plays them, but prefer to use command line. Can't install mplayer as dont have working internet ATM on this machine :( . I did a $ which ogg123 and it returned no ogg123 in .... I tried playing them with amorok and it plays fine, but I would prefer the old way to play the files. Which package do I need to install to have this functionality? Best Regards, Antonio A. Users cannot log in using sddm on Fedora 23

Hello! After a Fedora 23 installation, users can't log in with sddm. A "login failed" message is displayed by sddm, sometimes preceded by a short switch to the tty and back. Users can log into a text console just fine. Also starting a Plasma desktop using startx works perfectly fine. Because sddm's logs report helper failures with codes 2 and 15, I tried this: # cp -a /usr/libexec/sddm-helper /usr/libexec/sddm-helper-binary # cat > /usr/libexec/sddm-helper <<-WRAPPER #!/bin/bash strace -f /usr/libexec/sddm-helper-binary "$@" 2>/tmp/sddm WRAPPER Here's the entire strace output obtained from a login attempt using the wrapper above: https://andrej.podzimek.org/dell-strace-0.txt The strace dump shows (among other glitches) something like a file descriptor leak. Also tried to do setenforce 0 and that didn't help either. :( Last but not least, rebooting with SELinux in permissive mode does away with the EPERM error, but sddm logins hang forever, with no chance to retry. I looked at recent sddm bugs such as this one: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1265813 But I don't think other sddm issues could be directly related, because the failure pattern is different, i.e., I can't see any segfaults here and my user IDs are in the correct range (uid 1001 in the attached log). :( What's wrong here? The continuous crippling of Fedora LiveCDs by removing usefull stuff for no apparent reason

Once upon a time, I believe it was Fedora 17 or Fedora 19, I was a happy camper. I used to download a Fedora LiveCD, and it included everything I needed for functional work on a otherwise Windows netbook. I just booted off the USB Flash Drive, and off I went to do my daily online chores like E-Mail, twitter, and ocassional image editing via my favorite small image editor (Java Image Editor). That was because OpenJDK 7 was included in the LiveCD image. This served multiple purposes: 1. Leaving the Windows partition unchanged 2. Not losing space on the small HDD with a Linux install 3. Not leaving my files behind on the system 4. Making an effort to put my data files on the Cloud or LAN network attached storage, NOT the individual system's HDD. Suddenly (I don't remember which release, but you can check the mailing list archives for my rant on the matter) OpenJDK binaries were removed from the live CD so I could no longer "java -jar JavaImageEditor.jar" nor could I use JNLP to launch desktop Java apps. I came to the list at the time to rant, and if I remember correctly the answer was that OpenJDK was removed from the LiveCD due to space constraints, and that it was a real challenge to keep everything to still fit into a CD image. Well, nowadays the Fedora 23 Mate-Compiz LiveCD I'm using is well above the 700MB CD-R limit, and I'm saving the LiveCD image to a 4GB pen drive anyway, yet not only OpenJDK 7 is not there -it should be OpenJDK 8 by now, by the way-, but also other useful stuff -native Linux binaries, command line utils that are a must-have- are also removed for no apparent reason. Case in point: I booted off the LiveCD the other day needing to do a quick change to a LAN router I have at home, and which provides access to the LAN side via TELNET. Well, guess what? there's no telnet in the LiveCD. But it is in the repos. I did a yum install telnet and found it only uses 76 kbytes. So telnet is not there to save 76 kbytes off the livecd image size. Wow. But the plot tickens. I wanted to download a mirrorr of a subsection of a web site to another usb flash drive using wget, using the wget -m -np -k -c syntax I know and love, and found .... WGET is not there either. Since I have learned that the Fedora community is quite hostile to any kind of complaint ("it's as-is because we-know-better and you-re-surely-doing-things-wrong" or "why-do-you-want-to-do-that-in-the-first-place" or "why-dont-you-just-install-the-full-fedora-instead-of-booting-off-a-LiveCD-from-a-Flash-Drive"), my hopes of this being "fixed" (openJDK being reinstated into the LiveCD image, along with telnet and wget), I think I'll end up taking things into my own hands and "fixing" the LiveCD images. So, is there an up-to-date tutorial out there on how to add stuff from the repos of a Fedora distro repos into the LiveCD image so the packages are available when LiveCD boots? Thanks in advance. No Bluetooth mouse in sddm before first login

