That might be a more sensible option I admit . . for me, I am always
getting stuff done in Bash scripts and then when it starts getting too
hard or clumsy, switching to Ruby - and I guess I am lazy and I keep
re-using what has already been done and is working . .

Thunderbird problem/question
by JD
I caused a problem for myself in TB (using a different email account).
By accident I had clicked on "Quick Filter", without noticing I had done
that.
Then I had proceeded to highlight all messages in Inbox in order to move
them to
another folder.
As soon as I realized I had done that, I did not proceed with the move.
But now, clicking on any message (be it in Inbox or in Sent) the message is
not displayed.
If I double click on a message, then it is displayed in an external
window of TB.
How can I revert it back to original expected behavior?

OK, that all makes sense but there is a further issue - I was trying to
keep it simple - this whole line is inside a Ruby "system" command ie:
system( "ssh .. " )
- so my working version is the same as your first option (without the
escaped '*'s) but with an extra '\' at each place. I can't use the
second option because I need to use double quotes so that I can use Ruby
variables inside the double quotes eg:
#{path}
Thanks for the explanation!

Phil.

Trying to open ports in firewalld
by Timothy Murphy
I'm trying to setup kdeconnect between my Android phone
and my Fedora-23/KDE laptop.
I see that I have to open ports 1714-1764, TCP and UDP.
I'm running firewalld on the laptop.
I give the command "firewall-config" and authenticate.
Clicking on zone "internal" I see that kde-connect is ticked.
And when I go to Ports I see that ports 1714-1764 are listed, TCP and UDP.
And all this remains set if I reboot.
But I am not able to establish a connection under kdeconnect.
Neither device sees the other.
Also "sudo nmap -sT -O localhost" on the laptop does not show
these ports to be open.
If I run "sudo systemctl stop firewalld"
then I am able to establish the connection.
It seems that these firewalld commands
to not open the specified ports, as I would expect.
Could some firewalld expert please elucidate.
Incidentall, I tried the alternative firewall service some time ago,
and that seemed to open the ports OK.

Can't get Japanese input working
by Niels Kobschaetzki
Hi,
I used Japanese input in Fedora23 before but after a reinstall because
of an intermittent distribution switch where I used fcitx I get punished
for cheating on Fedora. I just can't get ibus with KKC working outside
of urxvt. In no GTK- or QT-app it will run.
I tried in my .xinitrc, .xprofile, .profile and .bashrc (apparently the
last is one is necessary for LibreOffice oO)
export GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus
export QT_IM_MODULE=ibus
export XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus
and
export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim
export QT_IM_MODULE=xim
export XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus
I grepped the .-files in my $HOME for fcitx and it doesn't seem to be
present anymore.
I tried i3 and Gnome. My main test-application is Chrome but I also
tested it in Firefox, Libreoffice, Skype, Keepass and Kate as a
QT-application. Nothing works and I can't find any messages in any
log. It would be nice to have Japanese input outside of my terminal
available. Any ideas?

F23 i686; Old Gateway NetBook; b43; NetworkManager; network; hassles . .
by Philip Rhoades
People,
I have installed the b43 WiFi driver (from memory I think I had problems
with the b43-fwcutter RPM and had to install it manually) but in any
case it works generally with this old NetBook both in X and from the
console - _IF_ I log in from the netbook first . . if I reboot the
NetBook remotely and try and ssh to it when it comes back up, the
network isn't accessible. So I thought I would go through the exercise
of getting rid of NetworkManager and going back to a traditional network
setup and I followed the instructions here:
https://onemoretech.wordpress.com/2014/08/18/disabling-networkmanager-ste...
- which didn't actually work - the problem is, as soon as I do:
systemctl stop NetworkManager
the little LED WiFi light goes out on the keyboard and it seems there is
nothing I can do to get it on again - the manual slider switch does not
work (I just get kbd unrecognised key errors). lsmod reports that all
the modules are still loaded as for NetworkManager. As soon as I
restart NetworkManager, the WiFi light comes back on - so the question
is: what is NM doing to enable the WiFi switch? I think if I could find
that out, I could get the traditional networking to function . .
From the attached /var/log/messages, you can see the result of:
systemctl stop NetworkManager
before the:
"================================================================"
and the result of:
systemctl start NetworkManager
after. You can see the wlan0 deauthenticating and "link is not ready"
messages.
Not sure where to go from here - suggestions?
Thanks,
Phil.

also removed the mozilla sig line.
found this ability when i selected an email to read. when read page opened,
below the email content is a box that reads;
Reply, Reply to all, or Forward
clicking on "Reply" opened a reply box where there are 3 dot in a gray
back gound in lower left, hovering over it produced a pop-up with message
"Show trimmed content". clicking it produced a 'trimmed' printout of
original message. gmail's 'trimmed' is what rest of world calls 'quoted'.
therefore, all you gmail users no longer have an excuse that gmail will
not create an email with interspersed response and bottom response.
also, in looking thru settings, gmail is lacking in that there is no
selection for automatic trimmed replies. for shame.
therefore i suggest that there be an addition to the page on how to respond
be made along with a link at bottom of fedora's email that a 'newbie' gmail
user can be directed to.
such would go far in the bickering about gmail, top and bottom posting.

OT: renice jobs running for more than 5 minutes
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I am running a fully updated F23 box but this question does not have much to do with Fedora itself, hence the designator and the disclaimer.
I am wanting to run a script which will look at all the jobs that are running and renice all of them which have been on for more than five minutes. (Then I can run the script as a cron job as root and be done with automating the process.)
Are there any suggestions as to how to go about this task efficiently? Actually, before I reinvent the wheel, are there any standard options that already exist and which would be more suitable for me than just to do everything from scratch.
Best wishes,
Ranjan
