can anaconda install into a btrfs subvolume?
by Neal Becker
actually, I have / and /home on 2 different btrfs subvolumes:
== /etc/fstab
UUID=7246327b-1905-4fe2-9b6b-b9376017264f / btrfs
subvol=root 1 1
UUID=2c04be93-34c1-4016-ba41-60fd9fd90616 /boot ext4
defaults 1 2
UUID=7246327b-1905-4fe2-9b6b-b9376017264f /home btrfs
subvol=home 1 2
UUID=e663c7fd-f321-45af-b643-30623ebfbc44 swap swap
defaults 0 0
UUID=e8f2dae0-e764-45f1-a7b3-575b45a5cb4f swap swap
defaults 0 0
===
If I want to clean-install f22, can I tell anaconda to install into
subvol=root of my existing btrfs volume (leaving /home subvol intact)??

failed systemctl services?
by Michael D. Setzer II
I was checking on systemctl status and found some that were listed as
failed?
One was caused since the vboxdrv modules for 3.19.5 kernel were not being
installed by yum for some reason. They didn't show up in the list, but was
able to locate and manually install it to correct that error.
The others I'm not sure of. Network-wait-online would report failed after boot
on some systems, but running a systemctl restart would fix the issue, ended
up changing the timeout from 30 to 90, and reboots seem to result in no
failures.
On a few machines got udisks2.service failed with Cannot allocate memory
message, but a restart on that also resulted in success.
Is there a process that automatically will try to restart failed systemctl
services, or would it be worth creating something to do so? Perhaps in
cron.hourly?
Might be these are harmless, but not sure.

F21: why Fedora still has not alternative init?
by Franta Hanzlík
I just tried upgrade my F19/i686 PC to F21/i686, but I'm frustrated:
- (bigger harm) Why hasn't Fedora alternative (upstart/openrc) init?
In F14- times all things worked for me flawlessly, was not problem
for me create init script for new (Fedora unsupported) services, was
not problem for me create init script for another network daemon
instance running on different port etc. From F15 (almost unworkable
distro) to now, I have lot of problems with systemd, including
inaccessible system - I not know this state since RH 4, when I first
started using Redhat (and then Fedora disribution).
When systemd presents itself as compatible with sysvinit, then IMO
having alternative init in Fedora should not be too big problem.
- (smaller harm) Why hasn't systemd option to run without journald?
I want to have, of course, all my logs made using rsyslogd (want text
logs, no some binary blobs; are also other reasons for this concept).
Why then in my system must run journald daemon, quite useless,
occupying 2.5+ MB of memory?
Has anyone some experience with alternative inits on Fedora?
Or is there some (Fedora based) distro with alternative init?
PS: up to F14, I was not afraid even to install a beta version of
Fedora. Since then I install a new distribution up to some time after
release, and I'm afraid that everything will not go. I understand
that it is not in good condition either for me or for the community.
I want to contribute to the success of the Fedora - at least, by
reporting bugs, etc.
I would like to again find Fedora, as it had been before.

Video Editing with Blender on Fedora 21 x86_64
by Chad Kellerman
Wondering if there are any Blender aficionados out there that might be able
to give me a hand with video editing.
I recorded my sons little league game on a GoPro Hero4 Silver. I copied
the MP4 files to my Fedora 21 computer to do some editing.
The videos are in the Quicktime container, MPEG-4 AAC
I installed blender but received an error during start up from the command
line. ( I had to install jemalloc to get Blender to start up. Not a
dependency, strange?)
I tried loading the video and received an error.... ( a generic error,
cannot load file.)
So I thought it might have been an ffmpeg or codec thing.. I then installed
ffmpeg, libmp4v, faad, and x264.
Still nothing, and Google isn't helping too much either...
If I start Blender from the command line this is what I get:
[sunckell@desktop ~] $ blender
Color management: using fallback mode for management
not an anim: /home/sunckell/tmp/Baseball-game-1.MP4
any ideas?
Thanks,
Chad
PS. The color management issue. Google says it's an OpenColorIO issue (
which I have the latest and greatest installed.)

The spamming servers

I got this from the freebsd mailing list to which I am subscribed.

Has anyone else seen this: Unnoticed for years, malware turned Linux and

More importantly, how do we disinfect? Reinstall the system?
But the infiltration was done to a freshly installed system.

/var/lib/mlocate/mlocate.db perms
by JD
As unprivileged user, I run locate <filename>
and get
$ locate file_3.mp3
locate: can not open `/var/lib/mlocate/mlocate.db': Permission denied
I always end up running sudo to change the perms so unpriv'ed
users can run locate.
What command should I run so the mlocate.db file is readable
by unpriv'ed users?

Tainted kernels
by Joe Zeff
Earlier, I'd asked about what was causing abrt to claim that my laptop's
kernel was tainted, even though I don't know of anything that would
cause this. Somebody asked me to check a certain location in /proc,
which turned out not to exist on the laptop. I'd like to check again,
and check it on my desktop as well because I know the desktop's kernel
is tainted by kmod-nvidia, and that would give me a good way to compare
a known-tainted kernel with my laptop's. Alas, I've lost the email with
the pointer in it. If anybody remembers what I'm supposed to check,
please let me know. Thanx!

what happened to the dkim-milter?
by Franta Hanzlík
I'm looking for Fedora 20 dkim-milter package (which was in F19 and
lower), but it seems as it isn't available - probably not even in
the F21). Know anyone?
Where can I see the fate of the packages that were formerly and now
are not it (e.g. LTSP and others) ?