Hello, In Fedora 23, my Bluetooth mouse works fine in KDE. However, it doesn't work in sddm before the first user logs in. It works afterwards and keeps working even after the first (or second or whichever) user logs out. The very first login without a mouse is quite an inconvenience. Any ideas what could be wrong? The same thing works perfectly fine in Arch -- the mouse works from the very beginning, once it's paired by a user in the KDE Bluetooth GUI, there's a bunch of metadata stored somewhere in /var about the pairing and the mouse can easily reestablish its connection, no matter if users are logged in or not. What can be different on Fedora? SELinux? And why does the mouse magically start working as intended once the very first user logs in? Just abou tany debugging tips would be helpful. (Looking at .xsession-errors for sddm/root/user and logs from bluettothd, sddm and X.org didn't yield anything eye-opening thus far.) Cheers, Andrej

Installing F22: MUST format root?!?!?!

I bought a 32gb class 10 sd card to run Fedora on a laptop where I don't want to touch the hard drive. After a bit of reading it seems it's a good idea to make sure the partition and filesystem are setup to get the most out of it (mainly around block side and erase boundaries) So I booted to Fedora 22 Workstation and before running the installer setup a /boot and "/" partition and formatted them. Now when I'm trying to configure disks it's telling me that "You must create a new file system on the root device." WTF?!? So what if I want to format the partition with specific options? Hi there, Can anyone else confirm this bug?. In Fedora 23 Mate-Compiz, when using FF 41.0.1 to view a JPEG file that has been scaled down automatically, when positioning the mouse cursor over the image, on the Windows platform the mouse cursor changes to a magnifying glass to show the user that the image can be zoomed in. In this linux, it doesn't. Can someone else confirm so I can file a bug report if not already reported? Thanks! Hi, I would appreciate a little help please. I am building the kernel with the following commands: fedpkg clone -a kernel cd kernel git checkout -b f23 --track origin/f23 fedpkg local and this builds a 4.2.8-300 release, however I need to build a 4.2.7-300 release which fedora is currently running on. how would I alter my command to achieve this. thanks for help,

problems with kde

Dear Fedora Experts, I'm a proud user of Fedora (currently 20) Linux on a Dell Laptop since 6 years. A couple of days ago without any real reason something broke up (the only thing happened is a write error but after that it worked fine) and I get serious problems in login into my KDE account. It takes half an hour and after that I'm in a crippled system. Each command I type gives as a reply "no more processes." Also menus and windows are quite unresponsive. Today after many desperate attempts I logged as root on KDE (I know this is something to avoid) but with the root account everything is working fine. I got into in few seconds and any command works as expected. So I suspect that something happened to my user, so I removed the .local configuration without any luck. I would also send you some logs but I can't imagine what could be useful. Anyone can help me to solve this issue? Thank you in advance Walter --

I have an Nvidia card and use the proprietary driver, so I've blocked updates to X for the time being until RPMfusion gets the new kmod module for Nvidia version 352.63. In any case, my current X server is xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.17.4-1.fc22.x86_64. Rebooting with kernel-4.2.6-301.fc23.x86_64 works. poc

yum configure to only download one package at a time

Hello, I am trying to upgrade my system and through our corporate firewall/network filters/etc, the bandwidth is limited. Today while doing an upgrade, yum was downloading five packages at a time. Due to the limits, I was running into a under X bytes for 60 seconds restart. The limit is such that when there are large packages (eclipse) it gets stuck restarting each package over and over until it has run out of mirrors. I read through the yum.conf man and I cannot find a way to tell yum to only download a single package. This is on a f20 system and I am trying to get to F23 but I cannot get fedup on f20 to work through our corporate firewall and dnf won't play. I am working on the problem I asked about earlier as this is the first time I had a few days to work on this. fedora-upgrade is the command that I am using. Robin

rpmfusion updates-testing repos enabled in Fedora23

Hi All I recently did a fresh install on Fedora 23 on a laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon 3rd edition) I followed up the install by installing the rpmfusion repos. I simply ran the command from the rpmfusion site to enable rpmfusion-free-updates and rpmfusion-nonfree-updates However today I noticed that the rpmfusion-free-updates-testing and rpmfusion-nonfree-updates-testing repos are also enabled. I thought the testing repos were for packages still in testing mode, thus if I want a more stable system they should be disabled. Should I leave the testing repos enabled? Has the rpmfusion repos changed such that I should want this? Thanks in advance

# systemctl enable rc-local The unit files have no [Install] section. They are not meant to be enabled using systemctl. Possible reasons for having this kind of units are: 1) A unit may be statically enabled by being symlinked from another unit's .wants/ or .requires/ directory. 2) A unit's purpose may be to act as a helper for some other unit which has a requirement dependency on it. 3) A unit may be started when needed via activation (socket, path, timer, D-Bus, udev, scripted systemctl call, ...). So, what does a user do in order to make the system start (execute) /etc/rc.d/rc.local at (or shortly thereafter) boot up??

