RE: Seeking advice on router.
by J.Witvliet@mindef.nl
Hi,
It’s tricky to name a particular brand and type. What might be available for me, might be unobtainable for you, or vice-versa
A frequently heard advice, is to avoid heavily used channels, but I notice that more and more people switching over to hidden SSID, implying that easy tools on hand-helds and tablets are useless.
As a RF-engineer, I would suggest to use a type with detachable antenna’s, instead of those where the antenna is in the enclosure.
That gives you the possibility to replace one (or more) of them with either an (directional) antenna outside, or use a leaky coax through the building.

As mentioned, range can be affected by many aspects. 25 ft for even the cheapest router is way short; I would be inclined to look for interference or simply placement. Many a routers get put next to or behind things which nerf the range... oddest placement for me was putting a router near the main ventilation trunk for AC in the attic; acted as a conduit for the signal. Also, look at the wireless devices in your house. Some may share the bandwidth of your router and be acting as jammers. My 2 bits.

Yes, this is known and has been discussed on this list multiple times over the years.
You can prevent this from happening on your end simply by adding a filter on gmail which a
match for "to: users(a)lists.fedoraproject.org<mailto:users@lists.fedoraproject.org>" and an action of "Never send to Spam" (not
sure that is the exact phrase).

IFCONFIG
by Angelo Moreschini
Hi,
in order to use the ssh services, I looked for the internet address of my
computer, and the ifconfig command gave the following output that I
have difficulty
'to interpret :
-----------
[angelo_dev@localhost ~]$ sudo ifconfig

The output of ifconfig command shows two cards (enp4s0, wlp3s0) while on
the computer, it is installed only one

What is 'the explanation of this fact?
Also I would like to be sure to exactly get the IP address of computer ..
so, please, I would ask what is the IP address to use for my purpose (

Thank you

How to get NetworkManager to accept my spoofed mac address without
using the gui?
by William Oliver
So, I'm sitting in a hotel in North Carolina that has two levels of wireless -- free and paid. I tried the free, and it's too slow. So, I decided to pay.
But I can't. The system has mapped my mac address to the free sign up, and there's nothing I can do to get it to change.
No problem, I tell myself. Back in the day, I used to spoof my mac address all the time. I'll just change my mac address, reconnect, and hook up using that.
Now, back when I used to do that a lot, I was running Fedora 19, and it was easy:
It was just...
%service NetworkManager stop
%macchanger -a wlo1
%service NetworkManager start
... and voila!
However, this time in Fedora 24, that doesn't work.
Here's what happens:
% ifconfig
eno1: flags=4099<UP,BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
ether dc:4a:3e:e3:5f:da txqueuelen 1000 (Ethernet)
RX packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B)

TX packets 1642049 bytes 940283651 (896.7 MiB)
TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0
Note the "ether e0:94:67:84:ae:36" for wlo1.
Now...
%service NetworkManager stop
Redirecting to /bin/systemctl stop NetworkManager.service
%macchanger -a wlo1
Current MAC: e0:94:67:84:ae:36 (Intel Corporate)
Permanent MAC: e0:94:67:84:ae:36 (Intel Corporate)
[ERROR] Could not change MAC: interface up or insufficient permissions:

Hmmm... Well, it worked a couple of years ago. Maybe I have to turn the
interface off completely...
%ifconfig wlo1 down
%macchanger -a wlo1
Current MAC: e0:94:67:84:ae:36 (Intel Corporate)
Permanent MAC: e0:94:67:84:ae:36 (Intel Corporate)
New MAC: 00:1e:9d:ee:9a:79 (Recall Technologies, Inc.)
OK, looks good.
Let's turn it on.
%ifconfig wlo1 up

Yayy! Looks goot.
So, let's turn Network Manager back on...
%service NetworkManager start
Redirecting to /bin/systemctl start NetworkManager.service
%ifconfig
eno1: flags=4099<UP,BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500

Son of a gun. NetworkManger changed it back, it seems. What happens if
I turn it off...
%service NetworkManager stop
Redirecting to /bin/systemctl stop NetworkManager.service
%ifconfig
ifconfig
eno1: flags=4099<UP,BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500

TX packets 1642544 bytes 940357501 (896.7 MiB)
TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0
What??? Now the change is reinstated???
So, NetworkManager is ignoring the changes I make. I thought that maybe I could use nmcli to do this. But this is what I get:
%nmcli connection modify wlo1 802-11-wireless.cloned-mac-address 55:44:33:22:11:00
Error: Unknown connection 'wlo1'.
Damn. An interface isn't a connection, apparently... But it's not connected to anything.
OK, I'll connect and see what happens:
`
%nmcli connection modify attwifi 802-11-wireless.cloned-mac-address 55:44:33:22:11:00
Well, that didn't give me an error, but it also didn't actually change the mac address when I did an ifconfig.
So, I know I could disconnect and type in a mac address using the gui for network manager, but I'd like to be able to script this. What am I doing wrong? How can I get NetworkManager to scarf up a mac address I generate either by editing a config file or by using nmcli?
Thanks

Supported 2x DVB-S2 hardware
by Philip Heron
Hey all,
Can anyone recommend a dual DVB-S2 PCIe or USB receiver that works out
of the box on Fedora?
I have a TBS6982 PCIe card at the moment. There is a driver for this but
it doesn't look like it's ever going to get merged.

firefox huge json files block syncing
by Maurizio Marini
Hello
I am sure I am not alone w/ this issue, I have a very huge logins.json file,
it's not absolutely huge, it's 1,3 MBytes, but it's huge enough to hang firefox
when I try to purge old used (last used sort column) password.
I could survive with it, of course, but the side effect is that my station,
master station, is not able to sync w/ other stations anymore.
This store (logins.json) seems to be huge enough to hang syncing too.
Hopefully someone of you was faced with similar issues and can suggest me a
solution
Best regards

Recommended cases and HDDs for home server
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
I'm looking for any recommendations for both HDDs and cases for a simple
home server setup.
I have a good working mobo.
I have used a few Antec Sonata cases; are there better similar cases to
consider?
As for HDDs, any recommendations on manufacturers, branding, sizes (don't
go above ...), etc?
Much thanks.

alpine
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
On a fresh installation fc24, alpine complains with:
[Incomplete maildomain "myserveur"]
I found:
http://phr3ak.z80.hu/2013/08/08/error-incomplete-maildomain-pine-alpine/
recommending to add myserveur in the /etc/hosts file.
I did so and restarted sendmail, but I still get the same error.
I am surprise because, on a machine updated to fc24, I do not have
this error with or without altering the file /etc/hosts.
Where is maildomain setup?
Thank.

Decent picture viewer
by Robert Moskowitz
For the longest time I used gthumb for picture viewer. I even installed
a gnome app on my Xfce desktop with Fedora21, but I did not like what
they did to gthumb in Fedora22. I almost shudder to think what it looks
like in F24 (though I could try the liveCD and see...).
Anyway, Ristretto in Xfce is really not adequate, so I am asking really
nicely, please for recommendations.
:)
What picture viewer do you use on F24?
thanks
