are you talking about application/program icons or active window title?
i am taking this "off-list" because we are getting "off subject".
which might be a good idea before Matthew "drops by".

F21 user core files
by Michael Eager
I'm unable to obtain a user-readable core file from a user
application under Fedora 21. The core files are being saved
under /var/lib/systemd/coredump, and are owned by root.
None of the configuration changes I've made to
/etc/systemd/coredump.conf appear to make any difference.
Has anyone else seen this problem? Does anyone have
a fix? Is there an open bug report?

F20: YUM - failure: repodata/repomd.xml from updates
by M. Fioretti
Greetings,
I have, on a Fedora 20 x86_64 box, "yum update" failing with
lots of messages like the one in the subject, and others like:
ftp://ftp.ciril.fr/pub/linux/fedora/linux/updates/20/x86_64/repodata/repomd.xml:
[Errno -1] repomd.xml does not match metalink for updates
Trying other mirror.
###################################################
This started happening to me yesterday, when I used bleachbit
(yes, even on the yum stuff in /var/) to make space on a
practically full root partition. However, I just discovered
somebody else reporting the SAME problem TODAY
(give or take a repo or two) here:
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=304378
but there is no mention of bleachbit there. "yum clean all" doesn't
change anything.
Earlier reports of similar problems turned out to be due to temporary
problems
in the repos themselves:
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=291838
Is it the same today, or something else? What now?
TIA for any advice,
Marco

WiFi restoration
by Timothy Murphy
One room in my house is at the boundary of WiFi reception,
and WiFi occasionally fails there.
When this happens it is nearly always restored by re-booting.
Re-starting NetworkManager never does the trick, however.
Is there any other step I could take, short of re-booting?
I'm running Fedora-21/KDE.

dnf metalink issue: Fedora Updates repo
by Steven P. Ulrick
Hello, Everyone
If I run "dnf upgrade" with the "metalink" line uncommented in
"/etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo", the result is as follows:
[root@afolkey2 ~]# dnf upgrade
rpm.livna.org for 20 - x86_64 3.8 kB/s
| 3.4 kB 00:00
Fedora 20 - x86_64 - VirtualBox 168 kB/s
| 52 kB 00:00
Open source multiplatform video transcoder 28 kB/s | 7.2 kB
00:00
RPM Fusion for Fedora 20 - Free - Updates 1.6 MB/s | 480
kB 00:00
RPM Fusion for Fedora 20 - Nonfree - Updates 599 kB/s | 172
kB 00:00
Adobe Systems Incorporated 12 kB/s |
1.8 kB 00:00
rpm.livna.org for 20 - x86_64 - Source 6.5 kB/s | 1.9
kB 00:00
google-chrome - 64-bit 49
kB/s | 3.7 kB 00:00
Then, after a few minutes of no apparent activity, the following happens:
Error: Failed to synchronize cache for repo 'updates' from
'https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/metalink?repo=updates-released-f20&arch...':
Cannot download repomd.xml: Cannot download repodata/repomd.xml: All
mirrors were tried
In that example, "dnf upgrade" fails.
If I run "yum upgrade", the result is as follows:
Loaded plugins: auto-update-debuginfo, langpacks
updates/20/x86_64/metalink | 14 kB 00:00:00
updates | 4.9 kB 00:00:00
http://mirror.symnds.com/distributions/fedora/updates/20/x86_64/repodata/...:
[Errno -1] repomd.xml does not match metalink for updates
Trying other mirror.
After that last message, a similar message is displayed for each mirror.
In that example, "yum update" succeeds.
BUT, it I comment out
"metalink=https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/metalink?repo=updates-released..."
in "/etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo" and un-comment
"baseurl=http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/updates/$relea...",
"dnf upgrade" and "yum update" proceed normally.
Is anyone else having this issue? I have checked this list for the past
few days for this issue, and I have not seen it mentioned.
To sum this up, if I use "baseurl" instead of "metalink" in
"/etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo" "dnf upgrade" succeeds.
If I use "metalink" instead of "baseurl" in
"/etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo" "dnf upgrade" fails.
Thank you,
Steven P. Ulrick

Re: [R] [R-sig-Fedora] Building R-3.2.0 from source.
by Ranjan Maitra
Rolf,
Just curious, but why do you use F17? The disasters that you anticipate may happen will be more and more likely the longer you wait to upgrade to a new F. (And, with no upgrades of any kind, aren't you on line for a greater disaster: for instance, you are not patched for the severe openssl vulnerability that was discovered and all over the news a year or two ago unless you installed it by hand yourself.)
If on the other hand, you do not want to upgrade as frequently as most of the rest of us here, you should either move to a long-term distribution (such as CentOS or ScientificLinux, which appears to have better support) or to a rolling-release distribution such as ArchLinux (whose installation is, IMO, its Achilles heel so you are better off with ManjaroLinux). With the first set, there also appears to be fewer packages available, but they may be enough for you.
Of course, it would be nicer if there was a rolling-release version of Fedora (precisely for people like you). Rawhide, often offered by some as a rolling-release equivalent, is too unstable to be of value to people who are upgrade-phobic. (Frankly, even I would not touch Rawhide.) Even Windoze is getting rid of upgrades.
Best wishes,
Ranjan

Q about firefox and youtube videos
by JD
FC21.
If this question is off-topic for this list,
please delete and ignore.
I have 2 profiles on Firefox.
They both have identical add-on's via firefox's drop-down menu
Tools -> Add-ons
on both profiles, add-ons have identical setup/configuration.
On one profile, I can play youtube vids, no problem.
On the other profile, youtube plays, but does not 'display'
the video. The video screen remains black.
I checked and rechecked the settings on both profiles
and they are identical.
So, what else should I look at to get to the bottom of this.