VirtualBox 5.0.10 network problem

I have the Oracle version of VBox (VirtualBox-5.0- 5.0.10_104061_fedora22-1.x86_64) and it usually doesn't give any issues, but now (under F23) my Windows 7 guest has no network access. I have the appropriate VBox extension installed, and have shutdown and restarted the guest VM, but to no avail. My guest network is Bridged on virbr0. Any hints would be appreciated. poc

F23 weird auth problems

I just updated my work desktop to F23 from F22. Everything looked good but then I realized some of the shares are not mapping. They are CIFS shares and all common to a single EMC filer. The weird part is that I have a share mounted on a different EMC filer that is working fine from my fstab file. On a side not and not sure it is related but Lotus Notes is also showing some weird issues (outside the normal ones) where I can get into my mail but when I try to send I get a "You are not authorized to perform that operation" and then the path to my mailbox on the server. Possibly unrelated to the CIFS issue butn ot really sure. Has anyone else seen this or know a change that may have affected it? I have already downgrade the cifs-utils package back to F22 with change.

During a netinstall, if the power goes out while downloading the packages -- that would require me to go to the location. So I am trying to use a local OS tree for the install. This will reduce the risk from power outage. The documentation says the following: |harddrive| Install from a tree or full installation ISO image on a local hard drive. The tree or ISO image must be on a file system which is mountable in the installation environment. Supported file systems are |ext2|, |ext3|, |ext4|, |vfat|, or |xfs|. |install| |harddrive --partition= | --biospart= [--dir=]| |--partition=| Partition to install from (such as |sdb2|). |--biospart=| BIOS partition to install from (such as |82p2|). |--dir=| Directory containing the installation tree or ISO image. I only have one drive in the computer: /dev/sda. When I use: |harddrive --partition=/dev/sda2 --dir=/path/os| The target mount points are: sda1 is mounted as / sda2 is mounted as /home The errors are that the drive is not found for install and os tree also fails. I have a LaserJet 1300 printer that connects via a Belkin parallel port-to-USB connector. When I send a document to the printer, half the time it prints without hesitation; other times it stalls until I disconnect and re-connect the USB cable. dnf errors on update

Having trouble trying to update Fedora 22 this morning. [root@localhost frankzen] # dnf update Failed to synchronize cache for repo 'rpmfusion-nonfree-updates-testing' from 'http://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/mirrorlist?repo=nonfree-fedora-updates-testing…': Cannot prepare internal mirrorlist: Curl error (7): Couldn't connect to server for http://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/mirrorlist?repo=nonfree-fedora-updates-testing… [Failed to connect to mirrors.rpmfusion.org port 80: Connection timed out], disabling. This is followed by similar errors on every repo. I tried ' dnf clean all ' but that didnt help. Is this just my problem or is it more wide spread ? Thanks

VNC and sound

I am running Fedora 22 on a machine that is off in a closet and am using VNC to access it from a machine at my desk. I followed the instructions in System Admin guide chapter 8: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/22/html/System_Administrators_G… I successfully got Tiger VNC server working. it was quite easy. Cudos to everyone involved to make that so simple. My VNC client is Windows TigerVNC version 1.5. I don't seem to get sound. It doesn't seem to come out on my VNC client or on the VNC server's sound card. My remote machine is close enough that I could run a wire from it's sound card to the speakers on my desk if that is easier. But, right now I can;t get the sound to come out the VNC server sound card. Any pointers or recommendations are appreciated. Thanks Chris Kottaridis

Fedora 23 It has been since a few eeeks now upgrading filesystem-3.2-32.fc23.x86_64 to filesystem-3.2-35.fc23.x86_64 fails. LibreOffice 5.0.3.2 - Slow response time

Everyone, I have been having problems with LibreOffice since Fedora 22 being slow to the point that it is easier to use LibreOffice on one or our FC20 machines. I currently have a new install of F23, with a good processor and 24 gigs of memory and was hoping the problem was fixed, but it is not. I have increased the memory that LibreOffice uses in the "General" tab, but this does not seem to make a difference. The biggest problem with F23 LibrOffice is when a cut and paste process is performed. Has anyone else had this problem? Any Suggestions? Greg Ennis

Black screen and no response after fedup update to 22?

I've had this happen on two older notebooks recently that were running Fedora 21 just fine. Did an update on one using fedup to 22, and process went thru with no issues, and the login screen would come up, but after entering the password, the screen would go blank except for the mouse pointer that would move around, but nothing else. Couldn't even get a terminal window (Ctrl-Alt-F?) at that point. Was able to hard reboot, and without attempting to login, was able to get a terminal window to open. Tried a number of things, but the final thing that seemed to make it work was diabling gdm.server after downloading lightdm and making it the active service. But since I had done a number of things, wasn't 100% sure that was it. Just did the update on another older notebook on Saturday, and got the same black screen and no response after trying to login. Did just the hard reboot, and opened a terminal window. Installed lightdm, and did the switch to lightdm instead of gdm, and rebooted the system, and again the screen Fedora 22 came up normall. Windows 10 virtio drivers?

On my fedora 22 box, I have a Windows 7 KVM with virtio drivers for disk and network and qxl and spice for video. It works really well, but of course it keeps badgering me to upgrade to Windows 10. Are there virtio drivers available for Windows 10 yet? The page at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Windows_Virtio_Drivers still talks like Windows XP is likely to be running. Is there a guide anywhere for how to get the Windows 10 update to actually install properly inside a KVM? (I can find lots of pages describing how it doesn't work :-). Naturally whatever I wind up doing, I'll be saving a copy of the disk image from Windows 7 so I can easily revert back.

I see kernel 4.3.1 has been officially released: http://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/1512.1/01644.html Will it show up in the repos soon for fedora 23 (or 22)? (I'd really like to have the bugfix is is supposed to include for intel video).

Unknown user 'setroubleshoot'

Hi, I have some problem to boot my fedora. Those problems was come up with an upgrade to the last version. The following is one of the error I find on messages log. As I understand I need of the setroubleshoot user on passwd... I have reinstalled some packages about setroubleshoot but none has added that user to the passwd file. F23 problem with mercurial and SSL

Hi Since I have upgraded to Fedora 23, I am unable to communicate with the remote mercurial repo that I work from. All the local commands I have tried work fine, and I am even able to clone my local repo to another machine, but everytime I try to communicate with the base repo, I get the following error message: abort: error: [SSL: PARSE_TLSEXT] parse tlsext (_ssl.c:590) I can still communicate with the base repo from a RHEL 6 machine, so it is possible to get work done, but it is very clumsy. F23 Server: unexpected network problem

I Installed F23 Server with static address but after updating that it got an automatic one. Why that? I consider that extremely dangerous. That was verified and happened on different hardware boxes. Hi, I got a file with suffix .pat (the extension is a Pattern Image file) and, for what I could know, this kinde of files are used with photoshop... II haven't photshp, so I looked for knowing how to open this file, and the only suggestion that I found was to try (in Linux environment) with GIMP. Hello, I haven't been using Fedora for a while (2+ years) and yesterday I installed fedora on dad's computer and see that they replaced yum with dnf. Now the question is why was this done ? MP4 video on F23

Since updating to F23 I've been unable to view MP4 videos (mostly H264 encoded). I know this is a proprietary format but it's what's out there and what people tend to send when sharing in emails (from non-Linux machines as a rule). The message from vlc (for example) is: Codec not supported: VLC could not decode the format "h264" (H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10)) Usually the audio track is supported and plays, but no picture. No doubt the answer is going to be "install gstreamer-ugly-whatever" from RPMfusion, but I've done all that and still nothing. I didn't have this problem under F22 (or earlier) so I have to wonder if something hasn't been updated, but anyone with a solution is welcome to comment. xfce without a mouse

Hi, So I have only a bluetooth mouse, and GNOME lets me navigate by keyboard only to get to Settings well enough I can then pair with the mouse. I can't figure out how to do this at all on xfce (granted this is Fedora 20 because that's the build Intel is using for their CPU diagnostic tool). Any suggestions? -- Chris Murphy

Bluetooth keyboards

I currently have a problem where bluetooth keyboard pair, but don't work. Other bluetooth devices work. USB keyboards work. I've tried four different keyboards from four different manufacturers, so I'm pretty sure it's a local problem. I've tried different kernels with the same result. So I think that this is in bluez. It used to work when F23 went live, so I assume it's a recent update problem. I've tried both X11 and Wayland to try and differentiate between xinput/wayland events. Both exhibit the problem. The keyboards do pair, and they do need a passcode when pairing, and entering that passcode does work, so the keyboards are working. After pairing, they show up as connected. They just do nothing. No HID input. If anyone can help me tracking it (or even finding debug info), I'd appreciate it. I don't know where next to look.

F23 Installer does not recognize any storage devices

Hello I try to install F23 onto a predefined but unused md device. I read about problems with the workstation image, so I used server-netinstall on a physical cd. The install target box stays gray with warning sign, even if /tmp/storage.log is about 160k bytes and /proc and /sys is populated. Is there any way to work around this problem? my server is stuck i did: dnf system-upgrade download --release=23 dnf system-upgrade reboot now the last message i get on console is: started rolekit - role server Don't get the usual, updating various packages...tried reboot into recovery mode and it just does the same, can seem to get it to forget the upgrade now. Is there a switch or setting to start over? any help would be great, last resort is to reinstall fc23. thanks!

SElinux issue

Somehow my SElinux config has gotten messed up. When I try to install a module I get the following error: libsepol.context_from_record: type httpd_prewikka_rw_content_t is not defined (No such file or directory). libsepol.context_from_record: could not create context structure (Invalid argument). libsemanage.validate_handler: invalid context system_u:object_r:httpd_prewikka_rw_content_t:s0 specified for /usr/share/prewikka/htdocs/generated_images [all files] (Invalid argument). libsemanage.dbase_llist_iterate: could not iterate over records (Invalid argument). semodule: Failed! The httpd_prewikka_rw_content_t does not exist. The directory does exist, but it doesn't matter whether the directory exists or not I still get the error. The problem entry is in /etc/selinux/targeted/contexts/files/file_contexts.local:/usr/share/prewikka/htdocs/generated_images system_u:object_r:httpd_prewikka_rw_content_t:s0 I have tried using the various selinux tools to correct the problem without success. My questions are: 1) Can I manually edit the file_contexts.local file and remove the problem entry? 2) Is this sufficient? 3) Do I need to run anything after I remove the entry to get SElinux to work correctly? Can't switch wireless keyboard layout without plugging wired keyboard

Ok, so this is a really strange problem and I don't even know where to dig, where to submit bug or anything. I had my old Mitsumi USB keyboard that I switched to the shiny new Logitech K270 wireless keyboard. The thing is that after bootup keyboard layout switch is not working. Buttons are working, I double checked with evtest. I tried with Alt+Shift, Right control, Right Alt. BUT as soon as I plugged my old wired keyboard and switch layout with it, my new keyboard starts switching layouts like it always was. I can unplug old keyboard and enjoy layout switching. I can provide any logs, upgrade or downgrade. I really can't understand what's happening and where should I go - to X11 devs, fedora, systemd or Logitech. Hope somebody can point me to right direction. Alex

alias command in a .spec file

To build successfully a rpm package from my .spec file I need alias a command. The alias command is not taken into account in the .spec file. I can of course run it in my shell before the build, but I would like to include the process in .spec file. The link[1] is confusing. Something like: pm alias --MyAlias --define '_MyProg !#:+' ? Or the popt alias setting ? Define a global variable like MyAlias= MyProg ? Cups fails with "Filter failed"

Hi, I'm trying to print a test page to my new network printer (HP Laserjet Pro MFP 126nw) but it keeps failing with the message: stopped "Filter failed". systemctl says I should look in /var/log/cups/error_log for more details, but my error_log is empty, and the last modified time is from last year! So I changed LogLevel to debug in cupsd.conf and restarted the service. This prints all sorts of debug messages to the journal, although none to error_log. Strangely enough, the journal still says: [Job 325] Job stopped due to filter errors; please consult the error_log file for details. I have checked all the "common cures" I found on the Internet, size of /var/spool/cups (<700k for me), device permissions (doesn't apply as I'm printing over the network). I have always printed over the network (to other printers), so I'm not sure what is going wrong this time. Any thoughts what is the problem? Any ideas I could try? Disabling CPU throttling on fedora22

Hi, I have a fedora22 SuperMicro system operating as a mail server that has no need to have the CPU throttled. I'm having trouble figuring out how to disable the throttling. There also doesn't appear to be any recent threads discussing this previously. Firefox and Fedora 23

I think I'm running into this: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=439598 Whenever I restart firefox the language used for spelling reverts back to the previous value of English(Malawi) even though I change it to en-US. Also when restarting Firefox I get the message saying that I haven't restarted firefox in a while and it asks me if I want to reset my configuration. It doesn't matter if I say yet or no the message comes up next time I restart. Suggestions or am I better off switching to another browser (Chrome) or installing Firefox from a different location? Hello, I do not use much my speaker. It seems since I update from fc21 to fc22 I lost the sound! Actually, the test of the speakers is OK, but still no sound from an application. I have been to sound: application alsa plug-in is ON Output: the sound device is LineOut: Built-in Audio, I only have the choice of Analog Stereo Output. How can I fix the issue ? Hi, Some time ago, circa May 2015, there was a long thread called "Biting the Bullet" [1] where some others complained about the lack of pdftk on F21 and later. (This complaint also manifested itself sometime later.) In response, and with both general and more specific help from those more experienced, I was able to put together an RPM for pdf-stapler as an alternative to pdftk. I submitted to a black hole called Fedora packaging where there was some churn, some more suggestions (a few contradicting the other) which I duly implemented but no one actually able to move the process forward. However, it sits here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1234210 unassigned. It has passed through rpmlint (no errors, only a few nonsensical spelling warnings) and whatever else it was supposed to pass as per packaging guidelines. So also is the case of sylfilter which I packaged separately, and no one has even bothered to comment on: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1265685 Now, I understand that quality control is an important part of the Fedora packaging which is what makes it a good product (and I am no great RPM-maker, witness my questions on the subject), and there is a dearth of enough people eligible to assign to, but surely, there must be some better way to handle new proposed packages. For instance, if automated setups clear a package, perhaps it would be better to move it to the top of the list or even clear it for testing and see what happens? Otherwise, there will be frustration and the pool of packagers will not grow. Not to mention that if packages sit like this this for months before being acted upon, then the original packager will have lost context and memory and moved on (certainly it would be frustrating and more onerous on him/her than it would be if it were acted upon sooner). Otherwise, people will move on. I don't need these packages because I have them for myself. Indeed, I could be more sloppy in creating these rpms (or not even bothering to do so), but the reason for putting this out is benefit to the community which has also benefited me/us. This is especially true for niche packages such as sylfilter, etc which may not even have much users who would be willing to test it. I have some experience with submitting packages for R. My experience there is that if it passes all the tests, it is by and large through, but if it does not (surprisingly, Macs are the killers in most cases), it is not, and feedback is fairly quick. Perhaps, it would be worthwhile to think about how to streamline the process. At this point, I am fully expecting the familiar notice for EOL eventually. After Mate upgrade panel disappears.

DNF upgraded my Fedora 22 machine tonight....mostly the newest 1.12 version of Mate. Now my bottom panel has disappeared. HTOP says mate panel is loaded but nothing is visible on the screen. Any suggestion on how I can debug this latest improvement :) Thanks

It's 2015, and OOM handling still sucks

I have a pretty nice workstation, with 8 cores and 32G RAM. A stupid little python program just killed it by consuming all the memory, driving it into swapping hell. I couldn't even ssh into it - I started up ssh and went for coffee. On return I still didn't have a prompt. Had to power cycle it. This is F23, everything is setup default regarding kernel memory policies, etc. So, can we configure things to give a better experience? Can we make this default?

Changing systems

Hi all and Happy Thanksgiving, Could I take 2 HD's out of 1 computer, move them to a different computer, obviously having to reinstall grub and such, would they work without having to do much of anything else? I know I have to make sure the correct one is booted up and how they are connected, and the BIOS sees them correctly. Anything else to know first? Appending the file modified date to the file name

I am pulling a bunch of recordings off my android phone. I found simple-mtpfs to be able to use 'cp -a' to actually copy the files and preserve their date information. Now I want to rename these files, which are all lectures to have the date of creation/lastmodified in the file name. All my searching has only found how to put the current date into the file name, I can'f find anything on using the actual file date. Can anyone point me to how to do this?

California not authenticating to google calendar after F-23 upgrade.

Well, I discovered a kind of big issue with 23 after all ... My google account dissipated from California. When I try to add it, it wont authenticate anymore and gives me a message about a resource on Google's web site not being available anymore. Unfortunately, the screen wont let me copy and paste it. I'm using the XFCE spin, but this worked perfectly fine in F-22. The caldav calendar I have configured is fine.
